Funeral services for Thomas W. Smith, 60, were held at 4 p.m. Monday, May 12, 2003, at Mount Elon Baptist Church with the Revs. Robbin King and Jeff Gardner officiating. Burial followed in Mount Elon Baptist Church directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Mt. Elon Baptist Church Building Fund.
Mr. Smith died Friday, May 2, 2003. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Osborne Lee and Florence Howell Smith. He attended Mt. Elon Baptist Church, and was the owner and operator of Tommy's Self Service. He started working at the age of 13 at the corner store in Lydia with Guy Gainey. A butcher by trade, he was well known for his homemade sausage, barbecue chicken, ribs, and world famous hot dogs. He also had a great love for antique automobiles.
Surviving are his wife, Brenda Dampier Smith of Bishopville; sons and daughter–in–law, Glenn and Dana Smith of Florence, Steve Smith of Jensen Beach, Fla.; daughter, Lisa A. Smith of Charleston; sisters, Annie Sue Tyner of Hartsville, Betty Jean Tyner of Patrick; brother, Heyward Smith; grandchild, Madison Nicole (Sweet Pea) Smith.
He was preceded in death by his father Osborne Smith, his mother Florence Smith, his brother Cyril Smith, his brothe r James Smith, and his sister Florine Smith.
ANNETTE GAINEY
Funeral services for Ruth Annette Cooley Gainey, 39, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 10, 2003, at Fourth Street Baptist Church. The Revs. Brad Lynch and Dave Worthington will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Gainey died Wednesday, May 7, 2003. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of Richard and Edna Hancock Cooley. She was a member of Fourth Street Baptist Church and was a captain with Security Management.
Surviving are her husband, James R. Gainey of Hartsville; sons, John Robert Jones and Richard Brandon Jones, both of Hartsville; daughters, Jennifer Lee Jones of Hartsville and Crystal Marie Jones of Augusta, Ga.; father and mother of Hartsville; sister, Marie Schaff of Hartsville; and brother, Keith Cooley of Hartsville.
JOHNNIE E. GREGG
HINESVILLE, Ga. — Funeral services for retired Staff Sgt. Johnnie E. Gregg, 55, were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2003, in Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Hinesville, Ga. Burial followed in the church cemetery, with local announcements by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home of Darlington.
Mr. Gregg died Friday, April 25, in Candler Hospital in Savannah, Ga. He was born in Darlington, a son of Wilhelmena Muldrow Gregg and the late Robert Gregg Sr.
He received his formal education in Darlington County public schools, graduating from Mayo High School in 1965. He served his country in the Army and was honorably discharged. After he retired from military service, he made Liberty County his home. He was employed by the Army Air Force Exchange System in Fort Stewart as a truck driver. He served as head deacon at Victory Chapel Multicultural Service at Fort Stewart.
Survivors include his wife, Wilma A. Gregg of Hinesville; his mother, Wilhelmena M. Gregg of Darlington; two sons, Johnnie Gregg Jr. of Goose Creek and Andre J. Gregg of Hinesville; a daughter, Angela A. Gregg of Hinesville; five brothers, James (Mary) Gregg of Darlington, Robert (Ralphine) Gregg Jr. of Woodbridge, Va., Ezekiel (Heather) Gregg of Brooklyn, N.Y., Willie Earl Gregg of Wilmington, N.C. and Broadus (Ruth) Gregg of Conway; four sisters, Mabel (Preston) Sims, Etta Brown, Cheryl Gregg, all of Wilmington, N.C. and Jannie Cosom of Darlington; two grandchildren; aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
ALLEN L. TONEY
Funeral services for Allen L. Toney, 21, will be held at 4 p.m. today, May 7, 2003, in Nazareth Apostolic Church with Dr. Bishop Vera M. Davis officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Toney died Friday, May 2. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Mary McCoy Washington and the late William Toney Jr. He was educated in the public schools of Darlington County.
Surviving other than his mother of Hartsville are two brothers, Jessie Washington and Marquel Toney, of Hartsville; his paternal grandparents, William and Dorothy Toney of Hartsville; his maternal grandmother, Mary McCoy of Hartsville; a dear and special aunt, Helen Toney of Hartsville, Peggy (Lee) Benjamin and Tayna (Dezereaux) Jeff, both of Florence; other aunts, Carolyn McCall, Glenda Alford, Dora McCoy and Mae Helen Stevenson, all of Hartsville; five uncles, Bobby (Sylvia) McCoy, Clenden (Shirley) McCoy, Eddie Ray (Linda) McCoy and Leroy McCall, all of Hartsville, Calvin McCoy of Bennettsville; three step–brothers, Derrick (Nicole) Washington of Hartsville and Jermel (Diana) Washington of Richmond, Va.; a step–sister, Karen (Tracy) Mouzon of Florence, Lisa Hawkins of Columbia, Andrew Hawkins and Jackie Douglas, both of Darlington.

