EMMIE T. SANSBURY

OATES — Funeral services for Emmie T. Sansbury, 89, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 8, 2004, at Elim United Methodist Church, conducted by the Revs. Edward Herlong, Bill Ishman and Rodger Martin. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.

Mrs. Sansbury died Monday, July 5, in a local hospital. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Henry Elias and Lena Lett Truett. She was the wife of the late Joseph Ray Sansbury. Mrs. Sansbury was a loving homemaker and an avid gardener. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great–grandmother, and was affectionately known as Emmie T., Granny, and Mimi.

Survivors include two daughters, Bobbie (Muryl J.) Gardner and Jeannette Blackmon and one son, Jimmie Ray Sansbury, all of Oates; six grandchildren and four great–grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Elim United Methodist Church, c/o Muryl J. Gardner, 3586 Oates Highway, Lamar, SC 29069.

DANIEL L. WILLIAMS

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Daniel Leon Burley Williams, 51, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 8, 2004, in Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. D. L. Hughes, officiating. Burial followed in Darlington Memorial cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.

Mr. Williams died Saturday, July 3, in a Florence hospital after a short illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Monroe Sansbury and Carrie Williams and was reared by his maternal grandmother, Louise M. Williams.

Survivors include his grandmother of Darlington; a son, Shanorris Robinson; three uncles; one aunt; one great–aunt; nieces, nephews and cousins.

SARAH HAM

Funeral services for Sarah Ham, 80, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 10, 2004, at the Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Ham died Friday, July 2, in a Wayne, N.J., hospital after an illness. She was born in Lee County, a daughter of the late Money and Carrie Lucas Dubose. She received her education in the Lee County public school system.

Surviving are five daughters, Betty Jean (Lee Ernest) Washington of Hartsville, Shirley Davis, Martha Ham, Dorothy Ham and Bernetha Williams, all of Patterson, N.J.; 13 grandchildren and nine great–grandchildren.

RUTH WELCH

LAMAR — Funeral services for Ruth Kea Welch, 69, will be held at 3 p.m. today, July 9, 2004, at Elim United Methodist Church. The Revs. Ed Herlong, Alvin Rogers, Glen Carter will officiate with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Elim United Methodist Church, 4532 Oates Hwy., Lamar, SC 29069.

Mrs. Welch, widow of Ernest W. Welch, died Tuesday, July 6. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Beulah Elmore Kea. She was a member of Elim United Methodist Church. She was a loving, caring, giving wife, mother, grandmother, and great–grandmother. She supported the church by sending cards to members in their time of need, and she loved cooking. She retired from Hartsville Manufacturing after 31 years.

Surviving are her sons and daughters–in–law, Mickey Welch of Lamar, Terry and Susan Welch of Hartsville, Steven and Beverly Welch of Bethune; daughter and son–in–law, Wanda and Danny Sansbury of Lamar; sisters, Pat Nelson of Hendersonville, N.C., Jessie Zacarrelli of Lamar; brothers and sister–in–law, John and Terri Kea and Billy Joe Kea, all of West Virginia; eight grandchildren and three great–grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Wesley Kea.

WINDY DIXON

McBEE — Graveside services for Dennis Windy Dixon, 46, will be held at 11 a.m. today, July 9, 2004, at Hebron United Methodist Church cemetery. The Rev. Larry Allen will officiate and Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge.

Mr. Dixon, widower of Sherri Lewis Dixon, died Wednesday, July 7. Born in Darlington, he was a son of Mary Pridgen Dixon Johnson and the late Harvey Allen Dixon. He was previously employed with Sonoco Products Co.

Surviving are his mother of Middendorf; sister, Velda Bess of Middendorf; brother, Allen Dixon of McBee; niece, Hali Bess; nephew, Austin Bess.

MILDRED HARRELL

Funeral services for Mildred Garner Harrell, 88, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 8, 2004 at Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mitch Houston officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Wesley United Methodist Church, Box 836, Hartsville, SC 29551.

