Funeral services for Fran Rochelle Boan, 39, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, at Pine Ridge Church of God of Prophecy. The Rev. Jimmy Ray Jeffords officiated with burial in Damascus cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Boan died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Frank and Annie Lou Langley Mixon.
Surviving are her husband, Richard Boan of Hartsville; sons, Robert Dennis Boan; daughter, Kimberly Ann Eastridge, both of Hartsville; sister, Martha Hall of Gaffney; brothers, Mark Mixon, Ricky E. Brown, Robert M. Brown, Jr., Robert Mike Brown, Sr., Jack Brown, all of Hartsville; father and mother–in–law, James and Faye Spence of Hartsville; 2 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Steven Richard Boan.

Private services for Eva Catherine Joyner Rivers, 71, will be held at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Rev. Dr. Richard Bailey will officiate. The family will receive friends Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, from 5–7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to McLeod Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 East Cheves St., Florence S.C., 29506.
Mrs. Rivers, widow of Kenneth Ross Rivers, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Shellie Baxton and Eva Mae Hunter Joyner. She was a member of Fourth Street Baptist Church.
Surviving are her daughter and son–in–law, Debbie and Steve Richardson of Darlington; sisters and brothers–in–law, Brenda and Johnny Bass of Hartsville; Shirley and Harry Cassidy of Hartsville; brothers and sisters–in–law, Billy and Ann Joyner of Bethune; Bobby and Sue Joyner of Lancaster; Danny and Donna Joyner of Greer; granddaughters, Jenny Ponton, Jennifer Lee; great–granddaughter, Kayla Ponton; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers Eugene Joyner and Bruce Joyner.
ROGER ANDERSON
Funeral services for Roger Shot Kevin Anderson, 40, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Sept. 8, 2004, at Spring Branch Baptist Church. The Rev. Buddy Amerson will officiate with Masonic Rites at Rocky Creek Presbyterian Church cemetery in Jefferson, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Spring Branch Baptist Church, 5106 Middendorf Road, Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mr. Anderson died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004. Born in Kershaw County, he was a son of Sarah Newman Anderson and the late Charles Anderson. He was a member of Spring Branch Baptist Church. He was a member of the McBee Masonic Lodge #313, the National Guard Unit in Jefferson, SC – 3rd Battalion 178 Field Artillery. He was an avid handy man who loved to do work for others, and he loved to ride his Harley Davidson.
Surviving are his wife, Lori Ann Anderson of Hartsville; son, Justin Anderson of Hartsville; daughter, Heather Anderson of Hartsville; mother, of Bethune; sister and brother–in–law, Cathy and Rex Blackwell of Hartsville; sister–in–law, Dottie Anderson of West Columbia; grandson, Mason Anderson of Hartsville. He was preceded in death by his brother, Dennis Anderson.
ADDIE N. GREGG
FLORENCE — Funeral services for Addie N. Gregg, 83, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004, at First Baptist Church, directed by Waters–Powers Funeral Home. Burial wad in Mount Hope cemetery.
Mrs. Gregg died suddenly Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at her home. She was born in Hartsville, a daughter of the late Samuel Bartow Norwood Sr. and Ethel Howle Norwood. She was a devoted and loyal mother, grandmother, great–grandmother and sister. She was a dedicated Christian member of First Baptist Church of Florence, serving as a teacher of adults and youth. She was active in prayer groups, missionary groups, delivering Meals on Wheels, and served on the First Baptist Church TV Ministry.
Mrs. Gregg was also a member of Hopewell Presbyterian Church during her marriage to Mr. Gregg, serving as an Elder, teacher, and was active in the Women's Missions Group. She was a member of the Tea & Topic Literary Group, serving as president and committee chairperson, and the Plant & Pluck Garden Club. Mrs. Gregg volunteered for the Karos Prison Ministry and the Lighthouse Ministry, as well as tutoring at elementary schools in the reading program.
Survivors include one son, Lee Marion Anderson and wife, Abby, and one grandson, Lee Marion Anderson of Hampton, Va.; one stepson, Clyde B. (Ann) Gregg of Florence; one step–daughter, Anne (Larry) Mozingo of Surfside; three granddaughters, Melissa Leeann Caldwell Herndon, Va., Mardi (Tad) Crotros of Florence and Mrs. Baker (Daniel) Bryant of Darlington; four great–grandsons, one daughter–in–law, Evelyn Anderson of Florence; three sisters, Jeanette (Cameron) McNeill of Hartsville, Carolyn (Cecil) Winburn of Hartsville, Gwen (Bobby) Burch of Florence; a sister–in–law, Sylvia Norwood of Hartsville; a cousin, Peggy White of McBee; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by husbands Marion L. Anderson and Clyde B. Gregg; a son, Samuel Lonnie Anderson and a brother, S. B. Norwood Jr.

