Monroe Jones, 69, died Wednesday, April 7, 2004. Funeral plans will be announced later by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Jasper H. and Lucy Sweatt Jones. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was retired from Sonoco Products Company with 31 years of service.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara Braden Jones of Hartsville; sons, John M. Jones of Hartsville, Wesley H. Jones of Tacoma, Wash., William Billy Jones of Cary, N.C.; daughter, Susan M. McGahan of Hartsville; sister, Thelma L. McFarland of Patrick; brother, Melvin W. Jones of Pelzer; grandchildren, Kristen Jones, Sarah Hall, Amanda Jones, Brandy Jones, Angel Hall, Linda Hall, Trina Jones, J. P. Jones; great–grandchild, Brianna Hall.
RICHARD SULLIVAN
Funeral services for Richard Lee Sullivan, 80, will be held at 4 p.m. today, April 14, 2004, at Union United Methodist Church. The Revs. Roger Dodds and Charlie Short will officiate with burial in McBee cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Union United Methodist Church, 4379 Union Church Road, McBee, SC 29101, or the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.
Mr. Sullivan died Sunday, April 11, 2004. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Ira Hazel and Grace Blackwell Sullivan. He was a member of Union United Methodist Church where he was affectionately known as the Bubble Gum Man by the children. He served his country in the Army during World War II and received the Purple Heart. He was a member of the DAV, the Newman–Cassidy Chapter of the American Legion, McBee Masonic Lodge No. 313 and worked for Sonoco for 40 years.
Surviving are his wife, Dot Allred Sullivan of McBee; son and daughter–in–law, Ricky and Laura Sullivan of Hartsville; daughters and sons–in–law, Sandra and Bobby Hall of Columbia, Linda and Pete Stevens of Hartsville; grandchildren, Jeff Hall, April Icenhour, Johnny Stevens, Richie Stevens, Dawn Stevens, Ina Marie Sullivan; 12 great grandchildren.
WILLIAM WINBURN
Funeral services for William Raeford Winburn, 64, were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 9, 2004, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Winburn officiating. Burial followed in Florence National cemetery at 3 p.m. Memorials may be made to the VFW or the DAV.
Mr. Winburn died Tuesday, April 6, 2004. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late John Cord and Henrietta Roscoe Winburn. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force with 21 years of service, having served in Viet Nam, Korea and Iran. He was an active member of the DAV and VFW Post No. 9228.
Surviving are his wife, Jo Ann Wallace Winburn of Hartsville; sons and daughters–in–law, Chris and Ginger Winburn, Eric and Cindy Winburn, Travis and Dana Winburn, all of Hartsville; daughters and sons–in–law, Rachell and Bud Broom of Hartsville and Jean and Scott Hutson of Hartsville; sisters and brother–in–law, Allene Tyner of Hartsville, Irene Howle of Summerville, Rae and Lawrence Oliver of Summerton; brothers and sisters–in–law, Rochel and Doris Winburn of Hartsville, J. D. and Pat Winburn of Union, J. C. and Elly Winburn of Bethune; 15 grandchildren; one great–grandchild; mother–in–law, Mae Wallace of Hartsville. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mae King.
LILLIE RETHA HAM
Funeral services for Lillie Retha Ham will be held today, April 9, 2004, at 3 p.m. at New Hopewell Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with professional services directed by Hines Funeral Home.
Mrs. Ham died Sunday, April 4, at her residence. She was born Aug. 20, 1928, in Darlington County, a daughter of the late James Walter Mumford and Pearl Brown Mumford. She was educated in the public schools of the county. Mrs. Ham was a member of New Hopewell Baptist Church. She worked for a number of years as a cook at the Quality Inn and at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Doreatha Ham; three sisters, Laura Cranford, Janie Ruth McPhail and Margaret Sanders, and one brother, Kenneth Ham.