Mrs. Harrell, widow of Jack Edwards and Rogers Harrell, died Tuesday, July 6. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late John S. and Miller Grooms Garner. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and The Sowell McIntosh Sunday School class. She was retired as an interior decorator with Hartsville Furniture Galleries and was a member of the Pilot Club.

Surviving are her step–son and spouse, William and Cindy Harrell of Hartsville; step–daughter and spouse, Camilla and Jimmy Stewart of Hartsville; niece, Irene G. Carrigan of Darlington; nephews and spouses, David L. and Ardie Garner of Las Vegas, Nev., and James and Judy Wilson of Raleigh, N.C.

MAE FRANCES JOHNSON

Funeral services for Mae Frances Johnson were held Thursday, July 1, 2004, at 4 p.m. at the Church of Christ in the Cypress community with Brother Silas Prescott officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Lamar.

Mrs. Johnson died on Sunday, June 27, in a Florence hospital after an illness.

She was born June 1, 1944, in Florence County, a daughter of Joseph McDowell and the late Gertie Solomon McDowell. She was educated in the public schools of the county. She was a teacher for the Darlington County Head Start program for many years. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Cypress where she sang in the Senior Choir and worked on the pledge committee.

Survivors include her father Joseph McDowell; her husband, James Johnson of Hartsville; four daughters, Modestine (Larry) Robinson, Annette Johnson and Cheryl Johnson, all of Hartsville, and Joyce Jackson of Darlington; an adopted daughter, Joyce Jackson of Hartsville; three sons, James (Diane) Johnson, Gerald (Teresa) Johnson and Jimmy (Karhan) McDowell, all of Hartsville; a sister, Mary McDowell; a special friend, Michael Johnson; 13 grandchildren; one great–grandchild and many other relatives and very dear friends.

JUDITH BOATWRIGHT

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Judith Boatwright, 65, were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 1, 2004, at Free Will Baptist Bible Church, conducted by the Rev. Jody Wynn. Interment followed at Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.

Mrs. Boatwright died Tuesday, June 29. She was born in Darlington County, the daughter of Willie Lee and Ella Mae Oliver Suggs. She was a member of the Free Will Baptist Bible Church.

Survivors include one son, Timothy W. (Jan) O'Neal; two daughters, Paula (Ricky) O'Neal Chaplin and Gloria (Johnny) Howle, all of Darlington; two brothers, Randall (Linda) Suggs and Johnny Suggs, also of Darlington; four sisters, Margie (Francis) Duvall, Janice Miller, Helen Clark, all of Darlington, and Martha McLaughlin of Hartsville; six grandchildren, Shelley, Nicole, Erin, Brittany, Amber and Amy.

Memorials may be made to Free Will Baptist Bible Church, 316 Orange St., Darlington, SC 29532; McLeod Hospice, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29501 or The American Cancer Society, 950 48th Ave., N. Myrtle Beach, SC 29575.

INKY INGRAM

BETHUNE — Funeral services for Donald Wilson Inky Ingram Jr., 31, will be held at 11 a.m. today, July 2, 2004, at the Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Ed Griggs will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery.

Mr. Ingram died Wednesday, June 30. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of Donald Wilson Ingram and Joyce Barefoot Plattner.

Surviving are his spouse, Mary Battista of Memphis, Tenn.; father and stepmother, Donald and Beverly Ingram of Bethune; mother and step–father, Joyce and Donald Plattner of Memphis, Tenn.; two brothers, Thomas Wayne Williams of Memphis, Tenn., and Justin Mathis Ingram of Bethune; and grandparents, Ora Dell Ingram of Bethune, Gladys Lenora Morris of Hartsville and James Howard Barefoot of Ruby.

DARRYL L. COX SR.

FLORENCE — Funeral services for Darryl Lane Cox Sr., 64, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 3, 2004, at Pisgah United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Terry Martin. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.

Mr. Cox died Thursday, July 1, in a local hospital after an illness. He was born in Richlands, N.C., to the late Owen Bryant and Louise Humphries Cox. He served his country in the U.S. Navy and was retired as a service manager for W. L. Flowers & Company. Mr. Cox was a member of Pisgah United Methodist Church. He umpired for high school and was an ASA official. He coached Mite football for more than 25 years and was a volunteer for the Darlington High School Lady Falcons softball team. He also enjoyed dirt track racing and golf.

