ROBERT J. ROGERS

DARLINGTON — A memorial service for Robert J. Rogers, 63, will be held at 11 a.m. today, June 4, 2004, in the chapel at Kistler– Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington.

Mr. Rogers died Tuesday, June 2, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Dillon County, a son of the late Lenue and Florence Strickland Rogers. He was a painter and enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include two sons, Marty Rogers and George Rogers; two sisters, Sue Hall and Betty Botsford; and five grandchildren.

WILLIAM A. HAYDEN SR.

SUMTER — Funeral services for William Albert Hayden Sr., 62, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 5, 2004, in the Boulevard Church of Nazarene with the Revs. Bill Watts and Bill Carter officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Sumter cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, Friday, at Elmore– Cannon– Stephens Funeral Home in Sumter and at other times at the residence, 120 Phifer St., Sumter. Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hayden, husband of Beatrice Ray Hayden, died Tuesday, June 1, in the Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia. Born June 1, 1942, in Hartsville, he was a son of the late Mary Hayden Douglas. He was a retired disabled U.S. Army veteran, retired from Sumter Builders and was a member of Boulevard Church of Nazarene.

He was preceded in death by step– father, Luke Douglas, and brother, Heyward C. Douglas.

Surviving besides his wife of Sumter are two daughters, Sally (George) Shirer of Sumter, Debbie (Mark) Covert of Soda Springs, Idaho; three sons, Bill (Kristin) Hayden Jr., Jody (Darlene) Parks and Fred (Joyce) Parks of Sumter; three brothers, Billy (Judy) Douglas and Danny (Robin) Douglas, of Camden, and Glenn (Betty) Douglas of Sumter; four sisters, Elaine (Steve) Smith of Sumter, Nina (Tom) Jerome of Oklahoma City, Okla., Linda (Jeff) Groth of Raleigh, N.C., and Cynthia Griffin of Sumter; 14 grandchildren and five great– grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Boulevard Church of Nazarene, PO Box 1405, Sumter, SC 29151.

GLADYS S. VAUGHAN

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Gladys S. Vaughan, 90, will be held at 3 p.m. today, June 4, 2004, in the chapel of Kistler– Hardee Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Grove Hill cemetery.

Mrs. Vaughan died Tuesday, June 1, in a local nursing home after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Fredric Thomas and Laura Gandy Siskron. She was the widow of Wilbur H. Vaughan Sr., and was a homemaker. Mrs. Vaughan was a member of the First Baptist Church for 77 years and was a Life Member of St. David's Chapter No. 163, Order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving are two sons, Wilbur H. (Donna B.) Vaughan Jr. and David F. Vaughan, both of Darlington; a granddaughter, Laura V. (Scott) Eagerton of Florence; a grandson, Richard C. Vaughan of Darlington and several nieces and nephews.

MARTHA MACK

Funeral services for Martha Mae Mack, 72, will be held at 4 p.m. today, June 4, 2004, at Lawson Grove Baptist Church with Dr. Ron Carter officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Ms. Mack died Monday, May 31, at her residence. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Walter and Verselle Ham Mack. She received her education in the Darlington County public school system. She was also a graduate of Lincoln Medical School and was employed as a nurse in various locations in the area.

Surviving are her daughter, Loretta (Carlton) Swinton of Randolph, Mass.; one sister, Margaret Spellman of Riverhead, N.Y., and a host of other close relatives and friends.

CHRISTINE BRISTOW

Funeral services for Christine Hart Bristow, 82, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 29, 2004, at New Providence Baptist Church with the Revs. Mitchell Britt and Todd Jeffords officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the New Providence Baptist Church, 1884 Antioch Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550 or the Salvation Army, 215 N. 5th St., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Bristow, widow of Olive Lee Bristow Jr., died Wednesday, May 26, 2004. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Claude and Minnie Tolar Hart. Her father was the town photographer from 1908 to 1948. She was a member and Sunday school teacher at New Providence Baptist Church and also a youth director at Morton Presbyterian Church. She was previously employed with Carolina Power & Light for 16 years and wrote and published four books of poetry.

Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Olive Lee and Jean Bristow III of Greenville; daughter and son–in–law, Burney and Jerry S. Byrd Jr. of Hartsville; sister, Minnie Britt of Elizabethtown, N.C.; brothers and sisters–in–law, Louis R. Hart of San Jose, Costa Rica, Leon and Dina Hart of Hartsville, Major and Margie Hart of Hartsville; granddaughter and spouse, Denise Bristow and John Owen.

