DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Alfred L. Humbert were held in the chapel of Boatwright's Chapel on Main at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, with interment following at Darlington Memorial cemetery.
Mr. Humbert died Wednesday, Sept. 22, in a local hospital. He was born on Aug. 23, 1919, in Darlington, a son of the late Alfred L. Humbert Sr. and Edith Lowery Humbert. He attended Mayo High School, graduated from Lincoln High School in Kansas City, Mo., and South Carolina State College. He entered Meharry Medical School in 1941 where he was a Dean's List medical student. In 1962, he received his master's degree in cellular biology from Rutgers University.
In 1943, he elected to pursue a career in industrial chemistry and began his professional career as a research and development chemist with Phipps Products of Boston, Mass. In 1950, he joined Analab Laboratories of Boston as a chemist and Diamond Alkali in 1956.
In 1962, Mr. Humbert began his teaching career. He was instructor in biology at Fisk University, instructor of natural science at Michigan State University and a teaching fellow in a doctoral program at MSU. He was an assistant professor of biology at the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore and associate professor of biology at South Carolina State University.
Prior to his retirement, Mr. Humbert was a member of the American Institute of Chemists, New York Academy of Science and life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
He is survived by four nieces, a nephew and other relatives and friends.
REED LANE
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Sherwood Reed Lane Sr., 79, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, at First Baptist Church with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Lane died at his home Wednesday, Sept. 22, after an illness. He was born in Lamar, a son of Samuel Richardson and Bertha Gardner Lane. For 20 years, he had a radio/television repair shop. He was an electronics technician with Nytronics for 10 years and then with Southern Bell for 21 years. After his retirement from Southern Bell, he was the installer of Life Line united for the Darlington Pilot Club.
He was a member of the Darlington Kiwanis Club for 25 years. Mr. Lane was an active member of Darlington First Baptist for more than 50 years. He served as a deacon, Sunday school superintendent, training union director, Sunday school teacher, served on numerous committees and was the sound technician of the church for many years.
Surviving are his wife, Ila Cribb Lane of Darlington; two sons, Sherwood Reed Lane Jr. of Hartsville and Phillip David (Karen) Lane of Eagle River, Alaska; one daughter, Anne L. (Larry) Huber of Battlement Mesa, Colo.; grandchildren, David, John, Nancy, James and Bennett Lane and Elizabeth Huber; also one brother, Tracy Lane of Florence.
Mr. Lane was preceded in death by brothers, Curtis, Joseph and Lowell Lane and sister, Elise L. Taylor.

DR. MAURICE WADDELL SR.
COLUMBIA — Funeral services for Dr. Maurice Waddell Sr. will be held at 1 p.m. today, Sept. 29, 2004, at Francis Burns United Methodist Church with entombment at Greenlawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Mack. C. McClam officiating, directed by Palmer Memorial Chapel of Columbia.
Born in Jacksonville, Fla., Dr. Waddell was the son of the late Willie and Mabel Brown Waddell. He received his B.S. degree from Claflin College and a doctorate degree in educational administration from South Carolina State University. From 1957 through 1986 Dr. Waddell served as principal of many public schools throughout the state.They include Clio High School, Robert Smalls Jr. High School, Hartsville High School, Beaufort High School and A. C. Flora High School.
In addition to serving as principal, Dr. Waddell served as hearing officer for Richland County School District One (1986–1991) and returned to his alma mater, Claflin University, to serve as dean of men until 1994. He had numerous professional affiliations including his services as past president of the Association of Secondary Principals and a member of the South Carolina Education Association. Dr. Waddell was a member of the Alpha Psi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
Surviving are his wife, Doris P. Waddell of Columbia; five children and their spouses, Maurice (Gwen) Waddell Jr. and Marcia Waddell of Columbia, Doris Gilliam and Dr. John K. (Sharon) Waddell, all of Lawrenceville, Va., and Douglas K. (Jennifer) Waddell of Tallahassee, Fla.; eight grandchildren and a brother, Arnet Waddell of Jacksonville, Fla.
