AUSTIN W. DICKSON

SOCIETY HILL — Funeral services for Austin Wayne Bo Dickson, 55, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 28, 2004, in the Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home Chapel in Darlington, conducted by the Rev. Jody Wynn. Burial followed in the Society Hill Church of God cemetery, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.

Mr. Dickson died Friday afternoon, June 25, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, son of Mac Dickson and the late Olis Atkinson Dickson. He was in the logging business and was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He enjoyed fishing.

Surviving in addition to his father of Society Hill are two daughters, Janet Stewart of Florence and Anna Elizabeth (Steven) Welch of Hartsville; one son, Austin W. (Keri) Dickson Jr. of Fayetteville, N.C.; two sisters, Mary (Leverne) Moody of Darlington and Faith Lampley of Society Hill; and four grandchildren.

NORMAN LANE

Norman Lane, 67, died Sunday, June 27, 2004. Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Marlboro County, he was a son of the late Mack and Phammie Love Lane.

Surviving are his wife, Brenda Holland Lane of Latta; sons and daughters–in–law, Norman Joseph and Lori Lane of Latta, Robert Alan and Audrey Lane of Hartsville; brothers, Ronald Lane of Latta, John Lane of Raleigh, N.C.; sisters, Betty Jean Tyndall of Darlington, Elsie Jackson of Dillon; five grandchildren.

BESSIE PEOPLES

LAMAR — Bessie Peoples died on Saturday, June 26, 2004, in a Florence hospital after an illness. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Hines Funeral Home of Hartsville and Lamar. The family will be receiving friends at the home of her son, Otis Peoples, at 50 Honeysuckle Lane in the Cypress community.

JOHN SUGGS

LAMAR — Funeral services for John Thomas Suggs, 89, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 28, 2004, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Lydia with the Revs. Dr. Tim McClendon, Richard Hopper and Chaplain Ann Ayers officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the church.

Mr. Suggs died Saturday, June 26, 2004. He was the son of the late William Asberry and Elizabeth Rogers Suggs and Cleora Lindler Suggs. He graduated from Lydia High School and Presbyterian College in 1937 where he was a star pitcher on the baseball team. He was a very active member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday school superintendent for many years, was on the Administration Board and served on other church committees. He retired from Sonoco after 34 years and was a member of the Old Timers Club. He was a member of the Lamar Prayer Breakfast Club, Civitan Club and served in the army during World War II in the Pacific Theater.

Surviving are his wife, Mary E. Suggs of Lamar; sons and daughters–in–law, John and Angela Suggs of Huntersville, N.C., Tommy and Jane Suggs of Columbia; sister, Delle Smith of Marion; grandchildren, Jason Suggs, Joel Suggs, Brandon Suggs, Dan Blackmon and Betsy Blackmon. He was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Smith.

LUCILE I. RICHARDSON

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Lucile I. Richardson, 92, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 28, 2004, at First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Renny Johnson. Interment followed at Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.

Mrs. Richardson died Saturday, June 26. Born in Sumter County, she was the daughter of the late John Frank and Janie Wilder Ingram. She grew up in Sumter and graduated from Sumter Girls High School in 1928. She later married Mr. Norman S. Richardson and moved to Darlington. She was a faithful and devoted member of First Baptist Church for more than 60 years, where she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, worked on the kitchen committee and served as a member of the Women's Auxiliary Circle. Mrs. Richardson was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 163 for more than 50 years.

Mrs. Richardson is survived by two sons, Dr. Norman S. Richardson of Hilton Head Island and Malcolm E. Mac (Dawn) Richardson of Darlington; one sister, Myrtice I. Knight of Orangeburg; sister–in–law, Betty Ingram of Darlington; seven grandchildren, Mike Richardson, King (Kelli) Richardson, John (Marcy) Richardson, Selby (Jenny) Richardson, Hugh (Kathy) Richardson, Robin Richardson Pietarinen and Brenda Richardson (Ricky) Barron and eight great–grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be made to the First Baptist Church, PO Box 297, Darlington, SC 29540 or to the Barnabas Ministries, PO Box 214, Darlington, SC 29540.