DORIS BYRD

Memorial services for Doris Katherine Monkey Parnell Byrd, 65, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 31, 2004, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Jay Gibson. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves, Florence, SC 29506.

Mrs. Byrd died Saturday, May 29, 2004. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of Mary Jordan Parnell Register and the late James Drew Parnell. She was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Churchand worked at Byerly Hospital for 40 years as an RN nursing supervisor.

Surviving are her husband, Paul Byrd of Hartsville; sons and daughters–in–law, Jimmy and Judy Byrd, Dennis Byrd, Mike Speck and Renee Gainey, all of Hartsville; daughter, Paula Byrd of Charleston; sister and brother–in–law, Ada P. Jay Bird and Jessie Buddy Watford of Darlington; grandchildren, Chandler Byrd, Evan Byrd, Jonathan Gainey and Brittany Gainey.

DORTHA L. FULMER

FLORENCE — Funeral services for Dortha Lucille Dot Clark Turner Fulmer, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at Calvary Baptist Church, Florence. Interment followed at the mausoleum at Florence Memorial Gardens, directed by Walters–Powell Funeral Home.

Memorials may be given to Calvary Baptist Church, 915 Cherokee Road, Florence, 29501, or to the charity of one's choice.

Mrs. Fulmer died Friday, May 28, at Bethea Baptist Health Care, after a long illness. She was born Dec. 23, 1920, in Chesterfield County. She was the seventh of 13 children born to the late Rev. Early Walker Clark and Leila McLaughlin Clark. After graduating from McBee High School in 1939, she attended Furman University, and graduated from Coker College in 1948. She received her nurse's training at Columbia Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1951.

On Nov. 23, 1950, she married Charles F. Turner and spent the early years of marriage in Drexel and Shelby, N.C., where she organized and coordinated the Shelby School of Practical Nursing. They moved to Florence in 1962, and she taught at McLeod Infirmary School of Nursing.

In 1963, Mrs. Turner developed and coordinated the Florence Practical Nursing Program at McClenaghan High School. She served as tuberculosis nurse for Florence County Health Department from 1966 until 1970. Then she was promoted to Maternal–Child Care Program Specialists with the Pee Dee District of the South Carolina State Health Department and served in this capacity until her retirement in 1983. She served as interim director of nursing on the Bethea Infirmary staff in 1988–1989. In April 1988, she was awarded the title of Master Gardener by Clemson University.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she previously served as director of the Adult V Sunday School Department. She was a member of garden clubs and the Triple S Club.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Charles F. Turner Sr., who died in 1996; brothers, Levan Clark and Robert Clark; sisters, Annie Lee Segars, Rose Hewitt, Elizabeth Clark, Lydia Carter, June Gainey and Grace Tucker.

In addition to a host of friends, she is survived by her husband, L. T. Jack Fulmer of Florence; three children, Beverly Turner (Charles) Byers of Darlington, Charles F. Chuck (Jutta) Turner Jr. of Greeley, Colo., and Marilyn Turner Salaman (Bob) Siele of Salem, Mo.; her grandchildren, Charles Chet (Nancy) Byers of Ackworth, Ga., Robyn Byers Hoffmeyer of Florence, Michael Darrin Byers of Moreland, Ga., Karyn Byers (Patrick) Gabbey of Lumberton, N.C., and Kurt Salaman of Salem, Mo.; her great–grandchildren, Chris Byers of Easley, Stacy and Brandon Hoffmeyer of Florence; Brooke, Beth and Joshua Gabbey of Lumberton, N.C.; Brittany and Brandi Byers of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Taylor Dee Byers of Spartanburg; two sisters, Lois Thompson Bosher of Florence and Helen Adams of Albermarle, N.C.; two brothers, Kenneth Clark of Columbia and Howard (Shelby) Clark of Peebles, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews, including Barbara (Earl) Ammons of Darlington.

TOMMY STOGNER

Graveside services for Edwin Tommy Stogner, 76, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at Magnolia cemetery with the Rev. J.L. Dutton officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Stogner died Saturday, May 29. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Edwin Rhodes and Annie Kilgore Stogner. He worked as the projector operator for the Hartsville Theater for all of his adult life.

Surviving are his son, Edwin J. Smith, and daughter, Crystal S. Hall, both of Hartsville.

LOUELLA GANDY SMITH

Funeral services for Louella Gandy Smith, 83, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at Emmanuel Baptist Church with the Revs. Dr. Gary Colboch and Dr. Milton G. Frazier officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Smith, widow of Edward Jack Smith, died Saturday, May 29. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late James Dowell Gandy Sr. and Coela Tyner Gandy. Mrs. Smith was a member of Emmanuel Baptist church where she was a Sunday school teacher for more than 20 years. She and her husband owned and operated E. Jack Smith Insurance Agency of Nationwide for more than 30 years.

