LAMAR — Funeral services for J. Boardman J.B. Bryant, 77, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at I–20 Baptist Church with interment following in Swift Creek cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home of Lamar.
Mr. Bryant died Monday, Feb. 2, in a local hospital. He was born in Darlington County, son of the late Junie A. and Bessie Sexton Bryant. He was employed with Darlington Fuel Company for 37 years. Mr. Bryant enjoyed fishing, hunting and was a member of the Lynches River Blue Grass Association. He was a member of I–20 Baptist Church.
Surviving are five sons, Ernie (Kim) Bell of Florence, Paul (Angel) Bryant of Darlington, Reggie (Paula) Junie Bell of Lamar, Barry A. Bryant Sr. of Darlington and Allen (Anita) Rivers of Lexington, N.C.; four daughters, June (Randy) Stone of Hartsville, Louise (Harry) Ballew of Camden, Becky (Jack) Holt of Coward and Betty Jean (Paul) Lee of Columbia; 23 grandchildren; 12 great–grandchildren; two brothers, A. P. Bryant of Hartsville and Ralph Bryant of Pensacola, Fla.; two sisters, Doris Huggins of Pensacola, Fla., and Harriet Morrell of Hartsville; also special friends, Bill and Paulette King and Margaret White.
Mr. Bryant was preceded in death by a son, David W. Purvis; a brother, William Bud Bryant, and sisters, Annie Mae Gandy, Margaret Harrell and Catherine Rivers.
REECE ANDERSON
Funeral services for Reece LaVern Rock Anderson, 64, were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, in the Chapel of Layton–Anderson Funeral Home in Florence. Interment was in the Anderson cemetery near Timmonsville.
Mr. Anderson died Monday, Feb. 2, in a Columbia hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Reece Pinckney and Susie A. Anderson. He served in the U.S. Army and retired as a shipping clerk from Perfection High Test.
Surviving are his wife, Dora Ellen Boan Anderson of Hartsville; a son, Mark E. (Gwen) Creel of Orangeburg; three daughters, Teresa (Thomas) Hudson of Hartsville, Pamela Barfield and Cynthia (Stanley) Gainey, both of Darlington; a sister, Sue Nell (Clifton) Eaddy of Darlington; a special grandson, Michael (Heidi) Walters of Hartsville; 13 grandchildren and 10 great–grandchildren.
WALTER YARBOROUGH JR.
LEXINGTON — Services for Walter Yarborough Jr., 70, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Feb. 6, 2004, at Caughman–Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, with burial to follow at Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church cemetery with full military honors. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Mr. Yarborough died Wednesday, Feb. 4. Born in Hartsville, he was the son of the late Walter and Hattie Yarborough. He retired from the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War and Korean War.
He is survived by his wife, Robbie Yarborough of Lexington; three sons, Brent Yarborough of Lexington, Mike Yarborough and Donald Yarborough, both of Surfside Beach; a sister, Henrietta Johnson of Hartsville, and six grandchildren.
He was predeceased by sisters Sarah (Salley) Williams and Roxie Higgins.
JAMES ATKINSON
Funeral services for James H. Atkinson, 77, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Feb. 6, 2004, at Gum Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Jeff Gardner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mr. Atkinson died Wednesday, Feb. 4. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Simmons Lee and Liza Harding Atkinson. He was retired from Sonoco Products Company after 20 years of service and was a member of Gum Branch Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Geraldine Davis Atkinson of Hartsville; daughter, Sandra Atkinson of Hartsville; brother, Roby Atkinson of Hartsville; sisters, Mary Fields of McBee and Lou Sowell of Hartsville.

CONNIE SARVIS
FLORENCE — Funeral services for Constance Connie Johnson Sarvis, 68, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 6, 2004, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home, Darlington. Interment will follow in Grove Hill cemetery.
Mrs. Sarvis died Tuesday, Feb. 3, in a Florence hospital. She was born in Marion County, daughter of the late Clyde and Viola Brown Johnson. She was a housewife and care giver.
