Funeral services for James Colin Rhodes, 86, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 19, 2004, at Prospect United Methodist Church. The Rev. Bud Boatwright will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends this evening, June 18, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home.
Mr. Rhodes, widower of Claudia Johnson Rhodes and Helen Tamburrino Rhodes, died Thursday, June 17. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Barney M. and Mary Johnson Rhodes. He was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church. He was a Veteran of World War II, was retired from Sonoco and was a member of the Sonoco Old Timers Club. He was a member of the Hartsville Masonic Lodge No. 173. Mr. Rhodes was a loving, giving and caring husband, father, brother, grandfather and great–grandfather.
Surviving are his daughters and sons–in–law, Becky and Heber Watson of Hartsville, Claudia and Dale Robertson of Salisbury, N.C.; step–son and step–daughter–in–law, Allen and Nora Tamburrino of Hartsville; brother and sister–in–law, Bryan JB and Eunice Rhodes of Hartsville; nine grandchildren; three step–grandchildren; four great–grandchildren and two step–great–grandchildren.
MAE FRANCES JOHNSON
Funeral services for Mae Frances Johnson were held Thursday, July 1, 2004, at 4 p.m. at the Church of Christ in the Cypress community with Brother Silas Prescott officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Lamar.
Mrs. Johnson died on Sunday, June 27, in a Florence hospital after an illness.
She was born June 1, 1944, in Florence County, a daughter of Joseph McDowell and the late Gertie Solomon McDowell. She was educated in the public schools of the county. She was a teacher for the Darlington County Head Start program for many years. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Cypress where she sang in the Senior Choir and worked on the pledge committee.
Survivors include her father Joseph McDowell; her husband, James Johnson of Hartsville; four daughters, Modestine (Larry) Robinson, Annette Johnson and Cheryl Johnson, all of Hartsville, and Joyce Jackson of Darlington; an adopted daughter, Joyce Jackson of Hartsville; three sons, James (Diane) Johnson, Gerald (Teresa) Johnson and Jimmy (Karhan) McDowell, all of Hartsville; a sister, Mary McDowell; a special friend, Michael Johnson; 13 grandchildren; one great–grandchild and many other relatives and very dear friends.
JUDITH BOATWRIGHT
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Judith Boatwright, 65, were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 1, 2004, at Free Will Baptist Bible Church, conducted by the Rev. Jody Wynn. Interment followed at Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.
Mrs. Boatwright died Tuesday, June 29. She was born in Darlington County, the daughter of Willie Lee and Ella Mae Oliver Suggs. She was a member of the Free Will Baptist Bible Church.
Survivors include one son, Timothy W. (Jan) O'Neal; two daughters, Paula (Ricky) O'Neal Chaplin and Gloria (Johnny) Howle, all of Darlington; two brothers, Randall (Linda) Suggs and Johnny Suggs, also of Darlington; four sisters, Margie (Francis) Duvall, Janice Miller, Helen Clark, all of Darlington, and Martha McLaughlin of Hartsville; six grandchildren, Shelley, Nicole, Erin, Brittany, Amber and Amy.

INKY INGRAM
BETHUNE — Funeral services for Donald Wilson Inky Ingram Jr., 31, will be held at 11 a.m. today, July 2, 2004, at the Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Ed Griggs will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery.
Mr. Ingram died Wednesday, June 30. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of Donald Wilson Ingram and Joyce Barefoot Plattner.
Surviving are his spouse, Mary Battista of Memphis, Tenn.; father and stepmother, Donald and Beverly Ingram of Bethune; mother and step–father, Joyce and Donald Plattner of Memphis, Tenn.; two brothers, Thomas Wayne Williams of Memphis, Tenn., and Justin Mathis Ingram of Bethune; and grandparents, Ora Dell Ingram of Bethune, Gladys Lenora Morris of Hartsville and James Howard Barefoot of Ruby.

FLORENCE — Funeral services for Darryl Lane Cox Sr., 64, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 3, 2004, at Pisgah United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Terry Martin. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.
