Funeral services for James Colin Rhodes, 86, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 19, 2004, at Prospect United Methodist Church. The Rev. Bud Boatwright will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends this evening, June 18, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home.
Mr. Rhodes, widower of Claudia Johnson Rhodes and Helen Tamburrino Rhodes, died Thursday, June 17. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Barney M. and Mary Johnson Rhodes. He was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church. He was a Veteran of World War II, was retired from Sonoco and was a member of the Sonoco Old Timers Club. He was a member of the Hartsville Masonic Lodge No. 173. Mr. Rhodes was a loving, giving and caring husband, father, brother, grandfather and great–grandfather.
Surviving are his daughters and sons–in–law, Becky and Heber Watson of Hartsville, Claudia and Dale Robertson of Salisbury, N.C.; step–son and step–daughter–in–law, Allen and Nora Tamburrino of Hartsville; brother and sister–in–law, Bryan JB and Eunice Rhodes of Hartsville; nine grandchildren; three step–grandchildren; four great–grandchildren and two step–great–grandchildren.
BARBARA LEWIS HAYNES
COLUMBIA — Service for Barbara Lewis Haynes, 65, were held Monday, June 7, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Kilbourne Park Baptist Church with burial in Swift Creek Baptist Church cemetery, Darlington, at 3 p.m. Memorials may be made to Kilbourne Park Baptist Church, the American Cancer Society or to a charity of one's choice.
Mrs. Haynes died Saturday, June 5. Born in Florence, she was the daughter of the late Chief Justice James Woodrow Lewis and Alice Lee Lewis. She attended the University of South Carolina and graduated from Coker College and was a member of Phi Beta Phi. She retired from the S.C. Legislative Council as office manager. She was a member of Kilbourne Park Baptist Church and the church choir.
Surviving are son and daughter–in–law, Bradley L. and Martha Haynes of Columbia; daughter and son–in–law, Susan H. and Jerry Brown of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and grandchildren, Jackson, Jenna and Abigail.
LEROY JACKSON
Funeral services for Leroy Jackson, 52, were held at 3 p.m. Monday, June 7, 2004, at New Hopewell Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Young and Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Jackson died Thursday, June 3, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Mack and Minnie Graham Jackson. He received his education in the Darlington County public school system, attended Hartsville Bible Baptist Church and was employed with Griggs Logging.
Surviving are six sisters, Betty A. Jackson, Margaret Jackson, Ruby D. Jackson, Joyce Jackson, Maxie L. Jackson, all of Hartsville, and Hattie Jackson of Arcadia, Fla.; five brothers, Jerome Jackson, Charles R. Jackson, Levern Jackson and Timothy Jackson, all of Hartsville.
DONALD E. MARCHETTE
A graveside service for Donald Eugene Don Marchette, 76, was held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at the Boxwood Plantation cemetery with full military honors. The service was conducted by the Rev. Jim Hardee, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.
Mr. Marchette, a retired lieutenant colonel with the U.S. Marine Corps, died Sunday, June 6. He was born in Charleston and was the son of the late Louis D. and Mabel Vinson Marchette. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina, was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Florence and was also retired from the South Carolina Employment Security Commission.
Lt. Col. Marchette retired from the USMC after 21 years of service. He served his country in Korea and Vietnam. While on active duty, he received The Bronze Star with Valor and the Purple Heart. After retirement, he spent his time between homes in Florence and Ocean Isle Beach, N.C. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an avid reader of historical literature.
Survivors include his wife, Verida B. Marchette of the home; three sons, Donald E. (Cathy) Marchette of Stephens, Ga., Louis V. (Fran) Marchette of Gulfport, Miss., and Jackson A. (Beth) Marchette of Florence; three nephews, Rick (Debra) Beasley, Wes (Julie) Beasley, both of Florence and David (Mary Wood) Beasley of Society Hill; two nieces, Dale (Jimmy) Timmons of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., and Marie (Johnny) Dawkins of Palm Harbour, Fla.; one aunt, Kate Harbour of Marietta, Ga.; six grandchildren, Reade, Teale, Rushing, Rose, Rebecca and Rachael, and two great–grandchildren Jackson and Leah.
