NINA HOLLOMAN

Funeral services for Nina Ruth Grantham Holloman, 82, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dave Worthington officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery.

Mrs. Holloman, widow of Roosevelt Pearson Holloman, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Paul Felder and Leitha Caddell Grantham. She was a member of South Hartsville Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son, Paul Jeremiah Holloman of Hartsville; daughters, Linda Holloman Russell of Hartsville, Judy Ruth Quick of Hartsville, Pam Holloman Smith of Hartsville; grandchildren, Jerry Holloman, Jason Holloman, Ashleigh Quick, Champ Quick; and seven great–grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son Rudy Holloman and her daughter Saundra Holder.

EILEEN GAINEY

Funeral services for Eileen Drye Gainey, 80, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at West Hartsville Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Sullivan officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Mrs. Gainey, widow of Bryce Gainey, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004. Born in Stanley County, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Robert and Greta Gilmore Drye. She was a member of West Hartsville Baptist Church.

Surviving are her daughters and son–in–law, Debbie Churchwell of Atlanta, Ga., Renee and Mike Smith of Hartsville, Cindy Baumgardner of Orlando, Fla., Greta Gainey of Oahu, Hawaii; sister, Hazel Townsend of Albemarle, N.C.; grandchildren, Brett Churchwell, Byron Churchwell, Megan Smith, James Smith, Jason Baumgardner, Blake Smith, Rebecca Smith; great–grandchild, Chloe Churchwell.

HARRY CALDER

Mr. Harry Lee Calder, 78, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Mr. Calder was born in Sumter County, a son of the late Robert A. and Bessie Benton Calder. He served in World War II in the United States Naval Air Corps and was a lifetime member of the Hartsville Masonic Lodge No. 173.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Peggy Sing Calder of Hartsville; daughters and sons–in–law, Rebecca C. and Dave Davis of Blythewood, Lori Calder–Freeman and Pete Freeman of Darlington; sister, BerNelle Beckham of Hartsville; brother and sister–in–law, Kenneth and Marion Calder of Summerville; grandson, Brennan Davis of Blythewood.

STEVE HOWLE

Funeral services for Steve Evander Howle, 87, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at Mount Olivet Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary Wells officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Howle died Friday, Jan. 2. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Boyd and Hattie Hawkins Howle. He was a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church and was a retired farmer.

Surviving are his wife, Nellie Edwards Howle of Society Hill; sons and daughter–in–law, Bud and Patricia Howle of Cheraw, Phillip Howle of Cheraw, Joe Howle of Hartsville; daughters and sons–in–law, Ethel Byrd of Hartsville, Carolyn and Don Huggins of Hartsville, Jane and Ricky Huggins of Hartsville, Judy and Edwin Weatherford of Darlington; 21 grandchildren; 19 great–grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughters, Christolas Myers and Linda Weatherford.

WALLACE GIBSON

Funeral services for Leland Wallace Gibson Jr., 62, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at West Hartsville Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Sullivan officiating. Burial followed in Westview Memorial Park cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to West Hartsville Baptist Church Building Fund, 1003 W. Carolina Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mr. Gibson died Wednesday, Dec. 31. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of Christine Price Gibson and the late Leland Wallace Gibson Sr. He was a charter member of West Hartsville Baptist Church. He served in the U. S. Air Force, was retired from Sonoco Products Company with 37 years of service and was a member of the Old Timers Club. He was an avid outdoorsman, spending a lot of his time hunting and fishing.

Wallace was loved and respected by all who knew him. He was so many things in one tidy package, a loving and thoughtful husband, a stern but compassionate father, a dedicated son, a welcoming father–in–law, a beloved brother and a wonderful grandfather. He could always brighten your day with one of his smiles or his quick sense of humor. He was the center of our family. Our comfort, our hope, our joy, and our greatest love. Even though he was taken from us too soon, we have wonderful, loving memories to sustain us during these difficult days.

Surviving are his wife, Vickie Gibson of Hartsville; son and daughter–in–law, Trey and Robin Gibson of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Shelly and Bryan Hatchell of Elgin; mother of Hartsville; sister and brother–in–law, Carol and Gerald Baine of Goldsboro, N.C.; brother and sister–in–law, Mike and Carol Gibson of Hartsville; grandchildren, Delia Hatchell, Sarah Hatchell and Andrew Hatchell.

TEBELLE B. SINCLAIR

McBEE — Funeral services for Tebelle Blackmon Sinclair, 85, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at Galilee Baptist Church with burial in Pines Forest cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Sinclair died Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Alexander and Nealy Clyburn Blackmon. She received her education in Chesterfield County public schools and was a member of Galilee Baptist Church.

Surviving are a sister, Catherine Blackmon Chaplin of McBee; a special niece, Ruth Blackwell of McBee; two special grand–nieces, Emma Jean Stalling and Randolf Williams, both of Darlington, and other nieces, nephews and grand–nieces.

LOUIS JOWERS

JEFFERSON — Louis Jowers, 72, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

TROY ROGERS JR.

