CATHERINE BLACKMON

McBEE — Funeral services for Catherine Blackmon, 97, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Feb. 13, 2004, at Galilee Baptist Church in McBee. Burial will be in Pine Forest cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Blackmon died Friday, Feb. 6, at her residence after an illness. She was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Alexander and Nealy Clyburn Blackmon. She was educated in the Chesterfield public school system and was a member of Galilee Baptist Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Mary Ruth Chaplin Blackwell of the home; one granddaughter, Emma Jean (Jimmie) Stallings of Darlington; one grandson, Randolph Stallings; two step–grandchildren; two great–grandchildren; two great–great–grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives.

FRANCES SANSBURY

Funeral services for Frances Garland Register Sansbury, 85, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at Emmanuel Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Milton Frazier, the Rev. Steve Garland and the Rev. Dr. Gary Colboch will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Hospice Odyssey, 3870 Leeds Ave., Suite 109, Charleston, SC 29405.

Mrs. Sansbury died Wednesday, Feb. 11. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late James Buchanan and Olivia Bennett Garland. She was an honor graduate of Hartsville High School, formerly a member of Twitty United Methodist Church, and for 40 years an active member of Emmanuel Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher and prayer warrior. For most of her life she worked as a bookkeeper, working for Wilson and Pressley Coker Cotton Gins, and then for 32 years at Economy Heating and Air Conditioning Company.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Edward Mason Register, and is survived by her daughter Patricia Register O'Neil of Charleston; grandchildren, Dominique M. Barteet, Hal McClain Jr., Travis Chance McClain, John McClain; and four great–grandchildren.

She is also predeceased by her second husband of 26 years, Broadus D. Sansbury; a step–daughter, Faye S. Kelley, and a step–son, Broadus Bo Sansbury. She is survived by stepdaughters, Daphne S. Tedder of Hartsville, Shelby S. Russ of Maxton, N.C.; grandchildren, Ronnie Kelley, Deborah K. Butler, Lynn K. Rogers, Maxie Tedder, Andy Tedder, Carol T. Moore, Linda R. Brooks, Robert Russ Jr., Jody Russ, Scott Russ; 11 great–grandchildren; six great–great–grandchildren.

ROBERT M. GANDY JR.

SOCIETY HILL — A graveside service for Robert M. Gandy Jr., 82, will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, in the Welsh Neck Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington.

Mr. Gandy died Thursday, Feb. 12. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Robert M. and Sallie Vista Linton Gandy. He served in the U.S. Army and was a retired carpenter. Mr. Gandy was a member of the Society Hill Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include three brothers, Samuel A. Gandy of Bennettsville, Harvey W. Gandy of Society Hill and Brooks E. Gandy of Darlington; two sisters, Catherine G. Hill and Myrtle G. Keith, both of Society Hill; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends this evening, Feb. 13, from 6 to 7 at the funeral home.

J.B. TILLER

Graveside services for J. B. Tiller, 63, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Feb. 13, 2004, at Magnolia cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mr. Tiller died Wednesday, Feb. 11. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Clarence E. Tiller Sr. and Luerena Jernigan Tiller.

Surviving are his wife, Annette Vinson Tiller of Hartsville; two daughters, Mondora Tyler of Wagner and Amy Walters of Hartsville; a sister, Maybelle Howle of Hartsville; three brothers, Monroe Tiller of Rock Hill, Clarence E. Tiller Jr. of Darlington and Ray Tiller of Nashville, Tenn.; and three grandchildren.

CAROL S. CATOE

Funeral services for Carol Speight Catoe, 48, were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at the chapel of Norton Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Browne officiating.

Burial was in Magnolia cemetery.

Mrs. Catoe died Tuesday, Feb. 10. She was born in Darlington County, a son of Paul and Mary Carroll Speight.

Surviving are her husband, Randy Catoe of Hartsville; three daughters, Angie Gainey, Tonya Spell and Dawn Saverance, all of Hartsville; two sons, Ricky Catoe of Hartsville and Dac Catoe of Murrells Inlet; and 11 grandchildren.

She has a deceased brother, Pedro Speight.

JESSIE DUNDY

LYDIA — Jessie Dundy, 81, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, in a Columbia Nursing Home after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the home of her son, Hercules Lee Dundy, 5713 Indian Branch Road, Lydia.

LEROY CROXTON JR.

KERSHAW — Funeral services for Leroy Spring Croxton Jr., 85, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 10, 2004, in the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Bryant Fersner officiating. Burial followed in the Kershaw City cemetery, directed by Baker Funeral Home of Kershaw.

Mr. Croxton, son of the late Leroy Springs Sr. and Blanche Sowell Croxton, died Monday, June 7. Born in Kershaw, he was a graduate of Kershaw High School and Wake Forest College. He served as a captain in the United States Army during World War II.

Mr. Croxton retired from H & S Lumber Company in Lake Wylie. He was active in the Kershaw Jaycees and Lions Club. He was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years. Mr. Croxton also served as a volunteer for the Meals–On–Wheels program.

Mr. Croxton is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carolyn Perry Croxton; three daughters, Mrs. Charles E. (Carol Ann) Craft of Gainesville, Ga., Mrs. E. Earle (Linda) Davis of Lexington and Mrs. Robert A. (Terry) Arneson of Columbia; five grandchildren, Jennifer Craft Kinsey, James E. Davis, Jessica L. Davis, Ryan C. Davis and Angela M. Arneson; one great–grandchild, Skyler Kinsey; and one sister, Carolyn C. West of Hartsville. He was predeceased by his brother, Lewis Croxton.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, PO Box 67, Kershaw, SC 29067 or Hospice of Kershaw County, 2001 W. Dekalb St., Camden, SC 29020.

