LANCASTER—Funeral services for Evander Bay Gandy Jr., 50, formerly of Darlington, will be held at 4 p.m. today, April 30, 2004, in Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Bobby Miller, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. Gandy died Sunday, April 25, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Geraldine Green Gandy and the late Evander Gandy Sr. and reared by his grandparents, the late Jerry and Ola Rhodes Green Sr.
He was a graduate of Mayo High School Class of 1971 and continued his education at Florence–Darlington Technical College where he received a degree in welding. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
He relocated to Lancaster where he worked for 20 years at Frances Plant. Later, he was employed at Pee Dee Electic in Darlington.
Survivors include his devoted mother, Geraldine Green of Darlington; a sister, Sandra Green of Atlanta, Ga.; a special nephew, Lance Green of Darlington; a niece, Zandra Leverston of Atlanta, Ga.; an adopted sister, Latosha Douglas (Derrick) Harrell of Society Hill; a host of aunts, uncles and cousins; special friends, Andrew Thomas of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Kenneth Beckham and Larry Cauthen, both of Kershaw.
JESSIE B. ERVIN
DARLINGTON—Funeral services for Jessie B. Mack Ervin were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 29, 2004, in Shiloh United Methodist Church with the Rev. W. S. James, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mrs. Ervin, widow of Willie Ervin Sr., died Saturday, April 24, in a local nursing home after a long illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Willie and Almeta James Mack.
She received her formal education in the Darlington County public schools. Mrs. Ervin was a life member of Shiloh United Methodist Church where she served faithfully in many capacities until her health declined.
Survivors include a daughter, Gracie E. (Lawrence) Cabble of Richmond, Va.; two sons, Willie Ervin Jr. and Marvin (Ernestine) Mack, both of Darlington; 11 grandchildren; eight great–grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews.
A daughter, Lizzie Bell Smith, preceded her in death.
The family is receiving friends at the home of a son, Marvin Mack, of 1652 Syracuse Community Road, Darlington.
TRUDY B. HUGGINS
Funeral services for Trudy Boykin Huggins, 87, will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, April 30, 2004, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. David Surrett and Jason Moore will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday, April 29, 2004, from 5–7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association BTC 009, 181 East Evans St., Suite 206, Florence, SC 29506.
Mrs. Huggins, widow of Sam Huggins, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Harvey B. and Bessie Huggins Boykin. She attended the Church of God of Reformation. She was a dedicated mother, wonderful friend and a good Christian.
Surviving are her daughters and sons–in–law, Libby and David Gabis of Worcester, Mass., Brenda and Grady Sullivan of Hartsville, Jean Stratton of Hartsville; sons and daughter–in–law, Sam Bo Huggins of Hartsville, Larry and Sandra Huggins of Hartsville; grandchildren, Lisa Marie Lucas, Dr. Jennifer Stratton, Bill Sullivan, Tammy Gilbert, Sam Huggins, Alex Huggins, Darlene Milionis, Dwayne Gabis; twelve great grandchildren; one great–great grandchild. She was preceded in death by a grandchild, Davy Gabis Jr., and a great–grandchild, Kylie Gilbert.
ELMER M. MOSES
SOCIETY HILL—Funeral services for Elmer McFarlin Moses will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 2004, in Bethesda Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mrs. Moses died Monday, April 26, in a Hartsville hospital after a brief illness. She was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Ang and Sally Brown McFarlin.
She received her formal education in the Darlington County public schools and was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church where she served as an Usher.
Survivors include her husband, Woodrow Moses of the home; four daughters, Louvenia (Fred) Graham, Julia A. Moses, Evelyn Ellerbe and Sally James, all of Society Hill; three sons, Ang (Ester) Moses, Toney (Elizabeth) Moses and Joe Moses, all of Society Hill; three sisters, Julia Malachi of Fredrick, Va., Clemmie McFarlin of Ansonia, Conn., and Sallie M. Burns of Society Hill; a brother, John (Ruby) McFarlin of New Brunswick, N.J.; in–laws; 19 grandchildren; 26 great–grandchildren; four great–great grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews.
