Elbert L. Rogers, 76, husband of Willie Franklin Rogers, of 271 Meansville Road, Apt. B-8, Union, died at his home Wednesday, May 19, 2004, after a long illness. Mr. Rogers was born in Kingsport, Tenn., Jan. 14, 1928, a son of the late A.Z. Rogers and Annie Rhinehart Rogers and was the step-son of the late Lessie Parton Rogers.
Mr. Rogers was retired from Torrington Co., and was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War. He was retired after 27 years with the S.C. National Guard, Union unit. Mr. Rogers was a graduate of Union High School and Cecil Business College. He was a member of the Gilead Baptist Church where he was a former deacon and Sunday School teacher and also served as custodian of the church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Rhonda Caugham of Union, Joyce Lawson of Brunswick, Ga., and Tammy Willard of Buffalo; a son, David Rogers of Union; three sisters, Lucille Whitmore of Greer, Audrey Large of Inman and Gloria Gowan of Buffalo; two brothers, Jack Rogers of Illinois and Joe Rogers of Columbia; eight grandchildren, Scottie Burris, Amy Bobo, Michael Lawson, Michelle Caugham, Elliott Rogers, Dale Willard, Derek Willard and Dylan Rogers, all of Union; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Rogers was predeceased by a daughter, Linda Rogers Vinson, a brother, Lee (Bill) Rogers and a sister, Jimmie Lorene Dent. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Gilead Baptist Church by the Rev. Lawton Neely and Father Jim Hager. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors.
The following are asked to assemble at the church Saturday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Larry Bennett, Brian Bennett, D.C. Henderson, Colon Duckett, Tim Cobb and Mark Ivester, former deacons of Gilead Baptist Church and members of Mr. Rogers Sunday School class.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of his granddaughter, Amy Bobo, 496 John Cody Church Road, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Leola B. Thompson
DRAYTON Leola Brandle Thompson, 73, of 4 Montgomery St., died Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born July 6, 1930, in Shelby, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Homer and Dovie Barnet Harrill and the late Frank and Lillian O'Sullivan Brandle, her adoptive parents. She was retired from Startex Mills as a weaver with over 30 years of service, and was a member of Cannon's Camp Ground United Methodist Church.
Survivors include:a daughter, Debbie Thompson Gowan and her husband, Charles Richard Gowan, of Union; a son, Ricky S. Thompson and his wife, Tammy Thompson, of Wellford. She was predeceased by four sisters, Annie Mae O'Sullivan, Lillian Bass, Thelma Ellis, and Vera Hudson; a brother, Irby Harrill; and a grandson, Scottie Burrell. She was the last surviving members of her immediate family.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. today at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. M. Kempie Shepard and the Rev. Mike Bowers. The family received friends following the services at the graveside. The family is at the home. Floyd's North Church Street Chapel.
Kate Hightower
CAYCE Graveside services for Kate Hightower, 88, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. Miss Hightower died Tuesday, May 20, 2003. She was born in Union, a daughter of the late Charlie O. Hightower and Fannie Scott Hightower. She was retired from the S.C. Department of Mental Health, Nursing Services after 35 years. She was a member of Morningside Baptist Church of Union.
Surviving are a sister, Mary Ruth Vess of Columbia, nieces and nephews, Mr. and Mrs. Doyle DeBruhl of Willis, Texas, Mr. and Mrs. O'Neil DeBruhl of Knoxville, Tenn., Mr. and Mrs. Allen Tinsley of Columbia; Sherrill Styron of Columbia; Mr. and Mrs. David Moore of Austin, Texas; Mr. and Mrs. Danny Moore of Santa Rosa, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. Leo Selker of Chicago, Ill.. and Tommy Moore of Houston, Texas and numerous great-nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff of Twilight Manor and Tri County Hospice for their loving care during Miss Hightower's illness. Memorials may be made to Tri-County Hospice or the Leukemia Society. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, Columbia has charge of arrangements.
Harry Ray Phillips
Harry Ray (Abie) Phillips, 59, husband of Gayle Crawford Phillips, of 300 Catawba St., died Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mr. Phillips was born in the Monarch Community Dec. 11, 1933, a son of the late J. D. and Aleen Bailey Phillips. He was a graduate of Newberry College and had worked with Conso Products for 19 years.
