Funeral services for James Davis Sr., 64, will be held at 3 p.m. today, March 12, 2004, at the Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Davis died Monday, March 8, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Lee County, a son of the late Johnny and Lillie Mae Blandshaw Givens. He received his education in the Darlington and Lee County public school systems. He also attended Ebenezer United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sons, James Davis Jr. of Queens, N.Y., and Johnny Davis of Hampton, Va.; one daughter, Mary L. Davis of Greenville; one sister, Dorothy Henderson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one granddaughter, Jalise R. Davis of Virginia Beach, Va., and a host of aunts, cousins and other close relatives.
FRANCES M. NICHOL
MORVEN, N.C. — Funeral services for Frances Louisa (Cissy) Morris Nichol, 57, will be held at 10 a.m. today, March 12, 2004, at Grace United Methodist Church in Manassas, Va. Local services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, March 14, at the Sandy Plains United Methodist Church, near Morven, N.C., with interment following in Anson Memorial Park in Wadesboro, N.C., directed by Leavitt Funeral Home. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service.
Mrs. Nichol died Tuesday, March 8, at her home following a five–year battle of breast cancer. She was born in Hartsville, but grew up in Morven, N.C. She was the daughter of the late Boggan Morris and Lilly Mae Atkinson Morris. She graduated from Morven High School in 1964 and while in school worked part–time jobs for Winn–Dixie Grocery and JP Steen Finishing in Cheraw.
Mrs. Nichol planned her career carefully and received he Bachelor of Arts (1972) from Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, N.C., majoring in English literature. She completed her Master of Arts (1974) at Winthrop University at Rock Hill, majoring in English literature. In 1983, she received her Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Maryland at College Park, Md., specializing in English Literature.
After retiring as a teacher, she worked independently as a realtor with Samson Realty of Chantilly, Va. As an agent there, she was top producer and was a member of the million dollar club, a member of the National Board of Realtors, a member of the Virginia Board of Realtors and a member of the Prince William County Board of Realtors.
Mrs. Nichol taught at the university level for 25 years at Howard University, Queens College and Rutledge College. She won several teaching awards and commendations. Her professional affiliations included Faulkner Conference, American Literature Conference, Conference of College Composition and Communications, Sigma Tau Delta Honor Society, The Modern Language Association and the National Council of Teachers of English. Publications to her credit include Flem Snopes' Knack for Verisimilitude of the Snopes Trilogy, Mississippi Quarterly, and other academic publications.
Mrs. Nichol is survived by her husband, Dr. James P. Nichol; and their son, Justin, of the home; her uncles, Fred Atkinson of Cheraw and W. T. Frazier of Charlotte, N.C.; aunts, Elsie Morris of New London, N.C., and Myrtle Morris of Wadesboro, N.C., and numerous cousins.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, John and Rose Morris of Morven, N.C., and maternal grandparents, John F. and Louise Atkinson of Hartsville.

