Graveside services for Roy Frank Spiering, 85, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Magnolia cemetery, Hartsville. The Rev. Miller will officiate and Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery. Mr. Spiering, widower of Catherine Davis Spiering, died Friday, July 25, 2003. Born in Minnesota, he was a son of the late Augustine and Jessie Spiering. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and was a loving husband, grandfather and great–grandfather. Surviving are his grandson, Martin C. Biggers of Lancaster, N.C.
FAYE AVANT SEATON
Funeral services for Faye Avant Seaton, 66, were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 28, 2003, at Out Reach for Jesus Church with the Rev. Tommy Brown, officiating, directed by Marks Funeral Home of Rockingham, N.C.
Mrs. Seaton, wife of Phillip E. Seaton, died Thursday, July 24, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. She was born May 15, 1937, in Bennettsville. She was the daughter of the late Luther Steadman and Rachel Poole Steadman. She was a Pentecostal minister.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Steve Avant and Jeff Avant, both of Rockingham, N.C.; a daughter, Sharon Branch of Orange Park, Fla.; one brother, Thomas Steadman of Hartsville; two sisters, Geneva Smith of Hartsville and Betty Lou Bradshaw of Columbia; four grandchildren and two great–grandchildren.
DORIS M. POTTS
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Doris Melton Potts, 81, were held at 3 p.m. Monday, July 28, 2003, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in High Hill cemetery.
Mrs. Potts died at her home Saturday, July 26. She was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late James Lonnie and Maude Gray Melton. She was the widow of Floyd Potts. She was a retired secretary for the County of Darlington and member of High Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
JOSEPH PARLER
Funeral service for Joseph Parler, 81, were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at Jerusalem Baptist Church with the Rev. Isaac Johnson officiating. Burial was in Darlington Memory Gardens cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Parler died Friday, July 25, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Denmark, S.C., a son of the late Ben and Hanna Parler. He was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church and Doric Masons Lodge No. 4 in Bridgeport, Conn.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Swinney Parler of Hartsville; a goddaughter, Tanya E. Shaw of Florence; a godson, Melvin Mebane of Bridgeport, Conn.; a nephew, Harry Johnson of Denmark and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
LINDA STEWART
LAMAR — Funeral services for Linda Weaver Stewart, 58, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at Newman Swamp United Methodist Church with interment following in Newman Swamp cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Stewart died Saturday, July 26, at her home. She was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late Elbert and AnzyLee Watford Weaver. She was a retired librarian for Darlington County and helped at Lamar Flower and Gift Shop. She was a member of Newman Swamp United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her husband, David Buddy Stewart of the home; a daughter and son–in–law, Terri S. and Carroll Warren of Darlington; one grandchild, Tyler S. Warren; two brothers, Elbert Bob E. (Ellen) Weaver and Robin C. (Gail) Weaver, all of Lamar; a special aunt, Ruby (Jim) Huggins of Bishopville; and two nieces and two nephews.
Mrs. Stewart was preceded in death by a brother, Tony M.Weaver.

DWIGHT ANDREWS
LAMAR — Funeral services for Dwight Harry Andrews, 64, were held at 5 p.m Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at Newman Swamp United Methodist Church with interment following in Windhamtown cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Andrews died Saturday, July 26, in a Columbia hospital. He was born in Darlington County, son of the late Harry William and Gertrude Windham Andrews. He was grounds and facilities supervisor at Florence–Darlington Technical College. Mr. Andrews enjoyed fishing and shrimping and helped many people in the Lamar area with their plumbing. He was member of Newman Swamp United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Judy H. Andrews of the home; a son, Doug (Paige) Andrews of Darlington; three daughters, Rita A. (Ernie) Buck of Darlington, Darlene Watford and Lynne (Johnny Smith) Davis, all of Lamar; five grandchildren and three great–grandchildren; also a sister, Desby A. Smith of Lamar.

IDA MAE SAWYER
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Ida Mae Sawyer will be held at 1 p.m. today, July 30, 2003, in New Hope A.M.E. Church with the Rev. Emma S. German, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Darlington Memorial cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mrs. Sawyer died Thursday, July 24, in a Florence hospital after a long illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Hattie Thomas McNeil and step–daughter of the late Rev. John McNeil. She received her formal education in the Darlington County public schools. She was a member of New Hope A.M.E. Church where she was the Mother of the Church, member of the senior choir and was also a member of the V.A. Association. She worked various jobs, and her last employment was with Ramada Inn Restaurant in 1985.
