MYRTLE IVEY REYNOLDS

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Myrtle Ivey Reynolds will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at St. James United Methodist Church with the Rev. Anna Miller, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Ivey cemetery in Clio, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.

Mrs. Reynolds, widow of Calvin C. Reynolds Jr., died Thursday, July 10, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born in Marlboro County, a daughter of the late Walter and Abbigale McCall Ivey and step–daughter of the late Alzada Bullard Ivey.

She was a graduate of Laurinburg Normal and Industrial Institute, Laurinburg, N.C., class of 1931. She continued her education at SC State College where she earned her bachelor of science degree in 1937. She joined the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She taught elementary education in various school systems.

At an early age, she joined Ivey's Chapel Baptist Church in Clio. After marriage, she joined St. James United Methodist Church and was a member of the United Methodist Women and the adult Sunday School Class.

Survivors left to cherish her memory are daughters, M. L. Annette Reynolds (Dallas Charles II) of N. Charleston, Julia Reynolds (Orlando L.) Brown Sr. of St. Stephen; son, Calvin C. (Azawami) Reynolds III of Darlington; grandchildren, Tyronne Reynolds (Tandi R.) Gilmore Sr. of Greenville, Keysha Reynolds of Summerville, Orlando L. Brown Jr. of St. Stephen; great–grandchildren, Daron A. Gilmore of Pensacola, Fla., Connie R. Dyches, Courtney T. Gilmore, Tyronne Reynolds Gilmore Jr. and Tyreese Franklin Gilmore, all of Greenville; sisters, Landers I. Quick of Bennettsville and Margaret Louise Douglas of Laurinburg; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

THYRA G. JERNIGAN

DARLINGTON — Graveside services for Thyra G. Jernigan, 89, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 12, 2003, in Darlington Memory Gardens conducted by the Rev. Timothy Coker and directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington.

Mrs. Jernigan died Wednesday, July 9, in a local nursing home after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, the daughter of the late Timothy Lee and Gertie Howell Gainey. Mrs. Jernigan worked for Young's Pecan for many years and was a member of Central Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Harmon L. (Pat) Jernigan and Jack (Sherry) Jernigan; one daughter, Patsy (Cecil) Weaver, all of Darlington; seven grandchildren and 10 great–grandchildren.

Mrs. Jernigan was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Q. Jernigan, and her brother, James M. Gainey.

The family suggests memorials be made to Central Baptist Church, 512 Spring St., Darlington, SC 29532 or to McLeod Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E.Cheves St., Florence, SC 29501.

JAMES P. TINSLEY

FLORENCE — James Phillips Tinsley, 68, died Thursday, July 10, 2003. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

SHIRLEY JEAN SHOEMAKE

PATRICK — Funeral services for Shirley Jean Gainey Shoemake, 62, were held at 3 p.m. on Friday, July 11, 2003, at St. John Freewill Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery, directed by Miller–Rivers–Caulder Funeral Home of Chesterfield.

Mrs. Shoemake died Wednesday, July 9. She was born in Bethune, a daughter of William Preston Gainey and the late Ethel Rebecca Douglas Gainey. She was a member of St. John Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Edward Shoemake of the home; father, William Preston Gainey of Patrick; one son, Dean (Ginger) Shoemake of Hartsville; two daughters, Tammy H. (Ernest) Roscoe of Patrick and Deneene H. (Steven) Rivers of McBee; two step–daughters, Brenda Winburn of Patrick and Tina Smith of Hartsville; one brother, William P. Gainey Jr. of Chesterfield; three sisters, Mazel G. West of Cheraw, Alodia F. Gainey and Becky G.Holliday, both of Patrick; grandchildren, Ricky, Brooke, Erica, Bobby and Becca and great–grandchild, Trenton.

MITCHELL HICKS

Funeral services for Mitchell Hicks, 45, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 13, 2003, at Green Hill Church of God, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mr. Hicks was born in Darlington County, a son of Cecile Quick Boykin and the late Gene Hicks.

