WYLIE JACK McNEESE JR.

LEXINGTON — Funeral services for Wylie Jack McNeese Jr., 50, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 6, in the chapel of Norton Funeral Home in Hartsville, with the Rev. John C. Smith Jr. officiating.

Mr. McNeese died Monday, May 3. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Elizabeth (Tinker) Hutchinson McNeese King and the late Wylie Jack McNeese Sr. He was owner and operator of Palmetto Controls and was a graduate of Hartsville High School.

Surviving are his wife, Karen Looney McNeese of Lexington; his mother of Hartsville; sons, Joseph and Benjamin McNeese; brother, Rick McNeese of Myrtle Beach; paternal grandmother, Cleo McNeese of Darlington.

CREOLA GAINEY

Funeral services for Creola Smith Gainey Pack, 84, will be held at 2 p.m. today, May 5, 2004, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Tim Hudson will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery.

Mrs. Pack, widow of Earnest Gainey and Robert Pack, died Monday, May 3, 2004. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph R. and Nellie Windham Smith. She was a member of Pocalla Holiness Church.

Surviving are her sons and daughters–in–law, Leslie Carroll Gainey of Hartsville, Richard and Shirley Gainey of Hartsville, Dale and Alice Gainey of Lamar, Betty Gainey of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Chrissy and Cleveland Holladay of Smithfield, Va.; sisters, Leola Woodworth of San Jose, Calif., Lois Jones of Hartsville; brothers and sisters–in–law, Joe Smith of Charlotte, N.C., Harrison and Mary Smith of Bamberg; 23 grandchildren; 35 great–grandchildren; 14 great–great–grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sons, Jay Gainey and Larry Gainey, and her daughter, Margie Gainey.

JORGEN JENSEN

CANTON, S.D. —Graveside services for Jorgen Harland Jensen, 91, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at the Lutheran cemetery, Canton, S.D., directed by Anderson & Sons Funeral Home, Canton. Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Mr. Jensen died Thursday, April 29. Born in Canton, S.D., he was a son of the late Martin and Elida Strand Jensen, who immigrated to Canton from Norway. He graduated from high school in Canton, served in England and France during World War II, was employed with McDonnell–Douglas Aircraft for 30 years and retired to Bishopville.

Surviving are his brother–in–law and friend, Jack Adams of Hartsville; nephews, John F. Adams Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla., Robert Bob Geller of Los Angeles, Calif., Mark Adams of Summerville; niece, Wanda A. Chandler of Hartsville; cousin, Omar Jensen of Inwood, S.D.

ALICE ROGERS

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Mary Alice Rogers were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 1, 2004, at Trinity United Methodist Church. Interment followed at Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Miss Rogers died Thursday, April 29, at Methodist Manor. She was born in Darlington on February 8, 1917, daughter of the late Arthur and Inez Jeffords Rogers. She was a graduate of St. John's High School, being Valedictorian of her class. She was also a member of the orchestra, the poetry club, chief proctor and a member of the National Honor Society. She graduated from Winthrop College with distinction earning a B.S. in business administration. She was also a member of Beta Alpha National Honorary Society Fraternity for students of commerce.

After graduating from Winthrop, Miss Rogers worked in Columbia for a few months with the Unemployment Compensation Commission, resigning to accept a job in Darlington with the law firm of Dargan and Paulling. After four years she accepted a job at Sonoco Products Company where she worked for 35 years as a secretary in the Purchasing Department before retiring.

Miss Rogers was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she was pianist in the Junior Department of the Sunday school for many years. She was also a former member of the Administrative Board.

Surviving are a sister, Virginia Rogers Abbott of Darlington and nieces and nephews, Bill (Carolyn) Abbott, Steve (Debra) Abbott, Karen Rogers and Kevin Rogers.

Memorials are suggested to the Arthritis Foundation, 1802 Sumter Street, Columbia, SC 29201 for research in fibersitis or to the Pipe Organ Fund of Trinity United Methodist Church, PO Box 16, Darlington, SC 29540.

TRAVIS SELPH

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Travis Selph, 54, were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 2004, in the chapel of Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Thomas O. Gainey. Burial followed in the Selph Family cemetery, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.

Mr. Selph died Wednesday, April 28, in a local hospital. He was born in Darlington County and was the son of the late Boland and Kerzie Watson Selph. He was a graduate of Hartsville High School and Florence–Darlington Technical College. Mr. Selph was a mechanical engineer and was the owner of Selph Engineering Consultants. He enjoyed working on his farm and riding horses. He especially enjoyed fishing and hunting with his grandson.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Broach Selph of the home; a son, Jason Travis Selph of Wyoming; a daughter, Chrissa Selph Crowshaw of Florence; two step–sons, Brad Foust of McCormick and David J. Foust of Darlington; two brothers, Marvin Selph of Hartsville and Tex (Wanda) Selph of Africa; a sister, Peggy (Thamar) Hill of Hartsville; and a grandson, Matthew Phillip Croshaw.

