DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Edward ŇBrotherÓ Samuel Sr. will be held at 12 noon today, June 13, 2003, at St. James United Methodist Church with the Rev. Anna G. Miller, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Florence National cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. Samuel died Monday evening, June 9, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Albert and Theodosia McCurray Samuel. He was the widower of Mable Gandy Samuel.
He received his formal education in Darlington County public schools, graduating from Mayo High School, class of 1942. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and was honorably discharged.
He was a life member of St. James United Methodist Church where he served in many capacities. He was employed in the family business, The Samuel Tailor Shop. In the community, he was a volunteer fireman with the Darlington City Fire Department with over 20 years and was honored with being Fireman of the Year in 1979 and 1982. He was a foundering member of the REACT Team No. 108, a member of the American Legion Post No. 210 and an honorary member of the Tuskeegee Airmen.
Survivors include his four children, Sheila Samuel of Summerville, Betty (Hartwell) Jackson of Darlington, Edward (Latasha) Samuel Jr. of the home and Deva Jackson of Sweet Briar, Va.; two step–grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Ruperla (Dixie) Robinson of Newport News, Va.; a brother, Wendell (Barbara) Samuel of Austin, Texas; a sister–in–law, Mrs. Lorena Gandy of Augusta, Ga.; nieces, nephews and cousins. Four sisters and four brothers preceded him in death.
OLLIE B. SLOAN
GREENVILLE — A celebration of life and funeral services for Ollie Ridgeway Barsh Sloan, 88, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 15, 2003, with interment at Woodlawn Memorial cemetery in Greenville, directed by Mackey Mortuary of Greenville. Visitation will be held from 1 until 3 p.m. at Mackey Mortuary.
Mrs. Sloan died Tuesday, June 10, in Atlanta, Ga. She was born on July 5, 1914, to the late Bessie Gossett Ridgeway and Elijah Lafayette Ridgeway in Princeton, S.C. She was a member of Pendleton Street Baptist Church of Greenville, First Baptist Church of Clemson, the Clemson Garden Club, and various Clemson bridge clubs throughout the years.
She is survived by son, Richard (Vicki) Barsh of Atlanta, Ga.; daughter, Sandra (Jim) McKellar of Hartsville; son–in–law, Bill (Ann) Coogler of Salem; grandchildren Bill (Madeline) Coogler, Tony Coogler, Rick (Karen) Coogler, Abby Barsh, Jason (Jennifer) McKellar, Julie McKellar and great–grandchildren, Emily and Benjamin Coogler.
She was preceded in death by siblings, J. I. Ridgeway, Bessie Mae Ridgeway, McMahan Swift, Anne Ridgeway Sullivan, Nell Ridgeway Blalock Livingston; husbands, Jake Barsh and Jack Sloan and a daughter, Joann Barsh Coogler.

SOCIETY HILL — Funeral services for Peter Kelly Jr., 82, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 7, 2003, in Bethel Baptist Church in Cash, S.C. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Kelly died Tuesday, June 3, in the V.A. Hospital in Columbia. He was born in Carthage, N.C., a son of the late Peter and Ida Wallace Kelly. He was educated in Carthage, Pinckney High School System in North Carolina.
Mr. Kelly attended Bethel Baptist Church. He was self employed as an independent truck driver for more than 60 years. He was founder of Allboro Contractors Trucking Company in Brooklyn, N.Y., P & S Kelly Trucking and Son and Shirley's Lounge in Society Hill. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley O. Kelly of Society Hill; four children, Vincent M. Oneal (Miranda) of Fayetteville, N.C, U.A. Army Master Sgt. Gladys E. Kelly of Columbia and S. C. Highway Patrol Lt. Darryl A. Kelly (Chrystal) of Florence; three sisters, Mary Kelly Foxx, Gladys Kelly Brower of Charlotte, N.C., Christine Kelly Smith of Atlantic City, N.J.; grandchildren, Crystal T. Oneal, Alisha R. Kelly, Courtney C. Kelly, Darryl A. Kelly Jr., Vinecia Oneal and Kiera S. Oneal and other close relatives and friends. Mr. Kelly was predeceased by a daughter, Denise A Kelly.