JAMES CROUCH
Graveside services for James Hampton Crouch, 81, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, at Magnolia cemetery with the Revs. Ben Gafford and Dora Gafford officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church, 302 Dunlap Dr., Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mr. Crouch died Tuesday, Sept. 21. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of the late Manning C. and Tincie Yarborough Crouch Sr. He was a charter member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and served on many church committees. He was a graduate of Wofford College, past recipient of the Wofford Distinguished Service Award and past president of the Alumni Fund at Wofford. He was Jaycee Man of the Year, Hartsville Citizen of the Year and three times Civitan of the Year. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was past master of Hartsville Masonic Lodge No. 173, past president of the Hartsville Chamber of Commerce and district governor of Civitan. Previously, he was president of Crouch–Scott–Crouch Insurance Agency and chairman of the board of First People's National Bank.
Surviving are his wife, Harriette Cato Crouch of Hartsville; son and daughter–in–law, J. Benjamin and Laura Crouch of Hartsville; sister, Dorothea Kemp of Daniels Island; brother and sister–in–law, Thornton W. and Arlene Crouch of Manning; granddaughters, Caroline Crouch, Halliburton Crouch and Claibourne Crouch.
REBECCA K. BADDER
FLORENCE — Funeral services for Rebecca Katherine Badder, 46, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Sept. 24, 2004, at Stoudenmire–Dowling Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at Mount Hope cemetery.
Miss Badder died Tuesday, Sept. 21, at her residence after an illness. She was born in Florence, a daughter of the late Victor S. and Katherine Saleeby Badder. She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church. She taught art at Wilson High School until she retired in February 2002 and also taught at Berkeley and Marlboro County schools.
Surviving are two brothers, Victor S. (Angela) Badder Jr. of Hartsville and William E. (Kimberly) Badder of Florence and one niece, Katherine Sellers of Florence.

BARBARA JEAN CATOE
Funeral services for Barbara Jean Catoe, 72, widow of William Murtis Catoe will be held Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, at 4 p.m. in the Chapel Norton Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Hebron Methodist Church cemetery. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service.
Mrs. Catoe died Monday, Sept. 20. She was born in Scotland County, N.C., a daughter of the late Lamar and Uclean Bowman Joye. She moved from Hartsville to Tallahassee, Fla., in 1998, residing with her cousin Donna Kirkley.
Surviving are her daughter and son–in–law, Annette and Tom Duffy of Allentown, Pa.; grandchildren, Celia and Lindsay Duffy also of Allentown; special cousin and caretaker, Donna Kirkley of Tallahassee, Fla.; great–aunt, Alice Byrnes; sister–in–law, Opel Hicks and special friend, Alice Husley, all of Hartsville.
She was preceded in death by a brother Gerald Joye.
BOBBY CRUMMY
Bobby Crummy, 52, died on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004 at the Carolina Hospital Systems facility in Florence. The family will receive friends at 639 Southside Drive. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Hines Funeral Home Inc.
N. J. PARKER SR.
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for N.J. Parker Sr., 78, will be held at 1 p.m. today, Sept. 24, 2004, at The Church In The Lord Jesus Christ of Apostolic Faith Inc., with interment following in Greenlawn cemetery in Columbia at 4 p.m., officiated by Elder Joe C. Tisdale and directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Parker died Tuesday, Sept. 21, at his residence. He was born in Lumberton, N.C., son of the late Fletcher Parker and Lula Mae Waters Parker. He was a retired mill worker and a member of The Church in the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith Inc.
Surviving are his wife, Linda Ivey Parker of Lugoff; eight sons, U.S. Army Sgt. N.J. (Liberty) Parker Jr. of Germany, Roger (Benai) Parker of Aiken, Ronnie (Lillian) Parker of Columbia, Gregory (Anne) Parker of Lugoff, Randolph (Amanda) Parker of Lugoff, James Parker of Lugoff, Jason Parker of the U.S. Marine Corps and Curtis Parker of Lugoff; nine daughters, Diane Parker of Hartsville, Loretta (Gary) Ratliff of Chesterfield, Tammy (Don) McMillan of Hartsville, Deborah Parker of Florence, Vicki Parker of Lugoff, Angie (Matt) Griffin of Kershaw, Patricia (James) Kile of Lugoff, Kathy (Jason) Combs of Lugoff, Anita Parker of Lugoff, and 16 grandchildren.
