CHARLES WEST

Funeral services for Charles L. West, 67, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 18, 2003, at the chapel of Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home with the Revs. Jeff Gardner and Billy Winburn officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery.

Mr. West died Thursday, May 15. Born in Montgomery County, Ark., he was a son of the late Tom L. and Beulah Hatton West. He was a member of Gum Branch Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was retired with 35 years of service from International Paper.

Surviving are his wife, Thelma Winburn West of Hartsville; daughter, Wendy Becky Watkins of Hartsville; sister, Barbara West Johnson of Mt. Ida, Ark.; grandchildren, Joseph Watkins and Nichole Watkins; step–grandchildren, Toni Watkins and Donnie Watkins.

EUNICE MILLER

Mrs. Eunice Miller, 82, wife of the late Gary E. Miller Jr, entered into her rest Friday, May 16, 2003, after a brief illness. Mass of Christian burial was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Father Karl Reosch, celebrant. Final commendation and farewell prayers were at Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Miller was born in Garyville, La., and moved to Hartsville in 1945. Eunice was a founding and dedicated member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She gave cookies and a God Bless You to every child who knocked on her door. She was not only a blessing to the Catholic community, but to all in Hartsville who witnessed her love for all people and her steadfast faith in God.

Her survivors are Rebecca Ferris of Maryland and her husband Wayne; Diane Miller of Columbia and her daughter Kathleen; Ruthie Hancock of Florence and her sons Matt of Columbia and Tommy of Colorado; Bob Miller of Florence and his wife Jonnie and their children Philip and Rachel; Roberta Miller–Haraway of Raleigh and her husband Rick; John Miller of Georgetown and his children Michael and Meredith; James Miller of Maryland and his wife Judy and their children David and Lisa; Margee Waddell of Florence and her husband Jimmy and their children Jamie of Tennessee, Ashley, Jody, Whitney, Sloane and Mary Beth of Florence; Teresa Thomas of Rock Hill and her husband Mark. Her sisters from Louisiana are Elise Zeringue, Gertrude Walker, Inez Blanc and Elsie Cambre. Four brothers predeceased her. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church; 363 N. Church St.; Hartsville, SC 29550 or Carolina's Hospital Systems Charity Fund; 800 Pamplico Hwy., Florence, SC 29506.

CORA L. ROBINSON

Cora L. Robinson, 93, died Tuesday in Morrell Memorial Nursing Home after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Mary Jett, 614 High Hill Road, Darlington.

DANNY E. BILLINGS

HARPERS FERRY, W. Va. — Memorial Mass of Christian burial for Danny Earl Billings, 42, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 2003, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hartsville with private interment, directed by Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home of Charles Town, W. Va.

Mr. Billings, husband of Sally A. (Small) Billings, died Wednesday, May 14, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W. Va. He was born in Union, a son of Nora Messer Billings and the late Carroll D. Billings. He had been a nuclear engineer with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in Rockville, Md., for many years. He attended St. James Catholic Church in Charles Town, W. Va.

He received his BS degree from the University of Maryland and his master's from Southern Wesleyan University. Mr. Billings served in the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his wife of the home; his mother of South Carolina; a son, Joshua Billings of Rockfort, S.C.; three daughters, Shannon Billings of Darlington, Melissa Griggs of Hartsville and Rebecca Griggs of Columbia; two sisters, Linda Simmons of Woodruff and Debbi Hughes of Michigan; and one brother, Donald Billings of Enoree.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 7320 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX 75231.

LESLIE LEO MILLER

DARLINGTON — Graveside services for Leslie Leo Miller, 52, were held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 15, 2003, in Indian Branch cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Elton Miller and directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.

Mr. Miller died Tuesday, May 13. He was born in Darlington County and was the son Mary Elizabeth Lloyd Miller and the late Leo Leslie Miller. He was retired from the body shop business and enjoyed hunting.

Mr. Miller was preceded in death by his father, and two brothers, Wayne Miller and Jackie Miller.

