DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Edith Goodson, 47, were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at Lawson Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Ronald Carter, pastor, and Bishop Joseph Coe officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mrs. Goodson died Tuesday, Jan. 13, at her residence after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Levander and Dorothy Grooms Goodson. She was the widow of Wallace Goodson. She was a 1974 graduate of Lamar High School and was a member of Lawson Grove Baptist Church. She was employed at Georgia Pacific Corp/Dixie Products of Darlington for 23 years.
Survivors include her children, Felicia Alford of Florence and Jarrett Alford of the home; two step–children, Courtney Goodson and Wallace Goodson Jr., both of Darlington; four grandchildren, Joshua Alford, Solique Brunson, Chauncey Goodson and Jahalie Goodson; four sisters, Dorothy A. Goodson of Darlington, Bertha (Bishop Joseph) Coe of Austin, Texas, Rosa (Levy) Shaw of Turbeville and Pearlie (Anthony) Jones of Quinby; five brothers, Charles Goodson, Walter Goodson, William Goodson, all of Darlington, Levander Goodson of Nassau, N.Y., and Willie (Virginia) Goodson of Hartsville; six sisters–in–law; seven brothers–in–law; three special friends, Cynthia King, Diane Walters and Janice Pinkney; nieces and nephews and a special nephew, Clifton Goodson of the U.S. Army, Ft. Lee, Va.
She was preceded in death by a sister and brother, Tressie Goodson Coe and Gene Griffin.
DORETHA GOODSON
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Dorothy Grooms Doretha Goodson, 80, were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at Lawson Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Ronald Carter, pastor, and Bishop Joseph Coe officiating. Burial followed in St. John United Methodist Church cemetery directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mrs. Goodson died Wednesday, Jan. 14, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Henry and Mazie Burroughs Grooms. She was the widow of Levander Goodson.
She received her formal education in the Darlington County public schools and was a member of St. John United Methodist Church.
Survivors include seven children, Willie J. (Virginia) Goodson of Hartsville, Bertha (Bishop Joseph) Coe of Austin, Texas, Walter Goodson, Charles Goodson, William Goodson and Dorothy Ann Goodson, all of Darlington, Levander Goodson of Nassau, N.Y.; a brother, Roy Grooms of Hartsville; a sister, Modestine Williams of New York; 20 grandchildren; a host of great–grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Two daughters preceded her in death, Tressie Goodson Coe and Edith Alford Goodson.
MARY E. HUTCHINSON
Funeral services for Mary Evelyn Hutchinson, 82, were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, in the chapel of Norton Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Boswell officiating. Burial was in Magnolia cemetery.
Mrs. Hutchinson died Sunday, Jan. 18. She was born in Ahoskie, N.C., a daughter of the late Dorsey and Lola Dowdy Burden. She was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church.
Surviving are a sister, Ruth Nell Britt of Norfolk, Va.; and a brother, Ned Burden of Jackson, Ga.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Blease Hutchinson.
C.D. JOE PINNER
Funeral services for Champ Dalton Joe Pinner Jr., 83, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Jan. 21, 2004, at West Hartsville Baptist Church. The Rev. Paul Sullivan will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease Association, PO Box 7044, Columbia SC 29202 or West Hartsville Baptist Church, 1003 W. Carolina Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mr. Pinner died Monday, Jan. 19. Born in Andrews, he was a son of the late Champ Dalton and Mae Port Pinner Sr. He was a charter member of West Hartsville Baptist Church and served in the Seabees during World War II. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co. with 46 years of service and was a member of the Old Timers Club. He was also a ham radio operator (WA4RUD) .
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Edell Clanton Pinner of Hartsville; son and daughter–in–law, Champ and Kathy Pinner III of Charleston; daughters and sons–in–law, Pam and John Duck Newsome of Hartsville, Vickie and Larry Ferguson of Hartsville; sister and brother–in–law, Beulah P. and Claude Walker of Summerton; grandchildren and spouses, John L. and Kim Newsome III, Dr. Rett Newsome, Bo and Elizabeth Ferguson, Lynsey F. and John Jordan, John W. Pinner; great–grandchildren, Graham Pinner Newsome and Dalton Trayce Jordan. He was preceded in death by his brother, Arthur Pinner, and his sisters, Nell Richardson and Mary Kuhn.
EMMETT WILKES
WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Emmett Wilkes, 94, will be held at 1 p.m. today, Jan. 21, 2004, in Main Street United Methodist Church, officiated by the Revs. Joe Cal Watson and Donald Burnett. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery and Gardens, directed by Thomas Funeral Home of West Columbia. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 1 p.m. today at the church prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Main Street United Methodist Church or to the Billy Graham Crusade.
Mr. Wilkes, widower of Myrtle A. Wilkes and Lucille Kyzer Wilkes, died Sunday, Jan. 18. Born in Chesterfield County, he was the son of the late Alexander Francis and Soulie Jane Clark Wilkes. Mr. Wilkes was a United States Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. Formerly of Hartsville, he had been a local area resident since 1946. Mr. Wilkes was retired from Olympia Mill.
Surviving are his step–son, Nelson Taylor of Gilbert; granddaughters, Kim Whetsell, Melanie Butz, and Kelley Eastergard; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Men's Bible Class of the church.
