RAYMOND GAINEY

SOCIETY HILL — Funeral services for Raymond Ervin Gainey, 56, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Friday, April 25, 2003, at Welsh Neck Baptist Church. The Revs. Tom Rutan and Wayne Hodge will officiate with burial in Edwards Chapel cemetery, directed by Brown– Pennington– Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 2711 Middleburg Dr. Suite 311, Columbia SC 29204.

Mr. Gainey died Tuesday, April 22, 2003. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Archie and Maza Lee Outlaw Gainey. He was the owner and operator of Gainey's Well Digging for more than 40 years. He loved to farm and fish and was an Outstanding Member of the Community Award winner.

Surviving are his wife, Delores Gainey of Society Hill; sons, Raymond Gainey Jr., Richard Gainey, Bill Gainey, all of Society Hill; daughters, Lisa Sissy Gainey and Dorothy Freeman, both of Society Hill; sisters, Evelyn Gulledge of Kannapolis, N.C., Juanita Jones of Hartsville, Rachel Martin of Columbia, Lillian Bowlin of Kannapolis, N.C., Ann Smith of Forest, Miss., Joyce Freeman of Society Hill; brother, Thomas Gainey of Society Hill; and five grandchildren. His brothers, Jerry Gainey and Robert Gainey, preceded him in death.

J. RAY DIXON

PATRICK — Funeral services for James Ray Dixon, 55, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at Edwards Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Ed Griggs officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Mr. Dixon died Sunday, April 20, 2003. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of Anna Tyner Dixon and the late Wade H. Dixon. He was a former employee of Mafco Mfg. Co.

Surviving are his daughters, Bridget Dixon of Chesterfield, Shirley Gibson of Patrick; mother of Patrick; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Wade Dixon.

CHARLES R. GAINEY SR.

CHICAGO, Ill. — Memorial and interment services for Charles R. Gainey Sr., 78, born in Hartsville, were held at 1 p.m. on April 7, 2003, at Abraham Lincoln National cemetery in Elwood, Ill.

Mr. Gainey, husband of 55 years to Wilma, nee Galica, died March 29. He was the son of Lowell (Fannie May) . He was a WW II veteran of the U.S. Navy. Mr. Gainey was a dedicated employee of 37 years for the Chicago and North Western Railroad (General Yardmaster) .

Survivors in addition to his wife, are children, Shirley (Tom) Kowalczyk, Michael, Mary, Patricia (Tim) Daniels, and James; friend Robert Geritano; sister Myrtle (Harold) Sprague; brothers Tom (Alva) , Jack (Jean) ; brother–in–law of Joseph Galica; nine grandchildren; six great–grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A son, Charles Ryan Jr., preceded him in death.

Expressions of sympathy by donations may be made to Abraham Lincoln National cemetery, American Cancer Society or American Diabetes Association.

SARAH JOHNSON

Funeral services for Sarah Johnson, 64, were held at 3 p.m. Monday, April 21, 2003, at Centenary United Methodist Church. Burial was in Darlington Memorial Gardens, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Johnson died Thursday, April 17, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Hester McFarland McPhail and the late Horace McPhail Sr. She was a graduate of Butler High school Class of 1956. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, Senior Choir, past president of the United Methodist Women, the Outreach Committee, the Old Timers Club and retired from Sonoco Products Company after 22 years of service.

Surviving other than her mother, Hester McFarland McPhail of Hartsville, are her husband, Willie (Mook) Bernard Johnson of Hartsville; children, Sonia Denise (Charles) Bacote of Florence and LaResa Cortez (Reginald) McNeil of Randallstown, Md., and Elizabeth Johnson (Bernard) Peterson of Springdale, Md.; grandchildren, Shaniqua Cortez McNeil, Reginald Bernerd McNeil of Randallstown, Md.; sisters, Rosena (Charlie) Henderson of Beaufort, N.C., Charlena (Billy) Hunter of Washington, D.C., Betty (Glenn) Brown of Woodlawn, Md., and Annie McPhail of Hartsville; brothers, Horace (Mollie) McPhail Jr. of Lanham, Md., Clarence (Ruby) McPhail of Paterson, N.J., Elijah (Sarah) McPhail of Manhattan, N.Y., and Ervin (Georgia) McPhail of Bridgeport, Conn.; and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Calvin (Gloria) McPhail.

