DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Edith Jernigan Anderson, 93, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 23, 2003, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home officiated by the Rev. James Crooks, with interment following in Pisgah Methodist Church cemetery.
Mrs. Anderson died Saturday, June 21, in a local nursing home. She was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late Spencer Jerome and Carrie Atkinson Jernigan. She was a member of High Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Carrie Stokes Isgett and Virginia Weatherford of Darlington; one son, George H. Stokes of Darlington; eight grandchildren; 11 great–grandchildren and six great–great–grandchildren.
LILLIAN B. PUGH
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Lillian Brown Pugh were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2003, at Shiloh United Methodist Church with the Rev. W. S. James, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Darlington Memory Gardens directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mrs. Pugh died Tuesday June 17, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born in Mt. Pleasant, a daughter of the late Quentis and Ethel L. Ferguson Brown. She was educated in the Mt. Pleasant public schools, graduating from Laing High School. At an early age, she was a member of Holy Trinity Methodist Church. After marriage, she moved to Paterson, N.J., where she was employed with Neuman Pharmaceutical until she retired. She was a member of New A.M.E. Zion Church where she served on the senior choir. After returning to South Carolina, she joined Shiloh United Methodist Church where she was a member of the senior choir, United Methodist Women Organization, the BMM Women's Club and regularly attended mid–day weekly services.
Survivors include her husband, McIver Pugh of the home; a son, Gerald Pugh of Paterson, N.J.; a daughter–in–law, Hattie Pugh of Darlington; step–daughter, Rose Arthur of Georgia.; four brothers, Quentis (Amy) Brown of Charleston, Wilfred (Arlene) Brown of Mt. Pleasant, Gilbert Carl (Mabel) Brown of East Orange, N.J., and Alvin (Betty) Brown of Lugoff; two sisters, Olivia Brown of Paterson, N.J., and Mary Ann Brown of Lugoff; four grandchildren; three step–grandchildren; six brothers–in–law; three sisters–in–law, nieces and nephews.
LOUISE H. AMERSON
Funeral services for Louise Hopkins Amerson, 66, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at Liberty Hill Baptist Church, directed by Norton Funeral Home with the Rev. James E. Beck Jr. officiating.
Mrs. Amerson died Sunday, June 22. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late George W. and Nellie Moody Hopkins.
Surviving are two grandchildren, Keith (Harley) Amerson III; and Amanda Lou Amerson, of Hartsville; two great–grands and a sister, Mary Lewis Capell of Hartsville.
Mrs. Amerson was predeceased by a son, Keith Amerson Jr.
LEODUS T. WHITLEY
BETHUNE— Graveside services for Leodus Tadlock Whitley, 92, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at Brannon cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville Chapel, with the Rev. Jeff Cockrell officiating.
Mrs. Whitley died Friday, June 21. She was born in Union County, N.C., a daughter of the late Lemuel and Susie Deese Tadlock. She was a member of the Bethune Baptist Church, was retied from Sonoco Products Co. after 31 years of service and a member of the Old Timers Club.
Surviving are three sons and daughters–in–law, Donald (Ethel) Whitley of Bethune, Harold (Esther) Whitley of Camden and Jerry (Gloria) Whitley of Columbia; a brother, Howard Tadlock of Bennettsville; five grandchildren and nine–great–grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
EDITH JORDAN
Graveside services for Edith Frances Wilson Jordan, 91, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 21, 2003, at Western Prong Baptist Church cemetery with the Revs. Dr. Jerry Kinlaw and Ben W. Konopa officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of North Myrtle Beach, 200 Hwy. 17 S., North Myrtle Beach, SC 29582 or Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 1700, Chicago, IL 60601.
Mrs. Jordan, widow of Herbert M. Jordan Jr., died Friday, June 13, 2003. Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late Clyde Raymond and Elizabeth Dowling Wilson. Mrs. Jordan graduated from St. John's High School in Darlington and attended Georgia Southern College in Statesboro, Ga. She was the office manager of the Herbert M. Jordan Insurance Agency in Washington. Upon retirement and during her residence in North Myrtle Beach, Mrs. Jordan became active in the Colonial Dames, XVIIth Century, the Daughters of the American Colonists, and the Huguenot Society. She was also an active member of the First Baptist Church of North Myrtle Beach and of the North Myrtle Beach Order of the Amaranth.
Surviving are her sister, Elizabeth Wilson Wiest of Hyattsville, Md.; four nephews; two nieces. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Annie Jeter, Leola Konopa, and Lessie Hearon.
FANNIE GOODSON
DARLINGTON — Graveside services for Fannie Odom Goodson, 85, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2003, at Westview Memorial Park cemetery with her granddaughter, the Rev. Pressley Marie Neal, officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Emmanuel Baptist Church Building Fund, 949 North Marquis Hwy., Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mrs. Goodson, widow of Marion James Goodson Sr., died Thursday, June 19, 2003. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Maxie and Maggie Blackman Odom. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and the Fellowship Bible Sunday school class.
Surviving are her sons, Marion Goodson Jr. of Hartsville, Ricky Goodson of Darlington; daughters and sons–in–law, Frances and Harry Golden of Charleston, Barbara and Jim Neal of Columbia; 10 grandchildren; and nine great–grandchildren.
VERNON MOZINGO
Funeral services for Vernon Askins Mozingo, 79, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Bob Cline will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 104 E. Home Ave., Hartsville SC 29550.
Mrs. Mozingo, widow of Mendel M. Mozingo, died Sunday, June 22, 2003. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph D. and Creola Newsom Askins. She was a member of First Baptist Church, the Jackie Hall Sunday school class, and the Mary Byrd / Mae Goudelock Circle. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was retired after 47 years with Belk Department Store.
