DARLINGTON — Graveside services for Creola Tedder Lloyd, 82, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery near Lydia, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington.
Mrs. Lloyd, widow of the late Chesley Lloyd, died Saturday, Jan. 10. She was born and raised in Darlington County, the daughter of the late Sam and Hannah Tedder. She was a member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son, Kenneth Dean Lloyd of Kelleytown; two daughters–in–law, Robin Winburn and Donna Griggs; and five grandchildren, Ashley, Brandy, Brooke, Taylor and Kory.
JAMES B. TALLON SR.
LAMAR — Funeral services for James Jimmy Tallon, 84, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 14, 2004, at Lamar First Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Lamar cemetery, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home of Lamar.
Mr. Tallon died Monday, Jan. 12. He was born in Sumter County, the son of the late Paul Kistler and Annie Laurie Gopfert Tallon. He served his county in the United States Army and was a member of the last division of the Horse Cavalry. Mr. Tallon was a member of the Lamar First Baptist Church where he taught the Senior Citizens Men's Class No. 1. He worked for the South Carolina Highway Department for many years before retiring in 1971. After his retirement, he became a teacher, having taught auto mechanics at the Darlington Career Center, Chesterfield–Marlboro Technical College and Florence–Darlington Technical College. Mr. Tallon was also a member of the Lamar American Legion Post 94. He loved his family, his friends and his church. He also enjoyed spending time at the Ponderosa where he raised his many animals.
Mr. Tallon was predeceased by his beloved wife of 62 years, Mrs. Meda Randolph Tallon.
Survivors include his son, James Bradley Tallon Jr. and Penny of Lynchburg; two daughters, Sara Ann and Charles Caban of Marietta, Ga., and Miriam and Bradley Swiler of Florence; one brother, William G. and Mary Tallon of Elgin; seven grandchildren and five great–grandchildren.

LONNIE PIERCE, JR.
FLORENCE — Funeral services for Lonnie Everett Buckshot Pierce Jr., 48, will be held at 12 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at New Providence Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. K. C. Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Florence National cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home, Inc.
Mr. Pierce died Friday, Jan. 9, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington, a son of Mary L. Parrott Pierce and the late Lonnie E. Pierce Sr. He was a graduate of W. C. Bryant High School in Queens, N.Y. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1977 and was honorably discharged in 1983. He received the First Good Conduct Award in 1981. At an early age, he was a member of New Providence Baptist Church. He was employed with DECC in Mechanicsburg, Pa., as a computer operator.
Survivors include his wife, Beatrice V. Pierce of the home; his mother, Mary L. Pierce of Darlington; a step–mother, Jessie M. Pierce of Darlington; a son, Lonnie E. Pierce III, of the home; a daughter, Tonya D. Pierce of Miami, Fla.; a step–daughter, Brenda V. Boston of the home; three sisters, Ernestine (Odell) Reuben of Sumter, Linda Pierce of Atlanta, Ga., and Gladys Pierce of Charlotte, N.C.; three brothers, Melvin (Carla) Pierce, James E. Pierce, both of Darlington, and Jeffrey (Murray) Pierce of Florence; a step–brother, Michael (Joyce) Everette of Darlington; five sisters–in–law, Geraldine (Lieutenant) Paige, Helen (Sherman) Black, Dorothy (Benjamin) McKinnie, Delores Chaney and Elnora Bowman, all of Washington, D.C.; two grandchildren, Brittny and Robeir Boston; a special aunt, Marie Bacote of Darlington; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family is receiving friends at the residence, 1519 Rocky Way Dr., Spaulding Heights Subdivision, Florence and the home of a brother, Melvin (Carla) Pierce of 424 Society Hill Road, Darlington.
BETTY JANE BIERER
COLUMBIA — Funeral services for Betty Jane Meares Bierer, 77, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at McBee Presbyterian Church in McBee with the Rev. Chris Denny officiating. Burial followed at 2 p.m. in Greenlawn Memorial Park cemetery in Columbia, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Bierer, widow of Dr. Bert W. Bierer, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Elihu and Annie Smith Meares. She was a graduate of McBee High School and Columbia College. She retired as a lab technician at Columbia Hospital after 30 years. She was devoted to her family and to her three dogs.