Mr. Cox died Thursday, July 1, in a local hospital after an illness. He was born in Richlands, N.C., to the late Owen Bryant and Louise Humphries Cox. He served his country in the U.S. Navy and was retired as a service manager for W. L. Flowers & Company. Mr. Cox was a member of Pisgah United Methodist Church. He umpired for high school and was an ASA official. He coached Mite football for more than 25 years and was a volunteer for the Darlington High School Lady Falcons softball team. He also enjoyed dirt track racing and golf.
Survivors include his wife, Nell Cox of the home; a son, Lane Cox of the home; a daughter, Tina (Dean) Teal of Summerville; a goddaughter, Kimberly McClean, of the home; a brother, Heyward B. (Annette) Cox of Burgaw, N.C., and a granddaughter, Nora Teal.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home tonight, Friday, from 6 to 8.
Memorials may be made to the Darlington High School Lady Falcons softball team, 525 Spring St., Darlington, SC 29532.
BESSIE PEOPLES
LAMAR — Funeral services for Bessie Peoples, 97, of Bishopville were held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at Sandy Grove United Methodist Church of Lamar, the Rev. Charles K. Wilson, pastor. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc., of Lamar.
Mrs. Peoples died on Saturday, June 26, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born to the late Walker and Fannie (Lee) Gordon. She was married
to the late Isaac Peoples, and to this union three children were born, two of whom survive her. She also raised Mary Barber as her own daughter. She was first a member of the Baptist Community Church in Olanta and after moving to Florence joined the House of God where she continued her membership.
Survivors are a son, Otis Peoples of Lamar; a daughter, Frances Peoples of Bishopville; two sisters, Jessie Lee McFadden and Chessie Vivian of Florence; daughter–in–law, Dorothy Peoples of Fayetteville, N.C.; 19 grandchildren; 38 great–grandchildren and 18 great–great–grandchildren.
DEBORAH ANN GRANT
LAMAR — Deborah Ann Grant died Tuesday, June 30, 2004, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Hartsville. The family will receive friends at the home of her mother, Ella Joyner of 205 E. Depot St., Society Hill.
ELIZABETH MELTON
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Elizabeth Hill Enzor Melton, 83, will be held at 11 a.m. today, July 2, 2004, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with the Rev. Timothy Coker officiating. Burial will follow in Darlington Memory Gardens.
Mrs. Melton died Tuesday, June 29, in a local hospital. She was born in Florence county, daughter of the late Thomas Eron and Carrie Langston Hill. Mrs. Melton was employed by Dixie Cup for more than 34 years. She was a member of Central Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Alberta (Wade) O'Neal of Darlington; two sons, Daniel (Phyllis) Enzor of Memphis, Tenn., and Earl (Anita) Enzor of Raleigh, N.C.; a step–daughter, Joanne Melton Graves of Darlington; 11 grandchildren; 21 great–grandchildren; four brothers, T.D. (Virginia ) Hill of Florence, Jack G. (Chelley) Hill of Florence, Ray (Francis) Bird Hill of Arlington, Texas, and Richard (Linda) Hill of Asheville, N.C.
Mrs. Melton was preceded in death by a husband, Walter Ralph Melton; two step–sons, Sidney and Ted Melton, and a brother, Talmadge Hill.
MAE P. ROBERTSON
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Mae Parker Robertson, 67, were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 1, 2004, in the Kistler Chapel conducted by the Rev. Gerald Truluck. Burial followed in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.
Mrs. Robertson died Monday, June 28, at her residence after a long illness. She was born in Jefferson County, Fla., to Jeff and Bertha Lee Braswell. Born on Jan. 13, 1937, she was the fifth of 10 children. She moved to Beaufort and attended business school in Savannah, Ga.
Mrs. Robertson and her husband moved to the Florence–Darlington area in 1961 and helped start several local golf courses. In 1968 they built Tifton Golf Club, later renamed Beavercreek Golf Course, and ran this for 27 years.
Mrs. Robertson was predeceased by her parents and sisters, Virginia Goodreau and Daisy Givens.
She is survived by her husband of 44 years, James Jim Robertson; two sons, Billy (Robin) Parker of Florence and Anthony (Judy) Parker of Myrtle Beach; a grandson, whom she loved as a son, Bryan Anthony Roland Parker of the home; three brothers, David (Gay) Braswell, James (Shirley) Braswell, both of Florida, and Russell (Joyce) Braswell of Alabama; three sisters, Mary (Harold) Powers of Virginia, Irene (Bob) Waldow and Betty (John) Hudson, both of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

ANNETTE M. SMOTHERS
Funeral services for Annette Melton Smothers, 70, were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 1, 2004, in the chapel of Norton Funeral Home. Burial was in New Providence Baptist Church cemetery.
