CAROLYN HILL

BRONX, N.Y. — Funeral services for Carolyn Hill, 55, were held Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, at Friendly Baptist Church in New York. Burial followed in Kensico cemetery, directed by McCall's Bronxwood Funeral Home of New York.

Mrs. Hill died Friday, Aug. 20, in Bronx, N.Y., after an illness. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., a daughter of the late Louise Lattimore–Lewis and Nathaniel Lattimore. She was educated in the New York City public school systems. She was a member of Friendly Baptist Church and was previously employed as a health care provider before her illness.

Surviving are her husband, Bueford Hill of New York; her children, Lovander, Denise and Teresa Ann; two adopted sons, Michael and Maurice Gray; two step–daughters, Gretchen and Rachael; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Geneva George and Barbara Gray, both of New York, and Natalie Pearson of Long Island; two brothers, Nathaniel Lattimore and David Lattimore, both of New York; two brothers–in–law, Allise Pearson of Long Island and Herbert George of New York City; four sisters–in–law, Kim Lattimore of New York, Rita Hill of New Jersey and Harriet Glenn and Brenda Brown, both of North Carolina; two uncles, Ed Graham of Hartsville and Billy Tinton of Queens, N.Y.; one aunt, Naomi Tinton of Chicago and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

Local announcements are being handled by Young & Young Funeral Home.

ASHLEY JOHNSON

DARLINGTON — Memorial services for Ashley Edmond Johnson, 56, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Sept. 1, 2004, at Praise the Lord Ministries. The Rev. Randy Jackson will officiate with internment in Westview Memorial Park cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. -

Mr. Johnson died Monday, Aug. 30. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Edmond Bert and Naomi Odom Johnson. - -

Surviving are his sons and daughters–in–law, Anthony and Joy Creel of Darlington, Roger and Teresa Johnson Sr. of Darlington; daughters and sons–in–law, Nikki Johnson and Scotty Powell of Darlington, Tiffany Johnson and Jason Watford of Darlington; sisters and brothers–in–law, Ann and Benny Steen of Hartsville, Beverly and Kenneth Scott of Hartsville; brother and sister–in–law, Everette and Kathy Johnson of Patrick; seven grandchildren.

ANNIE BATTS

Funeral services for Annie Boswell Batts, 76, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at Lakeview Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Boswell officiating. Burial followed in Rocky Mount Memorial cemetery (Rocky Mount, N.C.) on Sunday at 2 p.m., directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Lakeview Baptist Church Family Life Center, 202 Lakeview Blvd., Hartsville, SC 29550. - -

Mrs. Batts died Thursday, Aug. 26. Born in Rocky Mount, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Hayes B. and Allie Pope Boswell. She was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church, Oasis, Crossroads Sunday school class, and a Family Life Center volunteer. -

Surviving are her husband, Leon Batts of Hartsville; son and daughter–in–law, Jerry and Joyce Batts of Hartsville; sister, Shirley Boswell of Kinston, N.C.; brother, Edward Buddy Boswell of Sims, N.C.; grandchildren and spouses, Donna and David Shaw of Florence, Scott and Christy Batts of Hartsville; great–grandchildren, Bradley Tarte, Allison Tarte, Madison Batts and Dalton Batts. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sheila Batts.

ANNIE 'JIM' COKER

Funeral services for Annie James Jim Hollis Coker, 89, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at the First Baptist Church Chapel with the Revs. Dr. Robert Bryan Whaley and Dr. Robert Cline officiating. A private burial took place in Magnolia cemetery prior to the service, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. - Memorials may be made to Northgate Baptist Church, 633 Summit Dr., Greenville, SC 29609; Free Medical Clinic of Darlington County, 203 Grove St., Darlington, SC 29532; or Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 1700, Chicago, IL 60601–7633.

Mrs. Coker, widow of James Reaves Coker Sr., died Saturday, Aug. 28. Born in Chester County, she was a daughter of the late Dan Saye and Maude McFadden Hollis. She was a member of the Northgate Baptist Church of Greenville, the Lottie Moon Sunday school class, and Nan Herring Circle. She was also a member of the Hillcrest Community Club and the Greenville Republican Women's Club. -

Surviving are her sons and daughters–in–law, James Reaves and Linda Coker Jr. of Landrum, Robert Wesley and Carole Coker of Taylors, Samuel Reaves and Kay Coker of Gilbert, Margaret Coker of Hartsville; daughters and sons–in–law, Anne Coker and Tobe Garrett of Fountain Inn, Carolyn Coker Moore of Mt. Pleasant, Fran Coker and Steve Clark of Pageland; sisters, Susan Williams of Rock Hill, Martha Williams of Leslie; brother, Mack Hollis of Dalton, Ga.; 24 grandchildren and 27 great–grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, Daniel Coker; brother, Dan Saye Hollis Jr.; sisters, Mary Faris and Maude Shannon.

