Janie L. Holmes of 106 Grove St., died Wednesday, May 14, 2003 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness. She was the daughter of the late James A. Holmes Sr. and Mary L. Jones. She was a member of the Monarch Baptist Church where she served as a member of the Senior Choir. After many wonderful years of service, she retired from the Ellen Sagar Nursing Home where she enjoyed both the patients and her co-workers.
Surviving are three daughters, Maxine J. Holmes, Mary E. (Walker) Glenn, and Sharon F. (Jerome) Beasley; three sons, James S. (Sherry) Holmes, Kenneth W. Holmes and Bryon S. (Veronica) Holmes all of Union; two grandchildren who were reared in the home, LaToya Glenn and Jerome Beasley III; three brothers, James Holmes of Fort Wadding, Mass., Richard B. Jones of Atlanta, Ga., and Jerry (Judy) Jones of Union; a sister, Betty (Herbert) Klubec of Florida; 17 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Monarch Baptist Church. Burial will be in Antioch Society Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 106 Grove St. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Haskell Ivey
Haskell Grayson Ivey, 69, husband of Mary Harris Ivey, of 1607 Jonesville Highway, died at his home Friday, May 16, 2003, at 8:45 a.m. Mr. Ivey was born in Jonesville on April 22, 1934, a son of the late Autry Ivey Sr. and Rose Blackwell Ivey. He was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church where he served was a former deacon and Sunday School superintendent. Mr. Ivey was a graduate of Jonesville High School and served in the U. S. Navy and Navy Reserves from 1952 until 1960, and was retired from Community Cash Stores after 40 years of service.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Mrs. Steve (Debbie) Trammel of Union, Ms. Cindy Ivey of the home and Ms. Kia McNeace of Union; his mother-in-law, Alice F. Harris of Union; three grandchildren, Brooke Trammel, Dylan and Marissa McNeace, all of Union; a sister, Mrs. Fred (Vegia) Gregory of Jonesville and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Ivey was predeceased by two brothers, Autry Ivey Jr. of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Garris Ivey of Union. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Robert Patterson, the Rev. Dr. Ralph Boling Jr. and the Rev. Randy Smith. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military rites.
Active pallbearers will be Brad Blackwell, Monroe Smith, Dean Tollison, Dan Sherbert, Wylie Scruggs, Michael Brown, Wayne Palmer and Clay Palmer. The following are asked to assemble at Fairforest Baptist Church Sunday at 3:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort:

Scott Cobb, members of the Men's No. 1, 2, and 3 Sunday School classes of Fairforest Baptist Church; after school grandparents of Monarch School and Hospice Care of S.C. employees.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 until 8:30 and will be placed in church at 3 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service. Lewis Robert Roark
Lewis Robert Roark, 63, husband of Anna Marie Bailey Roark, of 117 Lake Dr., Union, died Wednesday, May 14, 2003 ,at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness. Mr. Roark was born in Union on April 5, 1940, a son of the late Leonard and Lucille Vinson Roark. He was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant and was formerly employed with Regal Mills in Woodruff. Mr. Roark was a member of the Oakland Road Missionary Baptist Church and a former mason and shriner.
Surviving in addition to his wife are one daughter and her husband Sheila and Paul Morris of Forest City, N.C.; two sons and their wives, Mason and Angie Roark of Union and Timothy and Jennifer Roark of Union; three brothers, Broadus Roark, William Roark and Leonard (Junior) Roark, all of Union; three sisters, Jackie Crouch of Florida, Connie Hyatt of Union and Evelyn Roberts of Michigan; five grandchildren, Caleb Roark, Seth Roark, Ariel Roark, Chancellor Roark and Alexis Roark.
Mr. Roark was predeceased by a brother Gene Roark. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by Pastor Joe Ballard. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Layton Roark, Harold Bright, Billy Vinson, John Moore, Walter Holcombe and Bobby Holcombe.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Friday from 7-9 p.m. The family is at the home of his son, Mason Roark, 3211 Whitmire Highway, Union. Memorials may be made to the Oakland Road Missionary Baptist Church, P.O. Box 130, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
June T. Scriven
June T., Scriven, 53, wife of Phillip Scriven of 106 Partridge Road, died Thursday, May 15, 2003, at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville. She was a former employee of The Union Daily Times and Wallace Thomson Hospital.