Survivors include his wife, Janice James Miller of the home; his mother, Lib Miller of Darlington; a son, Michael Starling (Christy) Miller of Hartsville; a daughter, Stacy Miller of Darlington; a brother, Johnny (Vonda) Miller of Latta; and a sister, Mary (Calvin) Gray of Darlington.

RONALD PRICE

Mr. Ronald Price, 40, died Wednesday, May 14, after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.

BONNIE K. ROBINSON

Mrs. Bonnie Kate Robinson died on Wednesday, May 15, 2003, at the Morrell Convalescent Center after an extended illness. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Hartsville. The Robinson family will receive visitors at the residence.

VERNETTER JOE

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Vernetter Monkey Joe were held at 3 p.m. Monday, May 12, 2003, at Center Baptist Church with the Rev. Jackie Boyd, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Hart No. 2 cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.

Mrs. Joe died Wednesday, May 7, in a local nursing home after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, the daughter of the late Preston and Lillie McDaniel Mumford. She received her formal education in Darlington area schools. She was a loyal member of Center Baptist Church where she was a member of the senior choir and the missionary society. She was married to Willie Joe.

Survivors include six grandchildren, James (Carolyn) Joe of Darlington, Clarence (Lillie Mae) Joe of Timmonsville, Barbara Hicks, Lillie Cooper, Willie Joe and Leroy Joe, all of New York; 13 great–grandchildren; eight great–great–grandchildren; a special cousin, Joe Lunnon of Darlington. Her only child, Leroy Bo Joe, preceded her in death.

DANNY MOORE SR.

Funeral services for Danny LaRue Moore Sr., 53, were held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 13, 2003, at the chapel of Norton Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronald Smalley officiating and burial in Westview Memorial cemetery.

Mr. Moore died Saturday, May 10. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Henry V. Moore and the late Sadie Yarborough Moore. He was employed with the Darlington County Sanitation Dept. and worked for Sonoco Products Co. for 28 years.

Surviving are his father of Hartsville; a daughter, Danielle Moore Wallace of Mt. Airy, N.C.; a son, Danny LaRue Moore Jr. of Hartsville; three sisters, Christie Moore and Cindy Evans, both of Hartsville, and Alice Kelly of Darlington; two brothers, Carl Moore of Hartsville and Leland Moore of Sanford, N.C.; and a grandson, Burt H. Wallace Jr., of Mt. Airy, N.C.

HAGAN WEAVER

DARLINGTON — A graveside service for Hagan Elizabeth Weaver was held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2003, in Will Of Faith Southern Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Hagan, the infant daughter of Angie and Chuck Weaver, died Sunday afternoon, May 11, in a Florence hospital.

Surviving in addition to her parents are one brother, Wesley Weaver of the home; paternal grandparents, Wayne and Nelia Weaver of Lamar; maternal grandparents, Tommy and Jeanette Yarborough of Lamar; and a great–grandfather, Robert White of Darlington.

Memorials are suggested to McLeod's Children Hospital, 555 East Cheves St., Florence, SC 29501.

CHESTER McQUEEN

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Chester McQueen, 69, were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 10, 2003, at the First Church of God with pastor Norman Mitchell officiating. Interment was in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. McQueen died Thursday, May 8, at a Florence hospital. He was born in Robeson County, N.C., son of the late Olin and Mamie Sessoms McQueen. He was a retired member of the South Carolina National Guard and had retired after 32 years with DuPont. He was a master electrician and owner of McQueen's Electric and member of St. David's Lodge and of the First Church of God.

Surviving are his wife, Mary W. McQueen of Darlington; five sons, David S. (Cathy) Kemmerlin, Bobby J. Kemmerlin, Tony S. (Annette) Kemmerlin, Ray A. (Darlene) Kemmerlin and Timmy D. (Misty) Kemmerlin, all of Darlington; one daughter, Sarah (James) Warren of Darlington; 11 grandchildren; and one sister, Ruby McQueen Isgett of Darlington.

