HOWARD BAZEN

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Howard Vernon Bazen, 76, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at Central Baptist Church with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Bazen died Wednesday, Sept. 29, in a Florence hospital. He was born in Florence County, son of the late William Milliken and Mary Alma Poston Bazen. Because of his kind heart and gentle nature, he was known and loved by many. He never turned down a man in need. Mr. Bazen has been popular in the area for more than 60 years of service in the restaurant business. Beginning in 1944 as a waiter, his first business was the well–known Chicken Basket in Florence. Currently, Howard Bazen's Family Restaurant, named in his honor, is owned and operated by Mr. Bazen's three daughters. Other notable establishments include the Southern Aire, the Darlington Restaurant and BJ's Family Restaurant.

Mr. Bazen was an avid sports fan. Spending time on the golf course was his favorite pastime.

He was known for his impressive drive, yet was often teased by his friends about his not–so–perfect putt. He coached men's and girls' softball for a number of years. Other interests include NASCAR racing and Atlanta Braves baseball.

Mr. Bazen was a Mason and member of Central Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Beaufort B. Bazen of Darlington; three sons, Howard V. Bucky Bazen of Florence, Johnny Bazen of Darlington and Michael Bazen of Florence; three daughters, Belinda (Al) Waldrop, Judy (Billy) Moore and Lisa (Buddy) Ralley, all of Florence; 15 grand–children and 10 great grandchildren; two adopted daughters, Donna Bazen of Hartsville and Lisa Kimrey of Myrtle Beach; a step–son, Wesley (Pat) Folsom of Darlington and step–daughter, Brenda Hayes of Florence; also, three sisters, Lucille Johnson (Milo) Kight, Chris B. Hyler and Jeanette B. (Wayne) Putnam, all of Florence; sister–in–law, Mary T. Bazen, also of Florence, and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

Mr. Bazen was preceded in death by his daughter, Carlene B. Bryant; three brothers, John Wesley, Frank E. Petie and George Wallace Wally Bazen and two sisters, Daisy B. June and Mary Harrelson.

Memorials are suggested to Central Baptist Church Building Fund, 512 Spring St., Darlington, SC 29532

HENRY GREEN JR.

Funeral services for Henry Green Jr., 49, will be held Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at The Living Church of Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith. Burial will follow in the Pine Forest Memorial Chapel, conducted by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Green died Tuesday, Oct. 5, after an illness. He was born in Lee County, a son of the late Henry and Azalee Isaac Green Sr. He was educated in the Lee County public schools and was a member of The Living Church of Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith. He was also a retired employee of Dupont–Invista.

Surviving are his wife, Cathy Green of McBee; two sons, Henry Green III and Joshua Devale Green, both of the home; seven sisters, Carrie G. Muldrow, Mary Ann Green, Ethel (Ernest) James, all of McBee, Brenda Green of Sumter, Mary Alice (Donald) Clark and Geneva Green, both of Columbia, and Georgia Martin of Bishopville; four brothers, James E. (Jeanette) Green of Dalzell, Lucious L. (Tonette) Green of Walterboro, Tommy L. (Lynn) Williams of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Kelly Tention of Woodrow; in–laws; three aunts; two uncles and two great–grandaunts; nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

LUTRICIA ANN BUSH

Lutricia Ann Bush, 42, formerly of Dovesville, died on Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was the daughter of Rebecca Bush and Charles Dickey. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Hartsville.

SANDY RODGERS

FLORENCE — Funeral services for Sandy Rodgers, 42, will be h eld at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, at Edwards Chapel Baptist Church in Society Hill with interment following in Harris Creek cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Rodgers died Thursday, Sept. 30, in a Florence hospital. She was born in Cheraw, the daughter of Linda Garrett Hodge and the late Burt EliB. E. Hodge. She sang with many area bands and was well–known for her talented voice. She was a nurse and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to her mother of Florence, are her husband, Joey S. Rodgers, and son, Ethan Rodgers, both of Florence; two brothers, Paul Hodge of Florence and Keith Hodge of Gloucester, Va.; also a special friend, Angela Russ of Florence.

JIMMY CARTER

Graveside services for JamesJimmy Leslie Carter, 62, were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at Kelleytown Baptist Church cemetery. The Rev. Jim Beck officiated, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Carter died Tuesday, Sept. 28. Born in Darlington Co., SC, he was a son of the late Robert Leslie and Lucille Hicks Carter. He was a member of Kelleytown Baptist Church and worked at Sonoco Products Co. for over 16 years. He was very honest and helpful to all in need.