CHERYL JAMES
Memorial services for Cheryl James, 37, were held Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at Punch Bowl National cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii, with Norton Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. James died Dec. 15.
Surviving are her husband, Harvey D. James; daughter, Shelby James, and sons, Mason and Brandon James, all of Hartsville.
She was preceded in death by a son, Dylan James.
SHIRLEY B. HESS
Funeral services for Shirley Berger Hess, 66, will be held at 7 p.m. tonight, Jan. 16, 2004, at the chapel of Norton Funeral Home with the Rev. Billy Campbell officiating. Visitation will be one hour following the service.
Mrs. Hess died Thursday, Jan. 15. She was born in Walnut Port, Pa., a daughter of the late Clayton T. and Edith Mae Snyder Berger.
Surviving are her husband, Robert O. Hess of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Kay and Billy Severance; three grandchildren and three great–grandchildren.
FLORA H. SEILER
Funeral services for Flora Harrell Lee Seiler, 86, were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Lydia. Burial was in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Seiler died Tuesday, Jan. 13. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Clarence David and Jessie McKelvey Lee. She was a member of Our Shepherd Lutheran Church and a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She worked at the State Department in Washington for a number of years.
Surviving are a daughter, Wilhelmina Luther; son, Lloyd H. Seiler Jr., both of Hartsville; grandsons, William Walton Luther III and John Roland Luther, also of Hartsville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Lloyd H. Seiler Sr.; sisters, Wilhemina Lee, Mary Lee Byrd, and a brother, Clarence Lee.

HANNAH S. DuBOIS
BALTIMORE, Md. — Hannah Spann DuBois, 89, formerly of Hartsville, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004. Young & Young Funeral Home is in charge of local announcements. She was the sister of the late Rev. Edward A. Spann Sr.
JACK SOWELL JR.
Funeral services for Jack Youlden Sowell Jr., 41, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Jan. 16, 2004, at McBee Baptist Church. The Rev. Wayne Williams will officiate with burial in McBee cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to McBee Baptist Church, PO Box 416, McBee, SC 29101.
Mr. Sowell died Wednesday, Jan. 14. Born in Monroe, N.C., he was a son of Jack Youlden Sowell Sr. and Lila Mangum Skinner. He was a member of McBee Baptist Church.
Surviving are his son, Derrick Wayne Sowell of Hartsville; father, of Hartsville; mother, of Bishopville; half–sister, Martha Frances Motsy Hill of Chesterfield; companion, Frances Hill of Patrick. He was preceded in death by his brother Levi Wilson Will Sowell.
JOSE PEREZ
Funeral services for Jose Perez, 42, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at the chapel of Norton Funeral Home with visitation two hours prior to the service.
Mr. Perez died Tuesday, Jan. 13. He was born in Mexico and was a son of Antonio Ventura and Dominga Servin.
LOUIS JOWERS
Funeral services for Louis Jim Jowers, 72, were held at 12 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Mt. Elon United Methodist Church with burial following in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Jowers died Monday, Jan. 5, in Pageland after an illness.
He was born in the Angelus community of Jefferson to the late Luther and Geneva Raley Jowers. He was educated in the public schools of the area and attended Mt. Elon United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his companion, Mary Ellen Wilson; two sons, Thurgood M. Jowers of St. Louis, Mo., and Quentin Wheat of Roseland, La.; two daughters, Cynthia Jowers of St. Louis, Mo., and Christy Jowers of Long View, Texas; 13 grandchildren and a host of other close relatives and friends.
LILA MAE DIXON
Funeral services for Lila Mae Dixon, 83, were held at 2 p. m. Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at Kay Branch Missionary Baptist Church. Burial followed in Greenlawn cemetery with services conducted by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mrs. Dixon died Thursday, Jan. 8, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Granitesville, to the late Will and Eva Miller. She was educated in the Aiken County public schools and was a member of Kay Branch Missionary Baptist Church.
Surviving are her daughter, Margie D. (Rickey) McDonald of Hartsville; one sister, Willie Bell (Louis) Brown of New York; one brother, William Miller of Granitesville; two grandchildren; two great–grandchildren; four step–grandchildren and a host of close relatives and friends.
KATHRYN E. GAUSE
LAKE CITY — Funeral services for Kathryn Epps Gause, 80, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Jan. 14, 2004, at Lake City United Methodist Church. Burial, for family only, will be in the St. Paul United Methodist Church cemetery in Coward, directed by Brockington Funeral Home of Lake City.
Mrs. Gause, widow of Rufus M. Gause, died Sunday, Jan. 11, in Charleston after an illness. She was born at McLeod Hospital in Florence, the daughter of the late Daniel and Ethel Fitch Epps. She graduated from Coker College in 1943 with a bachelor of arts in Latin. She was a Latin teacher in Lake City schools and a homemaker. She was a charter member of the Junior Sorosis Club founded in 1949 to promote knowledge of world affairs and foster the responsibilities of homemakers and good citizens. The State of South Carolina and Florence County recently recognized the charter members for 50 years of dedicated service, and the club is still active today. She was a member of the Lake City United Methodist Church and in Circle Three.
Survivors include one son, Kinney Gause of Beaufort; one daughter, Melanie G. Harris of Charleston; one granddaughter, Eliza Harris of Charleston; and two sisters, Dena Hucks of Hartsville and Sybil Swenson of Lake City.