Surviving are her step–daughters, Patricia Bierer McAfee of Blythewood, Jo Ann Bierer Wilhelm of Summerville, Nancy V. Bierer Proveaux of Ridgeway; step–sons, Ronny Bierer of Kamiah, Idaho, Robert Bierer of Smyrna, Fla., Charles Edwards Bierer Hastings of Goleta, Calif., Walter S. Bierer of Blythewood; several nieces and nephews.
WILLIE LEE GRANT
Mr. Willie Lee Grant died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at McCoy's Nursing Facility in Bishopville. Funeral services will be held today, Jan. 14, 2004, at 3:30 p.m. in the Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Hartsville. The family will receive visitors at the residence at 535 Clyburn Circle.
Mr. Grant was born Dec. 20, 1930 in Darlington County, a son of the late Burt Grant Sr. and Cosie Grant. He was educated in the public schools of the county. He was employed with the DC Farmer's Market in Washington, D.C., for more than 20 years.
He is survived by two daughters, Rosa Lee Grant and Alfreida Grant, both of Bronx, N.Y.; a sister, Cynthia (Charles) Dickey of Hartsville; five grandchildren; three great–grandchildren and many other relatives and dear friends.
KENNETH L. TYNER
Memorial services for Kenneth Leon Tyner were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Johnny Tyner officiating. Memorials may be made to the Darlington Moose Lodge No. 595, PO Box 84, Darlington, SC 29532.
Mr. Tyner died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late John Lucas and Velma Gainey Tyner. He was a 21–year veteran in the U.S. Navy, a retired electrician and was a member of the Darlington Moose Lodge No. 595 where he was recognized for many outstanding services.
Surviving are his daughters and sons–in–law, Rita Faye Clifton of Lineville, Ala., Jerrie Gaye and Kenneth Whited of Ashland, Ala., Tammy Lynn and Khaled Elaggan of Hamburg, Pa.; sister, Dorothy Sue Lemmons; brother, Willie Tyner, both of Hartsville; 11 grandchildren; one great–grandchild; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his former wife, Jodene Smith Tyner, six brothers and two sisters.
MARION H. HILL
SOCIETY HILL — Funeral services for Marion Hersley Hill, 86, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at Welsh Neck Baptist Church with the Rev. Oscar Holland officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mr. Hill died Wednesday, Jan. 7. Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late Arthur and Cora Blackmon Hill. He was a member of Welsh Neck Baptist Church, an Army veteran of World War II and retired as a merchant and carpenter.
Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Nolan Hill of Society Hill; son, Marion H. Hill Jr. of Bennettsville; daughter and son–in–law, Patricia A. and Robert Wisniewski of Society Hill; sisters, Lois H. Ford of Florida, Bessie H. Hamilton of North Carolina; brother, Boyd Hill of Clio; four grandchildren; two great–grandchildren.
MARY DD MORGAN
Graveside services for Mary Deborah DD Chambers Morgan, 93, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at Magnolia cemetery. The Rev. Charles Roberts will officiate, and Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends this evening, Jan. 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the residence, 112 Church St.
Mrs. Morgan, widow of W. Howard Morgan Jr., died Tuesday, Jan. 13. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Tom Berry and Gertrude Grice Chambers. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She was a model in New York in several department stores and was an accomplished seamstress who made all of her children's clothes when they were young.
Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Dr. Woody H. and Sharon Morgan III of Hartsville; daughters and sons–in–law, Deborah M. and John Crawford of Hartsville, Gail M. and Maxie Cantley of Hartsville; sister, Erlene Shirley of Greenwood; brother, Bob Chambers; cousins, Eunice Ackerman, Buddy Felder; grandchildren, Jeannie C. Gainey, Bill Crawford, John Crawford, Julia Crawford, Jason Morgan, Howard Morgan, Ryan Morgan, Stacey Zack; and eight great–grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Tom Chambers.

Graveside services for Elizabeth Lib Henderson Howle, 75, will be held at 12 p.m. today, Jan. 9, 2004, at Magnolia cemetery. The Very Rev. Ted Duvall will officiate, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, 103 Campus Dr., Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mrs. Howle, who was marred for 44 years to Dan McIver Howle Sr., died Tuesday, Jan. 6. Born in Laurens, she was a daughter of the late Ludie Tom and Alta Clark Henderson. She was a member of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. She received her undergraduate degree from Coker College and her master's degree from Winthrop University. She taught History for 28 years at Hartsville High School.