Memorials may be made to the American Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Blvd., Suite 1010, Rockville, Md. 20852.

HERMAN ALFORD

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Herman Red Eye Alford, 50, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at Greater Gethsemane Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ, Inc. with Bishop Kenneth J. Swaringer, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the Greater Gethsemane Devotional Garden, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.

Mr. Alford died Thursday, April 29, at his residence after a long illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Naomi Alford. After the passing of his mother, he was reared by his uncle and aunt, Marie Alford and the late Arthur Sonny Alford.

He received his formal education in the Darlington County public schools. He served his country in the U.S. Army. He was an employee of Goodson Construction Company and David Automotive. He was a member of the Greater Gethsemane Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ, Inc.

He was married to Irene Dixon and to this union a son, Eric Wesley Alford, was born and preceded him in death.

Survivors include his former wife, Irene Dixon Alford of Darlington; step–children, Jennifer (Silvaris) Hooks and David J. Dixon; a grandson, Javion James, all of Darlington; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Carrie Bailey of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a brother, Wesley (Marie) Alford of Raleigh N.C.; five sisters, Carrie Moses of Darlington, Hurlean Lunn of Baltimore, Md., Johnnie Mae Kennedy, Jacqueline Kennedy, both of Florence, and Mary Lee Williams of Bronx, N.Y., and Rose Kennedy of Columbia; two aunts, Loudella (Robert) Levenson and Dorethy Moose; an uncle Walter (Marjorie) Alford; two special grand–aunts, Sue Genia Josey and Marie Alford, both of Darlington; a special cousin, William (Eva Mae) Alford; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; and dear friends, Eddie and Carolyn Goodson.

JOSEPH DIXON

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Joseph Pa Dixon, 51, were held at 4:30 p.m. Monday, May 3, 2004, at Mt. Rona Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Matthew Robinson, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.

Mr. Dixon died Friday, April 30, at his residence after sudden illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Samuel Dixon Sr. and the late Aline Ross Dixon. He was a graduate of Rosenwald High School class of 1972. He was employed with McLeod Regional Medical Center as an O.R. technician for 18 years; later he worked at Tradewinds Logistics as a truck driver. He was a member of Mt. Rona Baptist Church where he served on the Trustee Board and the Jubilee Choir. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged.

Survivors include his father, Samuel Dixon Sr. of Darlington; his wife, Samantha Bass Dixon of the home; four children, Carlo (Andrea) Davis of Indiana, Fawna Richardson of the United Stated Army, William Bill Hutchinson and James BJ Thomas, both of the home; four brothers, Samuel (Flouncey) Dixon Jr., Isaac (Loretta) Dixon, Ernest (Betty) Dixon and Zack (Mary Louise) Dixon, all of Darlington; four sisters, Elease (Elijah) Rouse, Sandra Martin, Catherine Thomas and Diane (James) Johnson, all of Darlington; seven grandchildren, in–laws, three uncles, Raymond Dixon Sr., Zack Dixon and Wade Ross; five aunts, Martha Mae Sheff, Alease Jones, Annie Beaty, Betty Muldrow and Laura Kenan; two sisters–in–law, Rhea Carroll and Regina Hutchinson; a brother–in–law, John Bass; a host of nieces and nephews.

A sister, Mary Alice Scipio, preceded him in death.

RANDOLPH SHANNON JR.

SOCIETY HILL — Memorial services for Randolph Withers Shannon Jr., 98, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 2, 2004, at Grace Episcopal Church in Camden, with burial following in Quaker cemetery, Camden, with the Rev. Dean Phillip Linder officiating, directed by Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel. Memorials may be made to Camp Easy Breathing, c/o American Lung Association of SC, 1817 Gadsden St., Columbia, SC 29201.

Mr. Shannon died Thursday, April 29. Born in Jefferson, he was the son of the late Randolph Withers Shannon Sr. and Rosa Miller Shannon. Mr. Shannon was the founder of Shannon Pecan Company, a member of First Presbyterian Church in Bennettsville and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was also a member of the VFW in Florence.