Viewing of the body will be at Groom Funeral Home in Cheraw tonight, June 6, from 5–9, and the family will receive friends from 7–8 p.m.
WILLIAM WILSON
DARLINGTON — A memorial service for William Bill Frazier Wilson, 79, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 7, 2003, in Central Baptist Church in Darlington, officiated by the Rev. Timothy Coker, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Wilson died Thursday, May 22, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born in Greensboro, N.C., a son of the late Lewis Holiday Wilson and Margaret Phoenix Wilson. He served his country in the Air Force during World War II. Mr. Wilson was a Mason and a member of Central Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Cunningham Wilson of Darlington; three sons, William Frazier Wilson Jr. of Lithovia, Ga., Stephen Hayne Wilson of Mt. Pleasant and William Russell Wilson of Darlington; and four grandchildren, Brian, Lisa, Stephen and Jennifer Wilson.
WILLIE SMITH
Funeral services for Willie Smith, 76, will be held at 1 p.m. today, June 6, 2003, in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Bethesda Baptist Church cemetery in Society Hill, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Smith died Monday, June 2, in McLeod Regional Medical Center. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Will and Clara Brown Smith. He was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church and received his education in the public schools of Darlington County.
Surviving are a daughter, Clara Phillips of Darlington; a sister, Maggie (Jay) Sanders of Ansonia, Conn.; and seven grandchildren.
LEVERN BYRD
Funeral services for Levern Byrd, 86, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 5, 2003, in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel with burial in St. John United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Byrd died Monday, June 2, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late, Hendrix and Geneva Mack Byrd.
Surviving are a daughter, Geneva Ellerbe of Hartsville; a son, James (Olene) Byrd of Hartsville; a step–son, Levern Graham of Ansonia, Conn.; two sisters, Ruth Nickelson and Janny Mae (James) Woodham, both of Hartsville; nine grandchildren and 25 great–grandchildren.
JEFF H. BRYANT
DARLINGTON — Graveside funeral services for Jeff Howard Bryant, 83, were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, June 5, in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Bryant was born in Darlington County, son of the late J. Davis and Marie Flowers Bryant. He was a member of the First Church of God. Surviving are his wife, Greta Elizabeth Register Bryant, of the home; four sons, Jeff Howard Jerry (Sandra) Bryant of Darlington, Jerald Lawrence (Dianne) Bryant of Florence, George Walter (Becky) Bryant and Mickey Lee Bryant, all of Darlington; one daughter, Linda Bryant (Steve) Crosby of Darlington; 11 grandchildren and 10 great–grandchildren.
Mr. Bryant was preceded in death by three brothers, Olin Bryant, Ellis Bryant and Mack Bryant, and two sisters, Emogena Pelletier and Lois Bradley.
RAY LEE WATERS
Funeral services for Ray Lee Waters were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 5, 2003, at Mt. Calvary AME Church. Burial was in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Hines Funeral Home.
Mr. Waters died Sunday, June 1, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Edward L. and Susie McIver Waters. He was educated in the public schools and worked for Dudley Paint for 20 years as a supervisor. He was married
to Ruth Jeffery Waters.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the home, include a daughter, Fran (Sylvester) Knox of Columbia; three sisters, Cora Hawkins, Hattie Waters and Edna Waters of Hartsville; three brothers, Wellington W. (Bertha) of Springdale, Md., Emory (Virginia) Waters of Mitchellville, Md. and Joseph (Brenda) Waters of Newark, N.J.; two sisters–in–law, Evelyn Thomas of Hartsville and Bernice Waters of Spartanburg; three grandchildren, Bryan, Brett and Shalita Knox, all of Columbia.
WALTER GROOMS
LAMAR — Funeral services for Walter Lee Grooms, 76, were held at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 5, 2003, in Lamar Free Will Baptist Church with interment following in Lamar cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Grooms died Tuesday, June 3. He was born in Livesville, N.C., a son of the late Tom and Elizabeth Grooms. He was a retired truck driver and was a member of Lamar Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Myrtle Ham Grooms of the home; four sons, Timothy (Angela) Grooms, Wayne Grooms, Ricky Grooms and Steve Grooms; one daughter, Loretta (Marty) Watford; a brother, Vernon Grooms; a sister, Margaret Mancill and four grandchildren.
