HOWARD P. PARKS

WADESBORO, N.C. — Funeral services for Howard P. Parks, 70, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, at Bethel United Methodist Church in Patrick with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Miller–Rivers–Caulder Funeral Home of Chesterfield.

Mr. Parks died Saturday, Feb. 21. He was born in Randolph County, N.C., a son of the late Lowell Kenneth and Helen Wright Parks. He was a U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army veteran with 22 years of service, having served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Mr. Parks was also a retired Anson County employee. He was a member of the VFW and Bethel United Methodist Church. He was married to the late Thalia Crowley Parks and was also preceded in death by a brother, Alfred Parks.

Survivors include two sons, Lowel Parks and fiancee' Shelia Spencer of Wadesboro, N.C., and Bryant Parks and wife Debra, of Hartsville; two brothers, Malcolm Bob Parks of Patrick and Wayne Parks of Laurel Hill, N.C.; two sisters, Bobbie Ann Parks of Hamlet, N.C., and Elsie Baldwin of Rockingham, N.C.; five grandchildren and one great–grandchild.

FRANCES CAMPBELL

Funeral services for Frances Poore Campbell, 77, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. David Surrett and Jason Moore officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210, or McLeod Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.

Mrs. Campbell, widow of the Rev. Manley Campbell, died Saturday, Feb. 21. Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late Grover and Pauline Gilbert Poore. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, received an Amity Fellowship and was formerly associated with Gordon Shoes in Union, S.C.

Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Sammy and Janie Campbell of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Sharon and Bill Stewart of Florida; grandchildren, Nate O'Dell of Florida, Allen O'Dell of Florida, Patricia Campbell of Hartsville, P.F.C. Andrew Campbell of Ft. Stewart, Ga; and four great–grandchildren.

RAY H. TRUETT

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Ray Heyward Truett, 77, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, at Darlington Church of God of Prophecy, conducted by the Rev. Bobby Steen and directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home. Burial followed in Odom cemetery.

Mr. Truett died Thursday, Feb. 19. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Henry E. and Katherine Lena Lett Truett. He retired from General Motors of Flint, Mich., after 30 years of service. Mr. Truett served in the U.S. Army and enjoyed fishing and gardening. He was a member of the Moose Lodge of Darlington. Mr. Truett was predeceased by three brothers, Colon W. Truett, Ira Truett, and Roy W. Truett; and three sisters, Inez T. Lamb, Ruby T. Duckett and Ola T. Dickerson.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Truett of the home; two sons, Larry (Connie) Truett of Clio, Mich., and Tony (Kathy) Truett of Darlington; two step–daughters, Karin McAlpine of California and Chris (Chuck) Thompson of Michigan; one sister, Emmie T. Sansbury of Oates; eight grandchildren and eight great–grandchildren.

NETTER BERRY RAGIN

BALTIMORE, Md. — Netter Berry Ragin of Baltimore, Md., formerly of Darlington, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. today, Feb. 25, in Cherry Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. E. B., Burroughs, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Hartsville. The family will receive friends at the home of her sister, Mary Sue Hudson of 819 3rd Street, Darlington.

Mrs. Ragin was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Junious McIver and Annie Bell Berry. She was educated in the Darlington County public schools. She lived and worked in Baltimore, Md., until her death. She was married to the late Robert Ragin.

Survivors include a daughter, Anette Luster of Bronx, New York; sister, Mary Sue Hudson of Darlington and brother, James Berry of Bronx, N.Y.

LEROY LANE

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Leroy Lane will be held at 2:30 p.m Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, in Union Baptist Church with the Rev. P. W. Williams, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Darlington Memorial cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.

Mr. Lane died Saturday, Feb. 21, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Jenkins and Maggie Cato Lane. He received his formal education in the Darlington County public schools and was a farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Katie Oliver Lane of Darlington; four daughters, Mazie (Jessie) Nettles, Hester Johnson, Sheila Land and Linda Lane; a step–daughter, Dianne Ross, all of Darlington; two sons, John Henry Lane and Allen (Virginia) Lane, both of Darlington; 13 grandchildren; 12 great–grandchildren; in–laws, nieces; nephews and cousins.

