LILA DIXON

Lila Dixon, 83, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at 838 H Street, Hartsville.

LAVERNE R. WALTERS

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Laverne Raymond Walters, 61, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 9, 2004, at Love Life Ministries, conducted by Pastor Hazel Mixon and the Rev. Herbert Wells. Burial will follow in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.

Mr. Walters died Wednesday, Jan. 7, in a local hospital. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Burch Mitchell Walters and Virginia Atkinson Walters Lloyd. Mr. Walters was a truck driver. He was a race fan and enjoyed fishing and shopping at yard sales.

Mr. Walters was predeceased by a brother, Buster Lloyd, and a sister, Janie Anderson.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Clark Walters of the home; a daughter, Barbara (Tim) Atkinson of Darlington; five brothers, Heyward Walters, M.D. Walters, Bobby Lloyd, Jimmy Lloyd and Billy Lloyd; and six sisters, Doris Walters, Pat Cline, Betty Burr, Shirley Clark, Carolyn Hinson and Sandra Anderson.

REV. GEORGE HOLLIMON

The Rev. George Hollimon died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be handled by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Hartsville. The Hollimon Family will receive visitors at the residence at 120 Lawton Drive, Hartsville.

HENRY LEE

Funeral services for Henry Barker Lee, 76, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at the Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Dr. Jeri Parris Perkins will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery. The family will receive friends this evening, Jan. 9, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Hunley Commission, c/o Magnolia cemetery Trust, Box 6214, Charleston, SC 29405, or Edisto Island Presbyterian Church, Box 86, Edisto Island, SC 29438.

Mr. Lee, widower of Jeannine Berry Lee, died Wednesday, Jan. 7. Born in Summerville, he was a son of the late Randolph Broughton and Matilda Lee Lee. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He was retired from the U. S. Postal Service with 38 years of service and also was retired from the Hartsville Library. He was also employed with Quality Hardware and Florence Neurological Clinic.

Surviving are his daughter and son–in–law, Diana and Andy Gardner of Hartsville; sister, Frances L. Marvin of Greer; 10 nieces and nephews.

GERALD M. WELLMON

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Funeral services for Gerald M. Wellmon, 54, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at North Kannapolis United Methodist Church with the Rev. Susan German officiating. Interment was in Carolina Memorial Park, directed by Whitley's Funeral Home of Kannapolis, N.C.

Mr. Wellmon died Saturday, Jan. 3, at his home after a brief illness of two and a half months.

He was born Feb. 4, 1949, in Cabarrus County, N.C., the son of James Grady Welmmon and the late Juanita Ruff Wellmon. He was a self–employed painter/contractor for many years. He was a member of North Kannapolis United Methodist Church. Mr. Wellmon lived in this area most of his life and also lived in Texas for 20 years. He enjoyed raising Dachshunds.

Survivors are his wife, Rhonda Morgan Wellmon; one daughter, Angela Wellmon (Eddie) Tillman of Hartsville; three sons, Paul Robert Tucker of Kannapolis, N.C., Michael Todd (Stacie) Wellmon of Patrick and Justin Ray Wellmon of the home; his father, James Wellmon of Kannapolis, N.C.; one sister, Jeanne Tarlton of China Grove, N.C.; two brothers, Douglas Wellmon of Kannapolis, N.C., and Christopher Wellmon of Rockwell, N.C.; five grandchildren, Joey Brown, Brittany Brown, Haley Wellmon, Katlyn Wellmon and Dawson Wellmon; and two step–grandchildren, Jonathan Tiller and Eric Tiller.

Memorials may be made to North Kannapolis United Methodist Church, 1307 N. Main Street, Kannapolis, NC 28081.