LEROY WALTERS

Graveside services for Leroy Walters, 87, were held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 25, 2004, at Bethel cemetery in Bethune with the Rev. Ed Griggs officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Walters, widower of Emmie Stevens Walters, died Thursday, June 24. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Buck and Ada Gainey Walters.

Surviving are his sons, Fred Walters of Kershaw, Glenn Walters of McBee; daughters, Helen Kirkley of Jefferson, Margie McLean of Pageland, Carolyn Johnson of Pageland, Judy Eason of Lancaster, Ky.; Kathy Robertson of Jefferson; 50 grandchildren; 45 great–grandchildren.

DONTEZ B. WILLIAMS

Funeral services for Mr. Dontez B. Williams will be held at 3 p.m. today, June 25, 2004, at Mt. Calvary A.M.E. Church. Burial will follow in the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc., of Hartsville. The family will receive friends at the residence of his mother, Penelope Brown–Samuel, 232 Promise Lane, Hartsville.

Mr. Williams died Monday, June 21. He was born on July 1, 1977, a son of Michael Allen and Penelope (Brown) Samuel. He was educated in the public schools of Darlington County, graduating from Hartsville High School with the class of 1995. He was a member of the Red Fox football team during high school and went on to play college football for South Carolina State University for two years.

He is survived by his mother, Penelope Samuel of Hartsville; his father, Michael Allen of Florence; one son, Donquez Williams of Darlington; three sisters, Anita Samuel, Valencia Allen and Lakia Windom; five brothers, Michael Allen Jr., Mario Allen, Timothy Scipio, Michael David and Ryan Tremble.

PATRICIA GALLOWAY

MARIETTA, Ga.—Funeral services for Patricia Galloway, 72, will be held at 11 a.m. today, June 25, 2004, with Dr. Don Mason officiating. Burial will follow in Sandy Plains Baptist Churchyard cemetery, directed by H. M. Patterson & Son, Canton Hill Chapel Funeral Directors of Marietta, Ga.

Mrs. Galloway died Tuesday, June 22. She was a caring nurse for over 40 years and served as a nurse in the U.S. Army and worked 11 years at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, Ga.

She is survived by her husband, W. L. (Bud) Galloway; son, Dell Galloway; daughters, Diane Jones and Ruth Galloway; seven grandchildren; and one sister, Wanda Carnifax of Doylestown, Ohio.

GEORGE W. GARDNER JR.

Funeral services for George Wilson Gardner Jr., 62, were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 19, 2004, at Gonzalez Funeral Home with a private burial held at Florida National cemetery, directed by Gonzalez Funeral Home.

Mr. Gardner died Wednesday, June 16. Born in Hartsville, he was a veteran of Vietnam, having served in the Navy. He worked for Drake Air Condition Contractor before owning Storybook Ranch Preschool. He was a true Southern gentleman, who was also a 32nd degree Mason and Shriner.

Survivors include his wife of 12 years, Francesca R. Gardner (Frankie) ; children, George Wilson (Janice Kearney) Gardner III, Michael Dean (Cynthia) Gardner and Vickie Lynn (Danny) Coleman; step–sons, Samuel and Todd Simpson; mother, Maude Gardner; sister, Linda West; brother, James Gardner; grandchildren, April, Micky and Brandi Gardner, Devin and Daniel Coleman and Laney Simpson.

Pallbearers were Richard Freeman, Matt Raker, Todd Simpson and Samuel Simpson.

The family is requesting donations be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital, 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, Fla., in care of George Wilson Gardner Jr.

BEATRICE McCLENDON

McBEE — Funeral services for Beatrice McClendon, 65, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 26, 2004, at Faith Tabernacle Prayer House in McBee. Burial will be in Pine Forest Memorial cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. McClendon died Tuesday, June 22, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Naomi Robinson Johnson and Valentine Phillips. She received her education in the Darlington County public school system.

