DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Elizabeth Hill Enzor Melton, 83, will be held at 11 a.m. today, July 2, 2004, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with the Rev. Timothy Coker officiating. Burial will follow in Darlington Memory Gardens.
Mrs. Melton died Tuesday, June 29, in a local hospital. She was born in Florence county, daughter of the late Thomas Eron and Carrie Langston Hill. Mrs. Melton was employed by Dixie Cup for more than 34 years. She was a member of Central Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Alberta (Wade) O'Neal of Darlington; two sons, Daniel (Phyllis) Enzor of Memphis, Tenn., and Earl (Anita) Enzor of Raleigh, N.C.; a step–daughter, Joanne Melton Graves of Darlington; 11 grandchildren; 21 great–grandchildren; four brothers, T.D. (Virginia ) Hill of Florence, Jack G. (Chelley) Hill of Florence, Ray (Francis) Bird Hill of Arlington, Texas, and Richard (Linda) Hill of Asheville, N.C.
Mrs. Melton was preceded in death by a husband, Walter Ralph Melton; two step–sons, Sidney and Ted Melton, and a brother, Talmadge Hill.
MAE P. ROBERTSON
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Mae Parker Robertson, 67, were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 1, 2004, in the Kistler Chapel conducted by the Rev. Gerald Truluck. Burial followed in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.
Mrs. Robertson died Monday, June 28, at her residence after a long illness. She was born in Jefferson County, Fla., to Jeff and Bertha Lee Braswell. Born on Jan. 13, 1937, she was the fifth of 10 children. She moved to Beaufort and attended business school in Savannah, Ga.
Mrs. Robertson and her husband moved to the Florence–Darlington area in 1961 and helped start several local golf courses. In 1968 they built Tifton Golf Club, later renamed Beavercreek Golf Course, and ran this for 27 years.
Mrs. Robertson was predeceased by her parents and sisters, Virginia Goodreau and Daisy Givens.
She is survived by her husband of 44 years, James Jim Robertson; two sons, Billy (Robin) Parker of Florence and Anthony (Judy) Parker of Myrtle Beach; a grandson, whom she loved as a son, Bryan Anthony Roland Parker of the home; three brothers, David (Gay) Braswell, James (Shirley) Braswell, both of Florida, and Russell (Joyce) Braswell of Alabama; three sisters, Mary (Harold) Powers of Virginia, Irene (Bob) Waldow and Betty (John) Hudson, both of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

ANNETTE M. SMOTHERS
Funeral services for Annette Melton Smothers, 70, were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 1, 2004, in the chapel of Norton Funeral Home. Burial was in New Providence Baptist Church cemetery.
Mrs. Smothers died Monday, June 28. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Sam and Julia Truett Melton.
Surviving are two sons, Glenn Malphus of Darlington and Charles Malphus of Hartsville; step–children, William (Pee Wee) Smothers and Lorette Gray of Hartsville, Gerald Smothers of Columbia and Carolyn Kania of Suffolk, Va.; five sisters, Frances Cox of Darlington, Mary Hodges of Summerton, Thelma McLaurin of Wade, N.C., Carol Melton and Marguerite Jones of Hartsville; a brother, James H. Melton Sr. of Hartsville; six grandchildren; eight great–grandchildren and eight step–grandchildren.
JAMES SLATER
Funeral services for James Slater, 56, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at Second Baptist Church with the Rev. J. D. Blue officiating. Burial will be in Sandy Bluff United Methodist Church cemetery, Bishopville, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Slater died Tuesday, Aug. 3, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Lillie Ann Lucas Slater and the late Sylvester Slater. He received his education in the Darlington County public school system. He attended Second Baptist Church and was employed for 37 years.
Surviving other than his mother of Hartsville are his wife, Louise Covington Slater of Lydia; two sisters, Elizabeth Slater Dingle of Hartsville and Ruby Slater Brown of Lydia; one aunt, Theola Holloman of Florence; an uncle; Amiglee Slater of Hartsville; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives.

QUEENS, N.Y. — Samuel L. Wilson, formerly of Hartsville, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 414 Society Ave., Hartsville.

