DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Doris Gainey Ham, 55, will be held at 3 p.m. today, May 26, 2004, at Dovesville Church of God with interment following in the church cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Ham died Monday morning, May 24, at her residence. She was born in Darlington County, daughter of Kathleen Hall Gainey Parnell and the late Monroe Gainey. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of Bishopville Church of God.
Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband, Allen G. Ham of Darlington; a son, Gene Ham of Darlington; a daughter, Sheila Ham of Darlington; a grandson, Monroe Ham; three brothers, Robert, Charlie and Wayne Gainey, all of Dovesville; three–sisters, Carolyn Odom, Wanda Wilson and Donna Register, all of Dovesville; a step–father, Harvey Parnell; a step–son Rex Parnell; two step sisters, Carolyn Lunsford and Barbara Small.
The family will receive friends at 3405 Powerline Drive in Dovesville.
EMMIE LOUISE WALTERS
McBEE — Funeral services for Emmie Louise Walters, 82, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 23, 2004, in the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home. Burial followed in Bethel Methodist Church cemetery.
Mrs. Walters died Thurs–day, May 20. She was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Charlie and Lemmie Warren Walters. She was retired from Sonoco Products Co. after 38 years of service and was a member of the Old Timers Club.
Survivors include her brother, Charles Walters of Camden; several nieces and nephews.
JESSIE LEE GIBSON
Funeral services for Jessie Lee Gibson were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 22, 2004, at Nazareth Apostolic Holiness Church. Entomb–ment followed in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Hartsville.
Mrs. Gibson died Monday May, 17, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. She was born in Darlington County on August 11, 1935, a daughter of the late Bossie Johnson and Julia Copeland Johnson. She was educated in the public schools of the county and was a graduate of Butler High School. She was married
to Ernest Gibson and this union was blessed with five children. One of her children, Frederick, preceded her in death. She was employed for General Electric Manufacturing Co. in Bridgeport, Conn., until she retired with more than 20 years of service. After her retirement she and her husband moved back to Hartsville and resided in the Centerville Community.
While in Connecticut, she was a member of the Fountain of Youth Bibleway Worldwide. She was a member and president of the Usher Board, a member of the Missionary Society and she served as the Sunday school superintendent. Later, she joined the Mt. Olive Holiness Church in Bridgeport, Conn. After returning to Hartsville, she established membership at Nazareth Apostolic Church.
She is survived by her husband, Ernest Gibson Sr. of the home; a son, Ernest (Isadora) Gibson Jr. of Hartsville; three daughters, Doris Griffin of Darlington, Vanessa Gibson and Shelby Johnson, both of Bridgeport, Conn.; three sisters, Alta Mae (Jack) Bruce of Darlington, Millie Frazier of Hartsville and Frances (Fred–die) Jackson of Bridgeport, Conn.; 12 grandchildren; 16 great–grandchildren; a host of godchildren and many other relatives and dear friends.
WILLIAM FLOYD SAYLES
William Floyd Sayles died on Saturday, May 22 at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. The family will receive friends at the home of his son, Herbert (Barbara) Sayles of 610 S. Sixth St., Hartsville. Hines Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of all arrangements.
ERNEST FITZGERALD STEEN
BENNETTSVILLE — Funeral services for Ernest Fitzgerald Steen, 42, were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 24, 2004, in the Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home Chapel in Darlington conducted by the Rev. Randy Jackson. Burial followed in Grove Hill cemetery in Darlington.
Mr. Steen died Friday, May 21. He was born in Florence County, a son of Alex Steen and the late Mildred Skipper Steen. He was an electrician and was a beloved son and brother.
Surviving in addition to his father of Bennettsville are one daughter, Mikayla Lauren Steen of Chesterfield; one sister, Joanne (Joe) Barrentine of Darlington; one brother, Noel Steen of Bennettsville; grandmother, Thelma Skipper Carnes of Darlington; one niece, Kansas Steen of Bennettsville; two nephews, Jeremy and Jonathan Barrentine of Darlington; and a sister–in–law, Carol Steen.

JAMES KEELS BYRD SR.
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for James Keels Byrd Sr., 75, were held at 3 p.m. on Monday, May 24, 2004, at Trinity United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Timothy Rogers and directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home. Burial followed in Grove Hill cemetery.