A son, Woodie Moses; two sisters, Annie Johnson and Louise Johnson; three brothers, Ervin, James and Joe McFarlin, preceded her in death.
The family is receiving friends at the home of a son and daughter–in–law, Toney and Elizabeth Moses, of 137 Williamson Drive, Society Hill.
ODELL KING
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Odell George King, 46, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Eugene Thomas Jr., pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. King died Friday, April 23, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Mary Agnes King and Sherman Richardson and was reared by his aunt, Rainey Mae McLendon, and grandparents, the late James Bud King and Agnes Moody Hudson King.
He received his formal education in the Darlington County public schools. He was a farmer at Norwood Farm for over 25 years. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include his companion, JoAnn Scott of the home; two sons, Brian Scott and Kevin Scott, both of Darlington; two brothers, John T. Bunny Lunn Jr. and Ronald (Georgia) Lunn, both of Darlington; a sister, Sharon Richardson of Darlington; a special aunt, Rainey Mae McLendon of Darlington; a host of other aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Ashley Michell Scott and a brother, Andrew Lunn.
ALINE C. HALL
Funeral services for Aline Crowley Hall, 72, will be held at 11 a.m. today, April 28, 2004, at Faith Baptist Church with the Revs. Randy Gulledge, Jackie Hinson and Billy Winburn officiating. Burial will be in the Gum Branch Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hall died Sunday, April 25. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late J. Carl and Carnell Atkinson Crowley. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Paul C. Hall; son Paul J. (Jill) Hall, all of Hartsville; two daughters, Jan (Buddy) Osborne of Hartsville and Debbie (Tony) Hardin of Jacksonville, N.C.; a sister, Betty Hall of Cassatt; a brother, Joe Crowley of McBee and five grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Lake Robinson Rescue Squad, 2364 W. Old Camden Road, Hartsville, SC 29550 and/or Faith Baptist Church 2316 Faith Road, Hartsville, SC 29550.
NOVICE P. ELLISON
DANVILLE, Va. — Funeral services for Novice Pettigrew Ellison, 94, were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 25, 2004, at First Baptist Church in Belton, conducted by Dr. T. Dale Lynch and directed by Sullivan–King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel. Interment was at Cedar Grove Baptist Church cemetery in Belton.
Mrs. Ellison, widow of William Jones Ellison, died Friday, April 23., after a short illness, at the Stratford Health Center in Danville, Va. She was born in McCormick, S.C., on Feb. 11, 1910, the eldest of 10 children of the late Robert M. Pettigrew and Maude Sligh Pettigrew. Mrs. Ellison lived most of her life in South Carolina (Hartsville, Belton and Anderson) before moving to Danville in 1994. Mrs. Ellison was a member of the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church of Danville, Va., since 1994, and while a resident of Belton she was a member of First Baptist Church.
She is survived by her son, Dr. R. Curtis (Alexandra) Ellison of Framingham, Mass.; son–in–law, Kenneth M. Miller of Danville, Va.; two grandchildren, Robert M. Ellison and Sarah A. Ellison, both of San Francisco, Calif.; one sister, Mattie Frances Ingram of Wilmington, N.C.; and five brothers, Robert H. Pettigrew, Gaines C. Pettigrew, James Edwin Pettigrew and Charles Allen Pettigrew, all of South Carolina, and Joseph Holland Pettigrew of San Diego, Calif.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mrs. Ellison's name to the Memorial Fund, Stratford House, 1111 Main Street, Danville, Va. 24541.
TRAVIS E. WATFORD
LEXINGTON — Services for Travis Evers Watford will be held at 2 p.m. today, April 28, 2004, at Caughman–Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Mr. Watford died Sunday, April 25. Born in Sumter, he was the son of Clyde F. Watford Sr. and Wanda Caples Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie P.; daughter Rebecca Pauline Watford; his parents, Stewart H. and Wanda Caples Smith; three brothers, Clyde F. (Penny) Watford Jr., Jason M. (Elizabeth) Smith, Sean (Michelle) Smith; nieces, Samantha Watford, Sheridan Estep, Kayla Watford and Deja Smith; nephews, Matthew Watford and Elijah Estep; and grandmother, Georgie Ann Caples.
