MIDDENDORF — Funeral services for Earl Homer Johnson Sr., 70, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 7, 2004 at Hebron United Methodist Church with the Rev. Larry Allen officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Hebron United Methodist Church cemetery Fund, 142 Southern Lane, McBee, SC 29101.
Mr. Johnson died Friday, March 5. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late William Knoxie and Lillie Rivers Johnson. He was a member of Hebron United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Dixon Johnson of Middendorf; sons and daughters–in–law, Homer and Teri Johnson of Perkasie, Pa., Alexander and Cindy Johnson of Middendorf, Randy and Dot Johnson of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Amanda and Amos Catoe of Middendorf; stepsons, Allen Dixon, Wendy Dixon, both of McBee; stepdaughter, Velda Bess of Middendorf; brothers, Rivers Johnson and Sammy Johnson, both of Middendorf, Donald Johnson of Hartsville, Jake Johnson of Palatka, Fla.; sisters, Marjorie J. Hancock, of Middendorf, Betty J. Putzey and Vivian J. Hunnicutt, both of McBee, Joyce J. Gibson of Charlotte; 17 grandchildren; three great–grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Estelle Walters Johnson.
WASH JAMES
Funeral services for Wash James, 74, will be held today, March 5, 2004, at 3 p.m. in the Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in Greenlawn cemetery directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Hartsville. The James family is receiving friends at the residence at 327 Marlboro Ave., Hartsville.
Mr James died Monday, March 1, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. He was born March 10, 1929, in Lee County, a son of the late Lawrence James and Janie Mingo James. Bunk, as he was called by many, was an excellent painter and had many self–employed ventures in Hartsville. He was a member of New Testament Missionary Baptist Church in Hartsville.
He is survived by his wife, Myrtle James of Hartsville; eight sons, Kelcey (Margaret) James, Jason James, Jerome (Rena) James and Isaac Davis, all of Hartsville, Nicolas (Ruby) James of Kitzingen, Germany, Wash (Brenda) James Jr. of Columbia, Hazel L. (Nadine) James of Conyers, Ga., and Howard (Tina) James of Atlanta, Ga.; six daughters, Cherly M. (Allen) Douglas and Darlene (Thomas) Parker, both of Lithonia, Ga., Nadine James of Hartsville, Patricia (Samuel) Rushing of West Palm Beach, Fla., Carolyn (Dennis) Horton of Raleigh, N.C., Deborah (Ronnie) James of Jacksonville, Fla.; one brother, Charles (Annie) James of Philadelphia, Pa.; three sisters, Ruth M. Lacey, Janie (Robert) Poulson and Peggy Davis all of Philadelphia, Pa.; 32 grandchildren; 15 great–grandchildren and a host of other relatives.
ROSE E. WATKINS
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Rose Eva Beluch Watkins, 84, will be held at 2 p.m. today, March 5, 2004, in the Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Jody Wynn. Burial will follow in Darlington Memory Gardens directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.
Mrs. Watkins died Monday, March 1, at her residence after an illness. She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., daughter of the late John and Anna Maherina Beluch. Mrs. Watkins was a very friendly, outgoing and loving person who enjoyed helping people and loved animals. She was a retired seamstress.
Surviving are one son, Larry Howell of Mebane, N.C.; one granddaughter, Vanessa Manuel of Austinville, Va.; two great–granddaughters, Larissa Howell–Manuel and Reanna Howell–Manuel, and a dear friend, Clifford Luedtke of Darlington.
RUTH REAMES
FLORENCE — Funeral services for Ruth Ferguson Reames, 84, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 4, 2004, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ken Phelps officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Hancock–Elmore–Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville.
Mrs. Reames died Monday, March 1, at McLeod Regional Medical Center. She was born in Lancaster, the daughter of the late James M. Ferguson and the late Minnie Bailey Ferguson. She was a graduate of Erskine College and was retired from Bishopville High School after 34 years of teaching and counseling. She was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, James Frederick Rick Reames Jr. and wife, Dorothy, of Florence and Edward Spann Spann Reames and his wife, Terrie, of Hartsville; grandchildren, James Frederick Rick Reames III and wife, Elizabeth of Columbia, David Edward Edward Reames and Ashley Ferguson Reams of Hartsville.