Funeral services for Elizabeth Winburn Byrd, 83, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. The Revs. Gary Wells and Ed Griggs will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Byrd, widow of Oatzel Byrd, died Sunday, May 4, 2003. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late James C. and Delia Howle Winburn. She was a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church.
Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Ernest and Betty Byrd of Hartsville; daughter, Janice Byrd of Florence; sister, Ester Hoffman of Florence; grandchildren, Teresa Earle, William Byrd, and Mark Byrd; and 11 great–grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Harley Byrd, her brothers, James Winburn and William Winburn, and her sister, Mary Teal Griggs.
LARRY G. CAGLE
PATRICK — Funeral services for Larry Glen Cagle, 50, will be held today, May 7, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Brown Springs Baptist Church, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington with burial in the church cemetery.
Mr. Cagle died Sunday, May 4, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late William Wesley and Ethel Gainey Cagle. He worked at Patrick Auto Parts for over 20 years. Mr. Cagle attend Brown Springs Baptist Church and enjoyed working on cars. He was predeceased by one daughter, Judy Boatwright Johnson, one brother, Thomas Clifton Cagle, and two sisters, Frances Griggs and Mildred Collins.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel Jordan Cagle of Patrick; three brothers, Steve Cagle, Bill Cagle and James Cagle, all of Hartsville; three sisters, Bertha Gainey, Barbara Ann Belle Cagle and Beatrice Bell, all of Hartsville; two grandchildren, Tonya Johnson and Cayce Johnson; and one great–grandson, Landon Johnson.
CORINNE G. MISHOE
Funeral services for Corinne Galloway Mishoe, 84, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2003, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Bob Cline officiating. Burial was in Cedardale cemetery at 3 p.m. in Mullins. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, PO Box 69, Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mrs. Mishoe, widow of James Norman Mishoe, died Saturday, May 3. Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Harvey Preston and Ada Theresa Geddings Galloway. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and was a Sunday school teacher for many years.
Surviving are her daughter and son–in–law, Norma and Jerry Mahn of Hartsville; grandchildren and spouses, Traci (Jeff) Farrington of Greer, Ryan (Naomi) Pittington of Hartsville, Jay (Julie) Mahn of Hartsville; and six great–grandchildren.
MARTHA R. DOUGLAS
LAMAR — Funeral services for Martha Samuel Robinson Douglas of Timmonsville, were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 4, 2003, at Bethany Baptist Church, Lamar, with the Rev. Emanuel Simon, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Plaza Memorial cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mrs. Douglas died Tuesday morning, April 29, in a Florence hospital after an extended illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Allison and Rosa Lee Damon Samuel. She was the widow of Lawton Robinson. She received her formal education in the Darlington County public schools. At an early age, she joined Savannah Grove A.M.E. Church. Years later, she joined Bethany Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Bettie Douglas and Elouise Mack, both of Timmonsville; a son, James (Hermenia) Robinson of Tabor City, N.C.; four sisters, Jessie Mae Abson, Fannie Lee Holmes, both of Lamar, Catherine Abson and Louise Woods, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three brothers, Henry Lee (Mable) Samuel, Moses (Patricia) Samuel, both of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Melvin (Deloris) Samuel of Queens, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren including a special grandson, Travis Douglas; 13 great–grandchildren; two great–great–grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Jacqueline Mack.
Two sons preceded her in death, Levan Robinson and Willie James Robinson.
CAROLYN E. SMITH
NORRIS, Tenn. — Ms. Carolyn Elizabeth Smith, 61, died on April 30, 2003, in Norris, Tenn. Ms. Smith, formerly of Hartsville, is survived by her only child, Frankie Lee Smith, daughter–in–law, Debra, and grandchildren, Hanna Grace Smith (7) and Nathaniel Grayson Smith (5) , all of Knoxville, Tenn.; a sister, Thelma Schaaff of Simi Valley, Calif., and a brother, Charles Tyner of Hartsville, along with many other nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were by Highland Memorial Funeral Home of Knoxville, Tenn.
BESSIE THOMAS
Funeral services for Bessie Thomas were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at New Hopewell Baptist Church in Society Hill with pastor Calvin Daniels officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mrs. Thomas, wife of Arthur Thomas Jr., was born Dec. 3, 1919, in Darlington County and was the daughter of the late James and Beersheba Joyner London. She was a lifetime member of the New Hopewell Baptist Church where she served as a deaconess and a member of the Missionary and Pastor's Aide Society.
Surviving in addition to her husband of the home are three daughters, Hazel (David) Walker of Odenton, Md., Diane (James Jr.) Brown of Darlington and Queenie (Samuel) Lyons of Hartsville; five sons, Edgar (Leona) Thomas and Dennie (Mable) Thomas all of Seymour, Conn., Franklin (Minnie) Thomas of Woodlawn, Md., Robert (Rebecca) Thomas of Hartsville and Carey Thomas of Burlington, N.J.; four sisters, Lottie McPhail of Society Hill, Beersheba Rhodes, Delia McPhail and Georgianna London, all of Ansonia, Conn.; one sister–in–law, Nettie Evans of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one brother–in–law, Cleveland Thomas of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 29 grandchildren; 27 great–grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