Surviving in addition to her husband are her children, Andrea (Mark) Mueller of Beloit, Wis.; Jesse (Laura) Tarrant of Rockton, Ill.; Stephanie and Adams Scriven of Roscoe, Ill.; three grandchildren, Madelyn Mueller of Beloit, Wis.; Andree Tarrant of Rockton, Ill. and Paige Larson of Roscoe, Ill.; her mother, Velma Parr of Rockton, Ill.; a sister, Susie Haas of Shirland, Ill. ,and her grandmother, June Gonier of Beloit, Wis.. Special friends are Lewis, Linda and Scott Lancaster of Buffalo and Breea Adams of Jonesville.
Mrs. Scriven was predeceased by her father, Wylie Parr of Rockton, Illinois and her brother, Rick of Rockton, Illinois. Memorial services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at West Springs Baptist Church. Funeral services and burial will be in Illinois on Thursday, May 22. Rosman, Uehling, Kinzer Funeral Home in Beloit, Wis., has charge of arrangements.
J. Virgil Morris
James Virgil Morris, 82, husband of Doris Knox Morris of 111 Hillcrest Drive, died at his residence Monday, May 17, 2004, at 3:50 p.m. after an extended illness. Mr. Morris was born in Union on July 27, 1921, a son of the late James Thomas Morris and Thaddie Horne Morris. He was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon, was founder and president of the Senior Adult Group of the church, and was a member of the Earl Fowler Sunday School Class. He was a graduate of Union High School where he played football and baseball.
Following high school, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Morris retired from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) where he worked for 37 years and achieved the rank of lieutenant. He was active in the Law Enforcement Community Affairs, servicing as a member of the S.C. Law Enforcement Association, a member of the American Legion Post 22 where he served as past Post Commander and Area Commander. He was a former president and member of the Union Lions Club, a member of the John A. Fant Masonic Lodge and the Hejaz Shrine Temple.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a son and his friend, Jimmy Morris and Lori Whiteside of Myrtle Beach; a son-in-law, John Middlebrook of Lexington; a granddaughter and her husband, Leslie M. and Terry Shealy of Lexington; three grandsons, David Middlebrook and his finance, Robin Phillips, of Lexington, Andy Morris and his friend, Heather Conners, of Myrtle Beach and Mathew Morris of Myrtle Beach; a great-granddaughter, Cheyanne Lawson of Union; three sisters, Ruth McGowan of Kingston, N.Y. Annie Mae Bradley of Rock Hill and Lib and her husband, Al Smith of Union; a brother, Billy and his wife Sylvia Morris of Clarksville, Ga.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Morris was predeceased by a daughter, Karen M. Middlebrook; two brothers, Clarence W. Morris and Carl Morris and a sister, Mary Morris. The family is at the home, 111 Hillcrest Drive, Union and will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 6 until 8 p.m. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Virginia M. Gossett
Virginia Mae Murph Gossett, 89, wife of Herbert Gossett of 447 New Hope Church Road, Jonesville, died Sunday morning, May 18, 2003, at her residence after an extended illness. Mrs. Gossett was born in Spartanburg County on Feb. 7, 1914, a daughter of the late William Loyd Murph and Ellie Spake Murph.
