HARLEYVILLE — Funeral services for Harold Harry Jones, 65, were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2003, in Harold L. and Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Lawson Grove Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Jones died Tuesday, May 13, in Harleyville. He was born in Darlington County, the son of Eloise Jones and the late Thomas Jones. He attended the Darlington County public schools. He moved to North Carolina and later to New York City with his family. He was baptized and attended Mount Morriah Baptist Church. Mr. Jones was a very hard working man and was highly skilled in carpentry, painting, plumbing, machinery and auto mechanics. He worked for many years as a superintendent for several apartment buildings where he suffered and burn injury and became disabled for several years. He also enjoyed helping his friends and family fix cars, build and fix things in their homes as well as fishing.
He leaves to cherish his memory his mother of Hartsville; five children, Harold E. Jones, Angela Jones, Jennifer Jones Mainor, Karen (Toren) Jones–Hailey, all of North Carolina, and Dejwaunna Jones of Harleyville; four grandchildren, Felicia Moreno, Andre Moreno, Latisha Hulse, Clyde Mainor, Olivia Mainor and Victoria Hailey, all of North Carolina; three great–grandchildren; five sisters, Ella Mae (Robert) Whitley of Williamston, N.C., Mary Jones of Manhattan, N.Y., Ruby (Marvin) Tillman of Camden, Betty Jene (Lloyd) Cadle of Farrockaway, N.Y., Fannie Lyons of Atlanta, Ga.; three brothers, Lorane (Hattie) Jones of Jamaica, N.Y., Roosevelt Jones and Lawrence (Catherine) Jones, both of Hartsville; one aunt, Carrie Lee Jacobs of Oates Community; one uncle, Harry Wilds Jr. of Oates; ex–wives, Betty Jones of New York City and Geraldine Pringle Jones of Harleyville; a dear friend, Martha White and a host of loving nieces, nephews, family and friends.
JAMES CHAPPEL
LANCASTER — Funeral services for James Chappell, 67, formerly of Lancaster, were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20, 2003, from the Cauthen Funeral Home Chapel in Lancaster, with the Rev. James Chappell officiating. Burial was in the Pleasant Plain Baptist Church cemetery.
Mr. Chappell passed away on Saturday, May 17, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. He was born on Feb. 16, 1936, a son of the late Henry Carson and Mary Leona Collins Chappell. Mr. Chappell was the widower of Mrs. Libbie Stewart Chappell and was retired from Loxe Lumber Company and was also employed by Gainey Tool and Machine Company in Hartsville.
Mr. Chappell is survived by his companion, Ms. Nona Thompson of Hartsville; a son, Michael Gainey; a daughter, Mrs. Elaine (Kenny) Mackey of Heath Springs; four brothers, Fred Chappell, John Chappell, Jimmy Chappell and William Chappell, all of Lancaster; three sisters, Mrs. Nellie Stevens of Lancaster, Mrs. Sadie Baker of Fort Lawn, and Mrs. Mamie Reeves of Orlando, Fla.
CLEO D. HAYES
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Cleo Davis Hayes, 92, were held on Saturday, May 17, 2003, at Indian Branch United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Pine Grove United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hayes died Thursday, May 15. She was born in Darlington County, the daughter of the late Wheeler and Charlotte Flowers Davis. She was a member of Indian Branch United Methodist Church and the Lottie McSwain Sunday School Class. Mrs. Hayes was a graduate of St. John's High School and Winthrop College. Prior to working at Flowers Furniture in Darlington, she and her husband operated Haye's Grocery at Wilson's Crossroads for many years.
Mrs. Hayes was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Hayes.
Survivors include three daughters, Frances Jones and Loris (Winfred) Flowers, both of Darlington, Betty (Ken) Thrasher of Myrtle Beach; a brother, Phynix Davis of Darlington; six grandchildren; Teri (Dexter) Stone, Renee' (Jim) Larsen, Rushell (Jeff) Bennie, Le (Martha) Flowers, Phyllis (Tom) Sherin and Ronda (Randy) Kemmerlin and nine great–grandchildren.

CECELIA BRYAN
Funeral services for Cecelia Bryan will be held at 3 p.m. today, May 21, 2003, at St. John United Methodist Church with the Rev. Frederick Yebuah, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home.
Mrs. Bryan died Saturday, May 17, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born in Beaufort County, a daughter of the late Thomas and Georgia Rice Bryan. She was educated in the public schools and worked 27 years as a nurse with the Jewish Home and hospital for the aged.
Survivors include her son, Lawrence Bryan of the home; a sister, Wilhelmina Bell of Bronx, N.Y.; two brothers, James Bryan of New York, N.Y., and Cleveland Bryan of Daufuskie; five godchildren, Lois Wilson, Inez Jacobs, Kathy Hannibal, Eva Mae Jacobs and Modestine Jacobs, all of Hartsville.