ELIZABETH H. BELL
LAMAR — Funeral services for Elizabeth Hudson Bell, 87, were held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 6, 2004, at Belk Funeral Home, Lamar Chapel. Interment followed in Mt. Pleasant cemetery.
Mrs. Bell died Thursday night, March 4, in a local nursing home. She was born in Fairfield County, daughter of the late Robert H. and Lola Kelly Hudson, and was married
to the late M. J. Bell. She was a member of the Eastern Star until the time of her illness, and loved flowers and working in the gardening shop. Mrs. Bell was of the Presbyterian faith.
Surviving are a daughter and son–in–law, Betty (Pete) Bell of Lamar and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Bell was preceded in death by a sister, Lois Boyce, and three brothers, Louie Hudson, Woodrow Hudson and Billy Hudson.
JIMMY WILLIAMSON
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Jimmy Toad Williamson were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 7, 2004, in Flat Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. M. A. McMillan Sr. officiating. Burial followed in Round O Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. Williamson died Thursday morning, March 4, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Sylvester and Lugenia Samuel Williamson. He received his formal education in the Darlington County public schools and at an early age attended Flat Creek Baptist Church. He lived in New York City for a number of years where he was gainfully employed, and after retirement he returned to Darlington in 1994.
Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Mrs. Willie Louise Sister Williamson of the home; a daughter, Nancy Williamson; two grandchildren, Redell and Michael Williamson, all of the home; six sisters, Lottie (Robert) Tedder of Society Hill, Lugenia (Charles) Timmons, Margaret Williamson, Dorothy Coleman, all of Darlington, Rosetta Harris and Mary Miller, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; seven brothers, Walter (Lizzie) Williamson, Solomon (Maryann) Williamson, Richard Williamson, all of Darlington, Charlie (Sallie) Williamson of Winston Salem, N.C., Albert (Maggie) Williamson, Nathaniel Williamson, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Willie Jackson of Fayetteville, N.C.; an aunt, Mrs. Annie Mae McCall; his father–in–law, Ervin Williamson; four brothers–in–law, a special family member, Mrs. Viola (Walter) Williamson; a devoted nephew, Emmanuel (Cora) Williamson; several other nieces and nephews.
Those who preceded him in death were, two brothers, Sylvester Bones Williamson, Cephus Mumford; two sisters, Estella and Thelma; and a child he reared as his own, Willie Wingate.
DEBORAH BRISBON
PATERSON, N.J. — Funeral services for Deborah Brisbon, 47, formerly of Hartsville, were held at Community Baptist Church of Love in Paterson, N.J. Burial followed in the East Ridgeland cemetery, directed by LaGarde Funeral Home, with Young & Young Funeral Home in charge of local announcements.
Mrs. Brisbon died Thursday, Feb. 26. She was born in Lee County, a daughter of the late Charlie and Lillie Moses Brisbon. She received her education in the public schools of South Carolina. She was employed with Hudson United Bank.
Surviving are three sons, DeShon (Danielle) Brisbon, Kejuan Brisbon, and Shamar Brisbon, all of Paterson, N.J.; two daughters, Catrina Brisbon and Shawntel Brisbon, both of Paterson, N.J.; three sisters, Louise Brisbon of Paterson, N.J.; Barbara Ann Brisbon and Melissa (Osmon) Sabari, all of Hartsville; four brothers, Charles Brisbon of Hartsville, James (Debbie) Brisbon, Ernest Brisbon, and Ricky (Melanie) Brisbon, all of Georgia; a longtime companion, Theodore Motley; three grandchildren, and a host of other close relatives and friends.
HOWARD W. CHAPMAN
SOCIETY HILL — Funeral services for Howard W. Chapman, 61, will be held at 3 p.m. today, March 10, 2004, at Welsh Neck Baptist Church with the Revs. Oscar Holland and Marvin Lynch officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville Chapel.
Mr. Chapman died Monday, March 8. He was born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Monroe C. and Gertrude Everleigh Chapman. He was owner of Chapman Appliance Repair & Service, a member of Welsh Neck Baptist Church, served as a deacon and served as chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee.
Surviving are his wife, Jackie Dixon Chapman; daughter, Denise (Mitch) Spease; granddaughter, Amber Spease, all of Society Hill; brothers, Clarence Chapman of Lexington, Leon Chapman of Society Hill and Walter Chapman of Summerville; two sisters, Betty Lou West of Moncks Corner and Dorothy Shepherd of West Columbia.

JOHN CRAWFORD
Memorial services for John Thornton Snookie Crawford, 71, were held at 3 p.m. Monday, March 8, 2004, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Painter officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Darlington County Humane Society, Box 1655, Hartsville SC 29551 or the Shaggers Hall of Fame Foundation, c/o Eddie Monsour, 2738 Colgate Drive, Fayetteville, NC 28304.
Mr. Crawford died Friday, March 5. Born in Greensboro, N.C., he was a son of the late William Henry and Mearl Thornton Crawford. He graduated from Carlisle Military School in 1950, served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1954, and attended Clemson University and the University of South Carolina. He officiated high school football for 11 years, coached in the Pop Warner Football League in Charlotte, was associated with Creative Advertising for 34 years, and was a member of West Hartsville Baptist Church. He was a member of the Shaggers Hall of Fame and The Living Legends of North Myrtle Beach. John will be remembered for his love of the outdoors — an avid hunter and fisherman. Along with Jim Cox, they organized the Darlington County Ducks Unlimited Chapter.
Surviving are his wife, Deborah Crawford of Hartsville; sons and daughter–in–law, Bill and Dawn Crawford of Hartsville, John T. Crawford of Cheraw; daughters and son–in–law, Jeannie and Mitchell Gainey of Hartsville, Julia Crawford of Hartsville; grandchildren, Mary Gainey, Lee Gainey, Morgan Crawford and William Crawford.
JASON THOMPSON
Funeral services for Jason Dale Thompson, 22, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 7, 2004, at North Hartsville Baptist Church with the Rev. Ladell Humphries officiating. Burial followed in Westview Memorial Park cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mr. Thompson died Friday, March 5. Born in Charleston County, he was a son of Dale Alvin and Shirley Berry Thompson. He was a loving and giving son, brother, and uncle, with a big heart for everyone. He loved soccer, swimming, golf, and won Mr. Hartsville High in 1999.
Surviving are his father and mother, of Hartsville; sister and brother–in–law, Melissa Thompson and Travis Windham of Hartsville; brother and sister–in–law, Jeremy Lee and Kristine Thompson of Hartsville; nephew, Wesley Dale Windham; nieces, Alyssa Windham, Teagen Windham; maternal grandmother, Betty Ann Berry of Marion.
CHERRY TYNER
GEORGETOWN — Memorial services for Cherrie James Tyner, 60, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2004, at the Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary B. Adams officiating.
Mrs. Tyner died Sunday, Feb. 29, at her residence. She was born in Hartsville on March 29, 1943, a daughter of the late Henry and Maude James of Hartsville. She was a 1965 graduate of Winthrop College. Mrs. Tyner received a master of education degree from the University of South Carolina and was retired from the Georgetown County School System, where she shared her love of music for 30 years.
She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Jack Tyner of Georgetown; two sons, Jason Tyner of Georgetown and Bruce Tyner of New Orleans, La.; a sister, Ruth Adams of Kingstree; and a brother, John Ronald James of Hartsville.

