ARCHIE W. PRINCE

SUMTER — Funeral services for Archie Wingate Prince, formerly of Darlington, were held at 12 noon Thursday, April 15, 2004, at Alice Drive Baptist Church, Sumter, with Dr. Clay Smith officiating. Burial was in Florence National cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.

Mr. Prince died Friday, April 9, in a Columbia hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Dayton and Alice Wingate Prince. He grew up in both Darlington and Woodrow communities, and for a brief time he lived in Sumter and attended Lincoln High School. He served his country for 21 years in the U.S. Navy until his retirement from active duty as Chief Petty Officer in 1970. He furthered his education at the University College in College Park, Md. He retired from Civil Service with the V.A. in 1990. He was a member of Alice Drive Baptist Church and served as the lay ministry coordinator for volunteers.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Sallie Loretha Prince, of the home; two sons, Manuel Victor (Nadine) Prince of Cape Coral, Fla., and Anthony Reuben Prince of Fort Myers, Fla.; a brother, Dayton Prince Jr. of Lawnside, N.J.; a nephew Dayton Prince III; two nieces, Catherine and Tamar; two aunts, Pearl Brown and Lavicia McDowell; three goddaughters, Rahsaan Shears, Christina Bache and Germaine Lawrence and a host of other relatives and friends.

LILLIE MAE BACOTE

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Nurse Lillie Mae Bacote will be held at 1 p.m. today, April 21, 2004, in Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. D. L. Hughes, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Faith Memorial Gardens, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.

Nurse Bacote died Friday, April 16, at her residence after an extended illness. She was born in Society Hill, a daughter of the late Robert Coker and Della Brown Bacote. She received a degree in nursing from the Chicago School of Nursing in 1933 and attended S.C. State and Allen universities, Claflin and Morris colleges. She was the first black registered nurse on the Colored Ward at McLeod Infirmary (now known as McLeod Regional Medical Center) . She worked at the Darlington County Health Department as an inoculation and health education nurse and was instrumental in organizing the first blood bank in Darlington through her work with the American Red Cross and Darlington County Health Dept. She traveled in the Darlington County Health Department mobile unit to various locations in the county giving TB tests, distributing information and educating persons on the disease. She worked for Clemson University Extension Service as home economist/nutritionist. She was the recipient of numerous community service awards and served on many boards and committees. She was a daughter of Excelsior Temple No. 790 and daughter of IBPOE of Darlington.

Survivors include a daughter, Della Bacote of Avondale Estates, Ga.; a family friend, Annie Louise Pig Curry of the home; two sisters, Naomi Dargan of New York City and Onida Jackson of Darlington; special cousin, Moses Bo McKever; a nephew reared as a brother, Wilbur Pete (Vivian) Bacote; two nephews who served as her primary caretakers, Donald (Sharon) Jackson and Ronald (Cynthia) Jackson; a niece who served as caretaker, Martha (Clarence) Smalls; a sister–in–law, Sarah Fox Bacote of Hartsville; 15 nieces and nephews; a host of grandnieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Ruby Mae Sister Bacote, Ruth Bacote, Mary Nelson and a brother, Reuben Buddy Bacote.

The family is receiving friends at the residence at 144 Bacote St., Darlington.

ELDER N. BENJAMIN

Funeral services for Elder Nero Benjamin, 77, will be held at 1 p.m. today, April 16, 2004, at First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Elder Benjamin died Monday, April 12, after an illness. He was born in Lee County, a son of the late McQuilla and Annie Bell Bradley Benjamin. He was educated in the Lee County public school system. He was a member of Household of Faith Holiness Church of Hartsville and was an Army veteran. He was the pastor of Household of Faith Holiness Church in Cheraw for 35 years.

Surviving are his wife, Eula Mae Smith Benjamin of the home; two daughters, Vanessa (Donald) Jackson and Patricia (James) Clark, both of Hartsville; three sons, Ronald (Diane) Benjamin of Charlotte, N.C., and Leroy (Sheila) Benjamin and Richard (Nita) Benjamin, all of Hartsville; one aunt, Willie Mae Graham of Fayetteville, N.C., one uncle, James L. Bradley of Asbury, N.J.; 18 grandchildren; 12 great–grandchildren; three sisters–in–law, Doretha Peterson of Hartsville, Carrie Smith and Virginia Smith, both of Baltimore, Md.; and a host of other close relatives and friends.

