DONALD TILLER

McBEE — Funeral services for Donald Herbert Tiller, 65, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Union United Methodist Church with the Revs. R. J. Roberts and Paul Mitchell officiating with burial in McBee cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the McBee Rescue Squad, PO Box 355, McBee, SC 29101 or Union United Methodist Church Building Fund, Box 398, McBee, SC 29101.

Mr. Tiller died Saturday, May 31, 2003. Born in Kershaw County, he was a son of Pearl Godwin Tiller and the late Daniel Herbert. He was a member of Union United Methodist Church and McBee Masonic Lodge No. 313. He owned the music publishing company, Silver Key Music, and was a member of the Country Music Association. He received the lifetime achievement award of the S.C. Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame.

Surviving are his wife, Judy Kirkley Tiller of McBee; sons and daughters–in–law, Randy and Rhonda Tiller, Terry and Gina Tiller, Chris and Stephanie Tiller, all of McBee, Brad and Celeste Tiller of Rock Hill; mother of McBee; sister, Mary Lynn Gainey of Bethune; brother, Wayne Tiller of McBee; grandchildren, Josh Tiller, Lindsay Gainey, Christian Tiller, Chloe Tiller and Weston Tiller.

RAY WALTERS

Mr. Ray L. Waters died on Sunday, June, 1, in a Florence hospital after an extended illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. The family will receive friends at the residence.

RUTH MOORE

Funeral services for Ruth DeWitt Moore, 87, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 1, 2003, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Bob Cline officiating. Burial followed in Westview Memorial Park cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 104 E. Home Ave., Hartsville SC 29550 or the American Cancer Society, 123 Westover Dr., Hartsville SC 29550

Mrs. Moore, widow of George Moore, died Thursday, May 29, 2003. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Hallie and Clara Privette DeWitt. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Charles Richard and Loretta Moore of Hartsville; daughters and sons–in–law, Rochelle M. and Bill Miller of Hartsville, Jewel M. and Rusty McClam of Chapin; sister–in–law, Frances DeWitt of Lydia; brother, Barney DeWitt of Smyrna, Ga.; daughters–in–law, Pat Moore and Charli Moore, both of Florence; grandchildren, Leigh M. David, Leslie Anne Miller, Tammy Renee Moore, Kay M. Howle, Kathy M. Hendricks, Suzie M. Blaylock, John H. Moore, Jesse R. McClam, Katherine A. McClam, Tina Fountain Lloyd, Ronald Furman Fountain, William Marty Osborne, Shelley Osborne Drose; and 12 great–grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sons Kenneth Moore, Franklin Moore; brothers, W. Hallie DeWitt, Lavern DeWitt; sister, Dorothy DeWitt.

COL. BYRON GREENE

Funeral services for Col. (Ret.) Byron D. Greene, 80, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 5, 2003, at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. The Very Rev. Ted Duvall will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends tonight, June 4, 2003 from 5–7 pm at the funeral home.

Col. Greene, widower of Betty Byerly Greene, died Monday, June 2. Born in Severna Park, MD., he was the son of the late Byron D. and Alice White Greene Sr. He was a 1946 graduate of the U. S. Military Academy at West Point. He was a member of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. Col. Greene was a patriot and warrior whose entire life was guided by his West Point Motto: DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY. He served his country for 27 years as an Army infantry officer and was decorated for heroism and valor in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Throughout, he was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and memorable role model for those who knew him. He is not gone for as they say, Old soldiers never die, they just fade away!

Surviving are his sons and daughters–in–law, Col. Byron D. Ron and Nina Greene III of Columbia, Drs. William Michael and Bronwen Greene of Greenville; daughter and son–in–law, Margaret Byerly Pegi and Tommy Vaughn of Forsyth, Ga.; sisters, Francis Chinn of Murrells Inlet, and Anne Hinson of Wilmington, N.C.; five grandchildren.

MADGE D. DANA

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Madge Dawkins Dana, 90, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 5, 2003, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Darlington with burial will follow in Grove Hill cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 – 8 tonight, June 4, at Belk Funeral Home in Darlington.

Mrs. Dana died Monday, June 2, in a Florence retirement home. She was born in Pageland, a daughter of the late Mastin Dawkins and Lillie New Dawkins. She was a Registered Nurse and a graduate of Pageland High School.

Her husband, Richard Dana, preceded her in death in 1964.