Surviving are his mother of Hartsville; wife, Sandra W. Hicks of Hartsville; children, Miranda Stewart, Dale, Grace, Gene Jr., Carol Ann, Michelle, Michael Paul and Vince Hicks; brother, William C. Hicks Sr.; step–brother, Marty Boykin; and two sisters, Renee Grantham and Maggie Downey.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Joan Wilson.

ELEANOR C. BOONE

SUMTER — Funeral services for Eleanor Curtis Boone, 72, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 13, 2003, at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Stephen Taylor officiating. Burial was held at 5:30 p.m. in the New Hope cemetery in Rowesville, S.C., directed by Elmore–Hill–McCreight Funeral Home of Sumter.

Mrs. Boone, wife of Theodore E. Ted Boone Jr., died Thursday, July 10, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the FaHoLo Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Sumter Art Association and the Poinsett Garden Club. She was a former officer of the United Methodist Women and a former board member of the Salvation Army. She was a volunteer for Sumter Habitat for Humanity.

Surviving are her husband of Sumter; five sons, Dr. James Hoyt Rogers Jr. of Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic, Dr. Richard Curtis Rogers (Debbie) of Greenville, Theodore E. Trey Boone III of Columbia; James Alan (Cathy) Boone of Columbia, Robert George Boone of Columbia; two daughters, Cathy Boone (Karl) Weeks of Columbia and Capt. Debbie Rogers Fisette of Sumter; a brother, Horace Brogdon Curtis Jr. of Sumter; two sisters, Margie Curtis Ward of Sumter and Jane Curtis Ward of Hampton, Va.; seven grandchildren, Matthew Curtis Rogers, James Edward Lambert, Amanda Kathryn Rogers, Jennifer Leigh Boone, James Adam Rogers, Sarah Elizabeth Boone and Virginia Brook Boone.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Kathryn Page Rogers and Irene Kolb Rogers.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the FaHoLo Sunday School Class.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

MOSES SMITH SR.

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Moses Smith Sr., 78, were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 10, 2003, in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial was in New Hopewell Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Smith died Sunday, July 6. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Beasie and Williame Smith. He received his education in the public schools of Darlington County, and was employed with the Hartsville Oil Mill for many years.

Surviving are three daughters, Mildred Jackson of Society Hill, Henretta (Wallace) George of Baltimore, Md., and Precilla (Louree) Lee of New York City, N.Y.; four sons, Moses Smith Jr. and Sammy (Mary) Smith, both of Baltimore, Md., James Levern (Corinthians) Smith of Darlington and Albert Smith of New York City, N.Y.; a step–daughter, Tabitha Love of Dovesville; 24 grandchildren; several great–grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

NELLWYN S. DUNN

DARLINGTON — Graveside funeral services for Nellwyn Nell Smith Dunn, 72, were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2003, in Indian Branch cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Timothy Coker and directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Dunn died Monday, July 7, at her residence. She was born in Dillon, a daughter of the late William H. and Laura Marlowe Smith and was married to the late Everett L. Dunn Sr. Mrs. Dunn was a retired seamstress and worked for Sherman Manufacturing for 30 years. She also enjoyed watching sports.

Surviving is one son, Everett Woody Dunn Jr. of Darlington; one daughter and son–in–law, Laura D. (Freddie) Weatherford of Darlington; two sisters, Faye Godbold of Sumter and Myrl (Pete) Howle of Killean, Texas. Mrs. Dunn was preceded in death by a brother, William Smith.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.

DOROTHY K. SOWELL

Funeral services for Dorothy King Sowell, 95, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 12, 2003, at the chapel of Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home with the Rev. John C. Smith officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight, Friday, from 5–7 at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, BTC–009, 181 East Evans Street, Suite 206, Florence, SC 29506–5502.

