IRMO — Funeral services for Julius Roy Richardson, 81, were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 22, 2003, in St. Matthew's Episcopal Church with interment at 3:30 p.m. in St. John's Lutheran Church cemetery in Irmo, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Richardson died Friday, July 18. He was born in Irmo, son of the late Julius Perry and Julia Anna Richardson. He graduated from Irmo High School in 1938 and graduated from Wofford College in 1942. He went to work for U.S. Steel in Pittsburgh, Pa. In 1943, he married
Dorothy Segelhorst of Pittsburgh. In 1944 he was commissioned as an ensign in the U.S. Navy whereby he was oriented at Princeton and studied the Russian language at the University of Colorado. He furthered his military training at the Intelligence School in New York. Upon completion of his training he was posted in Petropavlovsk, Siberia, as a meteorologist, with the primary objective of monitoring Soviet military activities in the area during World War II. After this tour of duty he was released to inactive duty in Washington, D.C., as a civilian in the communications center. From there he began work and study in metallurgical research at Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pa. At the Navy's request he returned to Washington as a civilian in the communications center. In 1952 he was transferred to the Central Intelligence Agency and the Secret Service. In 1966 he resigned from the CIA and accepted a position as a senior consultant with Scientific Methods, Inc., an international managerial consulting firm headquartered in Austin, Texas. His consulting work carried him around the world with a vast and varied clientele, including but not limited to, British Aerospace, Johnson & Johnson, Botosh, Gulf Oil, Avis Rental Car, Marriott Corp., and the Federal Aviation Agency. In 1976 the family moved from Kensington, Md., to Darlington, where he restored the Old Judge Dennis House. Upon his retirement from Scientific Methods in 1991, he went to work as an independent consultant working with the local/regional clientele. He also was the founder and part owner of two construction companies, a rental properties corporation and was involved in numerous other business ventures that he so enjoyed. He was an active member in St. Matthews Episcopal Church.
He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years. He has five children, Jeffrey (Patricia) Richardson of Nashotah, Wis., John (Debbie) Richardson of Spartanburg, Thomas (Kam) Richard of Florence, Geneva (Steve) Cromer of Myrtle Beach and Phoebe (Bill) Seals of Marion; grandchildren, Julius Richardson II, Meg Richardson, Thalia Richardson, Clay Cromer, Carlyle Cromer, Roy Cromer, Jack Cromer, Katie Richardson, Boyd Richardson, William Seals III, Tasha McCutcheon and Chelsea Gartman.

WINNOR MARSHALL
Funeral services for Winnor Maurice (Noze) Marshall, 23, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, July 23, 2003, in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Marshall died Friday, July 18, in Bishopville. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Winnor and Margie Jackson Marshall. He was educated in the public schools of Darlington County and received his Christian education during his childhood at the Sixth Street Church of God.
Surviving other than his father and mother of Hartsville are three siblings, Jacobia Jackson of Florence, Nickie Marshall and April Marshall, both of Hartsville; a niece, Kierra Marshall; two nephews, Keyon and Keyvonta Marshall, all of Hartsville; his grandparents, Girlena Jackson and Vivian Rogers, also of Hartsville.
RICHARD JOHNSON
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for William Richard Johnson, 85, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at Darlington Presbyterian Church with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Johnson died Monday, July 21, at his home. He was born in Florence County, son of the late William R. and Flossie Campbell Johnson. After graduating from Florence High School, he was employed with Atlantic Coastline Railroad until 1948. He then moved to Darlington where he was a local merchant for many years. He was a Mason, Shriner, member of Darlington Kiwanis Club and past member of the Pee Dee Senior's Golf Association and the Tri–country Seniors' Golf Association. He worked with the election commission for Darlington County for many years. Mr. Johnson was a member of Darlington Presbyterian Church, where he was a past deacon and after his retirement was assistant treasurer until 2003.
Surviving is his wife, Dorothy (Dot) C. Johnson of the home.
Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan M. Johnson, and sister, Billie J. DuBose.

HOWARD TUNSTALL
DARLINGTON — Graveside funeral services for Howard Tunstall, 72, were held at Union Memorial Gardens in Union, directed by Belk Funeral Home of Darlington.
Mr. Tunstall died Sunday, July 20, 2003, in a Florence hospital. He was born in Darlington County, son of the late Nathan Dozier and Irene Cowick Tunstall. He was a graduate of St. John's High School and the University of South Carolina, where he was an outstanding baseball player. He served his country in the United States Army for two years. He had lived in Columbia for many years and retired from Carolina Bonding Company.
Surviving are his brother and sister–in–law, Don and Margaret Tunstall of Darlington, and a special niece, Gayle Mattox, also of Darlington.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jackie Holt Tunstall; brothers, Heyward Tunstall and N. C. Tunstall and sisters, Margaret Tunstall, Geraldine Tunstall and Kathleen Mattox.

