Graveside services for Ellen Steen George, 94, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Jan. 30, 2004, at the First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be today, Jan. 30, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. George died Wednesday, Jan. 28. She was born in New York.
BOB GRAHAM
DARLINGTON — Graveside funeral services for Robert Archie Bob Graham, 67, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, in Magnolia cemetery, Hartsville, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Graham died Tuesday, Jan. 27, in a Florence hospital. He was born in Marlboro County, son of the late Archie and Marie Haithcock Graham. He was a retired state trooper and courier for Champus. Mr. Graham was an avid golfer and enjoyed gardening.
Surviving are his wife, Margie Edwards Graham of Darlington; three daughters, Sandra Graham, Pat (Tim) Moore, both of Darlington, and Robin (Steve) Carneal of Richmond, Va.; step–daughter, Ginny (Rob) Faircloth of Florence; six grandchildren and six great–grandchildren; also one sister, Margaret (Ken) Layton of Florence.
JAMES CALVIN LEE
DARLINGTON — Mr. James Calvin Lee died on Tuesday, Jan. 27 at his residence after a short illness. The family will receive friends at the residence at 1425 Country Manor Road. Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Lamar is in charge of all arrangements.
MARTHA E. COPELAND
LAMAR — Funeral services for Martha Ellen Mama Coe Copeland, 101, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at Lamar United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Melvin Flail. Burial followed in the Lamar cemetery, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.
Mrs. Copeland died Wednesday, Jan. 21. Mama Coe, as she was affectionately known, was born in Lamar on Aug. 4, 1902, a daughter of the late William James Joye and Ada Boykin Joye. She graduated from Lamar High School in 1918 and attended Winthrop College and taught school at the Newman Swamp Schoolhouse in Lamar. She was a lifelong member of Lamar United Methodist Church, where she was active as a Sunday School teacher for the young people and teacher and leader for the World Club for Children. In later years she was a teacher for the Ladies Bible Class and was active with various church circles.
Surviving are two daughters, Ada Margaret (William) Ellen of Bishopville and Doris Jean (Clarence) Fields of Lamar; one son, W. W. (Billy) Copeland Jr. (Gale) of Harrisburg, N.C.; eight grandchildren; 15 great–grandchildren and three great–great grandchildren.
Mrs. Copeland was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, William Wallace Copeland Sr., who died in 1987, and by four sisters and four brothers.

JOSEPH SMITH
Funeral services for Joseph Smith, 37, will be held at 12 p.m today, Jan. 28, 2004, at Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel with Bishop James Williams officiating. Burial will be Thursday, Jan. 29, in Bethesda Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Smith died Thursday, Jan. 22, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Darlington County to the late Joseph and Nellie Mae Tedder Smith Sr. He was educated in Darlington County public schools and was a graduate of St. John's High School. He was employed with Landair Transport in Hartsville. He attended Bethesda Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy Smith of Hartsville; four children, Reginald Jarod, Felicia Octavius, Tamekia Lewanda and Joseph Dovanta Smith, all of Hartsville; one brother, Ervin Smith of Society Hill; two sisters, Barbara (Cardell) Cherry of Florence and Rosie Smith of Hartsville; five aunts, Christine McFarland, Rachael McFarland, Virginia Tedder, Donna Tedder and Rosemary Tedder, all of Darlington, Ruth Mae Harrison and Evon Tedder, both of Ansonia, Conn.; two uncles, Johnnie Tedder of Ansonia, Conn., and Howard Tedder of Darlington; and a host of other close relatives and friends.
RUTH M. CUFFIE
Funeral services for Ruth McCall Cuffie, 62, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, at Liberty Hill Holiness Church. Burial followed in the Kay Branch Missionary Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mrs. Cuffie died Tuesday, Jan. 20, at her residence. She was born in Darlington County to the late Rev. Mardie Suessie Kennedy McCall. She graduated from Butler High School and later graduated from Voorhees College in Denmark. She worked as a clerk in her father's store and also with the Saleeby Center and Sarah Lee Hosiery for many years. Mrs. Cuffie was also a dedicated member of Freewill Holiness Mission.
