SOCIETY HILL — Funeral services for Charlotte Everett, 76, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary Wells officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 1, 2003, in Cheltenham Veterans cemetery, Cheltenham, Md. Memorials may be made to the Harris Creek Volunteer Fire Dept., 2464 Byrd Rd., Society Hill, SC 29593.
Mrs. Everett, widow of Benjamin Everett and Anthony Wackerle, died Saturday, April 26, 2003. Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., she was a daughter of the late John Alexander and Margaret Conboy McCaw. She attended Mt. Olivet Baptist Church and was retired from Suburban Trust Co. (Bank of America) , Hyattsville, Md.
Surviving are her daughters, Mardy Jackson of Society Hill, Judy Sobek of Annapolis, Md., Beth Carey of Gaithersburg, Md.; sons, Anthony Wackerle of Frederick, Md., Steve Everett of Valdosta, Ga., Danny Everett of Frederick, Md.; sisters, Mary Ann Stern and Kathleen Salazar, both of Fairfax, Va.; brother, Joe McCaw of Yulee, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; and five great–grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathleen Wade.
CLARA MAE KETTER
Funeral services for Clara Mae Ketter, 70, were held at 12 noon Monday, April 28, 2003, at New Hopewell Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mrs. Ketter died Tuesday, April 22, in Queens, N.Y., after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Moses and Victoria Ketter. She was a member of New Hopewell Baptist Church, and after moving to New York, she was a very active and dedicated member of St. Paul Church of God the Faithful Saint in St. Albans, N.Y.
Surviving are a son, Khalid Allah (Sandra) of New York City; three grandchildren, eight siblings, Lillie Bell (Vick) , Vara, Easter, all of New York, Fannie of Georgia, Mary Jane, Ray, Luke and Grant Sr., all of Darlington; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
WILLIAM JOE BEATY
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for William Joe Beaty, 66, were held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, 2003, in New Hopewell Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Beaty died Tuesday, April 22, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Boykin and Lucinder Bonaparte Beaty. He received his education in the public schools of Darlington County and was a member of New Hopewell Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Leroy McCoy of Florida; a sister, Lucile Sims of Hartsville; a brother, Isaiah Beaty of Darlington; an aunt, Betty Bonaparte of Bermuda, Calif., and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
ERNEST LEWIS
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Ernest Lewis, 77, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 27, 2003, at Mechanicsville Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Frankie Tanner. Interment followed in the church cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Lewis died Friday, April 25. He was born in Horry County, son of the late Charlie Benjamin and Ovie Williamson Lewis. He was married
to the late Iris Strickland Lewis and after her death to the late Aliene McQueen Lewis. Mr. Lewis was a lifetime farmer and member of the Men's Sunday School Class and Mechanicsville Baptist Church.
Of his marriage to Iris, surviving are the following: three sons, Dorla (Faye) Lewis, Roger (Linda) Lewis and Danny (Virginia) Lewis, all of Darlington; a daughter, Wanda (Robert) Johnson, also of Darlington; nine grandchildren, Cindy Gibbons, Abe Lewis, Marifaye Lewis, Minnie Stokes, Lee Lewis, Roger Lewis Jr., Robert Johnson Jr., Paula Lewis and Justin Lewis; nine great–grandchildren; two brothers, Edward Lewis of Darlington and Roy (Wilma) Lewis of Georgia; five sisters, Essie (Jack) Smith of Myrtle Beach, Marilyn Privette, Viola (Buddy) Tadlock, Carolyn (Alvin) McCormick and Genise Snider, all of Darlington.
Mr. Lewis was preceded in death by a sister, Velma Hilburn.
Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E.Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.
EMMANUEL K. MOSES
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Emmanuel Kajuan Moses, 2, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 1, 2003, in Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel with burial in Faith Memorial Gardens, directed by Hines Funeral Home.
Master Woods died Saturday, April 26, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born in Florence County, a son of Aletha Wood and Edward Moses.
Survivors in addition to his parents are siblings, NyQuan Woods and Ikira Woods; grandmother, Marlene James of New York; and great–grandparents, Marlene and Francisco Woods of Darlington.
JOSEPH A. MEDLIN III
ROCK HILL — Funeral services for Joseph Joey Alexander Medlin III, 50, were held at 3 p.m. Friday, April 25, 2003, in the of Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel with interment in Forest Hills cemetery, with the Rev. Jeff Gardner officiating.
