LAMAR — Funeral services for Mr. Alvester McCullum were held Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at 3 p.m. at Bethany Baptist Church with the Rev. Emmanuel Simon officiating. Burial followed in Plaza Memorial Gardens, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Lamar.
Mr. McCullum was born Nov. 1, 1936, in Darlington County, a son of the late Sam and Rosa Lee Wheeler McCullum. He was educated in the public schools of Darlington County. Early in life, he worked on the farms of the county and later on became a master auto mechanic.
He was a member under watchcare at Bethany Baptist Church in Lamar.
Mr. McCullum enjoyed working on cars, and fishing was one of his favorite pastimes.
He was a friend to many, and his humor and wit will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was married
to the former Rosa Bruce, and they are the proud parents of eight loving children.
Surviving to continue the legacy of Alvester McCullum include his wife of 53 years, Rosa McCullum of Lamar; five sons, Levester McCullum of Darlington, Alphonso (Cheryl) McCullum and Eugene (Natalie) McCullum, both of Trenton, N.J., Lafayette (Linda) McDonald of Sumter and Aaron (Vanessa) McCullum of Catawba, N.C.; four daughters, Louise Jacobs of New York, N.Y., Rosa Lee McClain of Lamar, Rosa Lee of New York, N.Y. and Annette (Lucious) Sam of Timmonsville; one brother, Levern (Ida) Dukes of New York, N.Y.; one sister, Essie Dukes of Lamar; two sisters–in–law, Virginia (John) Spann and Area (Joe) Spann; two brothers–in–law, Rufus (Sandra) Bruce and Willie Bruce; four nieces; 20 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and very dear friends.
RICHARD GRIGGS
Funeral services for Richard Jesse Griggs, 70, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church with the Rev. Pat Orr officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 2236 Bethlehem Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550.
Griggs
Mr. Griggs died Thursday, Sept. 9. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Jessie Murray and Edith Griggs Griggs. He was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church and the choir and served as a lay leader. He was owner and operator of Griggs Thrift–Way for 44 years, served on Darlington County Council, helped start the Antioch Recreation Center and Antioch Rural Fire Department. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He loved his community and was a friend to all in need.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Miriam Jordan Griggs of Hartsville; sons and daughters–in–law, Rick and Darlene Griggs of Columbia, Todd and Jacki Griggs of Bellevue, Ky.; daughter and son–in–law, Teresa and William Hendrix of Hartsville; sister, Josephine Tolson of Hartsville; brother and sister–in–law, Robert and Betty Griggs of Hartsville; grandchildren, Jeff Hendrix, Beth Hendrix, Zach Griggs, Savana Griggs, Makenna Griggs; great–grandchild, Madison Marie Hendrix.
He was preceded in death by his son, Scott Jordan Griggs. .
KAY HOMAN
DARLINGTON — A memorial service for Sandra Kay Griggs Homan, 53, was held on Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Homan died Thursday, Sept. 9, at her residence. She was born in Darlington County, daughter of Hallie F. McNatt and the late J.D. Griggs. She was of the Mormon faith.
Surviving in addition to her mother of Bishopville, are her husband, Gary Homan of Darlington; son, Anthony Tony Campbell of Florida; daughters, Amy Nealy and Kristy H. Curry, both of Florence; step–father, Curly McNatt of Bishopville; eight grandchildren; brothers, J.D. Griggs Jr. of Hartsville and Michael Griggs of Dovesville, and half–sister, Lisa Griggs of Camden.
Mrs. Homan was preceded in death by a son, Todd Campbell.

DOT BECKHAM
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Dorothy Dot Hill Beckham, 87, were held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at Central Baptist Church. Burial followed in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Beckham died Sunday, Sept. 12. She was born in Hyman, S.C., daughter of the late Harry B. Hill and Olivia Hutchinson Hill, and was married
to the late Samuel Leon Beckham for 63 years. She was a co–owner of Beckham Distributing Co. and Beck's Wash and Dry until her retirement. Mrs. Beckham was an active member of Central Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for more than 50 years. She was a member of many church committees including the Building Committee, Foreign Missions, Pastor's Search Committee, Grounds Committee, Nominating Committee, Training Union director, Multi Focus Group No. 1 and director emeritus of the Women's Missionary Union. She was on the Bethea Baptist Home Board of Directors and taught Sunday school there. She was a member of the Pilot Club of Darlington for 43 years where she served on the Board of Directors and chaired many projects. She was Pilot of the Year in 1998. Mrs. Beckham was also a member of the Kalmia Garden Study Club.