TIMMY L. COLLINS

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Timmy L. Collins, 32, were held Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at Mechanicsville Baptist Church officiated by the Revs. Frankie Tanner and Howard Allen. Interment followed in the church cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Collins died Jan. 1, from injuries received in a vehicle accident. He was born in Florence County, son of Mary Filyaw Gainey and the late James Collins. He was employed by Nanya Plastics and Reliance Plumbing. He enjoyed golf and snow skiing and was a member of South Florence Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Arenda M. Collins of Florence; mother of Florence; step–father, Jerry Gainey of Florence; a son, Brandon Collins; and daughter, Jessica Collins, both of Darlington; brother, Wayne (Ashley) Collins of Timmonsville; two sisters, Wanda (Walter) Capps of Darlington and Lynn (Dean) Stone of Florence; also a number of nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Lauren Stone.

RUTH PERDUE

Graveside services for Ruth Smith Perdue, 72, were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Magnolia cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Lancaster officiating.

Mrs. Perdue died Tuesday, Dec. 31. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Luke and Katie Smith Gainey. She was a member of the Whispering Pines Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Judy Steen of Hartsville and Sharon Cross of Murrells Inlet; several grandchildren and great–grandchildren.

OTIS B. GAINEY

Funeral services for Otis B. Gainey, 77, were held at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Patrick Baptist Church with interment in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens in Cheraw. Services were directed by Miller–Rivers–Caulder Funeral Home of Chesterfield.

Mr. Gainey died Wednesday, Dec. 31. He was born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Walter Blease and Mary Jordan Gainey. He was a retired employee of Carolina Canners and a U.S. Army veteran. Mr. Gainey was a member of Patrick Baptist Church, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 47 and Woodmen of the World. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mittie Purvis Gainey, and by a son, Bobby Gainey.

Survivors include two sons, the Rev. Larry Gainey of Wallace and Otis Gainey Jr. of Chesterfield; two daughters, Patsy G. White of Patrick and Anita G. Hicks of Hartsville; one sister, Marie Tolson of Patrick; special friend, Grace Wallace of Cheraw; 14 grandchildren; 20 great–grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

WILLIAM McINVAILLE JR.

TAMPA, Fla. — William E. McInvaille Jr., 59, died suddenly of a heart attack in Tampa, Fla. on Dec. 25, 2003. Memorial services will be held in Waynesville and Tampa with arrangements under the direction of Trinity Memorial Gardens of New Port Richey, Fla.

Mr. McInvaille was the son of the late Louise M. and William E. McInvaille Sr. He was a graduate of Waynesville Township High School and obtained a bachelor's and master's degree from the University of South Florida and at the time of his death was assistant to the dean at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Fla.

Mr. McInvaille was predeceased by a sister, Sarah Anne Judy, his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Morrison, and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Levi McInvaille.

He is survived by a sister, Sandra Thatcher Rector of Odessa, Fla., and an aunt, Fannie Lee McInvaille Radford, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

ROBERT F. BONNOITT JR.

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Robert F. Bob Bonnoitt Jr., 64, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Jan. 7, 2004, at Trinity United Methodist Church, conducted by the Revs. Tim Rogers, Bob Stillwell and David Myers. Interment will follow in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.

Mr. Bonnoitt died Monday, Jan. 5, at his home in Pawleys Island after an extended illness. He was born and raised in Darlington County, the son of the late Robert E. and Mary Elizabeth Smith Bonnoitt. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Darlington for many years. He served his church in many capacities, having been past president of the Men's Club, a member of the John Wesley Sunday School Class and was past chairman of the Board of Stewards.

Mr. Bonnoitt was also very active in his community, having been a member of the Darlington Kiwanis Club and a board member for the Darlington Downtown Revitalization Association. He served on the board of Darlington County Habitat for Humanity and the Board of Directors for the Billie Hardee Home for Boys.

Prior to his retirement, he was the owner of Bonnoitt's Feed and Seed in Darlington. Through his work he was a member of many associations and was the past president of the National Cotton Council.

Outside of his church, community and work, he enjoyed the outdoors, having been a member of Damon Hunting Club for years, and he enjoyed the company of his close friends, having been the past president of the Sock and Supper Club. He enjoyed woodworking and spending time at his beloved Pawleys Island.