Mrs. Smothers died Monday, June 28. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Sam and Julia Truett Melton.
Surviving are two sons, Glenn Malphus of Darlington and Charles Malphus of Hartsville; step–children, William (Pee Wee) Smothers and Lorette Gray of Hartsville, Gerald Smothers of Columbia and Carolyn Kania of Suffolk, Va.; five sisters, Frances Cox of Darlington, Mary Hodges of Summerton, Thelma McLaurin of Wade, N.C., Carol Melton and Marguerite Jones of Hartsville; a brother, James H. Melton Sr. of Hartsville; six grandchildren; eight great–grandchildren and eight step–grandchildren.
MARY A. SUGGS
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Mary Agnes Suggs, 85, will be held at 1 p.m. today, June 30, 2004, in the Darlington Church of God conducted by the Rev. Jerry Miller. Burial will follow in Odom cemetery, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.
Mrs. Suggs died Sunday, June 27, in a local hospital after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, the daughter of the late Peter Thomas and Mattie Viola Severance Cassidy. She attended the Darlington Church of God and was the oldest member of the church. Mrs. Suggs was a housewife and was married
to the late Boyd Suggs, who passed away in 1980. She was also predeceased by a son, Jackie T. Suggs, who died in 1997.
Survivors include a sister, Charlotte Oxendine of Darlington, three grandchildren and four great–grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
THELMA McCASKILL
Graveside services for Thelma McCaskill, 86, were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 26, 2004, at Magnolia cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mrs. McCaskill died June 24. She was born in Kershaw County, a daughter of the late Walter and Lola Mobley. She was retired from Sonoco Products Co. and was a member of the Old Timers Club.
Survivors include her daughter and son–in–law, Polly and Cecil Boan of Hartsville; step–sons, Earl and Ronnie Glenn of Florence; sisters, Neil Robertson of Lancaster, Annie Grace Knight of Heath Springs, Ruby Bowers of Kershaw; eight grandchildren and several great–grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Robertson.
MARVIN L. BRADSHAW
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Marvin L. Bradshaw, 85, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 26, 2004, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery.
Mr. Bradshaw died Wednesday night, June 23, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, the son of the late Charles and Lydia Williamson Bradshaw. He served his country in the U.S. Army for 27 years. Mr. Bradshaw was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the First Church of God. Mr. Bradshaw enjoyed fellowshipping with his friends.
Surviving are his wife, Mildred C. Bradshaw; a son, Marvin Dwayne Bradshaw of Darlington; two daughters, Laura Kay Wills of Darlington, Allison W. Parker of Florence; one brother, Charles E. Bradshaw of Franklin Springs, Ga.; three grandchildren and two great–grandchildren. Mr. Bradshaw was predeceased by two brothers, Samuel C. and Odell Bradshaw.
VERNON ELI DUDLEY
FLORENCE — Funeral services for Vernon Eli Dudley, 63, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 28, 2004, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home in Darlington with interment following in Mt. Hope cemetery.
Mr Dudley died Saturday morning, June 26, at his home. He was born in Johnston County, N.C., a son of the late Willie and Lucy Stanley Dudley. He was employed by Fiber Industries and was a member of Cash Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia Langston McLaughlin Dudley of Florence; three daughters, Debbie (Eddie) Douglas of Darlington, Nicole Dudley (Andy) Bethea and Flora (Richard) Hill, both of Florence; three sons, Stephen (Cindy) Dudley of Scranton, Frank Sonny (Ada) McLaughlin and George (Carol) McLaughlin, both of Florence; two brothers, Frank (Anne) Dudley of Bunnell, Fla., and Woodrow (Brenda) Dudley of Deltona, Fla.; four sisters, Merle McFatter of Goldsboro, N.C., Pearlie (Bill) Daniels of Cincinnati, Ohio, Bessie (Rex) Pittman of Wilson, N.C., and Betty Lou (Linwood) Cherry of Dudley, N.C.; also 10 grandchildren and 12 great–grandchildren.