Surviving are three children, Randolph W. Shannon III, of New Brighton, Pa., Susan Kershaw Shannon Spraker and Phillip McCants Shannon, both of Orlando, Fla.; grandchildren, William Foster Shannon, Benjamin Davis Shannon, Robert Randolph Daly, Carolina McCants Daly and Emma Elizabeth Shannon; sister, Betty Shannon Patterson of Columbia; three great–grandchildren, Skye Visco, Celeste Shannon and Ava Shannon and Marguerite Arve of West Minister, a loving friend.

He was predeceased by his wife, Lucy McCants Shannon; sister, Margaret Shannon Carter and a granddaughter, Beverly Diane Shannon.

WILSON WEATHERFORD

Funeral services for Wilson Weatherford, 82, will be held at 11 a.m. today, May 5, 2004, in the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home. Dr. Gary Colboch and the Rev. John Hamilton will officiate. Burial will be in the Westview Memorial cemetery.

Mr. Weatherford died Sunday, May 2. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Jessie Leo and Gerusha Gibson Weatherford. He was a Veteran of World War II, retired from Sonoco Products Co., was a member of the Old Timers Club and Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Juanita Robinson Weatherford of Hartsville; daughter, Barbara Graham Martin of Martinsville, Va.; sister, Leola Sims of Hartsville; grandson, Jay Graham of Hartsville; granddaughter, Dana Graham of Hartsville; two great –grandchildren.

DELOIS E. McCLAIN

Funeral services for Delois Elizabeth McClain, 66, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 6, 2004, at New Hopewell Baptist Church with the Rev. Calvin Daniels officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. McClain died Friday, April 30, 2004, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Springhope, N.C., a daughter of Maynor Hawkins and the late Pauline Gay Hawkins. She received her education at CC Spaulding High School in Springhope, N.C. She also attended Beauty Cultural School in New York. She was an early member of New Canaan Baptist Church in New York where she served as president of the North Carolina Club and on the Usher Board. She also worked as a health care professional in New York. She later became a member of New Hopewell Baptist Church, where she was also on the Usher Board.

Surviving are one daughter, Judy (Craig) McClain of Hartsville; three sons, Ingram McClain of Beaufort, Marque McClain of New Orleans, La., and Joseph McClain of the home; her father, Maynor Hawkins of Springhope, N.C.; three brothers, Lawrence (Henice) Hawkins and Raymond (Ernestine) Hawkins, both of Springhope, N.C., and Charles (Anna) Hawkins of Suitland, Md.; five sisters, Patricia Baines and Sarah Jean (Hilton) Mills, both of Springhope, N.C., Nancy Walker and Beverly (James) Hawkins, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Anne (Jerry) Perry of Elmont, NY; eight grandchildren; one great–grandchild; niece, nephews and host of other closer relatives and friends.

McBEE—Alice Prior, 61, died Friday at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

MARGUERITE BENJAMIN

Stella Marguerite Benjamin, 94, died Tuesday, May 4, 2004. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 6, at the First Baptist Church Chapel. The family will receive friends prior to the service in the Chapel. Complete funeral plans will be announced later by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

RUTH TIDWELL

Funeral services for Ruth Orthie O'Neil Tidwell, 52, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 6, 2004, at New Providence Baptist Church. The Rev. Jennings O'Neil will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends this evening, May 5, from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Tidwell died Tuesday, May 4. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Rax and Cannie Chapman O'Neil. She was a loving wife and a good mother.

Surviving are her husband, Joe Charles Tidwell of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Cannie Darlene and Dennis Morris of Ladson; sister and brother–in–law, Cannie Geraldine and Scott Nagle of Port Deposit, Md.; brother and sister–in–law, Jennings R. and Florence O'Neil of Winston–Salem, N.C.; grandchildren, Cannie Brooks Morris and Dennis Lee Morris.

PHYLLIS W. PLUM

Memorial services for Phyllis Weatherford Plum, 56, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 30, 2004, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Mark Lancaster will officiate, and the family will receive friends following the service.

Phyllis W. Plum

Mrs. Plum died Wednesday, April 28, 2004. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Hazel Leroy and Bernice McLeod Weatherford. She was a member of Whispering Pines Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Timothy Grant Plum of Hartsville; son, Robert Chad Beasley (a former Navy SEAL of the USS Kitty Hawk) of Lafayette, Ga; daughter, Mandy Michelle Beasley of Hartsville; brother, Hazel Butch Weatherford of Chesterfield; grandchild, Robert Dylan McLeod Beasley, a two–year honor student at Washington Street Elementary and a member of the Hartsville Community Bank baseball team; nephew, Michael Leroy Weatherford; great nieces, Samantha Weatherford and Amber Weatherford.

The family would like to thank Hartsville Drug for all of their support.