Memorials may be made to the Billie Hardee Home for Boys, PO Box 617, Darlington, SC, 29540.
MICHAEL COLEMAN
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Michael Davis Coleman, 52, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 5, 2004, at Coward Baptist Church. Interment followed in Florence Memorial Gardens, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Coleman died Wednesday night, June 2, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Newbern, N.C., son of Mrs. Margaret Andrade Coleman and the late C.A. Coleman. Mr. Coleman was employed by Cayce Heating and Air. He was a member of Coward Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Joyce W. Coleman of the home; a son Christopher Coleman of Conway; a daughter Carissa Hooks of Kannapolis, N.C.; a step–son, Jeremy Amburn of Darlington; a step–daughter, Janet Cox of Darlington; seven grandchildren; three sisters, Paulette Fix of Effingham, Annette Poston of Florence, Susan Wiseman of Timmonsville; and a brother Danny Coleman of Florence.

ANNIE M. THOMPSON
LAMAR — A graveside service for Annie Mae Bell Thompson, 71, was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 5, 2004, in Mt. Pleasant cemetery in Lamar, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Thompson died Wednesday night, June 2, at her residence. She was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late Johnny Spencer and Sizzie Amerson Bell. She lived in Sumter for most of her life and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are a husband Charles F. Thompson III and two brothers, Robert W. Bell of Hartsville, and Pete Bell of Lamar, also a number of nieces and nephews.

FRANCES TIDWELL
Funeral services for Frances Marie Tidwell, 74, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 10, 2004, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. John Smith will officiate with burial in Cedar Creek Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends today, June 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Tidwell, widow of Henry Tidwell Jr., died Tuesday, June 8. She was a daughter of the late John Henry and Frances O'Neal Tyner.
Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, John Henry and Debbie Tidwell of Hartsville; daughter, Darlene T. Dixon of Florida; two step–grandchildren, John David Phillips and Nathan Phillips.
JUDY KING
FLORENCE — Memorial services for Judy Polson King, 63, will be held at 4 p.m. today, June 9, 2004, at the Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel, Hartsville. The Rev. Dr. Richard Bailey will officiate with private burial in Magnolia cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
Mrs. King died Thursday, June 3. Born in Hartsville, she was a daughter of the late John E. and Bonnie Tedder Polson Jr. She graduated from Hartsville High School and attended Coker College.
Surviving are her sons and daughter–in–law, Todd and Jerri King of Surfside Beach, Michael King of California; brother, John E. Polson III of Hartsville; grandchildren, Brandi Nicole King, Jordan Alyse King, Haley Riane King, all of Surfside Beach, and Lilly Ann King of Oregon.
She was predeceased by a brother, Joel E. Polson.
L.D. CAMPBELL
Funeral services for Lenard Devon Campbell, 62, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 6, 2004, at the Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. DeVere Williams officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery Memorials may be made to the Twitty United Methodist Church, 408 Coker Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mr. Campbell died Friday, June 4. Born in Fayetteville, N.C., he was a son of Maggie Naylor Campbell and the late Lenard Lacost Campbell. He was retired from the U. S. Navy, serving several times in Vietnam. He was also retired from A. O. Smith. He was a member of the Hartsville Masonic Lodge No. 173, Omar Shrine, Provost Guard, Moose, Pee Dee Singles Club, and the Dixie Kicks Dance Club.
Surviving are his mother of Hartsville; son and daughter–in–law, Johnny and Leesa Campbell of Hartsville; aunt, Elma Sessoms of Roseboro, N.C.; grandchildren, Hayley Campbell, Melissa Campbell and Dillon Campbell.
JANIE LIGHTY
Janie Lighty died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at Palmetto Richland Hospital after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Hartsville. The family will receive friends at the residence at 640 Dovesville Highway.
LeGRAND FLOYD
Funeral services for LeGrand Floyd, 88, will be held at 4 p.m. today, June 16, 2004, at Mt. Tema Baptist Church. The Rev. Jerome Douglas is pastor, and the Rev. LeRoy Dubose will deliver the eulogy. Burial will be in the St. John United Methodist Church cemetery in the Oates Community, directed by Hines Funeral Home.