Mrs. Sowell, widow of Charles Sowell, died Wednesday, July 9. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Hoyt and Alice McCoy King. She was a member of John Wesley Methodist Church. She retired from Sonoco Products Company after 29 years of service. She was a member of the Old Timers Club.

Surviving are her son, Nick H. Grantham of Hartsville; daughter, Mary G. Johnson of Myrtle Beach; sister, Francis K. Kelley of Hartsville; 11 grandchildren; four great–grandchildren and two great–great grandchildren.

TAMMIE SOLOMON

LAMAR — Mrs. Tammie Solomon died on Wednesday, July 9, in a Florence hospital after an illness. The family will receive friends at the residence, at 1205 Fig Tree Lane, Lamar. Hines Funeral Home of Lamar is in charge of all arrangements.

RUBY HAWKINS

Funeral services for Ruby Gardner Hawkins, 87, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Friday, July 11, 2003, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Charles Roberts will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 104 East Home Ave., Hartsville SC 29550.

Mrs. Hawkins died Tuesday, July 8, 2003. Born in Kershaw County, she was a daughter of the late George Bennett and Lula Blackwell Gardner. She was a member of First Baptist Church, attended Carolina College of Commerce, a member of the Woodmen of the World, and was a past state president, past senior regent and member of Women of the Moose. She was married for 68 years.

Surviving are her husband, W. W. Bill Hawkins Sr. of Hartsville; son and daughter–in–law, Gerald Tommy and Phyllis Hawkins of Norwell, Mass.; four grandchildren; and six great–grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, the Rev. Woodrow W. Billy Hawkins Jr.

RUTH DICKEY

Funeral services for Ruth Dickey, 75, were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, 2003, at Kay Branch Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Dickey died Thursday, June 26, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, N.C., after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Flemen (Clem) and Alice Jett Stevenson. She received her education in the public schools of Darlington County. She was a member of Household of Faith Holiness Church.

Surviving are her children, minister Sandra H. Pendergrass, James H. Dickey, esq., Luther M. Dickey, Dr. David A. Dickey, Charles (Cynthia) Dickey and Hattie D. Samuel; a sister, Lillie Mae Isaac; goddaughters, Montez R. Mitchell and Ruth D. Fair; grandchildren, great–grandchildren, great–great–grandchildren, sisters–in–law and other close relatives and friends.

MOSES SMITH

Moses Smith, 78, died Sunday, July 6, 2003. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

WILLIE MAE JOHNSON

Funeral services for Willie Mae Johnson, 78, were held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 7, 2003, in the Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Johnson died Thursday, July 3, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Press and Hester James Johnson.

She received her education in the public schools of Darlington County. She was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church, and after moving to New York City she joined Macadeonia Baptist Church where she was a member of the Usher Board and Gospel Choir. She was employed with Leather Stripping House for Shoes and was retired from the Port of New York Authority World Trade Center.

Surviving are her brother, Ramon Johnson of Florence; a close niece, Delphine Fountain of Hartsville and a special grand–niece, Herbert and Joanne Grant of Hartsville; a host of other nieces, nephews, close relatives and friends.

GLADYS K. THOMPSON

CASSATT — Funeral services for Gladys Brown King Thompson, 72, were held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, 2003, in Beaverdam Baptist Church with burial in Bethune Baptist Church cemetery with the Revs. Donnie Barrett, Robbie Shivar and Donnie Dixon officiating, directed by Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Mrs. Thompson, widow of Luke Benjamin Thompson Jr., died Thursday, July 3. Born in Patrick, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Myrtle Crowley Brown. She was retired from Soconey Textiles and attended House of Prayer and Bible Faith Tabernacle.

Surviving are daughters and son–in–law, Bonnie King of the home, Patricia Thompson Huskins and Robert of Camden, Faye Hall and Jerry of Cassatt; eight grandchildren; and seven great–grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Cecil L. King.