Surviving are her husband, Thelbert Sarvis of Florence; two sons, Michael Alford of Alabama and Mickey (Donna) Sarvis of Wilmington, N.C.; two daughters, Dianne (William) Strawn and Jean (Ray) Peele, both of Darlington; seven grandchildren and six great–grandchildren; one sister, Gladys Rising of Gaffney, and one brother, Clyde Johnson of Tennessee.
Memorials are suggested to First Pentecostal Holiness Church Building Fund, PO Box 653, Darlington, SC 29540.
LYVIAN CHAPMAN
Funeral services for Lyvian Byrd Chapman, 84, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church. The Rev. Bud Boatwright will officiate with burial in Mt. Olivet cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends this evening, Feb. 6, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home.
Mrs. Chapman, widow of Carroll Chapman, died Thursday, Feb. 5. Born in the Byrdtown section of Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late John D. and Mattie Howle Byrd. She was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church and was retired from Byerly Hospital as a nurse.
Surviving are her son, Van Chapman of Hartsville; daughters and sons–in–law, Cathy and Gary Williams of Anderson, Dianne and Elbert Warren of Hartsville, Elaine and Richard Rhyne of Chesterfield; daughter–in–law, Mary Sue Chapman of Hartsville; brother, Ravenel Byrd of Hartsville; sisters, Sara Mildred Griggs and Mary B. Byrd, both of Hartsville; grandchildren, Dean Chapman, Dale Parker, Robin Davis, Rebecca Warren, Bert Warren, Mike Williams, Renee Volrath, Hope Wallace, Rob Rhyne; 10 great–grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Joel Dean Chapman, and her daughter, June Carol Chapman.
BETTY BAYNES
Funeral services for Betty Maness Baynes, 90, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at West Hartsville Baptist Church. The Revs. Dr. Bev Kennedy, Paul Sullivan, and Mark Bowers will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends this evening, Feb. 6, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the West Hartsville Baptist Church, 1003 W. Carolina Avenue, Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mrs. Baynes died Tuesday, Feb. 3. Born in Montgomery County, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Thomas Walker and Emeline Cornelison Maness. She was a charter member of West Hartsville Baptist Church, superintendent of the Young Married Couples Class for many years, and Grounds Committee for many years she was responsible for the beautiful crepe myrtles planted beside the church on Fourteenth Street. She was a member of the Love Sunday School Class, the Eastern Star for over 55 years, and the Do–Si–Do Club.
Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Phillip and Julia Baynes of Fountain Inn; daughter and son–in–law, Betty Alice and Richard Harper of Mt. Pleasant; sister–in–law, Edith Maness of Asheboro, N.C.; four grandchildren; six great–grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Henry Duncan Baynes.
ROBERT WATSON JR.
Funeral services for Robert Watson Jr. will be held at 1 p.m. today, Feb. 4, 2004, in the Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in Florence National cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Hartsville. The family is receiving visitors at the residence at 718 Hudson St., Hartsville.
Mr. Watson died Friday, Jan. 30, at his residence. He was born Feb. 9, 1948, in Darlington County, a son of Homer and Annie Allen Watson. He was educated in the public schools of the county and graduated from Butler High School in 1966. After graduation he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served during the Vietnam War. He spent most of his service in Germany, and upon returning to the United States, he was assigned to duty at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. He was honorably discharged at Ft. Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C., and later returned to Hartsville to live.
He is survived by his mother, Annie Lou Watson of Hartsville; one son, Robbie Watson; one brother, Bobby (Ocynthia) Watson of Bronx, N.Y.; two sisters, Linda Smith of Baltimore, Md., and Bobie (Heyward) Knox of Hartsville; and many other relatives and very dear friends.
BELVA K. BOCHETTE
Funeral services for Belva K. Bochette, 84, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at West Hartsville Baptist Church with the Rev. Bev Kennedy officiating. Burial will follow in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Bochette, wife of the late George M. Bochette, died Saturday, Jan. 31, in a Culpepper, Va., nursing facility. Born on July 12, 1919, in Lexington, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Koon and Martha Taylor Koon. She was a member of West Hartsville Baptist Church. Mrs. Bochette was preceded in death by three sisters, Edith K. Howell, Kathleen K. Langston and Hazel K. Hoffman; two brothers, Odell Koon Sr. and James Koon; a son, Ron M. Bochette Sr.; daughter, Tonda H. Fishback; and grandson, Brian A. Bochette.
