HENRY SEEBY SR.

BATESBURG — Funeral services for Henry “Hank” Franklin Seeby Sr., 81, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at Still Waters Baptist Church with interment in Southland Memorial Garden with the Revs. Jackie Nix and Ray Ridgeway officiating, directed by Milton Shealey Funeral Home of Batesburg-Leesville.

Mr. Seeby died Sunday, April 4. He was born in Great Falls to the late John Roland and Cathern Louise Seeby. He was a member of Still Waters Baptist Church. Mr. Seeby was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Jeanette G. Seeby; son, Henry F. Seeby Jr. of Lexington; five daughters, Shirley Young, Donna Dowd, both of Columbia, C-Ann Able of Lexington, Catherin Jenkins of Ellijay, Ga. and Cora Lambert of Vero Beach, Fla.; a sister, Pearl Somerville of Apollo Beach, Fla.; 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by sisters, Doris S. Davilla and Nadine S. Gause.

Pallbearers were Don Davilla, Jerry Brock, Carroll “Butch” Durst, Todd Davis, Dan Grice and Jason Feaster.

Honorary pallbearers were the deacons of Still Waters Baptist Church.

ROXIE MATUSE

Funeral services for Roxie Catherine Matuse, 72, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Marvin Griggs officiating. Burial followed in Savannah Advent Christian Church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Matuse died Saturday, April 3. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Jack and Hallie Dixon Valentine. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving are her husband, Willie Matuse of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Debra and Harold Byrd of Society Hill, Mickie and Chuck Nymberg of Hartsville; brothers, Andrew Valentine of Darlington, Jerome Valentine of High Point, Johnny Valentine of Effingham, Ronnie Valentine of Hartsville; sisters, Juanita Brown, Jerdgie Mae Smothers, Pat Atkinson, Velma Sanders, Bonnie Byrd, all of Hartsville; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, James Keith Matuse.

TOM GOODSON

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Thomas “Tom” Wallace Goodson, 84, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 4, 2004, at First Baptist Church with the Revs. Ken Sandifer, Dr. Olin Whitener and Renny Johnson officiating. Burial followed in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Goodson died Friday, April 2, at McLeod Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Goodson was born in Darlington County, son of the late Thomas Pierce and Mamie Abbott Goodson. He was married for 66 years to the late Lillian Irene Blackmon. Mr. Goodson served his country with the United States Navy and had retired from Sonoco Paper Products. He was a member of the Darlington Kiwanis Club. Mr. Goodson enjoyed the outdoors and visiting shut-ins. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Hardin Sunday School Class and served as a deacon of his church.

Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Pollie and William H. Bristow Jr. of Darlington; three granddaughters, Susan (Damon) Flowers of Darlington, Elizabeth (Lee) Richards of Columbia and Katherine (Lofton) Fanning, also of Columbia;seven great-grandchildren, Damon Flowers Jr. Mary Palmer Richards, Susanna Stuart Flowers, Carolyn Gardiner Richards, William Bristow Richards, Charles Thomas Richards and Elizabeth Dryden Richards; two sisters, Margaret Greenwood of Virginia and Edith Miller of Hartsville, and his brother, Robert “Bob” Goodson of Darlington.

Mr. Goodson was preceded in death by brothers, Claud C. Goodson, James A. Goodson and Julius H. Goodson.

Memorials are suggested to the charity of one’s choice.

DUB WALTERS

Funeral services for Wade Hampton “Dub” Walters Jr., 80, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Bob Cline officiating. Burial followed in Westview Memorial Park cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 104 E. Home Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mr. Walters died Sunday, April 4. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Wade Hampton and Lula Hawkins Walters. He was a member of First Baptist Church and was owner and operator of Carolina Upholstery since 1948. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was involved in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Purple Heart twice. He was also a 50-year Mason.

Surviving are his wife, Sue Snipes Walters of Hartsville; sons and daughters-in-law, Wade and Jane Walters III of Florence, Bruce and Marissa Walters of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and David Tarlton of Darlington, Churé and Robby Galloway of Hartsville; sisters and brother-in-law, Ruby Gaskins of Chesterfield, Johnnie Bryant of Hartsville, Pat and Sammy Gibson of Hartsville; brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Ann Walters of Lugoff, Leon and Brenda Walters of Hartsville; sister-in-law, Betty Carol Walters of Hartsville; grandchildren, Wesley Walters, Whitney Walters, Matthew Tarlton, Porter Riley, Elliot Riley; great-grandchild, Esther Walters. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Henry Walters and Carol Walters.

JOHNNIE COWICK

Funeral services for Johnnie Rotan Cowick were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 4, 2004, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Bev Kennedy officiating. Burial followed in Westview Memorial Park cemetery. Memorials may be made to the West Hartsville Baptist Church, 1003 W. Carolina Ave., Hartsville SC 29550 or Hospice of Chesterfield County, Box 293, Chesterfield, SC 29709.

Mrs. Cowick, widow of Monroe H. “Curly” Cowick, died Thursday, April 1, 2004. Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late John Lawrence and Ozela Isgett Rotan. She was a member of West Hartsville Baptist Church.

Surviving are her sisters and brother-in-law, Isla Mae R. Cooke of Scranton, Carolyn R. and Larry Godfrey of Florence; brother, George M. and Inez Rotan of Florence. She was preceded in death by her sons, Herb Cowick and Kent Cowick, and her brother, Lawton Rotan.

GERTRUDE PARKER

BETHUNE — Gertrude Plummer Parker, 99, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004. Funeral plans will be announced later by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

ROBERT JAMES

Funeral services for Robert James, 66, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Home.