Surviving are her daughter, Bonnie Clare Dana of Florence; a son, J. Dwight Dana of Darlington; and triplet grandsons, Brenton, Payson and Radisson Dana, all of Darlington.

Memorials may be made to the Ken Williams Endowment Fund or Camp Love at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, PO Box 804, Darlington, SC 29540–0804.

LULA V. NEWSMITH

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Lula Velena Lewis Nesmith, 69, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 31, 2003, in the Mechanicsville Baptist Church, conducted by Pastor Frankie Tanner with burial following in the church cemetery, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.

Mrs. Nesmith died Tuesday, May 27. She was born in Scotland County, N.C., a daughter of the late Clyde and Louise Norton Lewis. She was a member of the Mechanicsville Baptist Church and enjoyed traveling. Mrs. Nesmith loved her family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, Albert L. Nesmith Sr. of Darlington; four sons, Billy Ray (Terry) Nesmith and their two sons, Robbie and Tony of Cleveland, Tenn., Albert L. Nesmith Jr. of Darlington, James W. Nesmith Sr. and his son, James of Darlington and Remer (Lynn) C. Nesmith and their son, Michael of Decatur, Tenn.; one daughter, Diane (George) Adair and their two sons, Timmy and Noel of Himmer, Ga.; one brother, Bill Lewis of Darlington; four sisters, Betty (J.O.) Dryden of Warner Robbins, Ga., Sherry Hales of Darlington, Faye (Greg) Sheppard of Laurinburg, N.C., and Glenda (Dickie) Hall of Gibson, N.C.; 11 grandchildren and 11 great–grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight, Friday, at the funeral home from 7–9 p.m.

RALEIGH R. BURNO

Raleigh Roland Burno, 78, died Wednesday, May 28, 2003, in the V.A. Hospital in Columbia after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

DOROTHY M. YOUNG

Funeral services for Dorothy M. Dot Young were held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. E. J. Squire, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home.

Mrs.Young died Friday, May 23, in a local hospital after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Burton and Nettie Frierson Brown. She was educated in the public schools, graduating in the class of 1955 from Butler High School. She lived and worked in Bridgeport, Conn. for 14 years before returning to Hartsville. She was a lifetime member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church and was a member of the Gospel Choir. She was also a member of Hamilton Tent No. 171 and served as a foster parent for more than 30 years to many deserving children.

Survivors include a daughter, Doris (Edward) Lee of Darlington; five sons, Milton Brockenberry, Robert (Tonya) Brockenberry, Thomas Fields, Wilson Fields and Johnson Fields, all of Hartsville; 11 grandchildren, three great–grandchildren; six sisters, Ethel (George) Gattison of Hartsville, Alice (Ali) Bell, Bertha (Jeffrey) Hill and Willie Mae Brown, all of Bridgeport, Conn., Lillie Hinson of Diehirt, Mich., and Roberta Jones of Stratford, Conn.; five brothers, Loris (Azalee) Brown of Hartsville, Willie (Addie) Brown and James (Harriet) Brown, both of Darlington, Henry Brown of Syracuse, N.Y., and Julius (Ethel) Brown of Dallas, Texas; her sister–in–law, Corinthian Brown of Darlington; four aunts and one uncle.

RILEY ROWE

Funeral services for E. Riley Rowe, 80, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 1, 2003, at Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Surrett officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Saturday, May 31, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Rowe died Wednesday, May 28. Born in Trenton, N.C., he was a son of the late Judge Joseph Vance and Gladys Loftin Rowe. He grew up in Aberdeen, N.C. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. He received his bachelor of science degree at North Carolina State University and his master's of business administration at the University of South Carolina. Early in his career he was employed with the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation in China. He was employed with Sonoco for 30 years and was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He later served as chairman of the Board of Polyrol, Inc., and held numerous patents of his inventions. He was also a member of Mensa and the Civitans, was a former member of the Hartsville Jaycees and was named Jaycee of the Year in 1957. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was the commander of the VFW.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Hine Rowe of Hartsville; two sons and daughters–in–law, David L. (Virginia) Rowe of Raleigh, N.C., Steven E. (Sharon) Rowe of Hartsville; two daughters and sons–in–law, Elizabeth Lisa (Gary) Ray of Corona, Calif., and Judith (Tim) Britt of Spartanburg; sisters, Catherine Corey of Santa Clarita, Calif., Eleanor Swift of Aberdeen, N.C.., Gladys Caudle of Spartanburg; and six grandchildren.