Surviving are his wife, Peggy Edwards of Hartsville; sons, Chris Carter and Brian Carter, both of Hartsville, and Brad Carter of Pageland; sister and brother–in–law, Mildred and Fred Hughes Sr. of Charleston; nieces, LouAnne Goodwrich and Melanie Hughes; nephews, Rick Stokes and Fred Hughes, Jr.

BEATRICE FULMER

Funeral services for Beatrice Driggers Fulmer, 88, were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at West Hartsville Baptist Church with the Rev. Tony Hemphill officiating. Burial followed in Westview Memorial Park cemetery, directed by Brown–Penning–ton–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the West Hartsville Baptist Church, 1003 W. Carolina Ave., Hartsville SC 29550.

Mrs. Fulmer, widow of Joe Fulmer, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004. Born in Olanta, she was a daughter of the late Erton Scott and Bertha Brown Driggers. She was a charter member of West Hartsville Baptist Church, taught Sunday school for many years, and was a member and secretary of the Lucile Williams Sunday School Class. She was employed with J. L. Coker & Co. and Freeman & Smith Jewelers and managed a discount house in Hartsville.

Surviving are her son, Michael Fulmer of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Rebecca F. and Dan Wiggins of Hartsville; sister, Eula Belle Langston of Rock Hill. She was preceded in death by her brothers, William Driggers, Carlisle Driggers and Thomas Driggers; sisters, Anne Atchison and Essie Mae Dennis. Very special friends include Betty Polson and Melva O'Neal and her canine friend, Binky.

HARRY LEE MURPH SR.

LITCHFIELD — A graveside memorial service for Harry Lee Murph Sr., 89, will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, at Chestnut Hill cemetery in Salisbury, N.C. Dr. Julian Aldridge of Lake Junaluska, N.C., and the Rev. Jeff L. Sifford of Hartsville will preside with Lyerly Funeral Home assisting and interment.

Mr. Murph died Wednesday, Sept. 15, at home at the Lakes of Litchfield. He was born in Rowan County, N.C., son of the late Daniel and Sophronia Moody Murph. He was retired and resided at the Lakes of Litchfield where he moved from Lake Junaluska, N.C. He was a member of St. Paul's Waccamaw United Methodist Church in Pawley's Island. He lived much of his life in Hartsville, where he was the owner of Murph Music Co., affiliated with Alston Motor Co. and was a licensed pilot with the Hartsville Airport. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church while in Hartsville. Upon leaving, he moved to Greenwood where he was the owner of The Dixon Motel until retirement.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ora Lee Shinn Murph.

Surviving are a son, Harry L. (Paula) Murph Jr. of McBee; daughters, Mrs. Brenda Logan of Pepper Pike, Ohio, Mrs. Daphne (Curtis A.) Chapman of Canton, Ga.; grandchildren, Harry Lee Murph III and Megan Murph of McBee and Robert Logan and Harriet Logan of Cleveland, Ohio, Christopher Chapman of Homewood, Ala., Carrie Ann Wellingham of Birmingham, Ala.; a sister, Mrs. Doris McNeely of Greensboro, N.C.; and a brother, Robert Murph of Cherry Grove.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Cauble, and three brothers, Marvin, Ted and George Murph.

McMillan–Small Funeral Home and Crematory of Myrtle Beach, assisted with arrangements.

GERALD C. BAINE SR.

GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Graveside services for Master Sgt. Gerald Carlisle Baine Sr., USAF, 66, were held Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at 2 p m. in Westview Memorial Park in Hartsville with full military honors. The Rev. Ray Smeltzer officiated, directed by Seymour Funeral Home of Goldsboro, N.C.