Mr. Medlin died Wednesday, April 23. He was the son of Joseph Alexander Medlin Jr. and the late Norma Sink Medlin. He was the owner/operator of Medlin Auto Body & Paint Shop in Rock Hill and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his father, he is survived by his son, Stephen Medlin of Rock Hill; two daughters, Brooke Brazzell and Brantley Medlin, both of Rock Hill; his step–mother, Rachel Medlin of Hartsville; his step–brother, Michael Doyle Jr. of Hartsville; and his grandson, Devon Brazzell.

MARGARET B. GARDINER
TITUSVILLE, Fla. — Margaret Ballard Gardiner, 89, passed away Wed., April 23, 2003, in Titusville, Fla. She was a native of Hartsville and the daughter of Sam and Mattie Ballard. She was a graduate of Hartsville High School.
She is survived by two sons, Louis and Ronald Mitchell of Mims, Fla; a brother, Sam Ballard of York, S.C.; two sisters, Emily Mahek an Pauline Scheppner of Darlington; several grandchildren, great–grandchildren and one great–great–granddaughter.
Interment was in the family plot in Lagrange cemetery in Mims, Fla. Beckman–Williamson Funeral Home, Cocoa Beach, was in charge of arrangements.
SMITH BARBER
CASTLE HAYNE, N.C. — Funeral services for Smith Barber, 74, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 24, 2003, at Wrightsboro Baptist Church in Wilmington, N.C., by the Rev. Keith Hollar and Dr. Harvey Whaley. Interment followed in Sea Lawn Memorial Park, Hampstead, N.C., directed by Andrews Mortuary of Wilmington, N.C.
Mr. Barber died Tuesday, April 22. He was born on April 12, 1929, the son of the late Mary Smith and David Claude Barber in Marietta, Ga.
He served in the USMC from 1946 to 1949, and was called back into service in 1950 to 1951. He retired from CP&L; after 41 years of service. He was a 32– degree Mason and member of York Rites. His two passions were golfing and teaching flying. He was a certified flight instructor. He also enjoyed putting on golf tournaments, mainly Seacoast Golf Tournament, for the past 27 years and Wrightsboro Baptist Church Youth Tournament. He was a member of Wrightsboro Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, David, in 1989.
Surviving him are his beloved wife of 52 years, Yvonne Higley Barber; daughter, Terry Gitzinger and grandsons, Matthew and Nathan of Raleigh, N.C.; daughter, Sandy B. (John) Auten and granddaughters Von Cranford, LaDonna Rhoad and Barbie Lyles, all of Hartsville; son, Robert Smitty (Cindy) Barber and grandchildren, Ashley and Shane Barber of Castle Hayne, N.C., and grandsons David and Ryan Barber of Wilmington, N.C.; two adopted daughters, Betsy (Ernie) Hendrix and their sons, Josh and Michael Hendrix of Lexington, and Gail (Jimmy) Benton of Greensboro, N.C.; two great– grandchildren, Marlie and Mackenzie Cranford of Hartsville; a sister, Nell (J.T.) Lee of Holden Beach, N.C.; and two brothers, D.C. (Bobbie Jean) Barber of Bransville, N.C. and Bruce (Carol) Barber of Clinton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wrightsboro Baptist Youth Ministries, 2736 Castle Hayne Rd., Wilmington, NC 28401 or the Shriner's Hospital for Children, PO Drawer 490, New Bern, NC 28560.
MARY F. BAXLEY
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Mary F. Baxley, 79, were held at 11 a.m on Wednesday, April 23, 2003, in the chapel of Kistler– Hardee Funeral Home. Burial followed in Darlington Memory Gardens.
Mrs. Baxley, widow of Thomas L. Baxley, died Monday, April 21. Born in Darlington County, she was the daughter of the late Ross Uel and Margaret Jarvis Fox. She was a member of Southside Freewill Baptist Church. Mrs. Baxley was a homemaker.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas L. Baxley Jr. of Studio City, Calif., and Ron (Laura) Baxley of Darlington; one daughter, Shara (Rod) Follin of Burlington, N.C.; one brother, J. Dan (Sara) Fox of Conway; two grandchildren, Victoria Follin and Robert Baxley; and a number of nieces and nephews.