WILLIE SAMUEL
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Mr. Willie David Samuel of Darlington were held Saturday, July 19, 2003, at Shiloh United Methodist Church. Reverend W. S. James, pastor officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home, Inc.
Mr. Samuel, 60, died Sunday, July 13, 2003, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County the 12th child of 14 children to the late Matthew and Ethel Lee Mack Samuel.
He received his formal education in Spaulding High School in Lamar. He lived in New York for many years and was employed as a cook and an industrial worker. He was married
to Margie Coe Samuel. A son Gerome Samuel, preceded him in death.
He returned to Darlington County about 10 years ago and was employed by Young's Pecan Company.
Survivors include: his wife of Bronx, N.Y.; four children, Lazette Samuel, Tammy Samuel, Kim Samuel and Reggie Samuel, all of Bronx, N.Y.; his siblings, Roberta Williams, Willie Mae James, Jackie Graham, and Celestine Samuel all of Baltimore, Md., and Rosena Samuel of Darlington; four family members who were like brothers to him: Bernice Bristow, Ernest Lee Samuel, Steven Samuel and Levern Samuel; grandchildren; nieces; nephews and cousins.
The family is receiving friends at the home of a sister, Rosena Samuel of 1672 Syracuse Community Road, Darlington.
WILLENE B. WALTERS
McBEE — Funeral services for Willen Blackwell Walters, 73, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 21, 2003, from the Grace Baptist Church with the Revs. Johnny Tadlock and Glenn S. White officiating. Burial was in Bethel cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville Chapel.
Mrs. Walters died Saturday, July 19. She was born in Kershaw County, a daughter of the late Loriman B. and Viola Barnes Blackwell. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Alice Catoe, Patricia Carter, and Phillis Johnson, all of Hartsville; four sons, Melvin Walters of Blenheim, James Willard Walters of Rutherfordton, N.C., Paul E. Walters of Pageland and Roger Walters of McBee; a sister, Louise Mosley of Kershaw; 19 grandchildren and 22 great–grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leavie James Walters and a son, Thomas Wayne Walters.

RAY SMITH
Funeral services for George Ray Smith, 83, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeri Parris Perkins officiating. Burial followed in Westview Memorial Park cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Smith died Saturday, July 19. Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late William Henry and Annie Kelly Smith. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was a former deacon and treasurer. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the American Legion. He was a retired farm manager, a member of the American Camellia Society, and was an avid gardener, hunter and fisherman.
Surviving are his wife, Beulah Barrineau Smith of Hartsville; sons and daughter–in–law, George Smith of Hartsville, Bill and Hart Smith of Florence; daughters and sons–in–law, Betty and Kevin McGreevey of Pelham, Ala., Nancy and Johnny Flowers of Charlotte, N.C.; sisters, Beulah Mahoney of Manning, Garnet Thompson of Alcolu; brother, T. Harvey Smith of Wilmington, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and three great–grandchildren.

Funeral services for Eric Anthony Hewling, 42, will be held at 11 a.m Thursday, July 24, 2003, at Gum Branch Baptist Church. The Rev. Mr. Hewling, widower of Sadra Hancock Hewling, died Sunday, July 20. Born in Kansas City, Mo., he was a son of Phyllis Hale Holland and the late Glenn Holland. He was a member of Gum Branch Baptist Church, the Wild Turkey Federation, Hartsville Moose Lodge No. 1770 and was the owner and operator of Computer Solutions of Hartsville.
Surviving are his son, Corey C. Hewling of Hartsville; mother of Hartsville; brother, Fred Hewling of Monroe, N.C.

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Ruth LaMontte Ward, 90, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 24, 2003, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery.
Mrs. Ward, widow of the late Malcolm Booth Ward, died Saturday, July 19, at the Harborside Nursing Home in Ohio. She was born in Bennettsville, the daughter of the late Enos Orville and Ruth McLaurin LaMotte. Mrs. Ward retired from the News and Press after more than 40 years of employment. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was an active member of Trinity's Ethel Williamson Circle.
Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Bennie and Carol Hughes Ward of Sylvania, Ohio; daughter and son–in–law, Joan Ward and Frank Malcolm Stokes of Darlington; grandchildren, Virginia Ruth Ward of Sylvania, Ohio, James Walter Ward of Auburn Hills, Mich., Jonathan LaMotte (Tina) Ward of Toledo, Ohio, Michael Booth (Norma) Stokes of Woodruff and George Daniel Stokes of Darlington; great–grandchildren, Michelle Stokes Malone and Jared Stokes of Woodruff and Joshua and Jessica Stokes of Darlington; and her great–great–grandchild, Cameron Michael Malone of Woodruff.

Mrs. Green died Tuesday, July 15, 2003. Born in Bishopville, she was a daughter of the late Elbert and Gladys Clanton Dalrymple.

Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Clarence H. and Nannie Mozingo Jordan Sr. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Dorcas Sunday School class, Golden Fellowship, Baptist Women, and Homebound Visitors. She was retired from J. L. Coker & Co.
Surviving are her son, Frank Sowell of Camden; daughters and sons–in–law, Ann and Woody Woodruff of Murrells Inlet, Patsy and Chip Auman of Hartsville; sister, Euphala Kirven of Bowman; brother and sisters–in–law, Howard and Frances Jordan, Virginia Jordan, all of Hartsville; 11 grandchildren; and nine great–grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Clarence Jordan and Richard Jordan, and her sister, Attis Melton.