Survivors include his wife, Nell Cox of the home; a son, Lane Cox of the home; a daughter, Tina (Dean) Teal of Summerville; a goddaughter, Kimberly McClean, of the home; a brother, Heyward B. (Annette) Cox of Burgaw, N.C., and a granddaughter, Nora Teal.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home tonight, Friday, from 6 to 8.

Memorials may be made to the Darlington High School Lady Falcons softball team, 525 Spring St., Darlington, SC 29532.

BESSIE PEOPLES

LAMAR — Funeral services for Bessie Peoples, 97, of Bishopville were held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at Sandy Grove United Methodist Church of Lamar, the Rev. Charles K. Wilson, pastor. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc., of Lamar.

Mrs. Peoples died on Saturday, June 26, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born to the late Walker and Fannie (Lee) Gordon. She was married to the late Isaac Peoples, and to this union three children were born, two of whom survive her. She also raised Mary Barber as her own daughter. She was first a member of the Baptist Community Church in Olanta and after moving to Florence joined the House of God where she continued her membership.

Survivors are a son, Otis Peoples of Lamar; a daughter, Frances Peoples of Bishopville; -two sisters, Jessie Lee McFadden and Chessie Vivian of Florence; daughter–in–law, Dorothy Peoples of Fayetteville, N.C.; 19 grandchildren; 38 great–grandchildren and 18 great–great–grandchildren.

DEBORAH ANN GRANT

LAMAR — Deborah Ann Grant died Tuesday, June 30, 2004, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Hartsville. The family will receive friends at the home of her mother, Ella Joyner of 205 -E. Depot St., Society Hill. -

ELIZABETH MELTON

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Elizabeth Hill Enzor Melton, 83, will be held at 11 a.m. today, July 2, 2004, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with the Rev. Timothy Coker officiating. Burial will follow in Darlington Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Melton died Tuesday, June 29, in a local hospital. She was born in Florence county, daughter of the late Thomas Eron and Carrie Langston Hill. Mrs. Melton was employed by Dixie Cup for more than 34 years. She was a member of Central Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Alberta (Wade) O'Neal of Darlington; two sons, Daniel (Phyllis) Enzor of Memphis, Tenn., and Earl (Anita) Enzor of Raleigh, N.C.; a step–daughter, Joanne Melton Graves of Darlington; 11 grandchildren; 21 great–grandchildren; four brothers, T.D. (Virginia ) Hill of Florence, Jack G. (Chelley) Hill of Florence, Ray (Francis) Bird Hill of Arlington, Texas, and Richard (Linda) Hill of Asheville, N.C.

Mrs. Melton was preceded in death by a husband, Walter Ralph Melton; two step–sons, Sidney and Ted Melton, and a brother, Talmadge Hill.

EUGENE KING

SOCIETY HILL — Graveside services for Eugene King, 79, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at Welsh Neck Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington.

Mr. King died Sunday, July 4, at his home after a long illness. He was born in Pineville, Ky., to the late John and Gertrude Miller King. He served his country in the U.S. Navy aboard destroyers in the Pacific during World War II. Mr. King retired from INA Bearing and later taught tool and dye at Chesterfield Technical College. After retirement he spent time reading, fishing and growing roses.

Mr. King was preceded in death by a great–grandchild, Trista Reynolds.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce King of Society Hill; a son, Tommy King of Florence; a daughter, Gayle (Ken) Rowlett of Darlington; a sister, Jewel Beverly of Pineville, Ky.; four grandchildren, Michelle Rowlett (Greg) Reynolds of Darlington, Dirk Rowlett of Columbia, Tonya (Jon) Dellinger of Florence and Danny (Kasey) King of Timmonsville; and four great–grandchildren, Katie King, Kenneth Poston, Johnny Eugene King and Logan Reynolds.

Memorials may be made to the Society Hill Rescue Squad, PO Box 291, Society Hill, SC 29593.