Surviving are a son, Samuel Leon Beckham Jr. of Darlington; a daughter, Linda B. Shillinglaw of Darlington; grandchildren, Benjamin Ryan (Lynn) Shillinglaw and Samuel Frances (Katie) Shillinglaw; three great–grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Zackery and Victoria Shillinglaw; a sister, Joyce H. Hoffman of Darlington; a brother Billy B. Hill of Atlanta, Ga.
Mrs. Beckham was preceded in death by a grandson, Jonathon McKain Shillinglaw, and a sister, Ruby Corder.

ETTAREE HENSLEY
Funeral services for EttaRee Freeman Gainey Hensley, 71, were held at 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at Pine Ridge Church of God of Prophecy with the Revs. Marvin Griggs and Billy Melton officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hensley died Thursday, Sept. 9. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late George and Padgy Warren Freeman. She was a member of the Pine Ridge Church of God of Prophecy.
Surviving are her sons and daughters–in–law, Larry Gainey of Hartsville, Donnie and Lynn Gainey of Hartsville, Jimmy and Jodie Gainey of Abbeville, Grady and Cynthia Gainey of Hartsville, Dusty Gainey of Hartsville; daughters and sons–in–law, Gloria and Charles Brunson of Hartsville, Wanda Gainey of Florence, Sandra and Kenny Kelley of Hartsville; sisters, Daisy Brazell of Camden, Bernice Teal of Patrick, Margie Smith of Manchaca, Texas; brothers, Ricky Freeman of Hartsville, Chuck Freeman of Hartsville, G. W. Freeman of Florence, Mike Freeman of Hartsville. She was preceded in death by her sons John, Bobby and Ronnie Gainey.
JANE MELTON
Funeral services for Jane Hickson Melton, 59, were held at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at Lakeview Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Boswell and the Rev. Dr. Don Purvis officiating with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Lakeview Baptist Church Family Life Center, 202 Lakeview Blvd., Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mrs. Melton died Saturday, Sept. 11. Born in Hartsville, she was a daughter of the late Aaron and Agnes Woods Hickson. She graduated from Hartsville High School in 1962 and went on to become a cosmetologist, an instructor and finally retired as a faculty member of Hartsville High School. Jane will always be remembered for her sense of humor, bright smile and her loving, generous nature.
Jane was the loving wife of John W. Melton Jr.; the devoted mother of two children, son and daughter–in–law, Kevin and Cheryl J. Melton, and daughter, Cheryl E. Melton. She was the grandmother to Meghann and Kourtney Melton and sister to Betty Chapman and June Hickson. She was preceded in death by her twin sister, Jean Hickson.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to caregivers Joy Gandy, Mamie Richmond, Edna Melton and Ashley Lantz.
SAMUEL H. SMITH
BAMBERG — Funeral services for Samuel Harrison Smith, 78, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, at Miller–Rivers–Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Chesterfield cemetery.
Mr. Smith died Thursday, Sept. 9. He was born in Hartsville, a son of the late Joseph Richard and Nellie Windham Smith. He was a retired furniture builder and machinist and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Smith was a member of Bethel Baptist Church of Cope, S.C. He was first married
to the late Christine Clark Smith and then to the late Virginia Hall Smith and was also preceded in death by a sister, Creola Gainey Pack.
Survivors are his wife, Mary Nix Smith of Bamberg; two sons, Harry Smith of Greensboro, N.C., and Kenny (Jan) Smith of Ridgeway; one daughter, Jennifer B. Smith of Leesville; six grandchildren and three great–grandchildren; one brother, Josie Smith of Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters, Leola Woodworth of Los Gatos, Calif., and Lois Jones of Hartsville; two step–sons, David (Cheryl) Steen of Branchville and Wayne (Wendy) Steen of Cassatt; four step–daughters, Wanda (Terry) Still of Bamberg, Marie (Kelvin) Hall and Tracy Moneymaker of Orangeburg and Tammy (Bill) Crosby of Newberry; 18 step–grandchildren and 15 step–great–grandchildren; also special buddies, Prince and Shamoo.