She is survived by four sons, Harvey Ham of Clinton, N.C., John (Janie) Ham and Wilbur (Maryetta) Ham, both of Winston-Salem, N.C., and James Ham of Roxboro, N.C.; five daughters, Ruby (Charles) Graham of Darlington, Shelia (Henry) Moses and Janice Toney, both of Hartsville, Priscilla (Leroy) Bush of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Patricia (Martinie Hunter) Ham of Society Hill; six sisters, Barbara (Eugene) Gregg of Columbia, Connie Mae (Jerome) Ham of Connecticut, Azalee Martin, Mary Burroughs, Minnie Jones and Gertrude Dunn, all of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five brothers, Joe Lewis Jackson, Melvin (Linda) Jackson, James (Connie) Mumford, Monroe Jackson and James Walter (Carolyn) Mumford, all of Brooklyn, N.Y., and many other relatives.
JIMMY H. GRIGGS
CHESTERFIELD — Funeral services for Jimmy Howard Griggs, 58, will be held at 3 p.m. today, April 9, 2004, at Piney Plains Freewill Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.
Mr. Griggs died Wednesday, April 7. He was born in Hartsville, a son of the late Sam and Molly Marie Winburn Griggs. He was a retired employee of Delta Mills and a member of Voice of Faith Independent Freewill Baptist Church. Mr. Griggs was preceded in death by two brothers, David Griggs and Sam Griggs Jr., and by a sister, Jewell Griggs.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Griggs of the home; two sons, Mitchell Griggs of the home and Mark (Frances) Griggs of Columbia; one brother, James Griggs of Hartsville; two grandchildren, Jack and Elie Griggs, and two special kids, Kelley and Tristan Butler.
JEROME BONAPARTE
DEER PARK, N.Y. — Funeral services for Jerome L. Bonaparte, 59, formerly of Darlington, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 10, 2004, in New Hopewell Baptist Church with the Rev. Calvin Daniels, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday, April 12, in Florence National cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. Bonaparte died Friday, April 1, in a Long Island, N.Y., hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Flora Bostic Bonaparte and the late Arthur L. Bonaparte. He was a graduate of Rosenwald High School class of 1962. He served his country in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged. At an early age, he was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church. He made his home in New York where he was a member of Faith House of Prayer Church of God in Christ and was gainfully employed.
Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Flora B. Bonaparte of Darlington; his wife, Sharon Knight-Bonaparte of Deer Park, N.Y.; three daughters, Destiny Monae Bonaparte of the home, Stephanie Bonaparte of Worcester, Mass., and Christel Bonaparte of Darlington; a brother, McArthur Bonaparte of Hartsville; two sisters, Constance “Vicki” Dixon of Florence and Helen Adams of New Haven, Conn.; father- and mother-in-law, Willie and Bessie Knight of Deer Park, N.Y.; four step-daughters, two step-sons; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
The family is receiving friends at the home of his mother of 517 Dovesville Highway, Darlington.
BOBBY CROWLEY
Memorial services for Bobby McReese Crowley, 71, will be held at 2 p.m. today, April 9, 2004, in the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home with the Rev. Grover Johnson and Dr. Wayne Williams officiating.
Mr. Crowley died Tuesday, April 6, after a long illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late William Edward and Lois Smith Crowley.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley Newsome Crowley of Hartsville; son, Steven B. (Denise) Crowley of McBee; two sisters, Kitty King of Hartsville and Sarah Mozingo of West Columbia; two grandchildren, Nicole and Alex Crowley of McBee.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Pam Crowley.
Memorials may be made to the Chapel Hill Baptist Church, 1569 Ruby Road, Hartsville, SC 29550.
JAMES M. BYRD JR.
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for James M. Byrd Jr., 65, will be held at 2 p.m. today, April 9, 2004, at Palmetto Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. E. B. Burroughs, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. Byrd died Monday, April 5, in a local hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington, a son of the late James M. Byrd Sr. and Christabel Edwards Byrd and was reared by his late grandmother, Janie Edwards.
He was a graduate of Mayo High School class of 1959. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged. He obtained his barbering diploma in 1961 at S.C. area trade school in Denmark, S.C., and received a certificate in business education at Florence-Darlington Technical College. He was operator of Johnson Barber Shop for a number of years. He was a member of Palmetto Baptist Church where he served on the Gospel Choir, Usher and Trustee Boards.