MARION GANDY
Funeral services for Marion Wesley Gandy, age 80, who died Sept. 2, 2004, were held Sunday from the Clyde Church of God. Rev. Don Childers officiated. Burial was in the Clyde Church of God cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mr. Gandy was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Julian and Harriett Atkinson Gandy.
Surviving are daughters: Julie Dannett Voglio and Marian Cynthia Hagwood, McBee; son, Eric Scott Gandy, Saucier, Miss.; sister, Edith Caddell, McBee; and six grandchildren and six great–grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by sons: Darrell L. Gandy and Aaron Gandy, and brothers: John, Jack and Leon Gandy, and Otis Freeman.
MARY M. PEOPLES
LAMAR — Funeral services for Mary Mack Peoples, 91, were held on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004 at the Church of God in Lamar. The burial followed in the church's cemetery directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Lamar, with Brother Levern Kirkland officiating at the services.
Mrs. Peoples was born on August 30, 1912, in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Robert and Maggie Martin Mack. She departed this life on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at McLeod Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Peoples was a lifelong member of the Church of God in Lamar. She was converted at an early age and was a faithful and dedicated member of her church. For many years, she served as a Sunday School teacher, a choir member and was a member of the Missionary Board.
Mrs. Peoples was married
to Willie Peoples Sr., and this union was blessed with two sons. Her husband and one of her sons, Ulysses Peoples, preceded her in death. Her loving daughter–in–law, Elizabeth Peoples, also predeceased her. She was a very devoted, caring and loving wife, mother, grandmother, mother–in–law, aunt, cousin and friend. Her wisdom and compassion was evident to all who knew her. To know her was to love her. She will be sadly missed by all.
Those who shared the joys of life and survive to cherish the loving memories of Mary Mack Peoples include her son, Willie Peoples, Jr. of Lamar; her daughter–in–law, Ethel Mae Peoples of Washington, D.C.; two sisters–in–law, Dorothy Peoples of Fayetteville, N.C. and Frances Peoples of Bishopville; a brother–in–law, Otis Peoples of Lamar; a dear friend, neighbor and the daughter she never had, Lettie Doll' Boston; 11 grandchildren, 27 great–grandchildren, seven great–great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, a host of other relatives and very dear friends.