Funeral services for Troy Rogers Jr., 58, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Praise Temple Church. Burial will be in New Providence Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mr. Rogers died Monday, Jan. 5. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Troy Rogers Sr. and Janie Steven Rogers. He was a member of Twitty United Methodist Church and was a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Surviving are his wife, Jessie Louise Ballard Rogers of Hartsville; daughter, Ginger (George) Green of Hartsville; grandson, George (G.G.) Green IV, of Hartsville; two sisters, Grace McCarn of Stanley, N.C., and Myrtleen Tyner of Hartsville; and nieces and nephews.

MELISSA WATFORD

LAMAR — Funeral services for Lilly Melissa Knotts Watford were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home, Lamar, with interment following in Lamar Memorial cemetery. Pallbearers were Timothy Jr. and Todd Kirven, Brian Bradt, Daniel Watford, Joe Stephens and Jay Watford.

Mrs. Watford died Sunday, Jan. 4, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after a long illness. She was born in Darlington County on April 9, 1916, the daughter of the late Ephpriam Sylvester and Maggie Knotts. She was the widow of Elbert W. Watford of Lamar. She was a loving mother and cherished grandmother. Mrs. Watford was a member of the Lamar United Methodist Church.

Survivors are twin sons, Jake (Terry) Watford of Bishopville and Jerry (Rose) Watford of Florence; two daughters, Debra W. (Timmy) Kirven of St. Charles and Mrs. Jean W. Peake of Oates; 12 grandchildren; 15 great–grandchildren; one great–great–grandson and two sisters, Edna K. Jefferson and Martha K. Gandy, both of Hartsville.

Mrs. Watford was preceded in death by her brothers, Lloyd, Jerald, Wesley, Marion and Melvin Knotts, and son–in–law, Richard Peake, all of Lamar.

Memorials are suggested to the charity of one's choice.

JAMES M. HALL SR.

Graveside services for James Matthew Hall Sr., 75, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Norton Funeral Home with the Revs. Randy Jackson and Timothy Cole officiating.

Mr. Hall died Sunday, March 28. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Ed and Bessie Watkins Hall. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Katie Steen Hall of Hartsville; three sons, Steve Hall of Hartsville, James M. Hall Jr. of Sumter and Jason Hall of Spartanburg.; three grandchildren; five great–grandchildren.

Mr. Hall was preceded in death by a son, Ralph David Hall, and a daughter, Devonah Gayle Hall.

MARY WILLIAMSON

DARLINGTON — Graveside funeral services for Mary McDowell Williamson, 86, were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 2004, in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Williamson, widow of Ford W. Williamson, died Thursday, March 25, in a Florence hospital. She was born in Greenville, daughter of the late John L. and Eula Helems McDowell. She retired as a nutritionist with Clemson Extension Center and was a member of Mont Clare Baptist Church. She was the loving mother of six children.

Surviving are a son, Walker Williamson of Darlington; five daughters, Eugenia Jean (Robert) Callahan of Savannah, Ga., Sylvia (Clyde) Lane of Columbia, Judy (Charles) Blackmon of Darlington, Rose (Sidney) Howell of Latta and Linda W. Murray of Florence; also 12 grandchildren; 16 great–grandchildren and a nephew, John Stevenson.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth McDowell Stevenson.

Memorials are suggested to Mont Clare Baptist Church, 1632 Mont Clare Road, Darlington, SC 29540 or to the charity of one's choice.

EARNEST JACKSON

Graveside services for Earnest Daniel Jackson Sr., 68, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Florence National cemetery. The Rev. Gary Anderson will officiate and Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends this evening, March 31, from 5 to 7 at the residence, 121 Bel Aire Circle. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia SC 29210.

Mr. Jackson died Monday, March 29, 2004. Born in Mountain View, Mo., he was a son of the late Kenneth Wayne and Pearlie Moore Jackson. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a technical sergeant, serving in Vietnam, Korea, England, Germany and stateside.

Surviving are his wife, Joan Locke Jackson of Hartsville; sons, Earnest Jackson Jr. of Summerville, Wayne Jackson of Hartsville; daughters and son–in–law, Karen and Rick Smith and Brenda Jackson, all of Hartsville; brother and sisters–in–law, Joseph and Sharon Jackson of Alton, Ill., Thelma Jackson of McRae, Ark.; sister, Angela Baughn of Mountain View, Mo.; five grandchildren and one great–grandchild. He was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth Jackson.

AL MARSHALL

Al Grubby Marshall, 52, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004. Funeral plans will be announced later by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

BERT HERRING SR.

Funeral services for Thomas Bert Herring Sr., 73, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 28, 2004, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Robert Cline officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 104 East Home Ave., Hartsville SC 29550.

Mr. Herring died Thursday, March 25, 2004. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Bertus and Essie Smith Herring. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and Sunday school director. He was employed with Sonoco Products Company for 43 years.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Reaves Herring of Hartsville; sons and daughters–in–law, Bert and Cherie Herring of Columbia, Bryan and Cindy Herring of Lexington, Brad and Beth Herring of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Beth H. and Charlie Rambo of Florence; sister, Annie Louise Shealy of Gaffney; brother, Bryant Herring of White Oak, N.C.; grandchildren, Steven Stuber, Elizabeth Stuber, Parker Marie Herring, Catherine Herring, Maggie Herring, Robert Herring, Emily Herring, Sarabeth Herring and Caroline Herring.
