Graveside services for Eddie Blayne Duck Cauthen, 77, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 14, 2004, in Magnolia cemetery with the Revs. Paul Sullivan and Dr. Luke King officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the West Hartsville Baptist Church, 1003 W. Carolina Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mr. Cauthen died Friday, March 12, 2004. Born in Greensboro, N.C., he was a son of the late Robert C. and Elizabeth Blake Cauthen. He was a charter member of West Hartsville Baptist Church. He was a decorated Army Ranger in World War II, was retired from Columbia Machines and was a member of the Hartsville Masonic Lodge No. 173.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Jean King Cauthen of Myrtle Beach; daughters and son–in–law, Janet and Guy Webb of Orlando, Fla., and Sharon Cunningham of Myrtle Beach; brother, Jimmy Cauthen of Clermont, Fla.; grandchildren, Maggie Cunningham, Hannah Cunningham, Edward Preston Webb and Elizabeth Webb.
A.B. DAILEY
SOCIETY HILL — Ase Berry A.B. Dailey Jr., 86, died Monday, March 15, 2004, in a Florence hospital. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today, March 17, at Welsh Neck Baptist Church, with interment following in the church cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Dailey was born in Marlboro County, son of the late Ase Berry and Effie Donaldson Dailey. He was bookkeeper for Georgia Carolina Brick and Tile and then entered the lumber business from 1943 to 1963. He went to work for Burlington Industries and retired as Environmental and Utilities Supervisor in 1980. Mr. Dailey served as clients services consultant with Moore Gardner Engineers of Asheboro, N.C., for two years. An active member of Welsh Neck Baptist Church, Mr. Dailey served as Sunday school teacher, general superintendent of Sunday school and deacon. He took on the responsibility of the church cemetery and organized the perpetual care. During a period of 20 years, Mr. Dailey served the Town of Society Hill as a council member, mayor pro tem and mayor. He also served one term as magistrate. He enjoyed fishing.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia Chapman Dailey of Society Hill; his daughter, Wanda Dailey Keith, also of Society Hill; his granddaughter, Virginia Dawn (Jamey) Hunsucker of Society Hill and great–grandson, Justin Tyler Lane; also, his brother, George (Henrietta) Dailey of Sumter and his sister, Lorene Dailey Streater of Morven, N.C.

WILLIAM F. PETE FOLSOM
HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. — William F. Pete Folsom, 95, of Hendersonville, N.C. died Sunday, March 14, 2004.
Funeral services will be held at ll a.m. today, March 17, at Thos Shephard & Son Funeral Directors in Hendersonville.
Pallbearers will be John W. Folsom, George A. Folsom, Frederick Crawford, John Joyeusaz, Richard Joyeusaz, Richard Stanland, Sean Y. Griffin and Ralph Livingston Jr. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. James Episcopal Church, 766 N. Main St., Hendersonville, NC 28792, or the donor's favorite charity.
A native of Hartsville, Mr. Folsom had lived in Henderson County since 1947. He was a son of the late Willie A. and Flora Newsom Folsom and was the husband of the late Helen Harris Folsom, who died in 1996. He was also preceded in death by four sisters, Blanche Folsom Young, Lois Folsom Livingston, Elizabeth Folsom Crawford and Billie Folsom Gantz.
Mr. Folsom attended Clemson University and was the former owner of Folsom Motor Company, the Chrysler, Dodge Plymouth automobile dealership in Hendersonville, for 25 years. He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church and served with 6th Air Force during World War II. Following the war, he taught cadets at Montana State College for two years. He was former Chairman of the Board for the local district of Wachovia Bank for 15 years and was also chairman of the ABC Board for 15 years.
Survivors include his brother, John Roy Folsom of Columbia, and several nieces and nephews.
LULA DRAKEWOOD
Mrs. Lula Drakewood died Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at Morrell Memorial Convalescent Center. Funeral plans are incomplete and will be announced by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. The Drakewood family will receive visitors at the residence at 405 Centerville Road, Hartsville.
JOHN ASKINS SR.
Funeral services for John Thomas Askins Sr., 90, will be held at 2 p.m. today, March 17, 2004, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Dr. Bob Cline will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves, Florence, SC 29506.
