Emma L. Simpson
Union native

FRAZER, Pa. Emma Lee Simpson, 62, of Lancaster Avenue, died Friday, May 16, 2003, in Main Line Nursing Home, Paoli, Pa. A daughter of the late John Simpson and Emma (Chisolm) Simpson, she was born in Union July 31, 1940.

She lived in the East Whiteland Township area for 35 years. A graduate of Sims High School in Union, she was a member of Corinth Baptist Church in Union and had attended churches in Malvern and Phoenixville. She employed in the housekeeping department of the Desmond Hotel in Great Valley, Pa.

Surviving are two sons, Terry and Lolda Simpson of Spring City, Pa., and Luther and Tonya Simpson of Philadelphia; two daughters, Ada, wife of Andy Coleman of East Hartford, Conn., and Sara, wife of Tony Smith of Kennett Square, Pa.; three sisters, Mrs., Johnnie Mae Thomas of Detroit, Rebecca, wife of Leroy Land of Union, Sarah Carter of Malvern, Pa.; 12 grandchildren and many special nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at Bethel Baptist Church, 421 Fairview St., Phoenixville, Pa. conducted by the Rev. Gregory Thornton. Burial will be in Morris Cemetery, Phoenixville, Pa.

Visitation will be at the church Wednesday morning from 10 until 11. The Devlin-Rosmos-Kepp Funeral Home Inc., Main Street at Fourth Avenue, Phoenixville, Pa., has charge of arrangements.

Charles L. Estes Sr.

Charles LeRoy Estes Sr., 69, husband of Rebecca Pierce Estes of 107 Partridge Road, Union, died Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at 5:07 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. The family is at the home, 107 Partridge Road. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

J. Virgil Morris
Retired SLED agent

James Virgil Morris, 82, husband of Doris Knox Morris of 111 Hillcrest Drive, died at his residence Monday, May 17, 2004, at 3:50 p.m. after an extended illness. Mr. Morris was born in Union on July 27, 1921, a son of the late James Thomas Morris and Thaddie Horne Morris. He was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon, was founder and president of the Senior Adult Group of the church, and was a member of the Earl Fowler Sunday School Class. he was a graduate of Union high School where he played football and baseball.

Following high school, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Morris retired from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) where he worked for 37 years and achieved the rank of lieutenant. He was active in the Law Enforcement Community Affairs, servicing as a member of the S.C. Law Enforcement Officers Association, a member of the American Legion Post 22 where he served as past Post Commander and Area Commander. He was a former president and member of the Union Lion Clubs, a member of the John A. Fant Masonic Lodge and the Hejaz Shrine Temple. He was a member of the South Carolina National Guard's Union unit for 17 years.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son and his friend, Jimmy Morris and Lori Whiteside of Myrtle Beach; a son-in-law, John Middlebrook of Lexington; a granddaughter and her husband, Leslie M. and Terry Shealy of Lexington; three grandsons, David Middlebrook and his finance, Robin Phillips, of Lexington, Andy Morris and his friend, Heather Conners, of Myrtle Beach and Mathew Morris of Myrtle Beach; a great-granddaughter, Cheyanne Lawson of Union; three sisters, Ruth McGowan of Kingston, N.Y. Annie Mae Bradley of Rock Hill and Lib and her husband, Al Smith of Union; a brother, Billy and his wife Sylvia Morris of Clarksville, Ga.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Morris was predeceased by a daughter, Karen M. Middlebrook; two brothers, Clarence W. Morris and Carl Morris and a sister, Mary Morris. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Benny Green and Mr. Charley Hughes. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery with military rites.

Active pallbearers will be Bobby Hill, Eddie Mayo, Mark Wade, Robbie Hendricks, Carrol Alexander, Ricky Harris, Joe Smith and Terry Wade. The following are asked to assemble at the church Thursday at 10:45 a.m. to form the honorary escort: All active and retired SLED agents, active and retired S.C. Highway Patrol members, all active and retired Union County law enforcement officers; members of the Earl Fowler Sunday School Class, deacons of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church; Don Cody, Billy Medford, Paul Greer Sr., Paul Greer II. and Jim Smith.

Members of the Hardee's Bunch are asked to sit in a group. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8 and will be placed in church at 10 a.m. Thursday to await the hour of service. Memorials may be made to the Mon-Aetna Baptist Church, 1431 Lockhart Highway, Union, S.C. 29379 or to Hospice Care of S.C., 128-C Medical Science Drive, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Carlin Cornwell

CHESTER Funeral services for Carlin Cornelius (Ned) Cornwell, 26, of Charlotte will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church in Chester. Mr. Cornwell died May 18, 2003 in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Among the survivors are three brothers, Jonathan Trevelle Hardy, Orlando Salter, and Mandarian Smith, all of Union; a sister, Aryahn Cohen of Union; and a paternal grandfather, Jessie Hardy Sr. of Union. King's Funeral Home of Chester has charge of arrangements.

Barbara W. Deaton
Union native

Barbara Etta Whitmire Deaton, 66, widow of Willie Deaton Jr., of 221 E. Main St., died Monday, May 19, 2003, at Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness. Mrs. Deaton was born in Union on Nov. 25, 1936, a daughter of the late Johnny Whitmire and Bertha Nichols Whitmire Jolly. She attended Union High School and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are four daughters, Bonnie D. Thompson of Spartanburg, April D. Kirby and her husband Michael; Debbie D. Harmon and Holly D. Jones, all of Union; two sons, Timmy Wayne Deaton of Union and Jason Simeon Deaton and wife, Jolly, of Spartanburg; a brother, George Robert (Bobby) Whitmire of Union; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Randy Smith. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7 until 9.

