JAMES D. PATTERSON

LANHAM, Md. — Mr. James D. Patterson of Lanham, Md., formerly of Hartsville, died Tuesday, July 20, 2004, in an automobile accident. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 27, in Gethesame Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Hartsville is in charge of local announcements.

MARTHA INGRAM

Funeral services for Martha Turner Ingram, 77, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 25, 2004, at South Hartsville Baptist Church with the Rev. Dave Worthington officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Ingram, widow of Rembert L. Ingram, died Friday, July 23. Born in Hartsville, she was a daughter of the late Clyde and Charity Maybelle Watkins Turner. She was retired from Hartsville Manufacturing.

Surviving are her sons and daughters–in–law, Sam and Debra Ingram, Glenn and Irene Ingram, all of Hartsville; daughter, Vicki Parker of Hartsville; sisters, Bonnie Watkins of Lexington, Delores Tolson of Hartsville; five grandchildren and three great–grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Delmas Turner and Wilburn Turner, and her identical twin sister, Mary Grantham.

ETHEL RAINES

OATES — Graveside funeral services for Ethel Elaine Sansbury Raines, 87, were held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 25, 2004, in Elim United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Raines, widow of Emmett Carl Doc Raines, died Friday, July 23, in a local hospital. She was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late Eugene Colon and Nancy Lizzie Anna Pipkin Sansbury. She was a member of Elim United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Judy R. (Linwood) Hayes and Janice Byrd, both of Oates; four grandchildren, Bruce (Dianna) Hayes, Jody Hayes, Nancy Elaine Byrd, Dia (Bryan) Dooley; three great–grandchildren, Emma, Zane and Kayla Grace Hayes; two brothers, Harry Sansbury of Oates and Eugene Bo Sansbury of Summerton.

Mrs. Raines was preceded in death by a husband; a daughter, Betty Jean Raines; two brothers, Ray and John Sansbury; a sister, Inez Alexander, and a son–in–law, Darrel Byrd.

Memorials are suggested to Elim United Methodist Church, c/o Muryl Gardner, 3586 Oates Hwy, Lamar, SC 29069.

MARIE B. STEPHENSON

Funeral services for Marie Belvin Stephenson were held at 3 p.m. Monday, July 19, 2004, at Ebenezer United Methodist Church with burial in Sandy Bluff United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Hartsville.

Stephenson

Mrs. Stephenson died on Thursday, July 15, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness.

She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late George and Lillie Coe Belvin. She was educated in the public schools. She was married to the late Johnnie Stephenson.

Survivors are six daughters, the Rev. Blondell Miller and Hattie Stephenson of Hartsville, Lillie Stephenson and Fronza (Lee) Pooler of Lamar, Patsy Scott of Fayetteville, N.C., Selma Prescott of Camden; three sons, Elridge (Lillie) Stephenson and Charlie (Sally) Stephenson of Hartsville and George (Patricia) Stephenson of Fayetteville, N.C.; a step–daughter, Mary Murphy of Lydia; a sister, Rosa Rogers of Florence; four sisters–in–law; 47 grandchildren; 87 great–grandchildren; 39 great–great–grandchildren.

LEROY ROBINSON

Funeral services for Olive Hendrix Pigg, 88, will be held at 11 a.m. today, July 16, 2004, at Wesley United Methodist Church. The Rev. David Surrett will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210 or Wesley United Methodist Church, 145 E. College Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Pigg, widow of Bascom Pigg, died Wednesday, July 14. Born in Pageland, she was a daughter of the late Daniel Vance and Dora Walden Hendrix. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and was retired from Tomlinson's with 25 years of service.

Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Wayne and Judy Pigg of Hartsville; brother and sister–in–law, Sammy and Allie Hendrix of Pageland; grandchildren and spouse, Julie Pigg, Miriam and Russ Norwood.