Mr. Askins, widower of Alice Stuart Askins, died Sunday, March 14. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Minto Kelly and Sarah Johnson Askins. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He was a Southern gentleman who resided in Hartsville for more than 90 years. He was a walking, talking history book of early Hartsville until the present, with an unending collection of stories from the old days. He had many talents and diversified interests, among those were a penchant for antique cars and furniture. He was also a very gifted taxidermist. His family and friends always came first, as he was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather.
Surviving are his son and daughter–in–law, John T. and Debbie Askins Jr. of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Sarah Alice and Dr. Herbert House of Burlington, N.C.; brother, the Rev. W. F. Askins of Fuquay–Varina, N.C.; grandchildren, Rebecca A. Askins of Columbia, Ronald E. King Jr. of the U.S. Navy, Devida King of Darlington. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Marion Askins, Robin Askins, Andrew Askins and granddaughters, Amanda Lynn Askins, Bonnie Alice House.
LEOLA DIXON TYNER
Funeral services for Leola Hall Dixon Tyner, 63, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 18, 2004, at Pine Church of God of Prophecy. The Revs. Marvin Griggs and Jimmy Jeffords will officiate with burial in Center Point cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends today, March 17, at the residence, 828 East Home Avenue, Hartsville.
Mrs. Tyner died Monday, March 15. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Silas and Rosalee Odom Hall.
Surviving are her sons, Earl Dixon Jr. of Florence and Julius Dixon Jr. of Hartsville; daughters and son–in–law, Betty Johnson, Lori and Richard Clark, Melissa Spires, Thelma Alexander, all of Hartsville; sisters, Violet Moore, Claire Poe, both of Hartsville, Betty Jean Steen of Orangeburg; brothers, Timmon Hall, Byerly Hall, Silas Hall, George Thomas Hall, all of Hartsville, Melvin Kirby Hall of China Grove, N.C., James Dancer Hall of Rockwell, N.C.; 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter Tonya Clark.

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Anthony Robert Robbie Mooring, 26, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. John Stevens, Leroy B. Lowery and Hazel Mixon officiating. Burial followed in Liberty Hill Baptist Church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mr. Mooring died Sunday, March 14. Born in Pitt County, N.C., he was a son of Dianne Thigpen Mooring Ver Vaecke and the late Anthony Lee Mooring. He was the owner of Bulldog Builders, formerly Handy–Andy & Sons.
Surviving are his wife, Selena Beasley Mooring of Darlington; mother, of Raleigh, N.C.; daughter, Kathryn Bailee Mooring of Darlington; sister and brother–in–law, Tracie M. and Jason McCoy of Columbia; step–mother, Dana Mooring of Lamar; father–in–law and mother–in–law, Terry S. and Judy L. Beasley of Hartsville; step–father, Jim Ver Vaecke
of Raleigh, N.C.; step–brother, Jimmy Ver Vaecke of Durham, N.C.; step–sister, Dottie Ver Vaecke of Asheville, N.C.; maternal grandparents, Winzell and Della Thigpen of Kinston, N.C.; maternal great–grandmother, Helen Spence of Kinston, N.C.; niece, Elizabeth Paige McCoy.
CARRIE ROBINSON
DARLINGTON — Funeral service for Carrie Bell James Robinson of Darlington will be held at l p.m. Thursday, March 18, 2004, in Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. P. W. Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Darlington Memorial cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home, Inc.
Mrs. Robinson died Wednesday, March 10, in a local nursing home after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Ervin and Beulah Samuel James.
She was a graduate of Mayo High School. At an early age, she attended Lawson Grove Baptist Church. As a young adult, she made her home in Middletown, Conn., where she worked at Connecticut Valley Hospital for 23 years as a nurse's assistant. After retiring in 1972, she returned to Darlington.
Survivors include five children, Lottie (Fred) Grant of Middletown, Conn., Melik (Adruanne) Burch of Harlem, N.Y., Janie Burch of New York, Jeanette Robinson of Florence and Joseph (Hazelnette) Robinson of Detroit, Mich.; 13 grandchildren; six great–grandsons; four sisters, Doris (Charles) Hammonds, Hattie (Nathaniel) Murray, both of Darlington, Carolyn Jackson of New Britain, Conn., and Trannie Dubose of Albany, N.Y.; five brothers, Cornell (Lillie Mae) James, Ulysses (Willie Mae) James, both of Darlington, Ervin (Bertha) James Jr. of Whiteville, N.C., Dewey (Inez) James and Roosevelt (Betty) James both of Middletown, Conn.; a host of nieces and nephews.