ODELL KEITH

SOCIETY HILL — Funeral services for Otis Odell Keith, 64, will be held at 4 p.m. today, April 16, 2004, in Edwards Chapel Baptist Church, with interment following in the church cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Keith died Tuesday, April 13, in a Florence hospital. He was born in Chesterfield County, son of the late John and Sudie Waters Keith. He was a cashier at Johnnie's Truck Stop, worked for Klopman Manufacturing and drove tour group buses. He was a member of Edwards Chapel Baptist church where he was chairman of the Board of Deacons.

Surviving are his wife, Erleen S. Keith of the home; two sons and daughters–in–law, Lyndell and Donna Keith of Miami, Fla., and Ricky and Lizzie Keith of Hartsville; a daughter Kim Keith of Society Hill; seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Brad, Billy, Lindsay, Aaron, Julia and Hunter Keith; three great–grandchildren; three brothers, John D. Keith and Harvey Keith, both of Cheraw, and Howard Keith of Spartanburg; a sister Salley K. Baker of Society Hill.

Mr. Keith was preceded in death by a son Billy Keith.

HELEN RICHARDSON

Graveside services for Helen Copenhaver Richardson, widow of James McDowell Richardson, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 18, 2004, at Westview Memorial Park cemetery, followed by a reception at First Presbyterian Church. Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home in charge.

Mrs. Richardson was a longtime resident of Hartsville before moving 30 years ago to the Presbyterian Home of South Carolina in Summerville.

She is survived by her step–daughter, Hannah Richardson Kitchen of Scotland Neck, N.C.; sister, Mildred Copenhaver Patterson; Hannah's children and grandchildren; seven nieces.

EULA LEE

TIMMONSVILLE — Funeral services for Eula Stephens Lee, 91, were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 15, 2004, at Salem United Methodist Church, with interment following in the church cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Lee died Tuesday, April 13, in a Florence Hospital. She was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late Arthur and Modina Amerson Stephens. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, where she was one of the oldest members.

Surviving are a sister, Iretta Bell of Lamar, and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the home of Felton Stephens, 436 East Lynches River Rd., Lamar.

Memorials may be made to Salem United Methodist Church cemetery Fund, PO Box 126, Timmonsville, SC 29161.

BEN PARVIN

Benjamin R. Parvin, 50, died Thursday, April 15, 2004. Funeral plans will be announced later by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

FRANCES SHIRLEY

Funeral services for Frances Miriam Washington Shirley were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 8, 2004, at Jerusalem Baptist Church, with burial in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Hartsville. Wake services were held Wednesday, April 7 at 7 p.m. in the Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel.

Mrs. Shirley died Sunday, April 4, at her residence. She was born on July 18, 1915, a daughter of the late Lex and Minnie Williams Washington. She was educated in the public schools of Lee County. She was married to the late Edward Shirley and this union was blessed with seven children, five of whom preceded her in death. She was first a member of Sandy Bluff Methodist Church in Lee County and later was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher, a deaconess and was president of the Deaconess Board.

She is survived by one son, Larry (Josie) Shirley of Winston–Salem, N.C., and one daughter, Barbara (Robert) Shirley–Hibbert of Bronx, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren; seven great–grandchildren and many other relatives.

ELDER NERO BENJAMIN

Elder Nero Benjamin, 77, died Monday, April 12, 2004, at his residence after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 2213 Rock Crest Drive, Hartsville.

JOHN J. ADAIR

SMYRNA, Ga. — Graveside services for John J. Adair, 91, formerly of Hartsville, will be held at 11 a.m. today, April 14, 2004, at Arlington Memorial Park with the Rev. Clark Rolader officiating, directed by Castellaw Funeral Home, Smyrna, Ga.

Mr. Adair died Wednesday, April 7.

He is survived by daughters, Jody A. Usher of Decatur, Ga., and Jean Adair Stogner of Clearwater, Fla.; sons, John J. (Bud) Adair Jr. of Germany and Ben L. Adair of Hiram, Ga.; numerous grandchildren and great–grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

LEROY CEASER

Funeral services for Leroy June Ceaser Sr., 71, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Burial was in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Hartsville. The family is receiving friends at the residence.

Mr. Ceaser died Wednesday, April 7, at his residence. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Leroy Buster and Virginia Benjamin Ceaser. He was educated in the public schools of the county. He was a member Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Mr. Ceaser worked for more than 30 years with IMC Fertilizer Mill as a supervisor. He was married to the late Eva Dell McCaskill Ceaser.