Survivors include her daughter and son–in–law, Jacquelyn S. and John Laney Melton Jr. of Cheraw; son and daughter–in–law, D. Jack and Cindy Smith of Hartsville; sisters, Ruby Carter, Katherine Melton and Sally Faile, all of Hartsville; brother, Lawrence Gandy of Hartsville; five grandchildren and nine great–grandchildren.

MIRIAM ROLFE TRUETT

Graveside services for Miriam Rolfe Truett, 90, widow of Gettis W. Truett, will be held today, June 2, 2004, at 3 p.m. in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Truett died May 30. She was born in Orangeburg County, a daughter of the late William Hubert and Leola Polin Rolfe. She was a member of Mt. Elon Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son, David Truett of Hartsville; sister, Catherine Jennings of Hartsville; brothers, Hugh Rolfe of Greenville, Albert and Charles G. Rolfe, both of Hartsville, and David Earle Rolfe of Darlington; two grandchildren and four great–grandchildren.

JOSEPH M. TAFT

GREENVILLE, N.C. — Funeral services for Joseph Marvin Taft, 98, were conducted Friday, May 28, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Greenwood cemetery, directed by Wilkerson Funeral Home of Greenville, N.C.

Mr. Taft died Wednesday, May 26, at his home. He was a native and lifelong resident of Greenville and was the son of the late Edmund Hoover and Gertrude Chesson Taft. After completing his education, he began working in the family business, Taft Furniture Company, where he was active for more than 70 years. Mr. Taft served as a member for the Greenville City Council for eight years. He served on the Greenville School Board for 21 years and served on the Board of Trustees for Pitt Community College for 26 years. He was a member of Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church for virtually all of his life where he served in various capacities, including serving as chairman of the Administrative Board.

Mr. Taft joined the Kiwanis Club of Greenville at the age of 22, serving as president in 1943. In 1996 he was honored with the George F. Hixon Award, and in 2002, was honored for his 75 years of service in Kiwanis.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Taft was preceded in death by a son, Jasper Winslow Taft; brothers, William H. Taft and E. Hoover Taft Jr.; and sisters, Gertrude Massey and Florence Blount.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Louise Winslow Taft; daughter, Anna Taft Parker and husband, Charles, of Fuquay–Varina, N.C.; sons, Joseph M. Taft Jr. and wife, Camilla, of Greenville, Robert E. Taft and wife, Rebecca, of Hartsville, Louis W. Taft and wife, Pam, of Greenville, and Edgar W. Taft of Greenville; a former daughter–in–law, Penny Taft of Greenville; 10 grandchildren, Lou Taft Welch, Camilla Taft Hicks, Martha Taft Kiesling, Joseph M. Taft III, Edwin Parker, John Parker, Natalie Taft, Benjamin Taft, Christopher Taft and Janie Taft; and six great–grandchildren.

Graveside services for Fatima Aiken Vaughn, 75, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 30, 2004, at Magnolia cemetery with the Rev. Kenny Lynch officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the McLeod Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 East Cheves St., Florence SC 29506.

Mrs. Vaughn died Friday, May 28. Born in Hendersonville, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Joseph Argyle and Ollie Mae Morgan Aiken.

Surviving are her sons and daughter–in–law, Clyde C. and Carolyn Vaughn Jr. and Gary Argyle Vaughn, all of Hartsville; daughters and son–in–law, Chiquita Vaughn and Curtis Hart of Columbia, Brenda Vaughn Ciuffetelli of Hartsville; honorary sister and brother–in–law, Veronica and Jessie Sweezy of Saluda, N.C.; six grandchildren and seven great–grandchildren.

PAULETTE GAINEY CROWLEY

PATRICK — Funeral services for Paulette Gainey Crowley, 50, will be held on Thursday, May 24, 2004, at Green Hill Church of God of Prophecy, directed by Miller–Rivers–Caulder Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Crowley died Tuesday, May 25. She was born in Hartsville, a daughter of the late Russell and Virginia Johnson Crowley. She was a retired employee of INA USA and was a member of Green Hill Church of God of Prophecy.

Mrs. Crowley was preceded in death by her brother, Danny Gainey and by her sister, Brenda Gainey Hicks.

Surviving are her husband Ronnie J. Crowley of the home; niece and nephew Lynn Hicks and Chad Hicks, both of Hartsville; several other nieces and nephews; one uncle and six aunts.