PATRICK JEFFORDS
Funeral services for Patrick Marion Jeffords, 54, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 6, 2004, at First Presbyterian Church, Hartsville. The Rev. Dr. Jeri Parris Perkins will officiate with burial in Bethlehem United Methodist Church cemetery, Bishopville, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends this evening, March 5, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home and at other times at the residence at 516 W. College Ave. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Mexico Mission Team, 213 W. Home Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mr. Jeffords died Wednesday, March 3. Born in Florence, he was a son of Margery Woodham Jeffords and the late Hugh Hamilton Jeffords. He graduated from Bishopville High School and attended the University of South Carolina. After serving as a chaplain's assistant in the U. S. Army, he returned to work for the South Carolina Tax Commission until his retirement due to illness.
As an elder at First Presbyterian Church, Pat worked tirelessly as a soup kitchen and office volunteer and as a member of the Mexico Mission Team. He delighted in being a senior high advisor and a mentor of the Covenant Partner Confirmation Class (2001) . Varied community interests included work as a master gardener, participation in Christmas in April project and commander of the Robert E. Lee American Legion Post No. 29.
Surviving are his wife, Luan Shaw Jeffords of Hartsville; son, Patrick Hugh Jeffords of Columbia; daughters, Caroline DuBard Jeffords and Chloe McLeod Jeffords, both of Columbia; mother of Bishopville; brothers and sisters–in–law, Mike and Lisa Jeffords of Dalzell, Robin Jeffords of Columbia, David and Carol Jeffords of Quinby; nieces and nephews, Jill, Kate, Danielle, Nicholas, Weston and Heath. He was preceded in death by his sister, Jane Jeffords.
Pat was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf. His easy going manner, ready wit and lovable personality endeared him to family and a host of friends and co–workers.
KEVIN STEFAN DOUGLAS
Funeral services for Kevin Stefan Douglas, 33, were held Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at 1 p.m. at Jerusalem Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Greenlawn cemetery with professional services entrusted to Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Hartsville.
Mr. Douglas died Thursday, Feb. 26, from injuries sustained in a car accident. He was born Nov. 12, 1970, in Darlington County, the second son of Charles and Patricia Pratt Douglas. He attended the public schools of Darlington County and graduated from Hartsville High School with the Class of 1989. While at Hartsville High School, he played on the varsity basketball team and was a bus driver. Kevin was an exceptional student and graduated in the top 10 percent of his class. After graduation, he matriculated at Clemson University and graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was also a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.
He was employed with Honda Manufacturing Company of Florence. Kevin was a lifelong member of Jerusalem Baptist Church.
He is survived by his loving parents; Charles and Patricia Douglas of Hartsville; one brother, Charles (Nevada) Douglas Jr. of Raleigh, N.C.; one sister, Trishondra Douglas of Boiling Springs; paternal grandmother, Bertha Douglas of Hartsville; and maternal grandparents, James and Josie Pratt of Hartsville.

Wash James died Monday, March 1, 2004, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. The James Family will receive friends at the residence at 327 Marlboro Ave., Hartsville.
DWIGHT GRAINGER
PINEVILLE — A celebration of eternal life service for Dwight Grainger, 73, will be held this evening, March 3, 2004, at 7 o'clock in the chapel of Dial–Murray Funeral Home in Moncks Corner. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Charlotte Walters of Hartsville and Dr. John N. Miller of St. Stephen in conjunction with Masonic Rites by Mt. Hope Lodge No. 128 AFM. Friends may call at the Funeral Home from 5 p.m. until the hour of service today. The family requests potted plants or in lieu of flowers memorials to be made to the Hospice of Charleston, 3870 Leeds Ave., Charleston, SC 29405, or to the Omar Temple, PO Box 21028, Charleston, SC 29413.