JOSEPHINE F. JORDAN
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Josephine Franklin Jordan will be held at 1 p.m. today, Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at St. James United Methodist Church with the Rev. Anna G. Miller, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Florence National cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mrs. Jordan, widow of Prince J. Jordan, died Friday, May 16, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Rev. John T. and Neta Evans Franklin.
She received her formal education in the Darlington County public schools, graduating from Mayo High School Class of 1945. She continued her education at S.C. State College, Orangeburg, where she earned a business degree. She worked for the Darlington County School District for 18 years as the secretary of Rosenwald High School, Society Hill, and later was employed by the Darlington County Community Action Agency from which she retired. She was a member of St. James United Methodist Church where she served on many boards and councils. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and the DEWS.
She was a charter member of the Essie F. Harlee Assembly No. 5 Order of Golden Circle, past illustrious commander for Crescent Court No. 143, Florence, and deputy of the oasis, the first secretary for the Ordie P. Taylor Jr. State Grant Assembly, member of Excelsior Temple No. 790, Darlington, and past daughter ruler of this temple. Other affiliations include Mayo High School Alumni and the Women's Business Club as secretary.
Survivors include six daughters, Joanne (Ronnie) Benson, Nita (Roger) Jackson, Patricia (Lauren) Parrott, all of Darlington, Eunice (Danny) Ford of Sumter, Judith (Robert) Dorrah of Greenwood and Bonneva (Duerward) Middleton of Rosells, N.J.; five sons, Kenneth (Emma) Jordan, Charles Jordan, both of Darlington, Rodney (Marie) Jordan of Hamden, Conn., Anthony (Celeste) Jordan of Orlando, Fla., and Marvin (Gina) Jordan of Greensboro, N.C.; one sister, Mrs. Ethel Bramham of Darlington; two brothers, Benjamin Frankliin of Darlington and Woodrow Franklin of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five sisters–in–law; one brother–in–law; 23 grandchildren; 21 great–grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Two brothers, Willie Franklin and John Theodore JT Franklin and an infant son, Dewey Jordan, preceded her in death.
CARLA PREVATTE
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Carla Darlene Prevatte, 38, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Wednesday, May 21, 2003, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Darlington Memory Gardens.
Miss Prevatte died Sunday, May 18, in a Florence hospital. She was born in Bennettsville, the daughter of John C. and Eunice O'Neal Prevatte. She was a 1986 graduate of Southside High School in Florence and was a former Miss State Handicap Queen. She was recognized with numerous awards for her outstanding achievements. Miss Prevatte attended many local churches.
Surviving in addition to her mother and father of Darlington are three sisters, Vickie Beddingfield of Mississippi, Rosemary Schweikart of Timmonsville and Tena Vansant of Charleston; four nieces and one nephew.
JAMES ADAMS
DARLINGTON — Graveside funeral services for James E. Adams, 81, will be held at 5 p.m. today, Wednesday, May 21, 2003, in Black Creek cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Adams died Monday, May 19, in a Hartsville nursing center. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Kinchen and Daisey O'Neal Adams. He served his country with the United States Army and was a retired farmer. He worked at Sav–Way in Hartsville, where he was known as Doc. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Tyner Adams, and son, Kenney Adams, both of Darlington; and four sisters, Peggy Suggs, Eva Humphries, Margaret Moody and Patricia Andrews, all of Darlington.
DEBBIE LANGSTON
LAMAR — Funeral services for Debbie Harris Langston, 51, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 28, 2003, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home, Lamar, with interment following in Lamar cemetery.
Mrs. Langston died Thursday, May 15. She was born in Florence County, a daughter of Lexie Cox Harris and the late James L. Harris. She was a housewife and member of Abundant Life Church.
Surviving are her husband, Larry C. Langston of Lamar; daughter, Kaycie Langston of the home; her mother of Bishopville, and half–sister, Betty Ann Buchanan of Ninety–Six.
Mrs. Langston was preceded in death by a daughter, Lexiebeth Langston.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Debbie Langston Fund c/o Lamar Pentecostal Holiness Church, P. O. Box 395, Lamar, SC 29069.
LULA JONES
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Lula Williamson Bailey Jones, 90, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 18, 2003, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment in Trinity Methodist Church cemetery, Johnsonville.