A son, Mark Robinson, preceded her in death.
The family is receiving friends at the home of a sister and brother.
DELORIS SAWYER
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Deloris Jackson Sawyer were held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 15, 2004, at Lee Street Church of God with the Rev. Howard K. Hammond officiating.
Mrs. Sawyer, widow of Curtis Sawyer Jr., died Thursday, March 11, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born in Darlington, a daughter of the late Lemon and Mary Samuel Jackson Sr.
She was a graduate of Mayo High School and continued her education at Benedict College in Columbia, where she received a B.A. degree in elementary education. She was a member of the Lee Street Church of God, where she served as superintendent of the Church School Department, assistant secretary of the Flower Club, Youth Department Leader, a member of the Women of the Church of God, the Usher Board, the Chorus Choir, the Church Council and the State Christian Board of Education.
Her teaching career began in the Florence County School District at North Vista Elementary and later continued in the Darlington County School District at Brockington and Pate Elementary Schools. She retired after 30 years of service.
Survivors include seven children, Linda (Henry) Dowling of Darlington, Raeford (Paula) Sawyer of Cary, N.C., Marshall (Delma) Sawyer of Columbia, Curtis Sawyer and Mary Carol (Vincent) Chaplin both of Charlotte, N.C., the Rev. Jacqueline Sawyer of Upper Marlboro, Md., and Vernon (Belva) Sawyer of Florence; six grandchildren, Jeffery and Patrick Dowling, Travis, Kayla, Phillip and Christopher Sawyer; a brother, Lemon Jackson Jr. of Trenton, N.J.; two brothers–in–law and three sisters–in–law.
SAMUEL A. GANDY FOLSOM
BENNETTSVILLE — Funeral services for Samuel Alexander Gandy, 85, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at Kiser Funeral Home of Cheraw with burial following in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Gandy died Saturday, March 13. Born in Society Hill, he was a son of the late Robert Manuel and Sallie Vista Linton Gandy. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Bennettsville. Mr. Gandy was a U.S. Navy veteran having served in World War II as a seaman first class. He received the American Area Camp Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He enjoyed woodworking.
Surviving are his wife, Vera E. Smith of Bennettsville; sons, Samuel A. Chic Gandy Player and Wayne A. Gandy, both of Bennettsville, and James Deese of Tucson, Ariz.; daughters, Joyce McLendon of Bennettsville and Betty Boan of Cheraw; brothers, Brooks Edward Gandy of Darlington and Harvey Gandy of Society Hill; sisters, Catherine Hall and Myrtle Keith of Society Hill; 19 grandchildren and 17 great–grandchildren.
Mr. Gandy was also preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Manuel Gandy Jr. and Charles Gandy.

MARY H. COX TALLON
ELGIN — Mary H. Cox Tallon died Satruday morning, March 13, 2004, at her residence after a long illness with family at her side. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 16, in Belk Funeral Home, Lamar Chapel, with interment following in Lamar cemetery, officiated by the Revs. Bruce Watford and Matt Galloway.
Mrs. Tallon was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late James Coit and Myrtle DuBose Hill. She was a retired Civil Service employee having served as a manager of AAFES in Germany and various parts of the United States. Presently, she was a member of Lugoff Friendship Baptist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Tallon is survived by a husband, William G. (Billy) Tallon; three daughters, Carolyn H. Caul of Phenix City, Ala., Yvonne (Gary) Carter of Lake Mary, Fla., and Mary H. Huff of Dadeville, Ala.; two step–daughters, Judi (Robin) Dehart and Vikki Rudloff of Texas; five grandchildren; five step–grandchildren; four great–grandchildren; a sister, Katherine H. Amerson of Lamar; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Benny Hill.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, 950 48th Ave., Myrtle Beach, SC 29575.
HELEN COTTON
DOVESVILLE — Funeral services for Helen Cotton, 67, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 13, 2004, at the St. James Holiness Church in Society Hill. Burial will be in Bethesda Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Ms. Cotton died Tuesday, March 9, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Ben and Emmie Richardson Cotton. She was educated in the Darlington County public school system. She joined Bethesda Baptist Church at an early age.
Surviving are three sisters, Rose Cotton, Almeta Sims and Ellen Kennedy, all of Darlington.