She was married
three times, Mark Bacote, Eddie Pierce and Fletcher Sawyer, all of whom preceded her in death. She helped in the rearing of her grandchildren, great–granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.
Survivors include a daughter, the Rev. Willie Bacote Graham of Darlington; three granddaughters, Hattie (Willie) Smith of Newark, N.J, Cherry (Obaka) Okator of Houston, Texas, and Bobby Kelly of Florence; son–in–law, Samuel E. Kelly Jr. of Darlington; four great–grandchildren; five great–great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Julia Alford of Elizabeth, N. J., and Mrs. Mary Nettles of Darlington; one uncle, Laurie Wilds of Darlington; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
ROBERT H. HEMINGWAY
Robert Harry Hemingway, 78, died Sunday, July 27.
Mr. Hemingway was born in Lawrence, Kan., son of the late Harry and Marcia Baldwin Hemingway.
Surviving are a son, Dennis Robert Hemingway of Barstow, Calif.; and two brothers, Jack Hemingway of Hartsville and Richard Hemingway of Glendora, Calif.
MADGE DAVIS
Graveside services for Madge Thurman Davis, 94, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Friday, July 25, 2003, at Ruby cemetery in Ruby. The Revs. Dr. Aubrey Floyd and Dr. Bob Cline will officiate with Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home in charge.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 104 E. Home Ave., Hartsville SC 29550.
Mrs. Davis, widow of J. Lloyd Davis Sr., died Wednesday, July 23, 2003. Born in Ruby, she was a daughter of the late James Perkins and Mollie Sullivan Thurman. She was a very active member of First Baptist Church where she taught Primary Sunday School for over 40 years.
Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Joe Lloyd and Paula Davis Jr. of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Sybil Davis and Tommy Griggs of Virginia Beach, Va.; sisters and brother–in–law, Gladys Sutton of Florence, Thelma and Douglas Venters of Darlington; brothers and sisters–in–law, David and Margaret Thurman of Ruby, Billy and Evelyn Thurman of Ruby, Mickey and Dot Thurman of Mt. Croghan; sister–in–law, Mildred Thurman of Ruby; grandchildren, Leigh Davis and Ross Hyett of Brevard, N.C., Edward Thomas and Ann Griggs of Virginia Beach, Va., Donna Griggs and Rick Quigg of Virginia Beach, Va.; great–grandchildren, Davis Clarisse Hyett of Brevard, N.C., Evan Ross Hyett of Brevard, N.C., David Lloyd Griggs of Virginia Beach, Va., Kristin Marie Quigg of Virginia Beach, Va. She was preceded in death by her sister, Carrie Thurman, and brothers, Knox Thurman and Johnny Thurman.
MAUISE ELIZABETH DIXON
Mrs. Mauise Elizabeth Dixon, 67, died on Tuesday, July, 22, 2003, at her residence after an illness.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today, Friday, July 25, at Mt Beulah United Methodist Church with the Rev. DeBerry Cook, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. All services are entrusted to the efficiency of Hines Funeral Home, Inc.
Mauise was born on Jan. 8, 1936, a daughter of the late Willie S. and Girlena (Johnson) Nettles. She was educated in the Florence County public schools. After living in Winston Salem, N.C., for a period of time in early life, she returned to South Carolina and was married
to the late Rufus Dixon Sr. in 1957. They moved to the Hartsville community in 1966 and she was employed with the Dr. Pickins Moyd's medical practice as a receptionist for more than 25 years before her retirement.
She was a member of the Mt. Beulah United Methodist church since moving to the community some 35 years ago.
She is survived by one son, Rufus (Belinde) Dixon of Hartsville; one brother, the Rev. James Johnson of Orlando, Fla., three grandsons, four granddaughters and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
VIVIAN P. RODGERS
Funeral services for Vivian Patricia Rodgers, 71, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 26, 2003, in New Hope United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mrs. Rodgers died Tuesday, July 22, in Morrell Memorial Nursing Center. She was born in Chesne, a daughter of the late James Berly and Laura Harris Marshall. She was married
to the late Joe Louis Rodgers. She was educated in the public schools of South Carolina and attended Sumter Beautician School. She was employed with Bellenue Hospital for 30 years. She was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church and attended Providence Baptist Church in New York City.