Mr. Byrd was an active member in the Darlington community. He was the voice of the Mayo High School Golden Bears and the Darlington High Falcons for over 25 years. He was treasurer and one of the founders of the Mayo Booster Club and continued after the merger of St. John and Mayo High School to form Darlington High School. He was a charter member of the Mayo High School Football Hall of Fame, Inc., a charter member and one of the organizers of the 3C’s (Community Concerned Citizens) Men’s Club. He was a member of Greater Progressive Elk Lodge No. 1607 where he served as secretary for 31 years.
Survivors include his devoted wife, Mrs. Ethella Mack Byrd of the home; his children, James Michael Byrd of Florence, Stacy A. Byrd of Goose Creek, Jon’Alma Byrd, Ethella Marie (Michael) Joseph, both of Darlington, and Kevin M. Byrd of Charlotte, N.C.; five grandchildren; three brothers, Oscar Byrd of Darlington, Charles Byrd and Aaron Byrd (five brothers preceded him in death) ; nieces and nephews; a special niece, TuMarre’ Wingate (Whitney) of Smyrna, Ga.; and a special nephew, Andre (Jasmin) Byrd of Salisbury, N.C.

GERTRUDE PARKER
BETHUNE — A celebration of life for Gertrude Plummer Parker, 99, will be held at 3 p.m. today, April 9, 2004, at Bethune United Methodist Church. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service. The Revs. Larry Brown and Ed Davidson will officiate with burial in Bethel cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Bethel United Methodist Church, Box 2, Bethune, SC 29009.
Mrs. Parker, widow of Manning E. Parker, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004. Born in Lynchburg, she was a daughter of the late John Payton and Love Boykin Plummer. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Bethune where she was active throughout her lifetime. She was also a member of the Bethune Woman’s Club.
Surviving are her daughter, Eugenia Parker Sowell of Bethune; sisters and brother-in-law, Minnie and John Cordray of Charleston, Cleta Scarborough of Lynchburg; grandchildren, Dianne Sowell McCaskill, Joseph P. Sowell Jr., Kim Parker Anderson, Mark E. Parker; six great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and daughter-in-law, Emily Parker. She was preceded in death by her son, Marion E. Parker.
The family wishes to thank the entire staff of McCoy Memorial Nursing Center for all of their loving care.

Leroy “June” Ceaser Sr. died Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at his residence. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. The Ceaser Family will receive visitations at the residence at 1421 Myrtle St., Hartsville. Professional services will be directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Hartsville.

Mrs. Frances Shirley died Sunday, April 4, 2004, at her residence. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Hartsville. The Shirley Family will receive friends at the residence at 711 E. Chapman Circle.
ODESSA ALEXANDER
DARLINGTON — Graveside services for Odessa Snowden Alexander, 94, were held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 2, 2004, in Grove Hill cemetery with the Revs. Jim Hardee and Dr. Olin Whitener officiating, directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home.
Mrs. Alexander died Thursday, April 1. She was born in Williamsburg County. She was a longtime resident of Darlington and moved to the Presbyterian Home of South Carolina about five years ago. Mrs. Alexander was a member of the Darlington Presbyterian Church and worked for the United Way of Darlington.
Survivors include one son, Allen (Cheri) Alexander of Hopkins; one brother, Earl Snowden of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two sisters, Ora Bartell of Hemingway and Elise (Alvin) Galloway of Darlington; and one grandson, David Alexander of Greenville.
Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Home of South Carolina, 2350 West Lucas Street, Florence, SC 29501.
PARLEE L. SMITH
Funeral services for Parlee Lindsey Smith, 91, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 4, 2004, at John Wesley Methodist Church with the Rev. John C. Smith officiating. Burial followed in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Smith died Friday, April 2. She was born in Benton, Tenn., a daughter of the late John and Nancy Millsap Lindsey. She was a member of John Wesley Methodist Church.
Surviving are five sons, Charles, Rex and Jerry Griffiths of Hartsville, John Griffiths of Bethune and Terry Griffiths of Chapel Hill, N.C.; a daughter, Betty March of Evans, Ga.; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Griffiths.