Mr. Grooms was preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas Grooms, Prentice Grooms and Allen Grooms; one sister, Myrtle Freeman; and a son, Robbie Grooms.
JOSEPHINE COTTON
Funeral services for Josephine Cotton, 63, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2003, in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Bethesda Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Ms. Cotton died Tuesday, May 27, at her residence. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Ben and Emmie Richardson Cotton Jr. She was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church and was educated in Darlington County public schools.
Surviving are four sisters, Rosa Cotton, Almata Sims, Helen Cotton and Ellen Cotton, all of Darlington.
DORIS WILLIAMS
Graveside services for Doris Ward Williams, 82, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2003, at Swift Creek Baptist Church cemetery . The Rev. Peter Rivera will officiate and Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends this evening, Friday, June 6, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home.
Mrs. Willams, widow of Billy Williams, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Roy and Olive Flowers Ward. She was a member of the Swift Creek Baptist Church and the JoAnn Lee Sunday School class, and she was a former Sunday school teacher. She also was a member of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are her sons and daughters–in–law, Wes and Cindy Williams of West Chester, Pa., Kenny and Sandy Williams of Aynor; daughter and son–in–law, Celeste and Glenn Pete Bigham of Surfside Beach; grandchildren, Stephanie Williams, Cale Williams, Josh Williams, Sherry Weible, Glenn Bigham; five great–grandchildren; and one great–great–grandchild.
SARAH ZEMP
Memorial services for Sarah Zemp, 80, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Friday, June 6, 2003, at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. Father Ted Duvall will officiate and Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. Memorials may be made to St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, PO Box 427, Hartsville, SC 29551.
Mrs. Zemp died Friday, May 30, 2003. Born in Clarendon County, near Paxville, she was a daughter of the late James Ellis Hodge and Loretta Baker Brunson. She was a member of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church.
Surviving are her sons and daughter–in–law, Sid and Madge Zemp of Hartsville, Bob Zemp of Petersburg, Va.; daughter and son–in–law, Rita and Joe Lannutti of Folly Beach; brothers, Jack Brunson of Cleveland, S.C., Robert Brunson of Salisbury, N.C., Mickey Brunson of Bradenton, Fla.; sisters, Frances Denton of Camden, Harriet B. Bruce of Raleigh, N.C., Snookie Brunson of Columbia, Jacqueline B. Partin of Greenville; eight grandchildren; and seven great–grandchildren.
DAISY L. HARRISON
SOCIETY HILL — Funeral services for Daisy Lucille Harrison, 57, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at Greater Bethesda Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Ms. Harrison, died Sunday, Feb. 8, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Society Hill, a daughter of the late Eugene and Lucille Bounds Harrison. She was a graduate of Lang High School in Cheraw. She received the bachelor of arts degree in social studies from Barber Santia College, and also furthered her studies at Francis Marion College, the University of South Carolina and the University of Wisconsin. She also was a U.S. history instructor at Chesterfield High School for 34 1/2 years. She was a member of Greater Bethesda Baptist Church.
Surviving are one brother, Landon Harrison of Worthington, Ohio; three sisters, Wilhelmenia Bulls of Byrands Road, Md., Geraldine (Edward) Ray of Ontario, Calif., and Bobbie J. Harrison of Society Hill; three aunts, Nellie Russell of Worthington, Ohio, Lillie Jackson of Newark, N.J., and Juanita Wilson of Florence; and a host of other close relatives.
CATHERINE BLACKMON
McBEE — Funeral services for Catherine Blackmon, 97, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Feb. 13, 2004, at Galilee Baptist Church in McBee. Burial will be in Pine Forest cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mrs. Blackmon died Friday, Feb. 6, at her residence after an illness. She was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Alexander and Nealy Clyburn Blackmon. She was educated in the Chesterfield public school system and was a member of Galilee Baptist Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Mary Ruth Chaplin Blackwell of the home; one granddaughter, Emma Jean (Jimmie) Stallings of Darlington; one grandson, Randolph Stallings; two step–grandchildren; two great–grandchildren; two great–great–grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives.