RUBY MAE ROGERS

Funeral services for Ruby Mae Crowley Rogers, 85, were held at 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at North Hartsville Baptist Church with the Revs. Ladell Humphries and Dr. Richard Bailey officiating. Burial followed in Union United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. -

Mrs. Rogers, widow of Rudell McDonald, Fred Talbert and Murray Rogers, died Saturday, Aug. 28. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late John and Pearl Johnson Crowley. She was a member of North Hartsville Baptist Church. - She previously worked at the Corner Drug and Community Drug and was retired from Roses. -

Surviving are her sons and daughters–in–law, Carroll and Rae McDonald of Hartsville, Billy and Debbie Talbert of Columbia; daughters and sons–in–law, Robbie Yarborough of Surfside Beach, Virginia Gregory of Surfside Beach, Lynn and Robbin Brock of Hartsville, Johnny Sowell of Hartsville; sisters, Rae Biggs of Murrells Inlet, Edith Sellers of Hartsville; brothers, Larry Crowley and Frank Crowley, both of Hartsville; 14 grandchildren and 12 great–grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Faye Sowell, and brother, Gene Crowley.

MARY CECIL

Funeral services for Mary Vaughn Cecil, 84, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, at First Baptist Church of Bristow, Okla., with burial in Bristow City cemetery. Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Music Program at Kelleytown Baptist Church, 2609 Kelleytown Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Cecil died Tuesday, Aug. 31. Born in Covington, Okla., she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Sarah Crawford Vaughn. She relocated to Hartsville six years ago to be near her family. While in Hartsville, she enjoyed crafting, quilting, keeping up with current events, and she was a member of Kelleytown Baptist Church. Prior to her relocation, Mrs. Cecil, a native Oklahoman whose grandparents made the run into Oklahoma Territory in 1889, was a resident of Bristow, Okla. She was elected as that city's first female City Council member and was very active in other community activities, including the Baptist Hospital Board and the Business and Professional Women's Association. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Bristow where she was a long–time member of the choir. She was also part of the locally known BPW Trio, singing at events around the state for many years. -

Surviving are her sons and daughter–in–law, Allan and Tricia Cecil of Hartsville, Gregory D. Cecil of Houston, Texas; grandchildren and spouses, Jill C. and Brent Snyder of Hartsville, Sarah C. and Jason Gray of Charlotte, N.C., Molly C. and Steve Peterson of Columbia; great–grandchildren, Hayden Snyder, James Gray and Pete Peterson.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Laymond B. Cecil.

LOTTIE DARGAN

Funeral services for Evangelist Lottie Dargan were held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, at Peace Tabernacle Baptist Church with the Rev. Ira Timmons Jr. officiating. Burial followed in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc.

Evangelist Dargan was born March 27, 1939, a daughter of the late Charlotte Player and Ed Ellerby. She attended the public schools of Darlington County and graduated from Butler High School.

She was first ordained as an evangelist at Joiner Temple in Charleston. She was ordained a second time by the Rev. Ira Timmons Jr. of New Testament Baptist Church. She was employed at the Darlington County Department of Social Services with 28 years of service.

Evangelist Dargan's love of God and her service to the people of the Pee Dee area of South Carolina will be remembered for years to come. Her smile and wit will be missed by family and friends alike.

Surviving to cherish her loving memory are two sons, Joshua Harkless Jr. of Greenville and Jonathan Matthew (Leola) Harkless of Murrietta, Calif.; one daughter, Susie (William) Parrott of Charlotte, N.C.; seven grandchildren, James Harkless, Jennifer Harkless, William Michael Parrott, Robin Nicole Parrott, Crystal Harkless, Gervon Johnson and Jason Harkless; a very special niece, Patricia Byrd; two great–grandchildren; four step–children, Pierre Anderson, Yvonnegamaria Anderson, Daniela Anderson and Blessed Anderson; a host of nephews, nieces and cousins; many adopted family members and very dear friends.

'WOODY' BLACKMAN

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Walter Woody Blackman Sr., 87, were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, at Mechanicsville Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Blackman, of the Mechanicsville Community, died Thursday, Aug. 19, at his home. He was born in Darlington County, son of the late James R. and Bessie Abbott Blackman. He served his country with the United States Navy, had worked with the railroad and was a farmer. Mr. Blackman was a lifetime member of Woodstone Hunting Club and Upper Pee Dee Hunting Club. He was a member of the Mechanicsville Coots Men's Club and was a member of Mechanicsville Baptist Church, where he was deacon emeritus, treasurer for 46 years and was known as the official Candy Man of Mechanicsville Baptist Church.

Mr. Blackman was an avid fisherman, and in his later years was able to continue thanks to the kindness and help of Mr. Gene Calcutt.