She was a faithful member of the New Hope United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Ladies Sunday School Class, the United Methodist Women's Circle and had served on the new Hope United Methodist Church Administrative Board. A Christian lady, Mrs. Gossett has left a legacy of faithfulness to Christ, to her church, her husband of 70 years, her children and grandchildren.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters and sons-in-law, Dora and Charles Blackwell of Jonesville and Bobbie Jean and Harold D. Lawson of Union; a son and daughter-in-law, Albert and Meredith Gossett of Greenville; two sisters, Dora (Ada) Murph Fleming of Spartanburg and Mary Murph Watson of Boiling Springs; five grandchildren, Beth Hood of Jonesville, Chris Gossett of Johnston, Mark Blackwell of Jonesville, Audra Hammond of Greenville and Tiffany Matthews of Cumming, Ga.; seven great-grandchildren, Douglas Matthews of Cumming, Ga., Britt Gossett and Reid Gossett of Johnston, Matthew Hood, Charles Bryson Hood, Hunter Blackwell and Hagan Blackwell, all of Jonesville.
Mrs. Gossett was predeceased by two sisters and three brothers, Dorothy Murph, Ella Threadgill, Robert L. Murph, Paul Murph and William Murph. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. in New Hope United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Scott Gilmer, the Rev. Ralph Brown and Chaplain Gary A. Pindroh. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Harold Murph, Dennis Threadgill, Mark Blackwell, Chris Gossett, Scot Hood and Joe Matthews. The following are asked to assemble at the church Tuesday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Mrs. Gossett's nephews, members of the Ladies Sunday School Class, members of the United Methodist Women's Circle, Randy and Linda Medford, Warren Little, Harry Ray Taylor, Harold Youngblood, William (Bill) Black, employees of Interim Hospice, Buddy Peay, Daniel Groves, James Haile, Claude Bobo, B. F. Ledford, Harold and Carol Cookson, the Rev. Jerry Lawson, Annie Bell Vinson, Charles Warner, May Pelham the Rev. Jesse Ham, Grady Blackwell, Tommy Benfield, Pearl Crocker, Gladys (Doodle) Sims, Marlene Eldridge, Mike Floyd and Dr. James Brown.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 until 8:30 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 447 New hope Church Road.

Ronnie M. Haney
Ronnie Mack Haney, 52, of 306 Osborne St., husband of Deborah (Debbie) Eubanks Haney, died Sunday, May 18, 2003 at 2:42 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Mr. Haney was born in Union on June 6, 1950, a son of Mrs. Sallie Bledsoe Haney of Union and the late Herman Haney. He was a Baptist.
Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are a son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Tonya Haney of Gray Court; three sisters, Margaret Swanson and Doris Dover, both of Union and Diane Panther of Cross Anchor; two brothers, Larry Haney and Dean Haney, both of Union. Mr. Haney was predeceased by a sister and brother, Nell H. Billings and Kenneth Haney.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Johnny Burgess. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7 until 9. The family is at the home, 306 Osborne St. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Woodrow W. Harris
Woodrow Wilson Harris, 84, husband of Agnes Ruth Willard Harris of 1104 Kelly Road, died Saturday, May 17, 2003, at 3:43 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after several years of declining health. Mr. Harris was born in Union County on Sept. 14, 1918, a son of the late Edward Washington Harris and Lillie Ann Vaughn Harris.
He was a member of Westside Baptist Church and the Men's Sunday School Class. Mr. Harris was a member of Masonic Lodge #75; a member of the Union County Soil Conservation Service and a member of the Department of Social Services Board.
He was also a member of the S.C. Law Enforcement Officers Association and served as a member of the Union County Council for the Pinckney Township. Mr. Harris was retired from the S.C. Probation, Pardon and Parole Board where he was agent in charge in Union from 1954 until 1980 and received a certificate of appreciation for his service.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a sister, Clara Belle Harris of Union; a brother, Edward O. Harris of Union; and two nephews, Eddie Harris of Union and Ronnie Boozer of Charlotte. Mr. Harris was predeceased by a sister and two brothers, Frances H. Boozer, Roger Harris and James L. Harris. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Bobby Crocker.
Active pallbearers will be Eddie Harris, Ronnie Boozer, James Harris Jr., Roger Harris, Randolph Whitehead and Marky Pettit. The family is at the home, 1104 Kelly Road, and will receive friends immediately following the graveside service. Memorial may be made to Westside Baptist Church, 105 Lawson Avenue, Union, S.C. 29379 or to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 1622 Kelly Road, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