HAROLD ATKINSON

Funeral services for Harold Atkinson, 85, were held at 4 p.m. Monday, July 19, 2004, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with Mr. Jack Jones officiating. Burial followed in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mr. Atkinson died July 16. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late John Henry and Ola Dixon Atkinson. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co. after 44 years of service, a member of the Old Timers Club and was a High Priest in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Watson Atkinson of Hartsville; daughter, Sherry Hanniford of Darlington; granddaughter, Kim Blackwell of Darlington; brothers, Bobby Atkinson of Myrtle Beach, Albert Atkinson Jr. of Moncks Corner; sister, Grace Joyner of Camden.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Alvin C. Atkinson, and a grandson, Chris Hanniford.

STUART CANNON

Funeral services for Stuart Graham Cannon, 84, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 22, 2004, at First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Dr. Jeri Parris Perkins will officiate, and Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. A private family burial will be in Magnolia cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday following the service in the McAlpine Room. Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Home of S.C., 2350 Lucas St., Florence, SC 29501 or the First Presbyterian Church, 213 W. Home Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Cannon, widow of Dr. J. Ervin Cannon, died Monday, July 19. Born in Chester, she was a daughter of the late Dr. Samuel Cornelius and Annie Taylor Graham. She graduated from Converse College and was an assistant professor of music at Coker College. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and served for many years as their choir director. She was a faithful member of the Hartsville Music Club, and in 1988, she moved to the Presbyterian Home of S.C.

Surviving are her sister–in–law, Margaret C. McArthur of Fayetteville, N.C.; brother–in–law, James W. Cannon of Hartsville.

W.T. PIERCE

Funeral services for William Thomas W.T. Pierce, 74, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 22, 2004, at the Brown Pennington Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Hazel Mixon will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery. The family will receive friends this evening, July 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Pierce, widower of Mary Sue Evans Pierce, died Monday, July 19. Born in Williamsburg County, he was a son of the late Henry Thomas and Vera Matthews Pierce. He was retired from Dawkins Concrete. He was a loving father, grandfather and great–grandfather.

Surviving are his son, Mr. William A. (Sherry) Pierce of Hartsville; daughters, Mrs. Chris (Mary Lou) Ghoens of Hartsville, Mrs. David (Dianne) Boan of Luling, La., Mrs. Kenneth (Wilma) Crowley of Charleston, Mrs. Kenny (Annita) Waddell of Lexington; sisters, Mary Ann Sauls of Hartsville, Helen Drunker of Florence, Catherine Pierce of Kingstree, Jean Fitch of Olanta, Ruth Carraway of Lake City, Gail Drunker of Florence; brother, Jackie Pierce of Lake City; 10 grandchildren and seven great–grandchildren.

RANDY BLACKMON

DARLINGTON — Graveside funeral services for Randy E. Blackmon, 39, of Lexington, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 18, 2004, in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Blackmon died Friday, July 16. He was born in Darlington County, son of Jimmie and Louise Lloyd Blackmon. A graduate of St. John's High School, he was a former employee of Glassmaster Inc. He was a NASCAR fan and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to his parents of Darlington are a daughter, Lauren Allison Blackmon of Columbia; two brothers, Ricky (Wanda) Blackmon of Lexington and Jimmy (Shelby) Blackmon of Georgetown, and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials are suggested to Temple Free Will Baptist Church, PO Box 287, Darlington, SC 29540.

CHRISTINE ATKINSON

CAMDEN — Funeral services for Christine Walters Atkinson, 77, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 18, 2004, at Malvern Hill Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery, directed by Kornegay Funeral Home. The Revs. Greg Allen and Warren Weeks officiated. Memorials may be made to Malvern Hill Baptist Church Building Fund, 1514 Malvern Hill Drive, Camden, SC 29020.

Mrs. Atkinson, widow of Jacob Jake Atkinson, died Friday, July 16. Born in Hartsville, she was the daughter of the late Daniel W. and Mary Doshia Outlaw Walters. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great–grandmother. She retired from B.C. Moore. Mrs. Atkinson was a member of Malvern Hill Baptist Church, the Dorcus Sunday School Class, the Mustard Seeds and Young at Heart Group. She enjoyed gardening and music.