Surviving are his wife, Dot Smith Blackman of Mechanicsville; two sons, Walter W. Woodrow (Gloria) Blackman and Jimmy (Lanette) Blackman, also of Mechanicsville; daughter, Penny (Ted) Kelley of Hartwell, Ga.; grandchildren, Walter Blackman III, Denise B. Boyd, Stacy Blackman, Kate K. Tollison, John Kelley, Amy K. Thornton, Michelle B. Harrell, Becky B. Hicks and Rachel B. Webster; 10 great–grandchildren; brother, Howard (Marilyn) Blackmon of Mechanicsville.

Mr. Blackman was preceded in death by his brothers, Marion Buddy Blackman and Edward Blackman, and a sister, Marie Warr.

Memorials are suggested to Mechanicsville Baptist Church, 2364 Cashua Ferry Road, Darlington, SC 29540 and Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves Street, Florence, SC 29506.

CLEVELAND BACKUS JR.

Funeral services for Cleveland Backus Jr. will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, at Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel with Elder Hezekiah Davis officiating. Burial followed in Greenlawn cemetery directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Hartsville.

Mr. Backus died on Saturday, Aug. 14, after an illness. He was born Dec. 25, 1940, in Darlington County, a son of the late Cleveland Sr. and Molly Ketter Backus. He was educated in the public schools of the county and attended Rosenwald High School.

Mr. Backus was a member of New Hopewell Baptist Church. One of his sisters, Gloria Jean Backus preceded him in death.

He was loved by family and friends and those left behind will surely miss his kindness.

Surviving to cherish his memory are one son, Allan Backus of Wallace; four daughters, Dorothy Backus of Norwalk, Conn., Helen Robinson of Wallace, Barbara (Solomon) Belin and Patricia Jackson, both of Hartsville; six brothers Bryant Backus and Clarence Backus, both of Philadelphia, Pa., Sherman Backus of New Haven Conn., Roosevelt Gattison of Hartsville, Nelson Gattison of Lake City and Lucious Gattison of New Haven, Conn.; six sisters, Mary Alice Backus of Florence, Charlena Wilson of Hartsville, Dorothy Smith, Mary Hall and Lizzie McKay, all of New Haven, Conn., and Maggie Ings of Ansonia, Conn.; eight grandchildren, other relatives and very dear friends.

NITA M. MORRISON

Funeral services for Nita Marie Truett Morrison, 85, will be held Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at New Market United Methodist Church with the Revs. Larry Brown, Phillip Watry, Ben and Dora Gafford officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be tonight from 6–8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Morrison, widow of James Carson Morrison Sr., passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 25, at her home, surrounded by her family. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late James Weldon and Sally T. O'Neal Truett. She was a member of New Market United Methodist Church and a member of the Ladies Fellowship Class.

Surviving are two daughters, Jerry Stewart (Charles) Dalton of Hartsville and Betty (George) Leeder of Swainsboro, Ga.; three sons, Bud (Ella) Morrison of Dalton, Ga., James (Phyllis) Morrison of Anderson and Faye Morrison of Hartsville; and two sisters, Maybelle Anderson and Agnes Thompson of Hartsville; 12 grandchildren; two step–grandchildren and 11 great–grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Tommy Morrison; sisters, Fannie Marshall, Daisy King and Annie Gainey; brothers, Luke and Buddy Truett.

Memorials may be made to the McLeod Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506 or New Market United Methodist Church, 1909 W. Old Camden Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550.

J. W. ATKINSON JR.

Funeral services for James Walker J.W. Atkinson Jr., 57, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Aug. 27, 2004, in the Stoudenmire–Dowling Funeral Home Chapel in Florence. Burial will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Atkinson died Sunday, Aug. 22, in WaKeeney, Kan., after a brief illness. He was born in Hartsville. He was a member of the Hartsville Moose Lodge and attended Vision Assembly in Darlington. He was an owner and operator of Atkinson Brothers Trucking Co.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Walker Atkinson Sr., who died in 1980; by a daughter, Kathy Lou Atkinson, who died in 1987, and by a brother, Mitch Atkinson, who died in 1986.

Surviving are one daughter, Kim Atkinson of Hartsville; one son, Timothy (Janet) Atkinson of Darlington; his mother, Dorothy Atkinson Freeman of Hartsville; his step–father, Alston Freeman of Hartsville; four grandchildren; four great–grandchildren; six brothers, Charlie Atkinson of Cheraw, Billy Atkinson of Hartsville, Randy (Pat) Atkinson, Mac (Mildred) Atkinson, Ralph (Vonnie) Atkinson and Roger Atkinson, all of Effingham; three sisters, Jewel (Robert) Cagle and Ann (Vernon) Harris, both of Effingham, and Marilyn (Gordon) Pendell of Florence; and his former wives, Patricia Ann Dixon and Sandra Atkinson, both of Darlington.

Memorials may be made to the Hartsville Church of God of Prophecy, 1133 North Fifth St., Hartsville, SC 29550.