Surviving are her daughter and son–in–law, Sherry and Jimmy Cross of Hartsville; sister, Cynthia Calloway of Georgetown; sister–in–law, Marie Askins of Columbia; and granddaughter, Katelyn Cross. She was predeceased by her brothers, John Askins and Paul Askins.
KENNETH SOWELL
McBEE — Funeral services for Kenneth Sowell, 69, will be held at 4 p.m. today, June 25, 2003, at McBee United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roger Dodds officiating. Burial will be in McBee cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville Chapel.
Mr. Sowell died Sunday, June 22, after an illness. He was born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late John Purdy and Etta Sarah Melton Sowell. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co. after 35 years of service, where he was a supervisor in the Spiral Dept., a member of the Old Timers Club, McBee United Methodist Church, served on the McBee Town Council for a number of years, was a member of the Newman Cassidy American Legion Post No. 139 and was a veteran of the Vietnam War.
Surviving are his wife, Patsy Ann Walters Sowell of McBee; brother, the Rev. Paul Sowell of McBee; several special nieces and nephews and close friends of the Breakfast Club at the Huddle House.
WILLIAM E. WALLACE
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for William Earl Wallace, 95, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at Pine Grove United Methodist Church with interment following in the church cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Terry Beckom and directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Wallace was born in Union County, N.C. son of the late Samuel A. and Dora Belk Wallace. He was a member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church where he was involved in the Methodist Men's Club and the Men's Sunday School Class. Mr. Wallace was also a member of the Moose Lodge and was owner and operator of W. E. Wallace Grocery.
Surviving are four daughters, Mary W. (Thomas) Godbold of Timmonsville, Frances W. Hale of Darlington, Doris W. Anderson of Jacksonville, Fla. and Cecelia W. Blayton of Darlington; one grandson, Shale W. Anderson; three brothers, Clyde (Elma) Wallace, Ernest (Jackie) Wallace and Ney (Grace) Wallace, all of Hartsville; and one sister, Helen W. (Edward) Flowers of Hartsville.
Memorial are suggested to Pine Grove United Methodist Church, 2635 S. Center Rd., Timmonsville, SC 29161.
ALEXANDER WHITE
Funeral services for Alexander White were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 21, 2003, at Mt. Beulah United Methodist Church with burial following in the church cemetery. Professional services were directed by Hines Funeral Home.
Mr. White died Tuesday, June 17, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., a son of the late Willie and Gloria Richardson Sweetenburg. He worked as a tractor operator for Hoyt Campbell Farms and was married
to Christell Levette Thomas. He was a member of Mt. Beulah Untied Methodist Church. He was also a member of William Temple Masonic Lodge No. 238 of the Ashland Community.
Survivors in addition to his wife, Christell White of the home, are his mother, Gloria (Leonard) Sweetenburg of Hartsville; five sons, DeShean Thomas, Alexander White Jr., Alsavies White, Justin White and Joshea White, all of Hartsville; one daughter, Gloria White of Hartsville; four brothers, Jeffery White, David White and James (Joann) White, all of Hartsville, and Santonio White of Spartanburg.
CLARA CARNES
DARLINGTON — Graveside funeral services for Clara Louise Welch Carnes, 91, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2003, in Darlington Memory Gardens with the Rev. Terry Beckom officiating, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Carnes died Saturday, June 21, in a local hospital. She was born in Chester, daughter of the late Brady and Rosa Welch. She had been employed by the Darlington Cotton Mill and Nytronics. Mrs. Carnes was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church.
Surviving are one son, Ralph E. (Bertie) Carnes of Sumter; one daughter, Barbara (Don) Small of Darlington; six grandchildren; eight great–grandchildren; four great–great–grandchildren; and a brother, Eli Welch of Rockingham, N.C .

AILEEN W. DeLOACH
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Aileen Sweet Wilson DeLoach were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, in Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. D. L. Hughes, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Darlington Memorial cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mrs. DeLoach died Thursday, June 19, in a local hospital after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Frank and Agnes Taylor Wilson Jr. She was the widow of Deacon Jeff DeLoach.
She graduated from Mayo High School Class of 1932. She was a member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. After moving to New York, she joined St. John Baptist Church. After returning to Darlington she reinstated her membership at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Deaconess Ministry and the Senior Missionary Society. In the community, she was a member of Pride of Darlington Chapter No. 88 Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 210.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Ruth Johnson of Darlington; an aunt, Mrs. Lucille Perry of New York; a brother–in–law, Sam McCray of Darlington; two step–children, Inez Holmes of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Jeff DeLoach Jr. of Savannah, Ga.; three adopted sisters, Marie Ruth, Georgia James and Gertrude Rogers, all of Darlington; adopted children, Joanne Bonaparte, Barbara Evans, Elizabeth Upson, Lillie M. Johnson and Alliree Davis; two goddaughters, Argaria Montgomery and Queen F. Jett; nieces and nephews.
IRENE WILSON
Funeral services for Claire Irene Flowers Wilson, 86, will be 4 p.m. Thursday, June 26, 2003, in the Original First Free Will Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Mike McCauley. Interment will follow in Grove Hill cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Wilson died Tuesday, June 24, at a Florence hospital. She was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late George Washington and Corrie Odom Flowers. She was married
to the late Elbert James Wilson. Mrs. Wilson was a housewife and member of the Original First Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters and sons–in–law, Judy and Ray Strickland of Darlington and Sheila and Orhan Soysal of North Myrtle Beach; one son and daughter–in–law, Gary and Joyce Wilson of Moyock, N.C.; 14 grandchildren and 15 great–grandchildren.
Mrs. Wilson was preceded in death by a son, Elbert Wayne Wilson.
The family will receive friends from 7–9 tonight, at the funeral home.