Funeral services for Samuel Wilson will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at Jerusalem Baptist Church with the Rev. Isaac Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Florence National cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
ISAAC WOODS
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Isaac Woods will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Bobby Miller, pastor, and Bishop C. L. Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. Woods died Sunday morning, Aug. 1, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Lamar, a son of the late Mack and Fannie Bell Enoch Woods.
He attended Spaulding High School and was a member of the class of 1959. He spent several years in New York City. After returning to Darlington, he was employed with H & S Floors and Furnishing and later became a self–employed carpet installer.
Survivors include his wife, Nellie Dargan Woods of the home; a daughter, Doris Ann Sowell of Newark, N.J.; a son, Isaac Ray of Darlington; two step–children, James A. Dargan and Valerie Pinckney, both of Darlington; a sister, Lula (Robert) Aaron of Elliott; a brother, Burnette (Clairise) Woods of Madison, Ga.; six grandchildren; three great–grandchildren; an aunt, Ms. Cascade Feming of Timmonsville; an uncle, Ralph Enoch of Jacksonville, Fla.; six brothers–in–laws; nine sisters–in–law; a host of nieces and nephews.
The family is receiving friends at the residence at 740 W. McIver Road, Darlington.
JOSEPHINE JACKSON
Funeral services for Josephine Jackson, 94, were held at 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at Mt. Calvary AME Church with the Rev. Willie Graves officiating. Burial followed in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Hartsville.
Mrs. Jackson died Thursday, July 29, in Morrell Convalescent Center after an extended illness. Affectionately known as Jo, she was born Oct. 10, 1909, in Lee County, a daughter of the late Charlie Sanders and Mary Favor.
At an early age, Mrs. Jackson moved to the Oates Community in Darlington County. She accepted Christ and became a member of St. John United Methodist Church. She later moved to the Hartsville area and attended Centenary United Methodist Church and Centerville AME Church. In the late 1950s she joined Mt. Calvary AME Church and became actively involved as a member of the Stewardess Board, the Faithful Builders and the Women's Missionary Society, Mrs. Jackson was married
first married
to the late David Jackson and this union was blessed with two children. She later married
the late Roosevelt Jackson.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty Jo Jackson of Hartsville; a son, Levern Jackson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; eight sisters, Sarah Tucker of Bronx, N.Y., Marie Jackson of Sumter, Annie Mae Ludd of Winter Garden, Fla., Sarah Pollard of Apocca, Fla., Pertell McCloud of Rembert, Annie Bell Wilson of New York, N.Y., and Rosa Lee Jackson and Mazola White, both of Baltimore, Md.; eight grandchildren, 13 great–grandchildrern and three great–great–grandchildren.
CARRIE ALSTON
Carrie Alston, 89 died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, in a Florence hospital after a lengthy illness. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Hartsville. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Anne Ceasar, at 621 Evergreen Lane, Hartsville.
LOUISE WHITEHEAD
Memorial services for Louise Tucker Whitehead, 91, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, at St. Luke United Methodist Church. The Revs. Ben and Dora Gafford will officiate and Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Memorials may be made to the St. Luke United Methodist Church of Hartsville or the First Presbyterian Church of Covington, Va.
Mrs. Whitehead, widow of F. David Dave Whitehead, died Friday, July 30, 2004. - Born in Gloucester, Va., she was a daughter of the late Wilton Conway and Cora Griswald Tucker. She resided in Covington, Va., for 40 years and in 1986 moved to Hartsville. She was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church, Women's Sunday School class and XYZ club. -
Surviving are her sons and daughters–in–law, David and Gloria Whitehead of Cary, N.C., John and Patty Whitehead of Hartsville; sister, Julia Smith of Culpepper, Va.; grandsons, Matthew, Brian, John, Adam and Ross Whitehead.
ELIZABETH RHINEHARDT
Graveside services for Elizabeth Detrich Rhinehardt, 90, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. at the Methodist Manor in Florence with Chaplain Ann Ayres officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. -
Mrs. Rhinehardt, widow of Wheeler A. Rhinehardt, died Saturday, July 31. Born in Kansas City, Mo., she was a daughter of the late William Leslie and Avis Perry Detrich. She received her Master of Science degree from the University of Nebraska and taught high school for 40 years in Lydia and Hartsville. She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church and the Ladies Bible Class. She had also been a member of the Darlington County Library Board, a charter member of the Lydia Senior Citizens Club, and a member of the Rose Trellis Garden Club. She served two years in the U.S. Marine Corps. -
Surviving are her sister, Helen Coulter of Lincoln, Calif.

BISHOPVILLE — Graveside services for Jane Beasley Duke, 83, were held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, at Hebron United Methodist Church cemetery, Stokes Bridge Community with the Rev. DeVere Williams officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Hebron United Methodist Church, 242 Woodham Rd., Bishopville, SC 29010 or the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.
Mrs. Duke, widow of Thomas W. Duke Sr., died Sunday, Aug. 1. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late William Boyd and Aurella Woodham Beasley. She graduated from Lander College in 1941 and taught school in Blackville, McBee and North Hartsville. She was a member of Hebron United Methodist Church. -
Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Thomas and Margaret Duke of Charlotte, N.C.; brother, Francis Buster Beasley of the Stokes Bridge community; five grandchildren and 10 great–grandchildren. -
KATHLEEN WALKER
Funeral services for Kathleen Walker, 84, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Aug. 4, 2004, at Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel with Dr. I. D. Hodge officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mrs. Walker died Friday, July 30, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Robert Frazier and Alma Darling Frazier Railey. She was educated in the Darlington County public school system.
Mrs. Walker was a member of Word of Life Christian Ministries where she served as member of the Mother's Board and Prayer Team.
Surviving are one daughter, Wilma Middleton of New York; one son, Philip Pert of Kingstree; two sisters, Christine Allen of Hartsville and Nicey Delane of New York; three grandchildren; three great–grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
MARGARET D. HUNTER
Funeral services for Margaret Dickey Hunter, 60, were held Friday, July 30, 2004, at Kay Branch Missionary Baptist Church. Burial followed in New Hopewell Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hunter died Tuesday, July 27, at McLeod Health after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of Henry Dickey and the late Lugenia Bacote Cotton and was educated in the Darlington County public school system. She was also a member of Kay Branch Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, James Hunter of Hartsville; two daughters, Nancy (Leonard) Clayton of Raleigh, N.C, and O'Vivian (William) Burgess of Columbia; two sons, Travis Jerome Adams and Dennis Ivan Adams, both of Hartsville; her father, Henry Dickey of Hartsville; four grandchildren, Curtiss Clayton, Justin Coe, Alexandria Austin and Antoinette Burgess; five sisters, Hattie D. Samuels, Wanda Cotton, Loretta Cotton, Minetta Benjamin and Shirley Delaine; eight brothers, Roland Dickey, Charles Dickey and Paul Cotton; a goddaughter, Sharon Bishop; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