Surviving are her son, Winnor Marshall of Hartsville; daughter–in–law, Margie Marshall of Hartsville; a sister, Lillian Stewart of Hartsville; brothers, Marion Marshall of Bronx, N.Y., George (Pearlie) Marshall of Hartsville; foster sisters and brothers, Ernestine Arnold and Mildred Wyatt, Claudell Arnold and Elijah Arnold, all of Hartsville, and Louvenia Mack of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren and great–grandchildren; and other close relatives and friends.
FREDERICK E. GIBSON
STRATFORD, Conn. — Frederick E. Gibson, formerly of Darlington County, died Wednesday, July 23, 2003, in Bridgeport, Conn., after a brief illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home.
ALMA HESS
Funeral services for Alma Hall Hess, 70, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at Pine Ridge Church of God of Prophecy with the Rev. Marvin Griggs officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Pine Ridge Church of God of Prophecy.
Mrs. Hess died Saturday, July 19, 2003. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Silas and Rosa Lee Odom Hall. She was retired from Hartsville Manufacturing.
Surviving are her sons, Richard Odom of Kannapolis, N.C., Michael Odom and Cleve Odom, both of Hartsville.; daughters, Joyce Darnell, Dorothy Dixon, Cristal Beasley, all of Hartsville; sisters, Jeanette Moore, Clara Powe, Leola Tyner, all of Hartsville, Betty Steen of Orangeburg; brothers, Byerly Hall of Hartsville, Melvin Hall of China Grove, N.C., J. D. Hall of Rockwell, N.C., Silas Hall of Hartsville, George Thomas Hall of Hartsville, Tillman Hall of Lydia; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great–grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her ex–husbands, Allen Odom and Bobby Hess; sons, Stanley Odom, Leon Odom, Randy Odom, Ronnie Odom; daughter, Connie Odom; brothers, Willis Hall, Walter Hall, and Lonnie Hall; sisters, Nancy Hall, Dorothy Hall, and Helen Poston.
MARY ELLA GIBSON
Funeral services for Mary Ella Brand Gibson, 89, were held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, July 19, 2003, at the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Bob Cline officiated with burial in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Gibson, widow of Edwin L. Gibson, died Thursday, July 17. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Jesse D. and Janie Ellis Brand. She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Surviving are her sons, Edwin L. Gibson of Lancaster, Jesse D. Gibson of Hartsville; daughter, Mary Helen Joyner of Hartsville; sisters, Vivian Graham of Lancaster, Mabel Small of Heath Springs, Genoese Quetel of Gastonia, N.C., Eunice Parker of Gastonia, N.C.; brother, Robert M. Brand of Charlotte, N.C.; nine grandchildren; 20 great–grandchildren; one great–great–grandchild.
BERTLY HUGGINS
COLUMBIA — Funeral services for Mr. Bertly Huggins, 83, were held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 21, at Sandy Bluff United Methodist Church of Bishopville, the Rev. Raymond F. Cook Jr., pastor. Burial was in the church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home of Hartsville.
Mr. Huggins died on Thursday, July 17, at the Providence Hospital of Columbia. He was born in the Lamar community of Lee county, a son of the late Annie Gunter. He was educated in the public schools. He met and married
the late Mary Montgomery Huggins who passed away in 1995. This living union was blessed with 11 children, 10 of whom survive him. He worked as a farmer in the rural Lee county area during his formative years. As a young adult, he and his family moved to Columbia where worked as a butcher with the Shell Sausage Company for more than 20 years before his retirement in 1980.
Bertly was raised in a Christian home and continued to live the life that he was taught by his parents as he raised his family. He was a lifetime member of the Sandy Bluff United Methodist Church.
He is survived by nine sons, James (Mary) Huggins of Lamar, Willie Huggins, Bertly (Vivian) Huggins Jr., Robert Huggins, Bobby (Sandra) Huggins, and Gene (Loretta) Huggins all of Columbia. James (Pearl) Huggins of Irmo, Elvin (Martha) Huggins of Baltimore, Md., Roosevelt Huggins of Hampton, Va.; one daughter, Minnie (Charles) Geiger of Columbia; 26 grandchildren; 34 great–grandchildren; and 20 great–great grandchildren.