Sam Murphy died on Thursday, May 1, 2003, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence, 330 Jasper Ave.

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Sidney (Nook) O'Neal, Sr., 73, will be held at 4 p.m. today, May 2, 2003, in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Monel Smith, officiating. Burial will be in Centerville A.M.E. Church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. O'Neal died Friday, April 25, after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Elias and Maggie Joe O'Neal. He received his education in the public schools of Darlington County. Mr. O'Neal was a member of Centerville A.M.E. Church. He was employed with H. B. Robinson Plant (Progress Energy) Ebasco for 29 years and served in the Army during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. O'Neal was preceded in death by his wife, Margie McClendon O'Neal.
Those left to cherish his memories are a son, Sidney O'Neal Jr. of Tacoma, Wa.; two daughters, Cindy O'Neal (Milton) Grooms of Lamar and Josephine S. (Sammie) Bailey and children of Hartsville; grandchildren, Carl and Yvonne Grooms of Lamar, Aaron, Maria, Micholas and Jacob O'Neal, all of Tacoma, Wa.; two sisters, Annie Mae Toney of Hartsville and Rosa Lee (Alvin) Jackson of Savannah, Ga.; and a host of close relatives and friends.

LAMAR — Funeral services for Mary Donna Parnell Segars, 78, will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2003, at Philadelphia Southern Methodist Church. The Rev. Dan Thigpen will officiate with burial in Newman Swamp cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Friday, May 2 from 6–8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Segars, widow of Francis Fields and Hart Segars, died Thursday, May 1, 2003. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late John Ira and Janie Byrd Parnell. She was a long time member of Lamar First Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher and director of the WMU. Currently she was a member of Philadelphia Southern Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher. She was retired from AgFirst Farm Credit Services.
Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Billy and Cheryl Fields of Hartsville; grandchildren, Jason Fields and Stacie Fields; step–children, Carroll Segars, Cindy Bladel and Marsha Odom, 10 step–grandchildren; and nine step–great–grandchildren.

Mrs. Booth, widow of Hubert R. Booth, died Saturday, April 26, 2003. Born in Horry County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Curtis and Vivian Vaught Floyd. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, the McKorell — Jordan Circle, and the Pine & Lake Garden Club.
Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Hubert J. (Pete) and Mary Ann Booth of Dalton, Ga.; daughter and son–in–law, Vivian and Fred Harris of Hartsville; sister and brother–in–law, Myra Floyd and James Parker of Marion; daughter–in–law, Dolores Booth of Huntersville, N.C.; grandchildren, Robin Hudson, Ilene Roach, Fred Harris Jr., Janson V. Booth II; great–grandchildren, Freddy Harris, Ryan Harris, Chris Harris, Katy Booth, Sara Booth, Burt Hudson, Brad Hudson; several nephews; several nieces.