MARTHA E. LENNON

OAK ISLAND, N.C. — Martha Cary Eppes Lennon, 88, a former resident, died Monday, June 7, 2004, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center. Interment will be private at a later time. Peacock–Newnam Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lennon was born Aug. 2, 1915, in Greenville, S.C., daughter of the late James Frank and Vena Adams Eppes. After many moves, Mrs. Lennon settled on Oak Island in 1976. During World War II, Martha was known for knitting one item per week for our enlisted men. Over the past 20 years, she was able to travel the world. Mrs. Lennon was very involved in civic and church activities which included being a member of Oak Island Presbyterian Church women's group and fund–raising for hospice. She was a charter member of Oak Island Presbyterian Church and very active in Emmaus.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Crom Lennon of the home; two children, a daughter, Lucy (Tom) Shearer of Lake Norman, N.C., and a son, William Lennon; one brother, James Albert Eppes of Greenville; one sister, Mary Ann Eppes McCullough of Greenville; numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Lennon was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert Hardy Eppes, Judge Frank Eppes and Francis Thornton Eppes.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Mrs. Lennon on June 21, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Oak Island Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to Oak Island Presbyterian Church or to Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center.

SUSIANNA R. BESS

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Susianna Reese Bess will be held at 1 p.m. today, June 11, 2004, in Lawson Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Ronald Carter, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.

Mrs. Bess, widow of Leroy Bess, died Monday, June 7, at the home of her daughter after an illness. She was born in Lee County, a daughter of the late March and Louise McDuffie Reese. She was educated in the Lee County public schools. At an early age, she was a member of Gum Spring Baptist Church in Bishopville and later joined Lawson Grove Baptist Church where she served as a member of the Gospel Choir and the missionary of the church. She was a member of Snow Hill Chapter No. 312 Order of the Eastern Star. She worked with the Darlington County School District janitorial services.

Survivors include a daughter, Alice B. Gee of Darlington; two sons, McKenzie (Mary) Bess and Albert Bess, both of Darlington; a sister, Louise Dessaure of Philadelphia, Pa.; three sisters–in–law, Queen Esther James of Brooklyn, N.Y., Tressie Lee Bess and Elsie Bess, both of Darlington; 15 grandchildren; 30 great–grandchildren; 14 great–great–grandchildren; daughters–in–law, nieces, nephews; and two dear friends, Bernetha Lighty and Cora Taylor.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Alphonso Bess and Hazel Bess.

The family is receiving friends at the home of her daughter, Alice Gee, at 216 Chalmers St., Darlington.

BETTY LUE HUNTER

A graveside service for Betty Lue Hunter was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 10, 2004, in Greenlawn cemetery with the Rev. Bernard Page officiating, directed by Boatwright's Chapel On Main of Darlington.

Mrs. Hunter was born April 12, 1955, in Little Rock, Ark., to Edward Stevenson and the late Luvenia Stevenson. She resided in Hartford, Conn., and Georgetown, before relocating to Hartsville. She was a homemaker, loved being the center of attention and was always willing to make you smile.

Surviving in addition to her father, are three children, Tyshawn and Shauntay Hunter and Nicole (Chad) Thomas; nine grandchildren; three sisters, Elaine Stevenson, Belinda (Junior) Cooper and Sherrie (Therone) Prindle; three brothers, John Curtis, and Tommy Stevenson; nieces, nephews, great–nieces and great–nephews; a close friend, Mona Knowlin, and many other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by a sister, Joann Betts.

LEROY JACKSON

Leroy Jackson, 52, died Thursday, June 3, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

EVANS BENNETT

Funeral services for Evans Bennett, 41, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 8, 2004, at Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel with pastor Derrick Haynes officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Bennett died Wednesday, June 2, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Jannie Bennett and George Washington Briggs. He was a graduate of Butler High School and was employed with Stingray Boat Company.

Surviving are his wife, Deborah Capers Bennett of Hartsville; two sons, Jason Capers of Columbia and Marquise Pendergrass of Hartsville; one brother, Leroy Bennett of Bennettsville, father – and mother– in– law, Hayes and Viola Capers of Hartsville and a host of other close relatives and friends.

MAMIE H. GERALD

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Mamie Holloway Gerald will be held at 11 a.m. today, June 4, 2004, at Bethel A.M.E. Church with the Rev. H. L. Temoney, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Lawson Grove Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Mitchell– Josey Funeral Home.

Mrs. Gerald died Saturday, May 29, in a Florence hospital as a result of an auto accident. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Tom and Martha Evans Holloway. She was the widow of Willie Gerald Jr.

She received her formal education in the Darlington County public schools and was a member of Lawson Grove Baptist Church. She was employed with the Darlington County School District as a school crossing guard until she retired.

Survivors include her son, Melvin (Rosa Lee) Gerald of Darlington; two grandchildren, Melvin Gerald Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va., and Melonie Gerald of San Antonio, Texas; several great– grandchildren; in– laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A son, Richard Gerald, preceded her in death.

The family is receiving friends at the residence at 231 Shuler St., Darlington.