Mr. McQueen was preceded in death by sisters, Alleane McQueen Lewis and Gladys McQueen Hayes and brothers, S. J. McQueen and Marvin McQueen.

RUPERT GRAY SR.

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Rupert A. Gray Sr., 74, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 10, 2003, at High Hill Baptist Church with interment following in the church cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Gray died Thursday, May 8, at his home. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Al and Esther Harvey Gray. He was married to the late Louise Hatchell Gray. He was a graduate of St. John's High School and member of the South Carolina National Guard. Mr. Gray was a retired farmer and then employed by the Darlington County Prison Farm. He was a lifelong member of High Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are three sons and daughters–in–law, Rupert Al and Margee Gray Jr., of Chester, Calvin and Mary Gray of Darlington and Robbie S. Gray, also of Darlington; five grandchildren; one brother, John Gray of Darlington, and a special friend, Charles Gibbs of Timmonsville.

Mr. Gray was preceded in death by a sister, Mary G. Stokes.

Memorials are suggested to High Hill Baptist Church, c/o 2205 Timmonsville Highway, Darlington, SC 29532.

JAMES T. JORDAN

Funeral services for James T. Jordan, 78, will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 15, 2003, at Cedar Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Mark Driskill, Ed Griggs and Vernon Lewis officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be tonight, Wednesday, from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Jordan died May 12. He was born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Henry Dargan and Minnie Lewis Jordan. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co. after 47 1/2 years of service, was a member of the Old Timers Club and a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Isgett Jordan of Hartsville; son, Jimmy (Sandra) Jordan also of Hartsville; two brothers, J. E. Jordan and Henry Jordan, both of Patrick; two grandchildren, Robbie (Kim) Jordan of Georgetown and Lynn (George) Campbell of Hartsville; and six great–grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Cornerstone Baptist Church, PO Box 1470, Hartsville, SC 29551.

JAMES WEATHERFORD

Graveside services for James Weatherford, 46, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2003, in Cedar Creek Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Frankie Tanner officiating and Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home was in charge.

Mr. Weatherford died Saturday, May 10, 2003. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Johnny Coleman and Annie Gainey Weatherford.

Surviving are his sons, Jeffrey Scott Weatherford of Darlington, Matthew Aaron Phillips of Florence; daughter, Amanda Claudette Miles of Darlington; step–daughter, Patricia Lee McGee of Darlington; sister, Leila Grace Hilburn of Nichols; brother, Donnie Allen Weatherford of Hartsville; ex–wife, Angela M. Weatherford Gandy of Darlington; step–daughter, Pam McGee of Darlington; special friends, Carolyn Campbell and Juliette Jarrell, both of Darlington. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Leila Gainey, and a daughter, Brittany Nicole Weatherford.

JOE JOHNSON

Funeral services for Joseph Joe Wesley Johnson Jr., 72, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at Fourth Street Baptist Church. The Rev. Brad Lynch, the Rev. George Hawkins and T. M. Burriss Sr. will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Fourth Street Baptist Church, 501 S. 4th St., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mr. Johnson died Sunday, May 11, 2003. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Joseph Wesley and Mary Johnson Johnson Sr. He was a member of Fourth Street Baptist Church and was the previous owner and operator of Johnson Fence & Awning. He was a member of the Hartsville Masonic Lodge No. 173, the Omar Shrine, and the Woodmen of the World.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Hawkins Johnson of Hartsville; daughters and sons–in–law, Kay and Randy Coggins of Statesville, N.C., Ann and Carl Rogers of Hartsville, Tammy Johnson of Columbia; sisters, Elsie Byrd of Hartsville, Nora Johnson of Columbia; brother and sister–in–law, Noel and Zeta Johnson of Hartsville; grandchildren, Janet Coggins, Scott Coggins, Laura Coggins, Jessica Rogers, Bianca Rogers, Millie Rogers, Mack Rogers and Victoria Rogers.