JAMES E. McGREW
COLUMBIA — Funeral services for James Edward McGrew were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 6, 2004, at Kelleytown Baptist Church in Hartsville with the Rev. Bruce Hall, Dr. Sidney L. Kelley and the Rev. Gary Anderson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mr. McGrew, husband of Dora Kelley McGrew, departed this life on Wednesday, March 3. He was born Aug. 4, 1926, in Florence and raised in his hometown of Conway. He proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II.
Mr. McGrew was a professional real estate broker for more than 30 years, was a well known member of the Columbia community and friend to all who knew him. Since his retirement, he was a videographer and served many by filming weddings and transferring old home movies. He used his hobby and passion for computers and the latest technological gadgets to help others in any way he could.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, his brother, Ernest McGrew, his four chidren, James Edward McGrew Jr., Lynda McGrew Dyas, Micheal Kelley McGrew and Patricia McGrew Waldrop and their respective spouses and five grandchildren.

MARY E. MILLER
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Mary Elizabeth Lib Miller, 76, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, 2004, in the Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Richard Sawyer and the Rev. Elton B. Miller. Burial followed in the Indian Branch United Methodist Church cemetery.
Ms. Miller died Saturday, March 6. She was born in Darlington County. She was the widow of the late Leo Miller and the daughter of the late Eugene and Alice May Grady Lloyd. Ms. Miller was a homemaker and enjoyed helping people. She was predeceased by three sons, Leslie Miller, Wayne Miller and Jackie Miller; two sisters, Linda Smith and Helen Anderson, and one brother, James Lloyd.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary (Calvin) Gray of Darlington; one son, Johnny (Vonda) Miller of Latta, one sister, Joyce (Jimmy) Garrison of Darlington; eight grandchildren; 11 great–grandchildren and a very special niece, Marcie Blackwell.

NANCY M. LEFTWICH
DARLINGTON — A memorial service for Nancy M. Leftwich, 100, will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 11, 2004, at First Baptist Church of Darlington conducted by the Rev. Dr. Ken Sandifer and the Rev. John Summerville, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.
Mrs. Leftwich died Saturday, March 6, at Bethea Baptist Home. She was born in Laurens, a daughter of the late William Edward and Lucinda Downs Hudgins Meng. She graduated from Winthrop College in 1925. Mrs. Leftwich was a librarian and teacher in Greenville County. She was a loving and faithful member of First Baptist Church in Darlington for more than 70 years. Mrs. Leftwich was the church secretary and a member of the TEL Sunday School Class. She served as executive director of the American Red Cross. Mrs. Leftwich was predeceased by her husband, Ernest H. Leftwich, and two children.

ROBERT CHAREST
RALEIGH, N.C. — A memorial service to celebrate the life of Robert Herman Charest, 79, was held at 2 p.m Monday, March 8, 2004, at Brown–Wynne Funeral Home Chapel, Raleigh, N.C., with the Rev. Doug Duncan, officiating.
Mr. Charest died Thursday, March 4, at his home. A native of Oakland, R.I., he was born on April 15, 1924, to the late Wilfred Theodore and Laura Bessette Charest. He served his county in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Asiatic–Pacific Theater. After 29 years of employment, he retired from IBM as a senior planner.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Josephine Morrone Charest, of the home; his three children and their spouses, Claudia Charest of Raleigh, N.C., Robert and Laurie Charest of Apex, N.C., and Laura and Brad Ross of Hartsville; a sister, Harriett Charest Conroy; four brothers, Francis Gustave Charest, Terry Charest, Kenneth Charest and Colin Charest; eight grandchildren, Jared and Geoff Dixon of Raleigh, N.C.; Robert, Chris and Jenny Charest of Apex, N.C., Ashley, Courtney and David Ross of Hartsville; and a step–mother, Norma Charest. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation for the special care shown by Mr. Douglas Douglas.
