ROSEBORO, N.C. — Funeral services for Mrs. Elma Lee Sessoms, 86, were held Monday, July 19, 2004, at 3:30 p.m. at Butler Funeral Home in Roseboro, N.C., with the Rev. Dennis Guy officiating. Burial followed in the Mill Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
Mrs. Sessoms died Saturday, July 17, at her home. She was the daughter of the late Murphy and Ora Lee Butler Nayor.
She is survived by a sister, Estalene Naylor Campbell of Hartsville; several nieces and nephews.
FAY SOWELL
Funeral services for Lydia Fay McDonald Sowell, 55, were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 17, 2004, at North Hartsville Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Richard Bailey officiating.Burial followed in Union United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Sowell died Thursday, July 15. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of Ruby Rogers McDonald and the late Rudell McDonald. She was a member of North Hartsville Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Johnny Sowell of Hartsville; son, Andy Sowell of Hartsville; mother, of Morton Community; sisters, Robbie Yarborough and Virginia Gregory, both of Lexington, Lynn Brock of Hartsville, sister–in–law, Lawann Sowell of McBee; brothers, Billy Talbert of Columbia and Carroll McDonald of Hartsville.
GAYLE CASSIDY
Graveside services for Gayle Hadden Cassidy, 57, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 17, 2004, at Damascus cemetery with the Rev. Mark Dickinson officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Cassidy died Friday, July 16. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Ona Mae Litlejohn Hadden. She was a member of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church.
She is survived by a daughter.
SADIE SPEARS MILLS
TIMMONSVILLE — Graveside services for Sadie Webb Spears Mills, 91, will be held at 11 a.m. today, July 16, 2004, in St. Paul cemetery between Lamar and Cartersville.
Mrs. Mills died Wednesday, July 15, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. She had been a resident of Morrell Nursing Center in Hartsville since December 1999. Born in Aiken County on Nov. 16, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Joseph E. Webb and Sadie Whetstone Webb of Williston, S.C.
Mrs. Mills was a graduate of Williston High School, Edisto Academy and Florence Commercial College. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Timmonsville and lived in Timmonsville from 1960 until 1997 when she moved to Hartsville to be near her son.
Survivors include a son, Grover A. Spears Sr. (Patricia Kirby) of Hartsville; a brother, Henry (Nancy) Webb of Hartsville; a sister, Edna (Marvin) Jowers of Clayton, Ga.; a granddaughter, Patricia Athena (Joe) Moree of Hartsville; two grandsons, Grover Aaron Ron (Joyce) Spears Jr. of Lamar and John A. Spears of Cheraw; two great–granddaughters and three great–grandsons.
She was predeceased by two husbands, Aaron C. Spears (1952) and John Raymond Mills (1971) ; a son, Olin Webb Spears (1958) ; a daughter, Frances Ruth Spears (1981) ; a brother, Joe Webb of Clayton, Ga., and three sisters, Rivie Halford of Williston, Ruth Zetrouer of Gainesville, Fla., and Anna White of Cheraw.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Timmonsville.
OLIVE PIGG
Funeral services for Olive Hendrix Pigg, 88, will be held at 11 a.m. today, July 16, 2004, at Wesley United Methodist Church. The Rev. David Surrett will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210 or Wesley United Methodist Church, 145 E. College Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mrs. Pigg, widow of Bascom Pigg, died Wednesday, July 14. Born in Pageland, she was a daughter of the late Daniel Vance and Dora Walden Hendrix. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and was retired from Tomlinson's with 25 years of service.
Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Wayne and Judy Pigg of Hartsville; brother and sister–in–law, Sammy and Allie Hendrix of Pageland; grandchildren and spouse, Julie Pigg, Miriam and Russ Norwood.
BILLY McCOLLOUGH
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Billy McCollough, formerly of Hartsville, died in a Washington, D.C., hospital after an illness. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Hines Funeral Home of Hartsville. The family will be receiving friends at the home of his sister, Gedell Robinson at 1020 Timmerman Drive in Hartsville.
EDNA MAE FLETCHER
Funeral services for Edna Mae Galloway Fletcher, 83, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at St. Luke United Methodist Church with the Revs. Ben and Dora Gafford officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Elon Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Coker College, 300 E. College Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550, or St. Luke United Methodist Church, 302 Dunlap Dr., Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mrs. Fletcher died Friday, July 9. Born in Hartsville, she was a daughter of the late Clyde Nahum and Mae Howle Galloway. She was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. She graduated from Coker College, received her master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and taught biology for 30 years in Marlboro County and Myers Park High School.