Mr. Lane was preceded in death by a son, Joseph.

The family is receiving friends at the home of his daughter, Hester Johnson, 230 Syracuse St., Darlington.

SHANN O'QUINN

CHARLESTON — Funeral services for Shan Rebecca Grant O'Quinn, 42, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at Harmony Baptist Church. The Rev. Ric Edgar will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends this evening, Feb. 25, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Scholarship Fund in Shan O'Quinn's honor to: Charleston Area Claims Association, PO Box 20789, Charleston, SC 29413.

Mrs. O'Quinn died Monday, Feb. 23. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Clarence Donald and Fran Bolton Grant.

Surviving are her husband, Robert Steven O'Quinn of Charleston; son, Bryan Thomas Flynn of Charleston; daughter, Kimberly Rebecca Flynn of Charleston; brother and sister–in–law, Donald and Shannon Grant Jr. of Hartsville; niece, Amy Elizabeth Grant of Hartsville and nephew, Austin Gage Grant of Hartsville.

LLOYD E. ETHRIDGE

Funeral services for Lloyd Earl (Bubba) Ethridge Jr., 30, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, at Pine Ridge Holiness Church with burial in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 8 at the Funeral Home.

Mr. Ethridge died Thursday, Feb. 19, as a result of an auto accident. He was born in Georgetown County, a son of Lloyd Earl Ethridge Sr. and Gloria Cox Ethridge. He was employed with Ingram Lumber Company.

Surviving are his wife, Kim Kissiah Ethridge of Hartsville; his parents of Pamplico; two daughters, Kaylee and Morgan Ethridge of Hartsville; two sisters, Beth Freeman of Pamplico and Tammy Wise of Florence; paternal grandmother, Estelle Ethridge of Andrews; father and mother–in–law, Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Kissiah of Hartsville.

BARRETT WINT

Graveside services for Jason Barrett Wint Jr., infant son of Jason Barrett and Jamie Brown Wint Sr., were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, in Magnolia cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Bob Cline officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Surviving are his parents of Hartsville; siblings, Breanna and Chandler of the home; paternal grandparents, Claude and Annette Wint of Hartsville; maternal grandparents, John and Cynthia Brown of Bishopville; maternal great–grandparents, John and Louise Wilson and John and Gladys Brown, all of Darlington.

KAITLYN R. AARON

DARLINGTON — Graveside funeral services for Kaitlyn Rene Aaron, infant daughter of Carolyn Miller and David Aaron, were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004, in the Society Hill Church of God cemetery, conducted by Pastor Holmes Martin and directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington.

Kaitlyn died Monday, Feb. 16. She is survived by her parents and a sister, Tiffany Aaron; her maternal grandparents, Leroy and Johnnie Miller and paternal grandparents, David and Susan Aaron.

BENJAMIN HICKS SR.

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Benjamin Hicks Sr., will be held at 1 p.m. today, Feb. 20, 2004, at St. James United Methodist Church with the Rev. Anna G. Miller, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Faith Memorial Gardens, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.

Mr. Hicks died Sunday, Feb. 15, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late John and Lillian Harrison Hicks.