JAMES RAINWATER
Memorial services for James Kirk Rainwater, 53, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Sept. 10, 2004, from the Chapel Norton Funeral Home.
Mr. Rainwater died Sept. 7, 2004. Born in Atlanta, he was a son of Joe James Rainwater and the late June Kirk Rainwater.
Surviving are his father; a son, Kirk Rainwater, Jr. of McDonough, Ga.; three siblings, Carol Burnette of Fairburn, Ga., Pamela Rainwater of Snellville, Ga., and Michael Rainwater of Hartsville, and one grandchild.
ALVESTER McCULLUM
LAMAR — Alvester McCullum died on Tuesday, Sept. 7, at the McLeod Regional Medical Center of Florence. The family will receive friends at the residence. All arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Lamar.
WALTER K. McLAIN
PATRICK — Funeral services for Walter Kelley McLain, 91, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at St. John Free Will Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Miller–Rivers–Caulder Funeral Home in Chesterfield.
Mr. McLain died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004. He was born in Patrick, a son of the late John Walter and Sara Vann Polson McLain. He retired as co–owner of Patrick Auto Parks and Body Shop. Mr. McLain was a member of St. John Free Will Baptist Church and was a member of the Woodmen of the World Lodge #1102. He was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Geneva Cassidy McLain of the home; three sons, Glenn (Maggie Lee) McLain, Eugene McLain and Wilson McLain, all of Patrick; one daughter, Gladys (John Charles) Parker of Patrick; two brothers, Harold McLain and Theodore McLain of Patrick and six grandchildren and nine great–grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Chesterfield County, P. O. Box 293, Chesterfield, SC 29709.
PAUL PJ JOHNSON
FLORENCE — Memorial services for Paul PJ Johnson, 54, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, at Green Hill Baptist Church.
Mr. Johnson died July 27. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Earl Johnson and Careen Williams. He was reared by his adopted grandparents, Henry and Daisey Johnson, who preceded him in death. He was educated in the Darlington County public school systems and also was a graduate of South Carolina State University.
Mr. Johnson joined Union Baptist Church in Society Hill and later became a member of Green Hill Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.
Surviving are his wife, Elzenia B. Johnson of Florence; two sons, Paul PJ Johnson Jr. and Brett C. Johnson of the home; his mother, Careen Williams of Winston Salem, NC; his father, Earl Johnson of Laurel, Md.; two goddaughters, Terri Green of Myrtle Beach and Lisa (Melvin) Gale of Darlington; one brother, Jerome Johnson of Society Hill; one aunt, Rachael Seel of Society Hill; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
AZALEE A. BROWN
Funeral services for Azalee Addison Brown were held Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Kellybell United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the Darlington Memory Gardens. Professional services directed by Hines Funeral Home.
Mrs. Brown died Thursday, Sept. 2, at McLeod Regional Medical Center. She was born on May 19, 1935, in Darlington County, a daughter of the late James Austin and Queenie Addison Waiters. She was educated in the public schools of Darlington County. Mrs. Brown was a lifelong member of Kellybell United Methodist Church in the Kelleytown Community. She was a faithful member of the Pastor/Parish Relations Committee, the Missionary, Past Superintendent of the Sunday School, president of the Adult Choir and the Youth Choir.
Mrs. Brown was a member of the Mt. Beulah #238 of the Order of the Eastern Star. She also participated for many years with Joint Stock of Hartsville. She was married
to Louis Brown and this union was blessed with seven children.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Louis Brown of Hartsville; four sons, Leroy (Diann) Brown, Johnny Brown, Donald Brown and Malcolm Brown all of Hartsville; three daughters, Ondra (Rev. Leroy) DuBose, Angela (Michael) Bosom and Dr. Janice Brown all of Hartsville; three brothers, Sammie Lee (Annette) Waiters, Willie Lee (Rosa Lee) Waiters and William (Faye) Waiters all of Hartsville; three sisters, Carrie (Joseph) Scott of Columbia; Brenda (Johnny) Cosom and Wilhemenia Adams both of Hartsville; adopted siblings, Patricia Smith of Newport News, Va., Shirley Pooler of Hartsville, Betty (Rev. Bert) Lattaker and Sam (Betty) Davis, Jr. both of Bennettsville; 20 grandchildren; 13 great–grandchildren and many other relatives and dear friends.