Surviving are two children, Frederick Cuffie and Anges Scurry; three grandchildren, Jasmine Heron, China Scurry and Sarah Washington; and other closer relatives and friends.
ROSANNA McKNIGHT
DARLINGTON — Graveside services for Rosanna McKnight, 90, of Darlington, formerly of Kingstree, were held at 12 noon Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, in Faith Memorial Gardens with the Rev. J. W. Kelly officiating, with burial following, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Ms. McKnight died Thursday, Jan. 22, in a Florence nursing home after a long illness. She was born in Kingstree, a daughter of the late Adam and Nancy Cirus McKnight Sr. She received her education in the Williamsburg County public school system. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. She was a farmer.
Survivors include a brother, Willie James McKnight of Darlington; two nephews, Donald (Sharon) Jackson and Ronald (Cynthia) Jackson, both of Darlington; two great–nieces and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Adam McKnight, Abe McKnight, George McKnight and Paul McKnight.
CALVIN L. HARKLESS
Funeral services for Calvin Levern Harkless were held on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at the Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel. Burial followed at the National cemetery in Florence, directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Hartsville.
Mr. Harkless died on Friday, Jan. 23, at his home after an illness. He was born in Darlington County on Dec. 31, 1957, a son of Lottie H. Dargan and Joshua Harkless. He was educated in the public schools of the county and graduated from Butler High School in 1975. He was a United States Marine Corps veteran. He was also a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church.
He is survived by his mother, Lottie H. Dargan of Hartsville; his father, Joshua Harkless of Baltimore, Md.; a daughter, Crystal Harkless of Raleigh, N.C.; a son, Gervon Johnson of Florence; two brothers, Joshua Harkless Jr. of Greenville and Johnathan Matthew (Leola) Harkless of Marietta, Calif.; one sister, Susie (William) Parrott of Charlotte, N.C.; one grandchild, four nephews, five nieces and many other aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.
JAMES EARL HODGES
Funeral services for James Earl Hodges, 52, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 28, 2004, at Wilkes Chapel United Methodist Church. The Revs. Wallace Strickland and Buddy Amerson will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 2700 Middleburg Dr., Columbia SC 29204.
Mr. Hodges died Sunday, Jan. 25. Born in Camden, he was a son of the late Earl Stanley and Dollie Mae Wilkes Hodges. He was retired from Sonoco Products Company.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley James Hodges of Hartsville; daughters and sons–in–law, Christie and Bobby Hayden, Jamie and David McLeod, all of Hartsville; sisters, Linda Kay Boan and Margie Smith, both of Hartsville; brother, Donald Hodges of Hartsville; grandsons, Byron Hayden and Zachary Hayden.
ORENTHIUS A. ROGERS
Orenthius A. Rogers of Stone Mountain. Ga., formally of Hartsville, son of Malcolm and Patricia Rogers, died on Saturday, Jan. 24, in an Atlanta hospital after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 2341 N. Center Road.
GEORGE ANNA SMITH
Funeral services for George Anna Benjamin Smith, 82, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 28, 2004, at New Hopewell Baptist Church in Darlington with the Rev. Calvin Daniels officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.
Mrs. Smith died Saturday, Jan. 24, at her residence after an illness. She was born in Darlington County to the late Alonzo and Martha Hendrix Benjamin. She was educated in Darlington County public schools and was a member of New Hopewell Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Genie Benjamin of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mattie Toney and Debra Smith, both of Hartsville; two sons, James Lincoln of Richmond, Va., and Roosevelt Benjamin of Hartsville; nine grandchildren, 18 great–grandchildren; two sisters, Ella Mae Benjamin and Katie Brunson, both of Darlington; and a host of other close relatives and friends.
CHESTER A. LINCOLN
Funeral services for Chester Arthur Lincoln, 84, were held at 12 noon on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at New Hopewell Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Lincoln died Tuesday, Jan. 20, at McLeod Regional Medical Center. He was born Nov. 25, 1919, in Darlington County to the late Jack and Della Jett Lincoln. He was educated in the Darlington public schools and was a member of New Hopewell Baptist Church. He was the founder of the Pallbearers Club and served as the chief. He organized the family plots for the cemetery and also served as the sexton of the church for many years. Chester also was a member of Myrtle Lodge No. 64, an honorary member of S.C. Sheriff's Association and was an active member in Antioch Voter Registration and the Democratic Party.