He received his formal education in the Darlington County public schools and at an early age became a member of Cherry Grove Baptist Church. He moved to New York City, where he was employed by the New York City Health Department until he retired in 1987. He returned to Darlington and became a member of St. James United Methodist Church where he served on the men's chorus and was a member of the United Methodist Men Organization.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Mingo Hicks of the home; his children, Shirley Hicks (Boyd) , Lillian Hicks (James) Gooden, Benjamin Hicks Jr., Barbara Ann Hicks, Rosalind Hicks (Sonny Sr.) Jeter, Tracy Hicks (Demetrius) Murphy, Shante Hicks, Jason Hicks, all of Brooklyn, N.Y., Orika Hall of Darlington, Al Miller of Jacksonville, Fla., and Victor Hicks of Decatur, Ga.; a brother, William Willie Hicks of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 18 grandchildren; a special granddaughter, Tawanna A. Fluker of Atlanta, Ga.; 13 great–grandchildren; a special great–grandson, Kysheem Armstrong of Whiteville, N.C.; two step–children; Yolanda N. Bevel of Atlanta, Ga., and Otis Thomas Bevel Jr. of Newport News, Va.; two aunts, Maggie Hicks and Carrie Harrison, both of Darlington; sister–in–law, Mildred Hicks of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a goddaughter, Kelcy McCray; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives who shared his life.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Richard Hicks and Vinson Hicks.

The family is receiving friends at the residence at 108 Joe Louis Blvd., Darlington.

WYLIE POLSON

SOCIETY HILL — Funeral services for Wylie Bozo Polson, 59, were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, at the Society Hill Presbyterian Church with interment following in the church cemetery, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington.

Mr. Polson died Tuesday, Feb. 17. He was born in Chesterfield County on Jan. 31, 1945. He was the son of the late Sandy and Kate Polson. Bozo, as he was affectionately known to his friends, was a member of the Society Hill Presbyterian Church. He retired from Goodson Construction Co. and in his spare time enjoyed fishing.

Mr. Polson is survived by his wife, Shirley Polson of the home; two sons, J.P. Polson and Sandy Polson, and his daughter, Teresa Brown; two sisters, Sherry Jernigan and Delores Dee Kelly. Also surviving are his six grandchildren, Zack, Jamie, Cameron, Ricky, Amanda and Ryan.

Memorials may be made to the Society Hill Presbyterian Church or the American Lung Association.

CAROL S. CATOE

Funeral services for Carol Speight Catoe, 48, were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at the chapel of Norton Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Browne officiating.

Burial was in Magnolia cemetery.

Mrs. Catoe died Tuesday, Feb. 10. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of Paul and Mary Carroll Speight.

Surviving are her husband, Randy Catoe of Hartsville; three daughters, Angie Gainey, Tonya Spell and Dawn Saverance, all of Hartsville; two sons, Ricky Catoe of Hartsville and Dac Catoe of Murrells Inlet; and 11 grandchildren.

She has a deceased brother, Pedro Speight.

ANNA LEE BRIGGS

Funeral services for Anna Lee Ervin Briggs will be held at 3 p.m. today, Feb. 20, 2004, at Jerusalem Baptist Church with the Rev. Isaac Johnson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. The family is receiving friends at the home of her sister, Daisy Weaver, of 314 Russell Road.

Mrs. Briggs died Monday, Feb. 16, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Darlington, a daughter of the late Bozie Sr. and Ruth Levan Ervin. She was educated in the public schools of Darlington County and was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church and a member of its Senior Choir.

Survivors are her husband, Almont Briggs Sr. of Columbia; three sons, Gregory (Deborah) Briggs, Stanley Keith Briggs, and Kenneth Briggs all of Hartsville; seven daughters, Gloria Briggs, Janice Briggs, Sharon Briggs, Hope (Robert) Sam, Katrina Briggs and Tamika (Ricky) Holloman, all of Hartsville, and Shawn (Gregory) Seymore of Rockingham, N.C.; Six brothers, Willie James Ervin of Far Rockaway, N.Y., Charles (Corine) Ervin of Columbia, Wade (Mary) Ervin of Far Rockaway, N.Y., James Ervin of Phoenix, Ariz., Robert (Sandra) Ervin of Hartsville and Larry (Vanessa) Ervin of Temple Hill, Md.; five sisters, Mary E. (Covel C.) Moore of Conway, Margaret McCray of Far Rockaway, N.Y., Doris (Harvey) Scott of Far Rockaway, N.Y., Sheevia (Charles) Randall of Chicago, Ill., and Daisy Weaver of Hartsville; 12 grandchildren and 12 great–grandchildren.