Surviving are her husband, Nick Fletcher of Hartsville; sons and daughters–in–law, Nick Rusty and Vicki Fletcher of Lugoff, David and Charlene Fletcher of Hartsville; grandchildren, Joshua Fletcher, Brian Howell, Alison Derrick, Carrie Pergerson, Brantley Fletcher, Nathan Howell, Adam Howell, Emily Fletcher; four great–grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Sarah Galloway Pritchard.
JO ANNE NEAL
Funeral services for Jo Anne (Howle) Neal, 68, of West Hartford, Conn., and Hartsville, will be held Saturday, July 17, at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem United Methodist Church with Christian burial to follow in the church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Her family will receive friends on Friday, July 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. A memorial service will be held at Asylum Hill Congregational Church, Hartford, Conn., on Friday, Aug. 13, at 11 a.m. followed by a reception and visitation time. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 2236 Bethlehem Road, Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mrs. Neal passed into the everlasting arms of God on Monday, July 12, at her home in West Hartford after lengthy battles with numerous medical conditions. Her Heavenly Father finally whispered to her; Come on my child, you have fought a good fight, you have finished your course and you have kept the faith. Enter into eternal peace and joy with me in the place I have prepared for you.
She was born on Dec. 20, 1935, in South Carolina to J.O. and Ethel Howle and was raised there. She graduated from Hartsville High School in 1953 and attended Coker College in Hartsville and Winthrop College in Rock Hill as well as Texas Women's University, Denton, Texas, El Centro College and Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and Grossmont College in San Diego, Calif. She had lived in Longview and Dallas, Texas and San Diego, Calif. before moving to Connecticut in 1981. JoAnne was an active member of Asylum Hill Congregational Church, Hartford, Conn., where she was a dedicated Sunday school teacher, deacon and elder. She served as president of the Women's Association and chair of the membership committee and worked on many church projects and events, including the Boar's Head Festival. She was active in numerous community organizations, including membership in the Women's Committees of the Wadsworth Athenum and Friends of the Mark Twain House where she also served as program chairman.
Active with the Hartford Symphony Volunteer Association Board of Directors from 1986–1993, she had served as its president from 1987–1989; she also was a member of the orchestra's board of directors and its executive committee. She served as chairman of the Young Artist Competition and was a member of the Symphony On Ice committee. She was also a member of the Hartford Club and Hartford Golf Club. JoAnne is survived by her husband Robert L. Neal; a daughter Holly Lee Anne Neal of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a sister Jerrie Harvin of Myrtle Beach; a sister–in–law and nephew in Corsicana, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in South Carolina.
HILTON WALTERS
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Hilton Edward Walters, 83, were held Saturday, July 10, 2004, at Central Baptist Church with internment following in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Walters died Wednesday, July 7, in a local hospital. He was born in Lee County, son of the late Tommy Ellis and Lizzie Grantham Walters. He worked for Dixie Cup for several years and retired from Union Carbide. He was a member of Central Baptist Church where he was active in the Sue Blackmon Sunday School Class and served as a church deacon.
Surviving are his wife, Doris Brown Walters; a son, Bobby (Shirley) Hilton Walters of Connecticut; three daughters; Patricia Andrews of Darlington, Judy (Laurie) Hanna of Timmonsville and Susan (Bryan) Dove of Greenville; 24 grandchildren; 18 great–grandchildren; a brother, Johnny (Donna) Walters of Greenville; three sisters Christine King, Louise Sparrow, both of Hartsville, and Mildred (Ted) Purvis of Union.
Memorials may be made to Central Baptist Church Building Fund, 512 Spring St., Darlington, SC 29532.
WINDY DIXON
McBEE — Graveside services for Dennis Windy Dixon, 46, were held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 9, 2004, at Hebron United Methodist Church cemetery with the Rev. Larry Allen officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mr. Dixon, widower of Sherri Lewis Dixon, died Wednesday, July 7, 2004. Born in Darlington, he was a son of Mary Pridgen Dixon Johnson and the late Harvey Allen Dixon. He was previously employed with Sonoco Products Co.