Mr. Phillips was retired as agent in charge with the S.C. Department of Probation, Parole and Pardons. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served during the Korean Conflict. He was a lifetime member of the John A. Fant Masonic Lodge and a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. The family is at the home, 309 Catawba St. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Judy Neal
Judy Elaine Neal, 55, of 203 Cogdill Plaza died at her home Wednesday, May 21, 2003. Mrs. Neal was born in Wadena, Minn., Oct. 5, 1947, a daughter of the late Lawrence and Wilma Gehlhar Brill. She was retired from Harrah's Casino as a customer services representative.
Surviving are two daughters, Tina Compton of Enoree and Tanya Bill of California; two sisters, Sharon Olson of Minnesota and Carolyn Johnson of North Dakota; two brothers, Chuck Brill and David Brill, both of Minnesota; and four grandchildren, Nicole Brill, Gregory Brummitt, David Brill and Brian Brill.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the End of Time Assembly of God in Woodruff by Kenneth Nix. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter and son-in-law Tina and Jason Compton, 300 Dillard Road, Enoree, Friday night from 6 until 9. Graveside services will be held at a later date in Minnesota. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
Annie Barrow Belue
Annie Barrow Belue, 103, of 106 Sonco Road, widow of L.O. Belue, died Thursday, May 22, 2003, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Belue was born in Workman on Jan. 18, 1900; a daughter of the late James Lellan and Ila Aileen McClam Barrow. She was a retired Union County school teacher, having taught in the Jonesville area schools. Mrs. Belue was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School since 1932.
Surviving are two sons, Harvey Belue and Henry Belue of Union; two sisters, Mrs. Paul Foster of Greenville and Hazel Barrow of Spartanburg; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Belue was predeceased by a son, Richard Belue. The family is at the home of her home, 106 Sonoco Road, Union. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Talmadge E. Lindsey Jr.
JONESVILLE Talmadge Eugene (Gene) Lindsey Jr., 38, of 126 Harris St., died at his home Wednesday, May 21, 2003. Mr. Lindsey was born in Spartanburg on March 10, 1965, a son of Talmadge Eugene Lindsey Sr. of the home and the late Dorothy Kendrick Lindsey. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and was self-employed. Mr. Lindsey was a veteran of the U. S. Marine Corps and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving in addition to his father are a sister, Sandra Fowler of Jonesville; a niece, Tanya Holmes and a nephew, Rowlen Chais Jr., both of Jonesville. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Gilead Baptist Church by the Rev. Ralph Brown.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 at Holcombe's Jonesville Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Talmadge Eugene Lindsey Jr. Fund, P.O. Box 293, Union, S.C., 29379. The family is at the home of his cousin, Barbara Lewis, 227 Main St., Jonesville. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
Harry Ray Phillips

Farner, Amos Pee Wee Sanford, Olin Lee, Dean Gallman, Dean Walker, Don Hines, Mr. and Mrs. tom Hamrick, Carl Patrick, Dan Martin, Charles Boyle, Sony Crocker, B. L. Ledford, former employees of Conso, Adamsburg Plant and former employees of the S.C. Department of Probation, parole and Pardon Services.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. Curtis Robinson
CINCINNATI, Ohio Curtis Robinson, 90, widower of Hattie Mae Robinson, died May 22, 2003 at Glencare Nursing Home. A native of Union County, Mr. Robinson played varsity football and baseball at Sims High School and was a veteran of World War II and of the CCC. He retired from the United States Postal Service and was a former Deacon of Corinthian Baptist Church of Cincinnati.
Surviving are six sons, Curtis Jr., Michael (Elaine), Mack (Annette) Paul, Clarence, and Melvin, all of Cincinnati, Ohio; four daughters, Bernice Laskey, Paulette Gibson, and Jeanette Robinson, of Cincinnati and Yvonne R. Holcomb of Union; a brother, Furman Robinson Sr. of Union; a sister, Arree E. Robinson of Union; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Austell Robinson Sr. (Floree) of Union; a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Woodson's Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Collins. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home today until 7 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 until 11:30 a.m. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. to await the hour of service. The Union Community Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Nick A. Spears
Nick A. Spears of 2117 Pea Ridge Highway, Jonesville, died May 20, 2003 at his home. Mr. Spears was born March 10, 1920 in Union County to the late B. Simmons and Iris Spears. He was the husband of the late Jannie Bell Matthews Spears. His is survived by two daughters, Janet M Cooks of the home and Sakinah L. Akbar of Lavonia, Ga., two grandsons and four granddaughters.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Gibson & Brown Chapel. Burial in Ervington Baptist Church Cemetery, Allendale. The family will receive friends at the home of his grandson, Alias Spears, 871 Eison Town Road, Jonesville. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