Mrs. Jones died Thursday, May 15 in a Florence hospital. She was born in the Mars Bluff community of Florence County, daughter of the late McQueen and Minnie Ella Williamson Bailey. She was married
to the late Rautha Jones. She had retired from the cotton mill and in her later years attended First Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Surviving are her son, R. Franklin (Teresa) Jones of Florence; daughter, Linda (Mack) Strickland of Darlington; grandsons, R. Franklin Jones III and Brandon Patrick Jones; granddaughter, Amelinda (Tim) Matthews; sister, Sophie (Ellie) McKissick of Florence and special nieces, Alberta (Eugne) and Anna Parker.
RONALD PRICE
Funeral services for Ronald Price, 40, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 2003, at Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Burial was in Wesley Temple Holiness Church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Price died Wednesday, May 21, after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Henry Lee Price and the late Olivia Robinson Price. He was a graduate of Butler High School Class of 1980. He received an associate degree in automobile mechanics from Florence–Darlington Technical College in 1982.
Mr. Price was self–employed as an automobile mechanic at Price's Garage. He was also employed with the Darlington County School Systems as an auto mechanic instructor for five years. He received his apprenticeship under the guidance of his father at his garage from early adolescenceuntil early adulthood.
Surviving other than his father of Hartsville are his wife, Laura Brewer Price of Hartsville; two sons, Ronald Price Jr. and Ronard Price, both of Hartsville; two sisters, Darlene Muldrow of Indianapolis, Ind., and Ivan Price of Hartsville; a brother, Timothy (Renita) Price of Raleigh, N.C., and a mother–in–law, Amanda S. Brewer of Hartsville.
BONNIE K. ROBINSON
Funeral services for Bonnie Kate Robinson were held at 1 p.m. Monday, May 19, 2003, at Unity Mission Pentecostal Church with burial in Sandy Bluff United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home.
Mrs. Robinson died Thursday, May 15, at Morrell Nursing Home after an illness. She was born in Lee County, a daughter of the late West Indian native Margaret Dubois and Lawrence Spencer. She was educated in the Lee County public schools. She met and married
the late Carlisle Robinson in 1939, and to this union 13 children were born, 12 of which survive her. She was a member of Unity Mission Pentecostal Church, where she served on the Pastor's Aid Society and the Missionary Ministry until her health declined. One son, John Calvin Robinson, preceded her in death.
Survivors are her children, Missionary Shirley (Woodrow) Thomas, Bishop Robert (Fannie Mae) Robinson and Carnell (Grace) Robinson, all of Lamar; Carl E. Robinson, Margaret (Fred) Sansbury, Elder Richard (Cathy) Robinson and Elder Patricia Prince, all of Hartsville, Jeanette Robinson of Brooklyn, N.Y., Elder Larry (Doris) Robinson of Bridgeport, Conn., Deacon Ronnie (LaVerne) Robinson, the Rev. Sylvia Hayes and Levern Robinson, all of Durham, N.C.; one aunt, Essie Parrott; a sister–in–law, Wilhelmenia Washington of Hartsville; 34 grandchildren; 38 great–grandchildren.
JAMES EDWARD BRYANT
Funeral services for James Edward Bryant, 78, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 19, 2003, at Emmanuel Baptist Church. Burial was in Westview Memorial cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home with Dr. Gary Colbach officiating.
Mr. Bryant died Saturday, May 17. He was born in Lynchburg, Va., a son of the late Elzy and Ruth Lyon Bryant. He was a retired railroad engineer, member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and a veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Jean Kelly Bryant of Hartsville; two daughters, Margaret Ann Jackson of Richmond, Va., and Linda (Bernie) Campbell of Timmonsville; two sisters, Ruth Burk of Roanoke, Va., and Elizabeth Hughes of Richmond, Va; brothers, Reuben and Winford Bryant of Lynchburg, Va.; four grandchildren and four great–grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church, 949 N. Marquis Hwy., Hartsville, S. C. 29550.
KEN HOUCK
BELTON — Funeral services for Kenneth Wayne Houck, 60, will be held at 3 p.m. today, May 21, 2003, at Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Belton with the Revs. Dean Webb, Jerry Mize, Landrum Reese and Jimmy Smith, officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Magnolia cemetery in Hartsville, directed by Gray Mortuary, Inc. of Pelzer, S.C.
Mr. Houck, husband of Sara Ellison Houck, died Monday, May 19, at St. Francis Hospital. Born in Hartsville, he was the son of the late Calvin Kenneth and Frances Blackwell Houck. He was a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran, retired conductor from CSX Railroad, and was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church where he was a Sunday school teacher, chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee, and church clerk.
Surviving are his wife of the home; two sons, Todd Houck of Hartsville and Michael Houck of Rankin, Ga.; step–daughter, Tammy Davis of Woodruff; two grandchildren and two step–grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Kimberly Ann Houck.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cedar Grove Baptist Church Organ Fund, 13027 Highway 20, Belton, SC 29627.