Mr. Floyd died Saturday, June 12, at Providence Hospital in Columbia. He was born Aug. 11, 1915, one of 12 children born to William and Lelia Floyd of the Darlington County farming community. He was married
to Mary Prince in 1953 until her death in 2003. He was raised in a Christian home and was converted in 1950 as he joined the Mt. Tema Baptist Church in which he was a hard worker in maintaining the sanitation and comfort of the church. A hard worker, he performed duties as a machine operator on the Harry Lee Bass farms for more than 30 years before his retirement. During his tenure as a farmer, he was the chief mechanic of maintenance for all types of farm equipment as well as carpenter in constructing new facilities.
He always made himself available to help others at their convenience, day or night.
Ten siblings predeceased him.
He is survived by two daughters, Rosa (Henry) Roberts of Hartsville, Sarah (Elijah) McPhail of New York, N.Y.; two sons, Stephen Peterson and Harry Colclough, both of Hartsville; one sister, Ella Mae of Saganaw, Mich.; seven grandchildren and seven great–grandchildren.
JAMES PERKINSON
Funeral services for James Leslie Perkinson, 73, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at South Hartsville Baptist Church with the Revs. David Worthington and Mark Daniel officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mr. Perkinson died Sunday, June 13. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Lee and Ruth Seymour Perkinson. He was a member of South Hartsville Baptist Church and a lifetime resident of Hartsville. He was retired from Dupont with 35 years of service, and he also retired as a sergeant major in the S.C. Army National Guard with 42 years of service. He served 40 years with the Hartsville Rescue Squad, 12 of those years as the chief.
Memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Pee Dee, Hartsville Rescue Squad, South Hartsville Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society.
Surviving are his wife, Louise Lee Perkinson of Hartsville; sons and daughter–in–law, David and Diane Perkinson, Jim Perkinson, all of Hartsville; daughters and sons–in–law, Linda and Von Johnson of Hartsville, Debbie and Carl Moore of Hartsville, Becky and Mark Daniel of Orlando, Fla., Lisa and Chris Sims of Hartsville; sisters, Doris Melton of Rock Hill, Rosa Lee Winburn of Florence; brother, Herbert Perkinson of Hartsville; 11 grandchildren and one great–grandchild.
CHARLES L. HOWLE
Funeral services for Charles Laverne Howle, 54, will be held at 4 p.m. at Cedar Creek Baptist Church on Thursday, June 17, 2004, with the Revs. Homer Hinson and George Howle officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Creek cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home. The family will receive visitors this evening, June 16, from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.
Mr. Howle died Monday, June 14. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Harold and Lizzie Teal Howle. He was retired from Galey & Lord and was a member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Judy Powell Howle of Hartsville; son, Michael (Bucky) Howle of Hartsville; brothers, Thomas Howle of Myrtle Beach, Willie Howle, Greensboro, N.C., Jimmy and Eli Howle, both of Hartsville; sisters, Sarah Howle, Gail Boyd and Hattie Atkinson, all of Hartsville.
He was preceded in death by a son, Chris Howle.

EVELYN HALL SIMMONS
Funeral services for Evelyn Hall Simmons, 62, were held Monday, June 14, 2004, in the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home with the Rev. Marvin Griggs officiating. Burial followed in Gainey cemetery.
Mrs. Simmons died Saturday, June 12. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Otis Hall Sr. and Margaret Gainey Hall.
Surviving are her sons, Rickey Simmons of Kingsport, Tenn., Nickey Simmons of Lamar, Ralph E. Simmons Jr. and Terry R. Simmons Sr., both of Hartsville, David R. Simmons of Camden, Jason Simmons of Kankakee, Ill.; daughter, Delene Ray of Irmo; brothers, Jimmie Hall of Tyty, Ga.; Randy C. Hall of Hartsville, Clyde Hall, of Pendleton; sister, Delores Hill of Pendleton; 19 grandchildren and eight great–grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph E. Simmons Sr.