MARGARET J. ISGETT

Funeral services for Margaret Jordan Isgett, 74, widow of Robert W. (Bob) Isgett Sr., were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 20, 2003, at Cedar Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Homer Hinson, Bob Thomas and Ed Griggs officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Isgett died Friday, April 18. She was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Henry Dargan and Minnie Lewis Jordan. She was a member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, Robert W. (Naomi) Isgett Jr. of Hartsville; two daughters, Evelyn (David) Talbert of Patrick and Joyce (Larry) Newman of Camden; three brothers, James Jordan of Hartsville and Henry and J. E. Jordan of Patrick; six grandchildren and six great–grandchildren.

GLENN L. PACE

ROCK HILL — Funeral services for Glenn L. Pace, 41, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 21, 2003, at Beauford Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Williams officiating. Burial was at Beauford cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Pace died Thursday, April 17. Born in Gary, Ind., he was a son of Mrs. Wilma Louise Pittman Pace Jackson and the late Landis Leon Pace.

Surviving are his wife, Christinia Ann Pace of Rock Hill; nephews, Dustin Jay Bradley and Kenneth James Stanley of Charlotte, N.C.; niece, Shannon Louise Stanley of Charlotte, N.C.; step–father and mother, Carl A. and Wilma Louise Jackson of McBee; brother and sister–in–law, Scott Lee (Debbie) Pace of Beaufort, N.C.; sisters and brother–in–law, Juanita (Richard) Geiger of McBee and Karen Lorraine Stanley and Raymond Shaw of Charlotte, N.C.

GLADYS Y. HILL

Funeral services for Gladys Yarborough Hill, 75, were held at 5 p.m. Monday, April 21, 2003, at Hartsville Advent Christian Church with the Rev. Charles McLendon officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Hartsville Advent Christian Church, Box 912, Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Hill, widow of Jessie L. Hill, died Saturday, April 19, 2003. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late George and Daisy Hill Yarborough Sr. She was a member of Hartsville Advent Christian Church and was retired from Nytronics with 30 years of service. She was a devoted mother and grandmother.

Surviving are her sons and daughters–in–law, Terry Lee and Wanda Hill, Ricky M. Hill, all of Hartsville, Chris A. and Paige Hill of Cheraw; daughter and son–in–law, Diane H. and Jimmy Kelly of Hartsville; sisters, Emmie V. Blackie Yarborough and Helen Y. Gilbert, both of Hartsville; brothers, Jerry D. Yarborough, Danny L. Yarborough, Rex E. Yarborough, all of Hartsville; 10 grandchildren; and nine great–grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, George Buddy Yarborough and Billy Yarborough, and sister, Gabrielle Gay Yarborough Dixon.

JOHN L. ANDREWS

Funeral services for John Lennell Andrews, 79, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at Brown Pennington Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Mark Bowers and Scott Brown will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the West Hartsville Baptist Church.

Mr. Andrews died Sunday, April 20, 2003. Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late Harley Ernest and Carnell Andrews Andrews. He was a charter member of West Hartsville Baptist Church and a member of the Jess Stewart Sunday School Class. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was retired from Milliken.

Surviving are his wife, Lillian Lee Andrews of Hartsville; son and daughter–in–law, John L. (Johnny) and Debbie Andrews Jr. of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Jane and Gene Sligh of Hartsville; sister, Faye Fishburne of Sumter; and grandchildren, Thomas Andrews, Sarah Andrews, Jonathan Sligh, and Brandon Sligh. His brother Max Andrews preceded him in death.

HORTENSE DICKINSON

Funeral services for Hortense Sandifer Dickinson, 94, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Surrett officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Wesley United Methodist Church, 145 E. College Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550 or to the charity of one's choice.

Mrs. Dickinson, widow of George M. Dickinson, died Sunday, April 20, 2003. Born in Bamburg, she was a daughter of the late Simeon Wesley and Mattie Kinard Sandifer. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, the Alter Guild, Amity, and Rosa Lee Circle. She was a graduate of Winthrop College and taught at Augusta Circle Elementary School, in Greenville, and also many years at Thornwell Elementary School in Hartsville. She was a former member of Pine and Lake Garden Club, Thursday Study Club, DAR, and UDC.

Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, George Moye and Lynn Dickinson of Fort Mill; daughter and son–in–law, Martha Moye and Chandler Peel; grandchildren, Wesley Peel, Jonathan Peel, Rebecca Dickinson, Thomas Dickinson; and great–grandchildren, Chandler Peel II and Caroline Peel. She was preceded in death by her sister, Martha Davis. Condolences may be expressed to the family at our website

ANN STEWART

Funeral services for Ann Morrison Stewart, 80, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at High Hill True Light Church with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Stewart died Monday, April 21, 2003. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Murray J. and Ethel Hursey Morrison. She was a member of High Hill True Light Church.