Surviving are her daughter–in–law, Jeanne W. Bochette of Amissville, Va.; four grandchildren and seven great–grandchildren.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to West Hartsville Baptist Church.
WILLIE DIXON
Graveside services for James Willie Dixon, 86, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Feb. 4, 2004, at Green Hill Church of God. The Rev. Buddy Amerson will officiate and Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge.
Mr. Dixon, widower of Dianne Inez Kelley Dixon, died Saturday, Jan. 31. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of James and Fannie Dixon.
Surviving are his step–son and spouse, G. W. and Jerdgie Mae Smothers of Hartsville.
JAMES CALVIN LEE
LAMAR — Funeral services for James Calvin Lee were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2004, at Salvation Temple Holiness Church in Hartsville with the Rev. George McElveen, pastor, officiating. Burial was held at noon on Monday, Feb. 2, in Florence National cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Hartsville.
Mr. Lee died Tuesday, Jan. 27, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Bertha Ratliff Lee and the late Otis Lee Sr. He was educated in the public schools of Darlington County, graduating from Spaulding High School with the class of 1968. After graduation he entered the U. S. Army and served in the Vietnam war. After being honorably discharged, he returned to South Carolina where he worked at Dixie Cup, Defender Manpower and was last employed with Tyner Farms of Darlington.
Surviving in addition to his mother, Bertha Lee of Darlington are two daughters, Machell (Robert) Heard of Austell, Ga., and Felecia Lee of Marietta, Ga.; five sisters, Sara (Elder George) McElveen and Grace (Conely) Shaw, both of Darlington, Hattie (Garret) Sanders of Florence, Dianne (Corthers) Wright of Lamar and Betty (Donnie) Roderick of Irmo; two brothers, Isaac Lee and George Lee, both of Darlington; an aunt, Lessie Lee of Lamar; four grandchildren.

Graveside services for Leslie Thomas Tom Griggs, 76, were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at Florence National cemetery with Bishop Heber Ellison officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mr. Griggs died Thursday, Jan. 29. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Bennie William and Addie Moody Griggs. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
SCOTT MacDONALD
Funeral services for Scott MacDonald, 37, were held at 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Bob Cline and the Rev. Charles Roberts officiating. Burial followed in the Magnolia cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mr. MacDonald died Friday, Jan. 30. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Michael and Kay Sparrow MacDonald. He was a graduate of Hartsville High School, class of 1984, member of First Baptist Church, honorary member of the Hartsville Rescue Squad and was employed with A. O. Smith in McBee.
Surviving are his wife, Gayle Parnell MacDonald of Hartsville; his parents of Hartsville; a son, Christopher Scott MacDonald, and a daughter, Ashley Elizabeth MacDonald, both of Hartsville; two brothers, Ellie Harold (Sharon) MacDonald of Timmonsville and Jesse Trent (Miriam) MacDonald of Hartsville; several nieces and nephews.
ROBERT LEE GEE
Funeral services for Robert Lee Gee, 75, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 4, 2004, at Nathan Temple Fire Baptized Holiness Church with the Rev. D. L. Heard, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. Gee died Thursday, Jan. 29, in a Hartsville hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Lay Martin and Whitt Gee. He received his formal education in the Darlington County public schools. He was a retired farmer and he worked as a concrete layer for Dawkins Concrete.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah Pauline Gee of Hartsville; five daughters, Geraldine (Leon) Jackson, Mattie (James) Horton, Nellie Ann (Charlie) Frazier, all of Hartsville, Mary Lee Cuffie of Baltimore, Md., Ethel Mae (Charles) Clemons of Connecticut; five sons, Robert Lee (Sally) Gee, James (Mary) Gee, Ervin (Shirley) Gee, David (Janice) Gee, Calvin (Deborah) Gee, all of Connecticut; one adopted son, Anthony Goodson of Hartsville; 27 grandchildren; 31 great–grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends.