Mr. James died Sunday, March 28, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Swillie Fountain and Carrie Bell James Williamson. He was educated in the public schools of Darlington County and was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Brown James of Darlington; his children, Bobby Brown, Landin Brown, Dornel Brown, Dennis James, Marjorie James, Youlanda Williams, Gloria James, Deloris James, Rachael Cook, Doris Cook, Cheryl (James) Cook Hamlin, all of Brooklyn, N.Y.; six sisters, Mattie Mae Williams, Ella Mae Holly Dowdy and Helen McPhail, all of Darlington, Ruby Williams and Annie Bell Williams, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Johnnie Mae Williams of Norfolk, Va.; four brothers, Mannickrh Williams and George Williams of Darlington, Eugene Williams of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Lee Gary Williams of Rock Hill; 16 grandchildren; two great–grandchildren and a host of other close relatives and friends.

CHRIS BRUNSON

Funeral services for George Michael Christopher Chris Brunson, 19, will be held at noon Saturday, April 3, 2004, at the Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Alvin Rogers and Abraham Silva will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery. The family will receive friends this evening, April 2, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home.

Mr. Brunson died Wednesday, March 31. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of Denny Ray and Hazel Odom Brunson. He was a loving husband, father and son.

Surviving are his wife, Amy Johnston Brunson of Hartsville; son, Brian Joseph Brunson of Hartsville; father and mother of Hartsville; sister, Amanda Starr Brunson of Hartsville; brother, Sean Lee Odom of Hartsville; mother–in–law and spouse, Darlene and Douglas Melton of Richmond, Va.; father–in–law, Richard Johnston of Fresno, Calif.; grandmother and spouse, Patsy Odom and Jimmy Lloyd of Hartsville.

MARY K. HARRELL

Funeral services for Mary King Harrell, 94, widow of Bill Harrell, will be held at 2 p.m. today, April 2, 2004, at Gum Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Jeff Gardner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Harrell died Wednesday, March 31. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Paul Frank and Maggie King. She was a member of Gum Branch Baptist Church.

Surviving are Margaret Crisp, Ann Gilbert, Helen Bass and Fay King, all of Hartsville, Betty Oldfield of West Palm Beach, Fla., Carolyn Hampton of Melbourne, Fla., and Willie Tatum of Myrtle Beach; a sister, Sally K. Berry of Hartsville; 17 grandchildren; 19 great–granchildren; 10 great–great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by brothers, James, Hazel and Paul King.

BETTY JORDAN

Funeral services for Betty Carolyn Stokes Jordan, 72, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dave Worthington officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery.

Mrs. Jordan, widow of Joseph L. Jordan Sr., died Tuesday, March 30. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Leon Whitner and Hattie Lloyd Stokes. She was a member of Philadelphia Southern Methodist Church.

Surviving are her sons and daughter–in–law, Joseph L. and Kathy Jordan Jr. of Glen Burnie, Md., Charlie W. Jordan of Hartsville, J. Barry Jordan Sr. of Las Vegas, Nev.; sisters and brothers–in–law, Eva Mae S. Perkins of Roanoke, Va., Ruby S. and Tommy Adams of Lamar, Dot S. and Happy Malphus of Hartsville; grandchildren, Joseph L. Jordan III, Jessica Anne Jordan, Kira Pointer, John Barry Jordan II.

AL MARSHALL

Funeral services for George Alton Marshall III, 52, will be held at 2 p.m. today, April 2, 2004, at the Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. Tom Patterson will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery.

Mr. Marshall died Tuesday, March 30. Born in Florence County, he was a son of the late George Alton and Hattie McKay Marshall. He was employed at Wellman for 22 years. He was a loving husband, father and brother who enjoyed fishing, camping and traveling to the coast. He was an avid history buff and his hero was General Robert E. Lee.

Surviving are his wife, Janice Tinsley Marshall of Hartsville; son, George Alton Marshall IV of Greenwood; sisters and brothers–in–law, Kathy and James Davis of Colleyville, Texas, Debbie Morrell and Cindy and David Seagle all of Hartsville, Beth and Tommy Weir of Simpsonville; brothers, Dr. Chris and Jan Marshall of Columbia; brother–in–law, Mike Tinsley of Florence; mother–in–law, Estelle Tinsley of Rock Hill.

FRED WILTON AUMAN

DARLINGTON—Fred Wilton Auman, 70, died Thursday, June 17. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home tonight, June 18, from 5 to 7 p.m.

CHARLES E. KETTER

Funeral services for Charles Edward Ketter, 67, will be at 11 a.m. today, June 18, 2004, at Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Florence National cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Ketter died Saturday, June 12, in Bronx, N.Y., after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Para Lee Kelley. He was a graduate of Butler High School and was a U.S. Marine veteran.

Surviving are two daughters, Trozes Ketter and Sonya (Richard) Ketter–Huggins, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sons, Willie L. Ketter and Charles E. Ketter Jr., both of Worcester, Mass.; 10 grandchildren; six great–grandchildren and a host of other close relatives and friends.

C.L. OATES

Funeral services for C.L. Oates, age 85, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 19, 2004, at the Chapel Norton Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Philadelphia Southern Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends this evening, June 18, from 6 to 8 at the Funeral Home.

Mr. Oates died Thursday, June 17. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Clarence and Lillie Griggs Oates. He was retired from Lawson Farms and was a resident of the Bethea Baptist Home.

Surviving are his wife, Sarah Louise Oates of Darlington; daughter and son–in–law, Dorothy (Robert) May of Durham, N.C.; sons and daughters–in–law, Franklin (Barbara) Oates of Bishopville and Jeryl (Wendy) Oates of Florence; brothers, Howard Oates of Lamar and Heyward Oates of Camden; four grandchildren; seven great–grandchildren; two great–great grandchildren and two step–grandchildren.