Surviving are a daughter, Norma Jean Outen; one son, Stoney Mack McClendon, both of McBee; two aunts, Lena P. Scott of Darlington and Louise P. Wheeler of Hartsville; one grandchild, Eugene Tacio Robinson; six step–sons, 20 great–grandchildren and a host of other close relatives and friends.

ANNA W. FLETCHER

COLUMBIA — Funeral services for Anna Wilson Fletcher, 43, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 28, 2004, at Cindey Park CME Church in Columbia. Burial will be in New Hopewell Baptist Church cemetery in Darlington, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Fletcher died Saturday, June 19, after receiving injuries from an automobile accident. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of Lula Mae Wilson and the late Gary Wilson. She received her education in the Richland County public school system and was employed with the Ramada Inn in Columbia for several years.

Surviving other than her mother of Columbia are her husband, Duane Fletcher of Lakeland, Fla.; one daughter, LaKensha Mackey of Lakeland, Fla.; one son, Emmanuel Fletcher of Columbia; two sisters, Drusilla Centry and Jacqueline Blanding, both of Columbia; three brothers, James Wilson and John Wilson, both of Columbia, and Walter Colclough of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a special friend, Alphonso Hampton of Columbia; three grandchildren and a host of other close relatives and friends.

TERESA MELTON

Funeral services for Teresa Gray Melton, 44, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 24, 2004, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Ed Griggs and Don Rhyne officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Melton died Monday, June 21. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of Loretta Smothers Gray and the late David Richard Gray Sr. She attended Middendorf Baptist Church. She was a wonderful, loving person, mother and grandmother.

Surviving are her daughter, Erica Rain M. O'Neal of Hartsville; mother, of Hartsville; sister and brother–in–law, Brenda Elaine G. and Barry Huggins of Hartsville; brother, David R. Gray Jr. of Hartsville; boyfriend, Lee Jordan of Hartsville; special father–in–law, Charles L. Jordan of Hartsville; grandchildren, Blake O'Neal, Dylan O'Neal, Noah O'Neal; nephews, Alex Gray, Richie Gray, Matt Timms; nieces, Christin Gray and Shannon Boykin.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Sonda Lynn Sheffield; nephews, Jason Huggins and Andy Brown.

CARRIE MUMFORD

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Carrie Bea Mumford were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 24, 2004, in Glorious Apostolic Holiness Church with Bishop Joseph Hines, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home Inc.

Mrs. Mumford died Monday, June 21, in a Columbia nursing home after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Sam Sims and Marie Joe. She was the widow of Robert Mumford Sr.

She received her formal education in the Darlington County public schools and was a member of Gethsemane Apostolic Holiness Church of Jesus Christ.

Survivors include six daughters, Ruby (Frederick) Tyson, Evelyn Mumford, both of Charlotte, N.C., Larry (Betty) Mumford of Lancaster and David R. Mumford of Atlanta, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; seven great–grandchildren; three brothers, James (Emma) Robinson, Ralph Askins, both of Baltimore, Md., and Wilson Deal Sims of Wilmington, N.C.; a sister, Elizabeth Ervin of Florence; six aunts; three uncles; in–laws; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Three daughters, Mazie Louise Mumford, Ethel Lee Mumford and Hattie Mae Mumford Lewis, and a son, Elgin Mumford, preceded her in death.

TED W. WITHERSPOON

LAMAR — Funeral services for Ted Wister Witherspoon, 71, were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, June 24, 2004, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home, Lamar, with interment following in Lamar cemetery.

Mr. Witherspoon was born in Darlington County, son of the late Harris and Lila Reynolds Witherspoon. He retired in 1990 from Sonoco Products after 40 years of employment. He was a member of Lamar United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Zelta W. Childers Witherspoon of Lamar; two sons, Bob and Bill Childers of Loganville, Ga.; a brother, Don Witherspoon of Irmo and nieces and nephews.

Memorials are suggested to Lamar United Methodist Church, PO Box 555, Lamar, SC 29069.