Mr. Parker was preceded in death by two sons, David Parker and Douglas Parker.
ROCHEL WINBURN
Funeral services for James Rochel Winburn, 81, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Sept. 24, 2004, at North Hartsville Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Richard Bailey will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Mr. Winburn died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late John Cordy and Henrietta Roscoe Winburn. He was a member of North Hartsville Baptist Church, the Hartsville Masonic Lodge No. 173, Scottish Rite, Omar Temple Shrine, Hartsville Chapter No. 91 Order of the Eastern Star, The V.F.W. and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 72. He was a veteran of World War II and retired from the Hartsville Police Department after 32 1/2 years of service.
Surviving are his wife, Doris Gibson Winburn, of Hartsville; sons and daughters–in–law, James R. Jamie and Loretta Winburn of Red Springs, John and Deanna Winburn of Mansfield, Texas; daughters and son–in–law, Dianne and Dykee Brown of Greenville, Joyce Mobley of Tennessee; sisters and brother–in–law, Lula Allene Tyner of Hartsville, Ruth Irene Howle of Santee, Meta Rae and Lawrence Oliver of Santee; brothers and sisters–in–law, John C. and Ellie Winburn Jr. of McBee, James C. and Pat Winburn of Union; step–sons, Jerry and Kris Johnson of Richmond, Va., Knoxie Johnson of Pflugerville, Texas, Rex and Donna Johnson of Savannah, Ga., Donnie and Melodie Johnson of Prosperity, Ronnie and Lynda Johnson of Hartsville; numerous grandchildren and great–grandchildren.
MAMIE P. McCASKILL
Funeral services for Mamie Perkins McCaskill were held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at Sandy Bluff United Methodist Church with the Rev. Raymond Cooks Jr. officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Hartsville.
Mrs. McCaskill was born June 11, 1917, in Lee County, a daughter of the late Crete Perkins. She was educated in the Lee County public schools and was raised in the farming community.
She was married
to the late Jack McCaskill, and this union was blessed with a daughter, Eva Dell McCaskill Ceaser, who preceded her in death. Two grandsons, Willie Charles Ceaser and Leroy B. Ceaser Jr., and one great grandson, Willie Charles Buckett Ceaser, also predeceased her. Mrs. McCaskill worked as a domestic in the home of the late Deak and Buck Skinner for more than 50 years.
Life is but a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. A great life has vanished, but fond memories will always linger on. Surviving to remember those fond memories include a sister, Nellie Price of Bishopville; granddaughters, Patricia (Donnell) Sanders and Annette Cabbagestalk, both of Richmond, Va., and Jeannette Ceaser and Evette Jones, both of Hartsville; three sisters–in–law, Roberta Harris, Lula Mae Newman and Estell Hant; a special niece, Cleo Davis; 14 great–grandchildren, 27 great–great grandchildren and many other relatives and very dear friends.
GRACE A. ALEXANDER
Funeral services for Grace Andrews Alexander, 83, widow of William Frank Alexander Sr., were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at Elim Methodist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Alexander was born in Darlington County, the daughter of the late Clyde and Ollie Mae Thomas Andrews. She was a member of Elim Methodist Church, and the DeEtte Oates WMU Group.
Surviving are her daughter and son–in–law, Ann and Andy Rhodes of Hartsville; son and daughter–in law, William and Mitzie Alexander of Hartsville; one grandson and his wife, Drew and Amy Rhodes of Savannah, Ga.; three great–grandsons, Jack, Aiden, and Gavin Rhodes, all of Savannah, Ga.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Marvin and Francis Andrews, and two sisters, Cora Truett Watford and Vera Parnell.
Memorials may be made to Elim Methodist Church, in care of Muryl J. Gardner, 3586 Oates Highway, Lamar, SC, 29069.

Funeral services for Mary Parnell Register, 83, were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roger Martin officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. -
Mrs. Register, widow of James Drew Parnell, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Henry Pierce and Mary Mamie O'Neal Jordan. Mrs. Register was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church. She will be loved and missed by her family and friends.