Mr. Grainger died Saturday, Feb. 28, at his residence. He was a retired maintenance carpenter for the Berkeley County School System. He was born June 15, 1930, in Fair Bluff, N.C., a son of Clement Wooten Grainger and Inez Harrelson Grainger. Mr. Grainger was a member of the Bonneau Baptist Church and was affiliated with the East Side Holiness Church of Hartsville and the Belle Isle Presbyterian Church of Pineville. He was a member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Charleston, the Omar Shrine Temple of Mt. Pleasant, and Mt. Hope Lodge No.128 AFM where he resigned as Worshipful Master in 1988. He organized the first Hillbilly Clan Outhouse No. 1 in Bonneau. He was a member of the Governor's Board at the Berkeley Shrine Club, Moncks Corner. Mr. Grainger was also Worthy Patron of the Eastern Star, Rainbow Dad of the Rainbow Girls, and a member of the Master and Warden Club during his service to Lodge No. 128. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Grainger was a commercial transportation driver for Sonoco for eight years, a licensed contractor for Marion Gandy Home Builders and Jim Walter Homes and former owner of Smoke House Restaurant in Bonneau. His life led him into many occupations and he excelled in all of them. One of those occupations was carpenter and he felt that nothing in life was a greater achievement than being close to his God and his family.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Hayes; a grandson, Stephen Trey Gill III; and a granddaughter, Casey Agnes Jane Grainger Dupree.
Mr. Grainger is survived by his wife of 48 years, Bettie Waldron Grainger; one son, Phillip Waldron Grainger of Folly Beach; five daughters. Sonya Kelly Myers of Pineville, Kaye (Eddie) Springs of Moncks Corner, lra (Steve) Taylor of Pineville, Carla Strickland of Pineville, and Martha (Mack) Prosser of Pineville; grandchildren, George Thomas (Jamie) Kelly and Donald Dwight Kelly of Hartsville, Kenneth (Lisa) Crooks of Greelyville, Tessa Fornter of Olanta, Roy Edward Allen of Macedonia, Sarah Elizabeth Morris of Cross, Stepthanie and Zane Taylor of Bonneau; great–grandchildren, Blake Fornter II of Olanta and Kenny Lynn Crooks III of Greelyville; brothers, the Rev. Paul (Lois) Grainger of Petersburg, Ky., Fred (Molly) Grainger of Latta, the Rev. Dr. Terry (Sue) Grainger of Conway; sisters, Hazel Miller of Mullins and Margaret (Wayne) Thompson of Chaplin.
JULIUS W. HANCOCK
Graveside services for Julius W. Hancock, 78, were held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at Cedar Creek Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mr. Hancock died Saturday, Feb. 28. He was born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late William and Lottie Hancock.
Surviving are his wife, Lillie Mae Jones Hancock, Hartsville; daughter, Linda Abbgy of St. Joseph, Mich.; three grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Sandra Hewling.
LAWRENCE BUCK
DARLINGTON — A graveside service for Lawrence E. Micky Buck was held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 2, 2004, in the Mechanicsville Baptist Church cemetery, conducted by Pastor Frankie Tanner, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.
Mr. Buck died Sunday, Feb. 29. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Otis and Minnie Louise Anderson Buck. He retired from the U.S. Army and enjoyed fishing and gardening. Mr. Buck was a H.A.M. operator and a past member of the Darlington Firemen Rescue Squad. He was a faithful member of the COOT Group of the Mechanicsville Baptist Church.
Survivors include Kathy Stevens Buck of the home; two sons, Edward Keith Buck of Augusta, Ga., and Michael Lawrence (Joy) Buck of Rome, Ga.; two daughters, Michelle Larrimore of Hartsville and Monique Buck of Darlington; one brother, Benny (Helen) Buck of Darlington; three sisters, Rosa Lee (Boyd) Goude of Batesburg, Carolyn Hatfield of Sumter and Sandra (Buddy) Phifer of Florence; two grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.
CALLIE MAE JACKSON
Funeral services for Callie Mae Jackson, 91, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial followed in Cherry Grove Baptist Church cemetery directed by Young &Young; Funeral Home.
Mrs. Jackson died Thursday at her residence after an illness.
She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Prest and Bell Allen. She received her education in the public schools of the county. She was a member of Cherry Grove Baptist Church.
Surviving are her children, Mamie Hudson, formerly of Brooklyn, N.Y., Ella Jackson of Queens, N.Y., Laura Watson of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Curtis Jackson of Darlington; 15 grandchildren, and host of other close relatives and friends.
WILLIAM WILSON
Funeral services for William Wilson, 83, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 4, 2004, at Galilee Apostolic Holiness Church with Bishop Oziah McDonald officiating. Burial will be In Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Wilson died Sunday, Feb. 29, at his residence after an illness.