Survivors include his wife, Johnnie Ward Bonnoitt of the home; three daughters, Mary (Jody) Kelley of Darlington, Robin Bonnoitt Forstrom of Pawleys Island and Emily (John) Lee of Fort Mill; two sisters, Annie Laura Boatwright of Johnston and Betty Jean Bonnoitt Sivas of Augusta, Ga.; five grandchildren, John, Elizabeth, Davis, Erin and Duncan.

The family suggests memorials be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, PO Box 16, Darlington, SC 29540 or to the Tidelands Community Hospice, 2591 N. Fraser St., Georgetown, SC 29440–6411.

EUGENE MURRAY

Funeral services for Eugene Murray, 50, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at New Market United Methodist Church with the Revs. Philip Watry and Tommy Browne officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mr. Murray died Saturday, Jan. 3. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Gay Nell Marshall Murray and the late W. R. Murray. He was employed with A.O. Smith, was a member of New Market United Methodist Church where he served as a Trustee and a member of the Men's Club of the church.

Surviving are his wife, Lisa Caddell Murray of Hartsville; his mother of Hartsville; daughter, Jennifer Brooke Murray, also of Hartsville; three sisters, Janice Tart of Dunn, N.C., Margaret Newland of Hartsville and Madline Braxton of Alcolu.

GRACE W. ADAMS

DILLON — Funeral services for Grace Weatherly Adams, 90, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, in Reedy Creek Presbyterian Church with burial in Alford cemetery, directed by Cooper Funeral Home.

Mrs. Adams, widow of Joe Charles Adams, died Sunday, Jan. 4, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. Born in Dillon County on July 5, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Thaddeus Weatherly and Mary Frances Alford Weatherly of the Ready Creek community in Dillon County. She was a member of Reedy Creek Presbyterian Church and a district chairman in the Pee Dee Presbyterian Women of the Church.

Mrs. Adams graduated from Queens College in Charlotte, N.C., with a bachelor of arts degree. She received a master's degree in education from Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., and did further study at the University of South Carolina. She held positions for 40 years in the schools of South Carolina as a classroom teacher, reading supervisor, and a principal. While living in Conway, Mrs. Adams was charter member and the second president of the Conway Business and Professional Women's Club. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and served as vice president of the Omicron Chapter, later becoming a charter member of the Alpha Lambde Chapter. She served as president of the Dillon County Retired Teachers Organization. She was a member of the Papyrus Book Club and served as vice president and president. She was a member of the Women's Club of the Mintum community.

Mrs. Adams was preceded in death by her sisters, Annie Weatherly, Isla W. Southerland, Myrtle W. Carmichael and Bessie Weatherly, and her brothers, Daniel M. Weatherly, Thaddeus Weatherly Jr. and James W. Weatherly.

She is survived by her nieces and nephews, John Thad and Marguerite Southerland of St. Matthews, Thomas M. and Norma Southerland of North Charleston, Ann Weatherly of Latta, Dana W. and David Russell of Hartsville, Carson and Rosemary Carmichael of Garner, N.C., John D. and Patricia Carmichael of Latta, Frances Weatherly Hayes of Dillon, Claudia V. Carmichael of Latta and Lutie Allen Weatherly of Mintum, S.C. She is also survived by several great and great–great–grand–nieces and nephews.

DAVID HOPKINS

Funeral services for David Brantley Red Hopkins, 67, were held at 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge with the Rev. Billy Campbell officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Hopkins died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late David Brock and Eadie Bell Hall Hopkins. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge.

Surviving are his sisters and brother–in–law, Sandra Faye Hopkins of Hartsville, Sharon and Terry Matheny of Florence; brothers and sisters–in–law, Brockie Hopkins Jr. of Hartsville, H. R. Pete and Carolyn Hopkins of Hartsville, Theodore Punk Hopkins of Hartsville, Laharve Bud Hopkins of Hartsville and William E. and Sarah Hopkins of Union. He was preceded in death by his sister, Ida Mae Hopkins.