Surviving are her husband, Joseph B. Stewart of Hartsville; son and daughter–in–law, T. Dwain and Marcia Watson of Hartsville; sister, Anna Mae Oglesby of Hartsville; brothers, James M. Morrison and Franklin D. Morrison, both of Hartsville; grandchildren, Chip Watson, Emily Watson Peel, Ellen Watson; and great grandson, Spencer D. Watson. She was preceded in death by her first husband, T. Dan Watson.

CARL H. YOUNG

Funeral services for Carl Humbert Young, 62, were held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 21, 2003, at New Hopewell Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Young died Tuesday, April 15, in a Washington, D.C., hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Carl and Robersen Young. He was a graduate of Butler High School. He was drafted into the U.S. Army on April 22, 1966, where he served two years. He retired from National Forest Industries in 1979 and started his own company named Young's Maintenance Service in 1980. He owned a variety of grocery stores including Quickies in Washington, D.C.

Surviving are his wife, Cora Young of Suitland, Md.; four daughters, Marcia Young, Carla Young Turner, Corretta Young and Robersena (Robbie) Williams; two sons, Herbert Young and Jahmol Young; two brothers, Cary B. Young and Herman Young; nine grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

BERTHA MAE GEORGE

LAMAR — Bertha Mae George died Sunday, April 20, 2003, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home of Lamar. The family will receive friends at the residence, 128 McClain St.

GRACIE G. AMERSON

BISHOPVILLE — Funeral services for Gracie Garrett Amerson, 90, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 24, 2003, in the chapel of Norton Funeral Home, Bishopville, with the Revs. Arlin Kirkland and Buddy Amerson officiating. Burial will be in the Wayside Baptist Church cemetery. Visitation will be tonight, Wednesday, April 23, from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Amerson died Monday, April 21. She was born in Lee County, the daughter of the late Tom and Dora Watson Garrett. She was a member of Wayside Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Dorothy Herring of Bishopville and Martha Frank of Sumter; three sons, the Rev. Buddy Amerson and Carroll Amerson of Hartsville and Edward Amerson of Bishopville; 18 grandchildren; 36 great–grandchildren and 12 great–great–grandchildren.

JOHNNIE L. MAYSHACK

Mrs. Johnnie Lee Mayshack died on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at McCoy Memorial Nursing Home of Bishopville, following an illness. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Hines Funeral Home, Inc.

CAROLYN HULSEY

Funeral services for Carolyn Mims Hulsey, 59, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at First Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Alvin Rogers officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hulsey died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Wheeler and Rosa Parnell Mims. She was associated with Nytronics for more than 15 years.

Surviving are her husband, Wilburn Hulsey of Hartsville; daughter, Lori Dixon of Hartsville; son, Charles Marshall III of Hartsville; sister, Louella Crimminger of Kershaw; brothers, Kenneth Lloyd and Ronnie Mims, both of Hartsville; grandchildren, Heather Dixon, Lauren Dixon, Alexis Marshall and Austin Marshall. She was preceded in death by her brother, Charles Mims.

MARGARET T. KOLB

SUMTER — Funeral services for Margaret Della Thorne Kolb, 87, widow of James Mack Son Kolb Jr., were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, at Grace Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. James R. Chandler Jr., and her nephew, the Rev. Dr. Hal L. Salisbury Jr. officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery, directed by Elmore–Hill–McCreight Funeral Home.

Mrs. Kolb died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at a local nursing center. Born in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late Franklin Howard Thorne Sr. and the late T'Litha Vick Thorne.

Mrs. Kolb was a member of Grace Baptist Church for 75 years. She was also a member of the Cuttino/Alderman Sunday School Class, the Jennie Alderman Bible Study Group, and being an avid reader, was a member of Friends of the Library.

Surviving are two daughters, Corinne K. Poston and Linda K. Newman and husband, Terry; a sister, Virginia Snookie T. Montague; eight grandchildren; 12 great–grandchildren; five step–great–grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara K. Lemacks; a son, James Mack Jimmy Kolb III; six sisters, Hilda T. Whisnant, Thelma T. Raymond, Mary T. Chandler, Kate T. Salisbury, Helen T. Brogdon and Mildred T. Hurst; and two brothers, Frank H. Thorne Jr. and Raymond A. Thorne Sr.

Memorials may be made to Grace Baptist Church, 219 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29150, or to Friends of the Library, Sumter County Library, in care of Cathy Gilbert, 111 N. Harvin St., Sumter, SC 29150, or to a charity of one's choice.