HAZEL BESS
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Hazel Bobby Bess, 60, will be held at 3 p.m. today, April 28, 2004, in Lawson Grove Baptist Church with Dr. Ronald Carter, pastor, and the Rev. Alonza Bess, officiating. Burial will follow in Faith Memorial Gardens, directed by Mitchell Josey Funeral Home, Inc.
Mr. Bess died Thursday, April 22, at his residence after a long illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Susanna Reese Bess and the late Leroy Bess. He received his formal education in the Darlington County public schools. He was a member of Lawson Grove Baptist Church. Mr. Bess worked at DuPont of Florence and retired after 23 years of service.
Survivors include his mother of Darlington; his wife, Sarah Bess of the home; four sons, Artiss Bess, Alphonso Murphy, Chris (Lisa) Berry and Anthony (Pearley) Jones; three daughters, Hazelene Bess, Deborah Freeman and Michelle (Don) Adams; two brothers, McKenzie (Mary) Bess and Albert Bess; one sister, Alice Gee, all of Darlington; 18 grandchildren; a great grandson; a host of aunts, nieces, nephews; and a special son, friend and helper, Colie Dickie Wilks.
A brother preceded him in death, Alonzo Bess.
JEANNE POWERS
Graveside services for Jeanne Powers, 82, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 29, 2004, at Magnolia cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be tonight, Wednesday, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home.
Mrs. Powers died Friday, April 23. She was born in Minnesota, a daughter of the late Earl and Emma Fraser Herrick.
Surviving are two sons, Cameron and David Power of Hartsville; brother, Al Herrick of Midlothian, Ill.; eight grandchildren and six great–grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cameron Alfred Powers.
CHARLES W. WHEELER
Memorial services for Charles Wayne Charlie Wheeler, 71, will be held in Asheville, N.C. at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Charlie Wheeler Medical Fund.
Mr. Wheeler died Saturday, April 24, 2004. Born in Burnsville, N.C., he was a son of the late Floyd and Maude Buck Wheeler.
Surviving are his wife, Linda Stewart Wheeler of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Connie W. and Robert Edison of Asheville, N.C.; sister, Gladys Wheeler Silvers of Burnsville, N.C.; brother, James Wheeler of Arden, N.C.; step–sons, Robbie Galloway of Hartsville, Darby Howle of San Marcos, Texas, Brad Dixon of Hartsville; step–daughter, Lori Atkinson of Hartsville; granddaughter, Julia Edison of Asheville, N.C.
JESSE CAMPBELL
Funeral services for Jesse JC Campbell, 82, were held at noon Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at Second Baptist Church with burial in Florence National cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home. Mr. Campbell died Thursday, April 22. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Randolf and Katie Dowdy Campbell. He received his education in the public schools of Darlington County. Mr. Campbell was a member of Second Baptist Church and was an Army veteran. Surviving are his wife, Emma Mae Davis Campbell of Hartsville; two daughters, Marie (Brooks) Rogers of Hartsville and Christine Johnson of Columbia; a sister, Bert King of Hartsville; five grandchildren and four great–grandchildren.
CARRIE M. PEOPLES
LAMAR — Funeral services for Carrie Maxine Peoples were held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 22, 2004, at Sandy Grove United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc., of Lamar.
Carrie M. Peoples
Mrs. Peoples died Sunday, April 18, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. She was born Nov. 21, 1933, in Lee County, a daughter of the late Keith and Lucille Joe Benjamin. She was educated in the public schools of the county. She was a member of Sandy Grove United Methodist Church where she sang with the Independent Royal Lady Knights. She was employed for nearly twenty years at Kendall Corporation as a machine operator.
She is survived by her husband, Otis Lee Peoples of the home; eight daughters, Rose Mary (Reginald) Thomas of Bishopville, Margie (Sammie) Pearson, Dorothy Peoples, Carolyn Peoples, Bessie Anderson, Mary (James) Huggins and Lisa (Ned) Green, all of Lamar, and Ethel (Willie) Peterson of Florence; one son, Orlando Peoples of Lamar; one brother, Isaiah (Patsy) Benjamin of Patterson, N.J.; 26 grandchildren; 15 great–grandchildren and a host of other relatives.