CORA LEE ROBINSON

Funeral services for Cora Lee Robinson, 93, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 24, 2003, at New Hope United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Robinson died Tuesday, May 20, in Morrell Memorial Nursing Home. She was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Dave and Pearlie Gainey Baldwin. She received her education in Chesterfield County public schools. Mrs. Robinsonwas a member of New Hope United Methodist Church, Missionary Communion, stewardess, Senior Choir and the Eastern Star No. 205.

Surviving are a daughter, Mary Lee Robinson of Darlington; a son, Ernest James Robinson Sr., of Philadelphia, Pa.; a daughter–in–law, Nannie Lee Robinson of Hartsville; 28 grandchildren, 77 great–grandchildren and 28 great–great–grandchildren.

WOODROE BLACK

McBEE — Funeral services for Woodroe Woody Black, 61, will be held at 3 p.m. today, May 30, 2003, in Nicey Grove Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral.

Mr. Black died Saturday, May 24, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. He was born in Kershaw County, a son of Collee Timmons and the late Katherine Black. He received his education in the public schools of Chesterfield County and attended Nicey Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving other than his father of Charlotte, N.C., are two daughters, Nettie Black of Bishopville and Carol Muldrow of McBee; two sons, Chris Black of Bishopville and Rodney Black of Columbia; six brothers, Joe (Dorothy) Black of McBee, Garfield (Daisy) Black of Hartsville, James (Lucy) Black of Kingston, N.C., Bennie (Dot) Black Jr. of Irvington, N.J., George Bee (Lee) Black of Charleston and Aaron (Doris Miller) Black of East Orange, N.J.; five grandchildren, a companion, Frances Wright of McBee; and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

JAMES H. CHARLTON

Funeral services for James Henry Charlton were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2003, at Clyde Church of God with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mr. Charlton was born in North Carolina, the son of Ruth Deas Charlton and the late Henry Charlton.

Surviving are his wife, Mildred Hutson Charlton; three daughters, Tammy Shaw, Tina McLaughlin and Jamie Charlton; a sister, two brothers and five grandchildren.

DOROTHY YOUNG

Mrs. Dorothy Young died Friday, May 23, 2003, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Hartsville.

WILLIAM ANDERSON

DARLINGTON — William Dearel Anderson Sr., 75, died Sunday, May 25, in a Florence hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, May 28, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home officiated by the Revs. Lloyd Roberts and Jeff Price. Interment will follow in Darlington Memory Gardens.

Mr. Anderson was born in Darlington County the son of the late Wiley W. and Alpha O'Neal Anderson. He was a lifelong resident of Darling–ton County and served his country with the United States Navy. He was a long–distance truck driver and had retired from Moss Trucking Company of Charlotte and Bristow Transport Company of Darlington. Mr. Anderson was a Mason and member and former deacon of Freedom Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Edna Godbold Anderson; two sons, William D. Anderson Jr. of Garden City and Timothy Tim Anderson of Darling–ton; one daughter, Melba Kim Massey of Florence; eight grandchildren and five great–grandchildren; also, two sisters, Shelvie Jean (Winfred) Davis of Darlington and Daisy Irene Byrd of Hartsville.

Mr. Anderson was preceded in death by a son, Richard Ricky Dale Anderson, and a brother, Aaron Anderson.

Memorials are suggested to Freedom Baptist Church, Driveway Fund, 1416 Lamar Highway, Darlington, SC 29532.

DAVID AARON

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for David Aaron were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Lee Street Church of God with minister Juanita Doe, interim pastor and the Rev. Charles Aaron officiating. Burial was in Faith Memorial Gardens directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.

Mr. Aaron died Monday, May 19, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late John and Julia Blathers Aaron. He attended the Lamar area schools. After moving to New York, he served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged. He was a member of The Church of God of New York. He was employed with Mason Tender's District Council Local 79 Construction Co. in New York City.

After relocating back to Darlington, he was employed with S.C. Department of Transportation until he retired. He became a member of The Lee Street Church of God where he served faithfully with the Brotherhood and Adult Sunday School Class.

He was preceded in death by a son, Nathaniel Aaron, seven sisters and four brothers.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Helen Aaron of the home; a sister–in–law, Annie (John) Gooden of New York; godchildren, Monroe and Joanne Davis of Darlington; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