Graveside services for Nanette Taylor Friar, 81, will be held today at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, at Rose Hill cemetery, Marion. The Rev. Ben Gafford will officiate, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Mrs. Friar, widow of James M. Friar, Sr., died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004. Born in Marion, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Boman and Mabel Gasque Taylor. She was married
for 60 years, loved to paint and garden and was involved in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and a member of the Lions Club Auxiliary of Marion, and the Gray Ladies in Marion Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Red Fox Club in Hartsville.
Surviving are her sons and daughters–in–law, Jim and Terri Friar of Summerville, Russ and Sheila Friar of Hartsville, Tom and Sharon Friar of Knoxville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Eric Friar, Sam Friar, Will Friar, Martin Friar, Hugh Friar, Mary Grace Friar. She was preceded in death by her brother, S. B. Taylor, Jr.
WALTER L. MARTIN
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Walter Leslie Pocket Change Martin, 44, were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, in Cherry Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. E. B. Burroughs, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. Martin died Friday, Sept. 3, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Jessie Son and Thelma Muldrow Martin. He was a graduate of St. John's High School class of 1978 and a life member of Cherry Grove Baptist Church. He was owner and operator of L. & A. Trucking Company. He was a member of Friendship Masonic Lodge #17.
Survivors include his wife, Loretta Samuel Martin of the home; a son, Arell Samuel of the home; a grandson, D'mareon Samuel; four sisters, Helen Martin, Jessie Mae Martin, both of Darlington, Mary Ellen Martin, Rebecca (Roland) Hudson, both of Hartsville; four brothers, Benjamin Martin, Calvin Martin, Alphonso Martin, all of Darlington and Johnny (Sherrill) Martin of Hartsville; in–laws; 10 aunts, three uncles; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; a special brother–in–law, Sylvester Coe; a special friend, Lloyd Pat: Coleman and a special cousin, Charles Pete Martin.
He was preceded by a brother, George A. Muldrow.
THOMAS JOHNSON JR.
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Thomas Johnson Jr., 50, were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept.. 5, 2004, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home, with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery.
Mr. Johnson died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004 He was born in Darlington County, son of Louise Isgett Truett and the late Thomas Johnson. Mr. Johnson was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving in addition to his mother are a brother, Ronald (Carolyn) Jernigan of Darlington, a sister, Judy (Gene) Pridgen of Darlington and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Jernigan, and a sister, Frances Ingstrom.
LESTER DUNMAN
Memorial services for Lester Edwin Dunman, 66, were held Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004, at St. Luke United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ben Gafford officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the St. Luke United Methodist Church, 302 Dunlap Drive, Hartsville, S.C., 29550.
Mr. Dunman died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004. Born in Bluefield, West Va., he was a son of the late Dr. Lester E. and Mary Ralston Dunman. He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. He was graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute after having served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Before retirement he was employed as Assistant Hospital Administrator in Pulaski, Va., and as Hospital Administrator of Byerly Hospital in Hartsville, S.C.
Surviving are his wife, Cherron K. Dunman of Hartsville; sons, Lester E. Tripp Dunman, III of Overland Park, Kan., David Kelley Dunman of Murrells Inlet; daughter, Beth Hughes of Nashville, Tenn.; sisters, Ann Mewborne of San Antonio, Texas, Linda Ballagas of Atlanta, Ga., Jean Koehler of Louisville, Ky.; grandchildren, Emily Johnson of Overland Park, Kan., Matthew Johnson of Overland Park, Kan., Luke Dunman of Overland Park, Kan., Danielle Hughes of Nashville, Tenn., Lauren Dunman of Murrells Inlet.

Mrs. Jannie C. Thomas of 804 Snow Hill Road died on Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, at a Florence Health Care Facility. The family will receive friends at the home of her son of 1416 Fox Hollow Drive. Arrangements to be announced by Hines Funeral Home, Inc.

Funeral services for Mary Ross Byrd, 86, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church. The Rev. Pat Orr officiated with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Byrd died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004. Born in Rockingham, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Lentford Chester and Maude Morton Ross. She was an active member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church. She was the Valedictorian of her graduating class at Antioch High School.
Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Jerry and Burney Byrd of Hartsville; sisters and brother–in–law, Roy and Jerrie Flynn of Hartsville; Ruby Nesbitt of Rockingham, N.C., Earline Hopkins of Hartsville. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Edgar Ross, James Ross, Boyd Hammonds, and Clyde Hammonds.
SUSAN POWELL MCRAE
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Susan Powell McRae, 44, will be today, Sept. 8, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Temple Free Will Baptist Church with graveside services following at 2 p.m. in New Prospect Free Will Baptist Church cemetery in Hanna, officiated by Pastor Todd Parrish and directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. McRae died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Florence County, daughter of J. E. Powell and the late Johnnie Ard Powell. She was a 1978 graduate of St. John's High School and was a secretary. Mrs. McRae will be remembered as always having a smile. She was a member of Temple Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to her father of Darlington are her husband, Allen McRae of Darlington, two step–children, Ben McRae and Shannon McRae, both of Darlington, a sister, Dianne P. Driggers of Myrtle Beach, a brother Jeffrey (Tammie) Powell of Conway, nieces and nephews: Cassie Powell, Bobby Driggers, and Joey Driggers, aunts, Carolyn (Kearney) Turner and Sherrill (Earle) Tyler, all of Lake City, and beloved pets Lucy and Savannah.