Master Sgt. Baine died Thursday, Sept. 30, at Wayne Memorial Hospital following a period of declining health. He was born in Marion on March 1, 1938. He served in the United States Air Force from October 1956 to September 1982. During his Air Force career he was stationed at bases in Texas, Kansas, North Carolina, Thailand and Korea. He was also a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was in the Strategic Air Command for 19 years as a jet aircraft mechanic and ground crew chief. He served in Tactical Air Command for seven years retiring as non–commissioned officer in charge of maintenance plans and scheduling.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Bibson Baine of Goldsboro, native of Hartsville, and his children and their families, Gerald Jr., Patricia and Caleb Baine of Princeton, N.C., Linda D. Baine of Goldsboro, N.C., Mark R. and Joy Baine of Spartanburg, L. Russell Baine of Goldsboro and Christopher L., Kimberly, Dylan and Josie Baine of Independence, Ky. He is also survived by brothers, Robert R Baine Jr. of Columbia, and Richard W. Baine of Raleigh, N.C.; his sisters, Mrs. George Baker (Sarah) and Mrs. Edwin Brown (Jennel) of Marion, and Mrs. Curtis Doggette (Peggy) of Pawleys Island.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Robert R. and Ethel Campbell Baine of Marion, his brother, B.W Baine and his sister, Dorothy B. Atkinson.

JACK VENTERS

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Andrew Jack Venters, 83, were held Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery.

Mr. Venters died Friday night at a local hospital. He was born in Georgetown County, son of the late Flemon and Daisy Larrymore Venters. He was an auto mechanic and operated Southside Garage. He worked with Chevrolet dealerships. Mr. Venters was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church and was a lay leader for 31 years.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Juanita Steadman Venters of Darlington; two daughters, Edna (Frank) Iseman of Darlington and Anita (Earl) Enzor of Raleigh, N.C.; four grandchildren, David Iseman, Mary Ann Thomasson, Laura Hilts and Catherine Rodgers; six great–grandchildren; one brother, Weston (Louise) Venters of Georgetown.

Mr. Venters was preceded in death by a son, Andrew Jack Venters Jr.

Memorials are suggested to Epworth United Methodist Church, 706 Pearl St., Darlington, SC 29532.

ELOUISE W. SCOTT

Elouise Wingate Scott, formerly of Hartsville, died on Sunday, Sept., 26, 2004, in a New York hospital after an illness. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Hartsville. The family will receive friends at the home of her brother, LeRoy Wingate, of 1025 Cherry Laural Drive.

JAKE KING

Graveside services for Robert Jake King, 78, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at Westview Memorial Park cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Richard Bailey officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Mr. King died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late James Leonard and Lila Northcutt King. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force and was retired from Sonoco Products Co. with 43 years of service. He was a Mason, Shriner, Hartsville Lion and was a member of the Forty & Eight Organization, Robbyn's Neck Hunting Club and the Sonoco Old Timers Club.

Surviving are his wife, Annette Glenn King of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Kim King and Gus M. Dixon of Columbia; sister, Sadie K. Bruton of Hartsville; brother, Carl W. King of Hartsville; grandsons, Andrew Mason Dixon and Robert King Dixon. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Drew King, Brock King, Mac King, Manning King and Bill King and sister, Betty Sullivan.

JESSIE PORTER

Graveside services for Jessie Cox Porter, 91, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Oct. 6, 2004 at Magnolia cemetery. The Rev. David Surrett will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, 145 E. College Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Porter, widow of Ben H. Porter, died Monday, Oct. 4. Born in Belton, she was a daughter of the late Ira Walter and Jessie Sanders Cox. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. She graduated from Coker College and taught school for 40 years. She also taught Sunday school for years, was a member of the Sowell–McIntosh Sunday School Class and was a member of the altar guild.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

BILL REYNOLDS

HOUSTON, Texas — Graveside funeral services for William Baron 'Bill' Reynolds, 61, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, in Lamar cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home of Lamar.

Mr. Reynolds died at his home in Houston, Texas, on Sept. 30, 2004. He was born in Concord, N.C., son of the late Loraine E. and Flossie Reynolds. He was a graduate of East Tennessee State University. Mr. Reynolds was a federal agent and received numerous awards and honors during his career, among them Federal Agent of the Year. The most rewarding area of his work was with the Fish and Wildlife Department, dedicated to the preservation of our wildlife and natural resources. He was a Shriner and member of the Tomball Area Shrine Club.

Surviving are his loving wife, Carol; daughters, Kellye (Jorge) Flores and Lynne (Judson) Bracewell; five grandchildren, William Alexander and Jorge Baron Flores and Callie, Jax, and Martha Bracewell; two aunts, Mary Lou and Connie of Lamar; also his dog, Dixie.