He was born in Lee County, a son of the late Adam and Taska Richardson Wilson. He received his education in the Darlington County public schools and attended Kay Branch Missionary Baptist Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Martie Davis of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a sister, Rosa Lee Toney of Hartsville; a special niece, Dorothy McDaniel of Hartsville; great– and great–great–grandnieces, nephews, and other close relatives and friends.
LILLIE MAE ISAAC
Funeral services for Lillie Mae Isaac, 84, will be 3 p.m. today, March 3, 2004, at Kay Branch Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mrs. Isaac died Sunday, Feb. 29, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an Illness. She was born In Darlington County, a daughter of the late Flemen and Alice Jett Stevenson.
She received her education in the Darlington County public schools. She a member of Kay Branch Missionary Baptist Church. Mrs. Isaac served on the Missionary Society, Senior Choir, vice president of Mother's Board and Adult Class Sunday school teacher.
Surviving are one daughter, Sarah Anna Isaac of Lake View; one son, George Franklin Isaac of Hartsville; two step–sons, Bennie Walters of Florence and Leroy Isaac of Hartsville; two step–daughters, Margaree McFarland of Hartsville and Sarah Walters of Florence; special grandson that she reared as her own, Carl (Angela) Isaac Sr. of Hartsville and Torrey Isaac of Florence; one granddaughter, Deborah Jackson of Hartsville; three great–granddaughters, Chantell lsaac, Chalita Jackson and Chaundra Jackson; two great–grandsons, Cedrick Ludd and Carl Isaac Jr; one daughter–in–law, Rosa Lee Isaac of Hartsville; two sisters–in–law, Alma Stevenson of Boston, Mass., and Naomi Stevenson of Hartsville; one brother–in–law, Henry J. Dickey of Hartsville; three step–grandchildren, Chuck Cain, Kim Cain, and Keisha Holmes; one adopted–daughter, Millie (Ernest) Jackson of Hartsville; special friend, Anya Aiken, close cousins, the Knight Family, devoted nieces, nephews, other close neighbors and friends.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A memorial service for Eugenia Carwile McAlpine Lewis, 83, will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, March 5, 2004, at The Presbyterian Home of South Carolina in Florence, conducted by the Reverend Stuart R. Gordon pastor of John Calvin Presbyterian Church in Florence.
A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Lewis, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 6, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church, Hartsville. The service will be led by the Rev. Dr. Jeri Parris Perkins, pastor, and the Reverend Dr. Malcolm C. Doubles.
Memorials may be sent to the First Presbyterian Church, 122 Home Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550, the Presbyterian Home of South Carolina, Box 210037, Columbia, SC 29221 or Coker College, Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Lewis died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at the home of her daughter, Lucia L. Solomon in Newport News, Va.
Mrs. Lewis, was a native of Hartsville, and was educated in the public schools. A 1941 graduate of Coker College, she returned to work there in 1960 and held various positions including director of alumni affairs and college publications. Her career at the college spanned 25 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Dempsey Lewis, to whom she was married
for 58 years. Mrs. Lewis was the daughter of Mary Lucia Mobley and Thomas Eugene McAlpine. Her maternal grandparents were Mary Eugenia Carwile and Samuel Goode Mobley, M.D., of Johnston in Edgefield County. Her paternal grandparents were Anna Louise Elliott and the Rev. John Robert McAlpine of Clarksville, Ga.
She is survived by two daughters, Lucia Mobley Lewis Solomon and her husband, William C. Solomon, and Kathryn Elizabeth Lewis Stanzione of Newport News; her son, Harold Dempsey Lewis Jr. and his wife, Dianna Lea Hutchinson Lewis, of Indianapolis, Ind.; and six grandchildren, Daniel Charles Stanzione, John Robert Stanzione, Kathryn Eugenia Stanzione, Mary Lucia Solomon Spake and her husband, Michael Adger Spake; Amy Michelle Solomon, and James Travis Mikell; one great–grandson, Henry Lewis Spake; a sister–in–law, Betty Ann McKinnon McAlpine of Hartsville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Thomas Eugene McAlpine and Samuel Goode McAlpine.