Surviving are daughters, Mrs. Larry (Pat) Godwin Jr., Mrs. Jimmy (Vikki) Stevenson Jr. and Mrs. Ted (Debbie) Crolley, all of Camden; son and daughter–in–law, Michael and Wanda Atkinson of Lugoff; five grandchildren and seven great–grandchildren, and a sister, Lillie Munn of Hartsville.

She was predeceased by a son, Mitchell Atkinson; two sisters, Bertie Freeman and Ellen Griggs; and brothers, Gary and Edward Walters.

RICK GALLOWAY

Funeral services for Mr. Derrick Allen Rick Galloway, 51, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 17, 2004, at Mt. Elon Baptist Church with the Rev. Matthew Rucker officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mr. Galloway died July 14. He was born in Darlington County, the son of the late William Lewis and Kate Amerson Galloway. He was a member of Mt. Elon Baptist Church where he was a former deacon. He was past president of the Hartsville Jaycees, previously employed with Sonoco Products Company for 33 years as Hartsville hourly payroll manager, a member of The Old Timers Club and was employed with Hylex Plastics.

Surviving are one son and daughter–in–law, Garrett A. and Robyn Galloway of West Columbia; one daughter and son–in–law, Jennifer and James Rucker of St. Matthews; foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Haney of Hartsville; foster brother, Dr. Wayne Haney of Darlington; foster sister, Martha Barr of Newberry; one grandchild, Garrett (Rhett) A. Galloway Jr. of West Columbia.

PATRICIA L. BRIGMAN

Funeral services for Mrs Patricia Lampley Brigman, 63, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 18, 2004, at Edwards Chapel Church in Society Hill. Burial followed in Hurst cemetery in Chesterfield, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Brigman died Thursday, July 15. She was born in Chesterfield County, the daughter of the late James Robert and Mary Boan Lampley. She was retired from Sara Lee Hoisery and was the owner of Brigman's Produce at the Pee Dee State Farmers Market in Florence, where she greeted everyone with her wonderful smile.

Surviving are two sons, J.R. Brigman of Hartsville and Wayne Brigman of Florence; one daughter, Teresa Brigman; one brother, Charles (Jimmy) Lampley of Bennetsville; one sister, Shirley Haney of Kannapolis, N.C.; four grandchildren.

DOROTHY HAMMONDS

Dorothy Hammonds of Hartsville died Sunday, July 18, 2004, in Commander Nursing Center in Florence after an extended illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Hartsville. The family will receive friends at the home of her sister, Naomi James, 511 Rice St.

DAVID N. HOFFMAN SR.

SUMMERVILLE — Funeral services for David Newton Hoffman Sr., 76, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 17, 2004, at James A. Dyal Funeral Home Chapel in Summerville. Burial followed in Dorchester Memory Gardens, 11000 Dorchester Road, Summerville.

Mr. Hoffman, husband of Betty Knight Hoffman, died Thursday morning, July 15, at the Presbyterian Home of South Carolina, Summerville. He was born Jan. 27, 1928, in Chesterfield, son of the late Newton H. Hoffman and Mary Esther Hodges Hoffman. He was a graduate of McBee High School. He served in the United States Navy. He was a Bee Keeper for 38 years and a member of the Low Country Bee Keepers Association. He was formerly on the Board of Trustees of First Baptist Church (10 years) . He retired as general foreman with the Charleston Naval Shipyard after 30 years, and he was a member of First Baptist Church of Jedburg.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, C. Emerson (Marcia) Hoffman of Tifton, Ga., David N. (Gail) Hoffman Jr. of Summerville; three daughters, Paulette (Collins) Patrick and Phyllis (Maynard) Floyd, both of Summerville, and Pattie (Carnell) Campbell of Givhans; a sister, Jennie Shoemaker of Hartsville; 15 grandchildren, Tina, Lisha, Deann, Clint, Clay, Jenny, Travis, Michael, Brad, Katie, Elizabeth, Trey, Jud, Hunter and Hillary; eight great–grandchildren, Brodie, MaKenzie, James, Anna Leigh, Joshua, Tanner, Kohl and Claire Grace; two special friends, Willard and Sydney Lee.

He was predeceased by a brother, Emerson Hoffman, and a sister, Viola Edwards.