BERTHA MAE GEORGE
LAMAR — Funeral services for Bertha Mae Hilton George will be held at 3 p.m. today, April 25, 2003, in the Church of Christ in the Cypress Community with Bro. Leo Harkless, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Plaza Memorial Gardens in Lamar, directed by Hines Funeral Home of Lamar.
Mrs. George died Sunday, April 20, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in the Carterville community to the late Isaac and Beatrice Stokes Hilton. She was educated in the public schools and was married
to the late Bubbie George. She attended the Church of Christ and was a homemaker most of her life.
Survivors are four daughters, Pearlie Mae (James) McClain, Carolyn Annette George, Bernice (Larry) Price and Bernette Brunson, all of Lamar; four sons, Edward (Thomasena) George, Knorphe George, both of Lamar, Edward (Letitia) Gibson of Columbus, Ga., and Gerald Stevenson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four sisters, Bessie (Johnnie) Benjamin, Barbara (Jimmy) Johnson, Sarah (Jerome) Robinson, all of Lamar, and Gladys Akanno of Oklahoma City, Okla.; four brothers, Herbert Hilton of Freeport, N.Y., James Hilton of Timmonsville, Robert Hilton of Bennettsville, and Isaac Hilton of Conway; 33 grandchildren and 12 great– grandchildren.
JOY A. SHUMATE SR.
Private services for Joy A.Shumate Sr., 91, who died April 23, 2003, were conducted by Norton Funeral Home.
Mr. Shumate was born in Darlington County, the son of the late Andrew and Florrie Gainey Shumate. He was retired from Sonoco Products Company after 44 years of service and was a member of Old Timers Club. He was the oldest charter member of Lakeview Baptist where he remained very active during his lifetime.
Surviving are son and daughter– in– law, J. A. Dink (Gerlyn) Shumate Jr. of Hartsville; a brother, Harvey Shumate of Hartsville; two grandchildren, Debbie (Chris) Ridenhour and Steve (Teral) Shumate, both of Hartsville; three great– grandchildren, Stephen Ridenhour of Lexington, Rayn Ridenhour and Drew Shumate, both of Hartsville; and one great– great grandchild, Jacob Ridenhour of Lexington.

IDA MAE HOPKINS
Funeral services for Ida Mae Hopkins, 71, were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 24, 2003, at First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge with the Rev. Billy Campbell officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Brown– Pennington– Atkins Funeral Home.
Ms. Hopkins died Tuesday, April 22, 2003. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Brock and Eadie Bell Hall Hopkins. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge.
Surviving are her sisters and brother– in– law, Sandra Faye Hopkins of Hartsville, Sharon and Terry Matheny of Florence; brothers and sisters– in– law, William E. and Sarah Hopkins of Union, Pete and Carolyn Hopkins, Brockie Hopkins Jr., Theodore Hopkins, David Hopkins and LaHarve Hopkins, all of Hartsville.

Graveside services for Guyline Woodley Swindler, 76, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Friday, April 25, 2003, in Magnolia cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Bob Cline will officiate and Brown– Pennington– Atkins Funeral Home is in charge.
Mrs. Swindler died Tuesday, April 22, 2003. Born in White County, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late Guy and Ella Killian Woodley. She was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Dr. Jim Swindler of Winston– Salem, N.C.; daughter and son– in– law, Ann and Jim Goff of Winston– Salem, N.C.; sisters, Ella Jo Goodwin of Aurora, Ind., Pauline Green of Sparta, Tenn.; and grandchildren, Stephanie Hart, Jennifer Payne.

Graveside services for Kevin Douglas Austin, 39, were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at Westview Memorial Park cemetery with the Rev. Ed Griggs officiate, directed by Brown– Pennington– Atkins Funeral Home.
Mr. Austin died Monday, April 21, 2003. Born in Tampa, Fla., he was a son of Samuel S. and Donna Dolores Majors. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, and was the owner of Net– Metrix Communications Consultants, LLC.
Surviving are his wife, Cynthia L. Austin of Bethune; son, Grayson James Austin of Bethune; daughter, Angelika Nichole Austin of Bethune; father and mother, of Bethune; sisters, Elisa Dixon of Hartsville, Cathy Kilgo of Monroe, N.C., Wanda J. Long of Plant City, Fla.; brothers, Alan A. Austin of Lincolnton, Ga., Kenneth W. Baker of Kershaw, Rusty Wiggly of Kershaw.