Surviving are his mother of Middendorf; sister, Velda Bess of Middendorf; brother, Allen Dixon of McBee; niece, Hali Bess; nephew, Austin Bess; step–brothers, Alex Johnson of Middendorf, Randy Johnson of Hartsville, Homer Johnson of Perkasie, Pa.; step–sister, Amanda Catoe of Middendorf.
CALLIS WATSON
Funeral services for Callis Alma Watson, 91, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 11, 2004, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–day Saints with burial in the Society Hill LDS cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Society Hill LDS cemetery Association, Box 497, Society Hill, SC 29593.
Mr. Watson died Wednesday, July 7, 2004. He was born Aug. 18, 1912, in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Charles Augustus and Mary Braddock Watson. He married
Margaret Wallace on Jan. 12, 1934. He served his country during World War II by working at the Naval Torpedo Plant in Alexandria, Va. He came back to South Carolina in 1944 and returned to work for Sonoco Products Co. until his retirement in 1977 at the age of 65. After retirement, he and his wife served two missions in Washington, D.C., and one in Atlanta, Ga., for his church. One of his lifelong ambitions was to own a farm where he could enjoy the art of farming as well as create an atmosphere conducive to raising a family.
Surviving are his wife of Hartsville; children and spouses, Charles Wallace and Diane Watson of Eden, Utah, John Grant and Ramona Watson of Hendersonville, N.C., Pamela Watson and Gary Lichty of Farmington, Utah, David Wayne and Ann Watson of Lehi, Utah, Mark Thomas and Debby Watson of Garden City, Utah; brother, Hallie Ressie Cassidy of Hartsville; 43 grandchildren; 85 great–grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Callis Archie Watson, and his daughter, Linda Margaret Watson Lewis.
SARAH L. SISK
DARLINGTON — Graveside services for Sarah Lindale Sisk, 52, were held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 12, 2004, in Grove Hill cemetery directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.
Miss Sisk died Thursday, July 8, in a local hospital after an illness. Miss Sisk was born in Florence County, a daughter of the late Herman L. and Sarah Owings Sisk. Sarah had been sick most of her life. She left a lasting impression on those who loved her. She was a kind person and enjoyed laughing and playing and having fun.
Survivors include her care givers, Annie L. Jett and Carol Thompson, and her special friends, Cameron Jee, Patrick Douglas and Zachary Stoddard, all of Darlington.
MARY ETTA JEFFERY
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Mary Etta Monk Jeffery were held at 10 a.m Saturday, July 10, 2004, at Mt. Ephraim Baptist Church with the Rev. Livingston Cannon, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Hart #2 cemetery directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mrs. Jeffery died Tuesday, July 6, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born in Robeson County, N.C., a daughter of the late Amos and Annie McClain Patterson. She was the widow of Darvia Jeffery.
She was educated in the Robeson County public schools and later graduated from Mayo High School in 1973. She was a member of Mt. Ephraim Baptist Church where she served as president of the Pastor's Aide.
Survivors include six daughters, Sarah Jeffery of the home, Vanessa Bostick, Dorothy McRae, Evelyn Jeffery, all of Darlington, Sandra Washington of Fredericksburg, Va., and Debra (William) Bacote of Zachary, La.; six sons, Howard (Brenda) Jeffery, James Jeffery, both of Darlington, Nelson (Betty) Jeffery Sr. of Timmonsville, Byron Jeffery of Concord, N.C., Gene (Princetta) Jeffery Sr. of Clearwater, Fla., and Amos Jeffery of Fairbanks, Alaska; a host of grandchildren and great–grandchildren; two sisters, Mattie Ferguson of Red Springs, N.C., and Carolyn (Cecil) Harvey of Baltimore, Md.; a brother, Amos Patterson of Red Springs, N.C.; three brothers–in–law; four sisters–in–law; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Jerome Jeffery, and three brothers, Achie, Jakie and Pete Patterson.
WILLIARD P. HEARON JR.
UNION — Memorial services for Willard P. Will Hearon Jr., will be held at noon on Thursday, July 15, 2004, at the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home Chapel in Union with visitation at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until noon.
Mr. Hearon, husband of Yvonne Whittle Hearon, died Tuesday, July 12, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Suvivors in addition to his wife are a daughter, Merritt Donald of Greer, and a son, Tom Hearon of Travelers Rest.