Surviving are her son, Dan McIver Howle Jr. of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Beth (Doug) O'Hare of Burlington, N.C.; sister, Alice Hill of Mt. Pleasant; grandson, Dan McIver Howle III of Hartsville.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Henry Williams.
RONNIE A. COTTON
FLORENCE — Funeral services for Ronnie A. Cotton, 29, were held at 1 p.m Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, in Mitchell–Josey Funeral Chapel with Minister Jessie Mae Gandy officiating. Burial followed in the local cemetery.
Mr. Cotton died Sunday, Jan. 4, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Florence, a son of Patricia Ann Cotton and Ronnie Jones. He received his formal education in the Florence County public schools and worked various jobs. His last employment was at Fairfield Inn of Florence as a custodian.
Survivors include his parents, Patricia Ann Cotton of Florence and Ronnie Jones of New York; a sister, Wanda Cotton of Florence; three brothers, Thomas Cotton, Shedrick Williams and Roneverette Williams, all of Florence; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Dora Cotton of Florence and Jerome Cotton of Ohio; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Leta Wilder of Florence; maternal great–grandmother, Mrs. Dora Jones of Florence; one special aunt, Andrenia D. Taylor of Florence; two special uncles, James Cotton and Willie Cotton, both of Florence; other aunts and uncles; godparents, Leslie and Ann Gregg of Florence; nieces, nephews and cousins.
ALBERTA SMITH
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Alberta Berta Smith will be held at 12 p.m. today, Jan. 9, 2004, in Cherry Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the pastor, the Rev. Dr. E. B. Burroughs, officiating. Burial will follow in Palmetto Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mrs. Smith died Monday, Jan. 5, at her residence after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Joshua and Nancy Wright Smith and the step–daughter of the late Dunk Buster Jackson. She received her formal education in the Darlington County public schools. She was a life member of Palmetto Missionary Baptist Church where she was a past member of the choir. She worked various jobs.
Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Roberta Smith of the home; a son, Harold Joshua (Jackie) Smith of Lawton, Okla.; a sister, Mrs. Nancy Jackson of Bronx, N.Y.; two brothers, Sammie (Diane) Jackson of Norwalk, Conn., and Edward Jackson of Florida; five grandchildren, Avery Smith, Yvvey Daniels, Chamaul Smith, Demarta Smith; a great–grandson, Kai Daniels; two aunts, Mrs. Julia Hayes of Ansonia, Conn., and Mrs. Essie Lee Wright of New Haven, Conn.; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Brothers and sisters who preceded her in death are Margaret Hunter, Cathera Jackson, Willie Smith, Duncan Jackson and James Jackson.
The family is receiving friends at the residence at 2207 Boyd St., Darlington.
CHARLES D. SHEPHERD
FORT MILL — A graveside service to celebrate the life of Charles Dennis Shepherd was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Crown Memorial Park, officiated by the Rev. J. Grady Faulk and directed by Crown of Life Funeral and Cremation Service, Pineville, with Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home in charge of local announcements.
Mr. Shepherd died Tuesday, Jan. 6, at his residence. He was born on March 23, 1945, in Danville, Va. He was a member of Bass Masters, played short stop on the Danville Connie Mack Team that played in the World Series in 1962 and also played in three bands, the Imperials, the Majors and the Soul Masters in the 1960s. He was an avid golfer and fisherman, as well as a veteran of the United States Army.
Survivors include his wife, Cheryl DeBruhl Shepherd of Fort Mill; mother, Naomi Shepherd Hughes of Danville, Va.; one daughter, Kelly Shepherd of Concord, N.C.; one brother, Donald Shepherd and his wife, Joan, of Richmond, Va.; mother–in–law, Lorece Carnahan; two brothers–in–law, Ben DeBruhl and Butch DeBruhl, all of Hartsville; two grandchildren, Destin Shepherd and Learia Shepherd–Hicks.

MOULTRIE H. McINTOSH
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Services for the Rev. Moultrie H. McIntosh, 80, former rector of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in Hartsville, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Christ Church Cathedral in Lexington, Ky., with W. R. Milward Mortuary–Broadway in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to Christ Church Cathedral Garden Fund.
The Rev. McIntosh died Jan. 6, 2004, in Lexington.
Survivors include three children, John M. McIntosh, David C. McIntosh, both of Lexington, and Margaret E. McIntosh of Reno, Nev.; five grandchildren; and his former wife, Helen Churchill Wigginton McClure, all of Lexington.