Mr. Byrd died Saturday, May 24. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Whit Millen and Josie Kirby Byrd. He graduated from St. John's High School. He farmed and was employed by Sonoco Products Com–pany for more than 43 years. He was a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Phillips Sunday School Class. He loved his church and served it in many capacities.
Mr. Byrd was preceded in death by a son, Marshall David Mark Byrd, and a brother, Whit Millen Byrd Jr.
Surviving are his wife, Doris Marshall Byrd of the home; one son, Jamie (Elaine) Byrd of Darlington; one daughter, Linda (Jimmie) Williams of Darlington; one brother, Cecil W. (Pat) Byrd of Darlington; four grandchildren, Melissa McClatchey, Merrie Leigh (Jody) Blaylock, Elizabeth Williams and Sarah Williams; and one great–grandchild, Patrick (Chance) McClatchey.

LEE COIT SMITH
Funeral services for Lee Coit Smith, 65, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 22, 2004, at Nazareth Apostolic Church with Bishop Vera M. Davis officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Smith died Tuesday, May 18, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late James and Louise Mark Hickman. He was a graduate of Butler High School and retired from United Van Lines Company.
Surviving are his wife, Patsy Jackson Smith of Hartsville; three daughters, Annette Hickman and Diana H. Brown, both of Hartsville, and Shirley Scott of North Carolina; two sons, Robert Hickman of Kannapolis, N.C., and Leon Smith of Hartsville; 11 grandchildren.
MAMIE C. GAINEY
DARLINGTON — Graveside services for Mamie Collins Gainey, 91, will be held at 4 p.m. today, May 21, 2004, at Black Creek Baptist Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Randy Woods and directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.
Mrs. Gainey died Wednesday, May 19. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Tollie and Winnie Weinberg Collins. She retired from Dixie Cup and was a member of Black Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include three nephews, Calvin (Sue Ellen) Jeffords and William Red (Nancy) Jeffords, both of Dovesville, and Joel (Vickie) Tyner of Florence; a number of great–nieces and nephews and two special caregivers, Sue Ellen and Kathy Jeffords.

VIRGINIA MIMS
Funeral services for Virginia King Mims, 79, will be held at 4 p.m. today, May 21, 2004, at Union United Methodist Church. The Rev. Roger Dodds will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506, or the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, PO Box 650309, Dallas, TX 75265–0309, or Union United Methodist Church, PO Box 398, McBee, SC 29101.
Mrs. Mims, widow of W. Claude Mims, died Tuesday, May 18. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Hudson and Pearl Blackwell King. She was a member of Union United Methodist Church, the Lore McCoy Sunday school class and was active in the United Methodist Women's Organization. She was a loving, caring, giving, and devoted mother, grandmother and sister.
Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Mr. and Mrs. William C. Mims Jr. of Crossville, Tenn.; daughter and son–in–law, Ginger and Barry Houghtalen of Tallahassee, Fla.; sister, Malverea Watkins of Hartsville; brothers, Joe King and Gary King, both of Hartsville; granddaughter, Kaley Mims.
CATHERINE ROBINSON
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Catherine W. Koot Robinson were held at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 20, 2004, at Flat Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Matthew Robinson officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Rona Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mrs. Robinson died Sunday, May 16, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Shiver and Annie Mae Brown Williams. She received her formal education in the Darlington County public school. She was a member of Flat Creek Baptist Church where she served as a member of the Missionary and past member of the choir. She was employed at Galey & Lord Inc. of Society Hill as a custodian until she retired.
Mrs. Robinson was preceded in death by a daughter, Marilyn.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Joseph James Robinson of the home; 10 children, Flouncey (Samuel) Dixon Jr., Loretta (Isaac) Dixon, James (Eliza) Robinson, Richard Robinson, David (Pauline) Robinson, Annie Mae Joint, Anthony (Rose) Robinson, Kenneth Robinson, all of Darlington, Robert (Mary) Robinson of Hinesville, Ga., and Imogene (William) Glover of Florence; three brothers, Willie (Cora) Williams of Baltimore, Md., Maxie Rush of Society Hill and Arthur (Lucy) Williamson of Darlington; step–sisters and brothers; six–sisters–in–law, Elvira Smith, Katie M. Robinson, Betty Robinson, all of Darlington, Ruth Baker of Philadelphia, Pa., Rebecca Robinson of New York and Elizabeth Williams of Winston–Salem, N.C.; 26 grandchildren; 32 great–grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
MARY A. TAYLOR
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Mary Agnes Hill Sister Taylor were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 20, 2004, at Lee Street Church of God with the Rev. K. C. Brown officiating. Burial followed in Faith Memorial Gardens, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mrs. Taylor died Friday, May 14, at her residence after a brief illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late James and Drucilla Jackson Hill. She was a graduate of Mayo High School, class of 1954, where she was crowned Miss Mayo 1953–1954. At an early age, she was a member of Lee Street Church of God. She was employed at the Pyramid (now known as MSD of Darlington) , and later, she worked at Electric Motors in Florence.