Survivors are five daughters, Evette (Clarence) Jones, Jeanette Ceaser and Christy (Steven Bishop) Huggins, all of Hartsville, and Annette Ceaser and Patricia (Darnell) Ceaser, both of Richmond, Va.; three sons, Timothy (Geneva) Huggins of Philadelphia, Pa., Anthony Huggins of Roanoke, Va., and Charles Bruce of San Diego, Calif.; two sisters, Vertell Hayes of New Britain, Conn., and Willie Mae Bacote of Cleveland, Ohio; two brothers, Cornell (Betty) Ceaser of Hartsville and John Ceaser of Piscataway, N.J.; 26 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren.

MARGARET R. BROWN

Funeral services for Margaret Ruth Brown, 50, will be held at 4 p.m. today, April 14, 2004, at St. John United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Hartsville. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Ms. Brown died Friday, April 9, 2004. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of Teezee Wingate Brown and the late Willie Brown. She was educated in the public schools.

Survivors are two sons, William Brown of Hartsville and Justin Goodwin of Darlington; mother, Teezee Brown of Hartsville; three sisters, Mae Brown, Ernestine Wiggins and Bety Brown, all of Hartsville; three brothers, Henry (Cecilla) Ellis, Willie (Helena) Brown Jr. and James (Patricia) Brown, all of Hartsville; sisters–in–law, Olivia Hannibal, Ranie (James) Hannibal, Mary Brown, Carolyn (Ernest) Ratliff, all of Hartsville; brother–in–law, Benjamin Brown of Hartsville.

MERLE GUY

Funeral services for Merle Monteith Guy, 83, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 15, 2004, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Dr. Bob Cline will officiate with burial at 2 p.m. in Sunset Memory Gardens cemetery, Charlotte, N.C., directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Thursday, April 15, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 104 E. Home Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550, or the charity of one's choice.

Mrs. Guy, widow of Ralph Bernard Guy, died Tuesday, April 13. Born in Huntersville, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Joseph David and Ida Rogers Monteith. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving are her sons, Jerry Guy of Hartsville, Robert Guy of Belmont, N.C., Wayne Christenbury of Charlotte, N.C., Donnie Christenbury of North Myrtle Beach; sisters, Oma Lee Hart of Charlotte, N.C., Lois Elms of Charlotte, N.C.; brother, Horace Monteith of Charlotte, N.C.; seven grandchildren and three great–grandchildren.

MOODY WOODS

Funeral services for Grace Moody Woods, 98, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 10, 2004, at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeri Parris Perkins officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Music Fund or the Richard G. Wilson Scholarship Fund, 213 W. Home Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550, or to the charity of one's choice.

Mrs. Woods, widow of Auburn Woods Jr., died Wednesday, April 7, in Greenville where she had lived with her daughter since 1989. Born in Dillon County, she was a daughter of the late Fred Oscar and Mary Ann Tart Moody. She was a graduate of the Dillon County Schools and Flora Macdonald College at Red Springs, N.C. Before marrying, she taught 10 years at Bowman and Whitmire High Schools. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hartsville.

Surviving are her daughter, Mary Moody Woods of Greenville; son and daughter–in–law, Dr. Auburn and Jane Griswold Woods III of Spartanburg; sister, Freda Moody Bullard of Chadbourn, N.C.; granddaughters, Hollie Elizabeth Woods of Charleston and Mary Grace Woods of Clemson.

JOSEPH CARROLL

Mass of Christian burial for Joseph Francis Carroll Jr., 75, was held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 12, 2004, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Father Karl Roesch, Celebrant, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the St. Jude's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105.

Mr. Carroll, widower of Margaret Blackwell Carroll, died Friday, April 9. Born in Springfield, Mass., he was a son of the late Joseph Francis and Louise Reidler Carroll. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a Knight of Columbus. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was awarded the Korean Service Medal. He was a former alderman–at–large for Kingston, N.Y. and a former mayor of Apex, N.C. He retired from Metropolitan Life, opened Carroll's Office Supply, and retired to Hartsville to help his daughter start Tingen Insurance Agency.

Surviving are his sons and daughter–in–law, Joseph and Nancy Carroll of McKinney, Texas, John M. Carroll of Myrtle Beach; daughter and son–in–law, Margaret and Pete Tingen of Hartsville; sisters and brother–in–law, Marion Brown of Lake Katrine, N.Y., Louise and John Napoleon of Kingston, N.Y.; grandchildren, Michael Carroll, Joseph Tingen, Justin Carroll and Megan Tingen. He was preceded in death by his sister, Lorriane Lowe.