The family is at the home of her daughter, April and Michael Kirby, 112 Pineland Road. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Haskell R. Franklin
EMMD retiree

Haskell Robert Franklin, 92, widower of Edith Boulware Franklin, of 819 Flat Drive, died Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness. Mr. Franklin was born in Buffalo, June 28, 1910, a son of the late Bob and Bessie Coleman Franklin. He was retired from EMMD and a member of Buffalo Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Elsie and Jack Ray of the home; two sisters, Gaynelle Trantham of Union and Ethel Penniington of Clinton; two grandchildren, Melanie Ray of Union and Steve Ray of Pacolet; four great-grandchildren, Heather Bobo, Nick Bevis, Will Ray and Jesse Ray; and a great-great-grandchild, Chase Bevis. The family is at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Ray, 819 Flat Drive, Buffalo.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Virginia M. Gossett
Spartanburg County native

Virginia Mae (Murp) Gossett, 89, wife of Herbert Gossett of 447 New Hope Church Road, Jonesville, died Sunday morning, May 18, 2003, at her residence after an extended illness. Mrs. Gossett was born in Spartanburg County on Feb. 7, 1914, a daughter of the late William Loyd Murph and Ellie Spake Murph.

She was a faithful member of the New Hope United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Ladies Sunday School Class, the United Methodist Women's Circle and had served on the new Hope United Methodist Church Administrative Board. A Christian lady, Mrs. Gossett has left a legacy of faithfulness to Christ, to her church, her husband of 70 years, her children and grandchildren.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters and sons-in-law, Dora and Charles Blackwell of Jonesville and Bobbie Jean and Harold D. Lawson of Union; a son and daughter-in-law, Albert and Meredith Gossett of Greenville; two sisters, Dora (Ada) Murph Fleming of Spartanburg and Mary Murph Watson of Boiling Springs; five grandchildren, Beth Hood of Jonesville, Chris Gossett of Johnston, Mark Blackwell of Jonesville, Audra Hammond of Greenville and Tiffany Matthews of Cumming, Ga.; seven great-grandchildren, Douglas Matthews of Cumming, Ga., Britt Gossett and Reid Gossett of Johnston, Matthew Hood, Charles Bryson Hood, Hunter Blackwell and Hagan Blackwell, all of Jonesville.

Mrs. Gossett was predeceased by two sisters and three brothers, Dorothy Murph, Ella Threadgill, Robert L. Murph, Paul Murph and William Murph. Funeral services will be held today at 3 p.m. in New Hope United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Scott Gilmer, the Rev. Ralph Brown and Chaplain Gary A. Pindroh. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Harold Murph, Dennis Threadgill, Mark Blackwell, Chris Gossett, Scot Hood and Joe Matthews.

The following are asked to assemble at the church today at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Mrs. Gossett's nephews, members of the Ladies Sunday School Class, members of the United Methodist Women's Circle, Randy and Linda Medford, Warren Little, Harry Ray Taylor, Harold Youngblood, William (Bill) Black, employees of Interim Hospice, Buddy Peay, Daniel Groves, James Haile, Claude Bobo, B. F. Ledford, Harold and Carol Cookson, the Rev. Jerry Lawson, Annie Bell Wilson, Charles Warner, May Pelham the Rev. Jesse Ham, Grady Blackwell, Tommy Benfield, Pearl Crocker, Gladys (Doodle) Sims, Marlene Ethridge, Mike Floyd and Dr. James Brown.

The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Monday night was will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. today to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 447 New Hope Church Road. Memorials may be made to Interim Hospice, 775 Spartan Blvd., Suite 101, Spartanburg, 29301 or to New Hope United Methodist Church, c/o Florence R. Ronnie M. Haney
Union native

Ronnie Mack Haney, 52, of 306 Osborne St., husband of Deborah (Debbie) Eubanks Haney, died Sunday, May 18, 2003, at 2:42 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Mr. Haney was born in Union on June 6, 1950, a son of Mrs. Sallie Bledsoe Haney of Union and the late Herman Haney. He was a Baptist.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are a son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Tonya Haney of Gray Court; three sisters, Margaret Swanson and Doris Dover, both of Union and Diane Panther of Cross Anchor; two brothers, Larry Haney and Dean Haney, both of Union. Mr. Haney was predeceased by a sister and brother, Nell H. Billings and Kenneth Haney.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Johnny Burgess. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Gerald Billings, Mark Billings, Tommy Haney, Jeff Haney, Donald Dover Jr. and Mike McGowan.

The following are asked to assemble at the funeral chapel Wednesday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Michael Brewington, Mark Johnson, Dennis Johnson, David Boulware, Bobby Boulware, Jerry Boulware, Gerald Goins, Larry Goins, Tommy Brewington, Steve Sumner, Ronnie Joe Groves, Jesse Willard, Ricky Malpass, Mack Malpass, Joey Parks and Ricky Foster.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight night from 7 until 9. The family is at the home, 306 Osborne St. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

CINCINNATI, Ohio Curtis Robinson of Cincinnati died Saturday, May 17, 2003. Local arrangements will be announced later by the Union Community Funeral Home.