She was married
to Perry Taylor, and to this union, five children were born. A daughter, Valerie, preceded her in death.
Survivors include four children, Natalie Campbell, Vanessa (Sidney) Damon, Cecil Taylor and Perry Mark Taylor, all of Darlington; eight grandchildren, Kesha (Mike) Davis, Valerie Campbell, Brittany, NyAsia, Rashawn, Dontre, Treyon and Dr. Kendra Taylor; four great–grandchildren, Michael, Makayla, Maki and Jordan; two sisters, Drucilla Peoples of Darlington, Sally Hill Peters–Liverpool of Stone Mountain, Ga.; two brothers, Fleetwood Hill of Lithonia, Ga., and Jimmy (Flove) Hill of Atlanta, Ga.; an aunt, Elouise Coe of Santa Anna, Calif.; an uncle, McIver (Burle) Jackson of Pittsburgh, Pa.; a sister–in–law, Fannie Hudson of Darlington; a host of nieces and nephews.
JAMES E. STEVENS
KERSHAW — Funeral services for James Eugene Stevens, 79, were held at 3 pm. Saturday, May 15, 2004, at Tabernacle Methodist Church with the Rev. William Griggs officiating. Burial was in the Tabernacle Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Cauthen Funeral Home of Kershaw.
Mr. Stevens passed away Thursday, May 13, at the Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster. He was born Aug. 21, 1924, in Chesterfield County, a son of the late James Glavester and Cora Dixon Stevens.
Mr. Stevens is survived by his wife, Ida Belle Wilkes Stevens; four sons, Thomas E. Stevens, George A. Stevens, Bobby Joe Stevens and James G. Stevens, all of Kershaw; two daughters, Katie S. (Edward) Pair of Lancaster and Daphine S. (Johnny) Black of Ruby; three sisters, Betty Grace (Ray) Lyles of Leesville, Lela S. Dixon of Society Hill and Annie Mae (Melvin) Dixon of Kershaw; four grandchildren, Austin Pair, Jeb Pair, Benjie Stevens and Kristie Davis; and two great–grandchildren, Preston Davis and Shelby Davis.

WILBERT LEE BENJAMIN
BALTIMORE, Md.— Funeral services for Wilbert Lee Benjamin, 54, formerly of Society Hill, were held at 12 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at Vaughn C. Greene Funeral Services Chapel in Baltimore, Md., with burial in Mt. Zion cemetery.
Mr. Benjamin died Wednesday, May 12. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Henry and Lula Graham Benjamin Sr. He was a graduate of Rosenwald High School and was a member of New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. Mr. Benjamin was employed with Bethlehem Steel Company with more than 24 years of service.
Surviving are his wife, Charmaine Ponzo Benjamin of Baltimore, Md.; four daughters, Tabitha, Chawnice, Charmia and Levonia; two sons, James and MuKenji; five brothers, Henry (Margaret) Benjamin Jr. and Joshua Benjamin, both of Darlington, Clarence (Mary) Benjamin, Ernest Benjamin and Eugene (Juanita) Benjamin, all of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Ethel Benjamin, Lula Mae (Clarence) Stephens and Natalie Phillips, all of Darlington; an uncle, Luke (Ruth) Benjamin of Hartsville and eight grandchildren.
HARRY THOMAS
Memorial services for Harry Thomas, 58, were 1 p.m. Monday, May 10, 2004, in the Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel, conducted by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Thomas died Thursday, May 6, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Hartsville, a son of the late Edward J. and Jessie Mae Thomas Wards.
Surviving other than his father of Hartsville are one sister, Monica Ward of Hartsville, a host of other close relatives and friends.