Surviving are his wife, Lucille Lincoln of the home; three daughters, Hazel (John) Lincoln of Darlington, Anna (Willie) Davis of Columbia and Authurine Perkins of Society Hill; two sons, Ernest Lincoln and Arthur (Dorothy) Lincoln, both of Hartsville; 11 grandchildren; 17 great–grandchildren; one sister, Laura Lincoln Watson Smith of Columbia; and a host other close relatives and friends.
LADELL WILSON
Funeral services for Ladell Wilson, 81, were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, at Kay Branch Missionary Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mrs. Wilson died Thursday, Jan. 22, at Morrell Convalescent Center in Hartsville. She was born in Darlington County to the late Thomas and Rebecca Edmonds Gilmore and was a member of Kay Branch Missionary Baptist Church. She also was a member of the Adult Choir, Senior Choir, Pastor's Aide and Missionary Society and Young Ladies of Society.
Surviving are one daughter, Patricia Wilson; one step–daughter, Marilyn Hines; two grandchildren; two step–grandchildren; two brothers, Curtis Gilmore and Haywood Gilmore; four sisters–in–law, Beulah Toney, Theola Delaine, Mable Dix and Sarah Gilmore; and a host of other close relatives and friends.
LOUISE H. FLOWERS
Funeral services for Louise Harding Flowers, 89, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, in the chapel of Norton Funeral Home with the Rev. Ricky Bledsoe officiating. Burial will be in the Clyde Church of God cemetery. Visitation will be tonight, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home.
Mrs. Flowers died Monday, Jan. 26. She was born in Lee County, a daughter of the late Fletcher and Ada Rogers Harding.
Surviving are a son, Jimmy W. Flowers of Darlington; two brothers, Bennie Harding of Hartsville and W. J. Harding of Darlington; one niece, Naomi (Dinner) Caddell of McBee and one grandchild.
ROBERT R.J. BELL
LAMAR — Graveside services for Robert R.J. Bell, 87, were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, in Mt. Pleasant cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Bell died Monday, Jan. 19, at his residence. He was born in Darlington County, son of the late Paul and Suzannah Watford Bell. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II and past Post Commander of American Legion No. 94. Mr. Bell was a retired contractor.
Surviving are a daughter, Linda (Gene) Chapman of Lamar; a son, Jimmy (Timmie) Bell of Lamar; a step–son, Joe Reynolds Jr. of Cheraw; eight grandchildren, Gene (Jennifer) Chapman, Robert Chris Chapman, Scott (Candi) Chapman, Stacee C. Howell, Chance (Crystal) Chapman, Stephanie Chapman, Carmen (Trey) Watson and Jason Bell; seven great–grandchildren; two brothers, Dick Bell of Lamar and Henry Bell of Hartsville; four sisters, Mary Young, Virginia Morris, Thelma Hooten, all of Florence, and Sarah Jane Dimery of Tennessee.
JERRY DAVIS
DARLINGTON — Memorial services for Ancil Jerome Jerry Davis, 81, were held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Davis died Saturday, Jan. 17, at a Florence hospital. He was born in Pleasantview, Ky., son of the late Bob and Mary Ida Bowling Davis. He served his country in the United States Army and was a veteran of World War II. He received his Ph.D. from Berea College and was a retired commercial artist.
Surviving are two daughters, Ancilla (Mike) Edwards of Akron, Ohio, and Carmen Davis Howell of Darlington; two grandsons, Brian Howell and Aaron Beach; two granddaughters, Kathy Davis and Kristina Davis; two great–grandchildren; two sisters, Arlamae Shirlie (Bruno) Praspal of Wadsworth, Ohio, and Kenevah Davis of Williamsburg, Ky.; also two special friends, Mike Jordan and Fred Layfield.
Mr. Davis was preceded in death by a son, Robert Davis.
