DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Leo Jackson, 48, will be held at 1 p.m. today, Aug. 27, 2004, at New Providence Baptist Church with the Rev. K.C. Brown, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Hoodfield cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home Inc.
Mr. Jackson died Tuesday, Aug. 24, at his residence after a sudden illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Leo and Mozell Lunn Jackson. He was a graduate of St. John's High School Class of 1974. He was a member of New Providence Baptist Church where he served on the Usher Board. He was employed for 28 years at Georgia Pacific Corp./Dixie Products.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Robinson Jackson of the home; a daughter, Antron (Robert) Pearson of Germany; two sons, Derrick (Robin) Jackson and Sharnard Jackson, both of Darlington; three step–sons, Sylvester (Karen) Robinson of Camden, Corey Robinson of Hartsville and Timothy Robinson of Benedict College in Columbia; a brother, Alphonso (Betty) Jackson of Darlington; four sisters, Mary (Willie) Jeffery, Margaret (Frank deceased) Lowe, Theola (Marcus) Samuel, all of Darlington, and Gladys Jozell Jackson of Syracuse, N.Y.; 16 grandchildren; an aunt, Mrs. Miss Jackson–Harrison of Syracuse, N.Y.; two special sisters, Charlie Mae (Johnny) Dewitt and Minnie Carter; 11 sisters–in–law; two brothers–in–law; nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family is receiving friends at the residence.
CEDRIC D. HAMMOND
BETHUNE — Funeral services for Cedric DeShaun Hammond, 21, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at Mill Creek Baptist Church in Bethune. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Hammond died Monday, Aug. 23. He was born in Camden, a son of Jack C. and Barbara Bracey Hammond. He was a graduate of North Central High School and was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving, other than his parents of Bethune, are two sisters, Beverly Alicia Hammond of Maryland and Lisa Edwards of Darlington; two brothers, Christopher Demayne Hammonds of Hudson, N.Y., and Tim (Toja) Woods of Bethune; maternal grandparents, Wilma Bracey of Bethune and Samuel Bracey of Angior, N.C.; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
LOUISE SPIVEY
FLORENCE — Funeral services for Carol Louise Bryant Spivey, 77, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Aug. 27, 2004, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home, with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery.
Mrs. Spivey died Tuesday, Aug. 24, in a local hospital. She was born in Green Sea, daughter of the late William Penn and Jane Weavel Bryant. She graduated from Carro Gordo High School. Mrs. Spivey worked for Peebles in Florence and loved flowers and sewing. She was very devoted to her family. She was a member of Greenwood Baptist Church and the Ruth Garrett Sunday School Class.
Surviving are her husband, Victor Spivey of Florence; two sons, Victor Carroll Spivey and Patrick B. (Judy) Spivey, all of Darlington; two daughters, Linda S. (J.T.) DuRant of Florence and Venita (Chafee) Jones of Darlington; six grandchildren, Shannon (Dawn) Spivey, Brock (Carolyn) Spivey, Chad Jones, Wendy (Les) Crowley, Crystal (Jamie) Stanley and Travis Durant; three great–grandchildren, Sierra Jones, Beck Spivey and Christian Crowley; three sisters, Martha Fycyk of Pennsylvania, Loretta Johnson of Virginia Beach, Va., and Mona Faye Watkins of Raleigh, N.C.
Mrs. Spivey was preceded in death by two brothers, William Penn Bryant and Evans Bryant.

FRED S. 'BLUE' MYERS
Funeral services for Fred Samuel Blue Myers were held on Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, at 4 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. A.L. Smiling officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc.
Mr. Myers was born Feb. 15, 1936, in Darlington County, a son of the late Lorine Phillips and Fortesque Wright. He was educated in the public schools of the county. He later joined the United States Army and continued his education there. He received his GED while in the Armed Forces. After leaving the military in 1969, he moved to Arlington, Va. and began working for the United States Postal Service.
He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church for a number of years until his illness prevented him from attending regularly. He was a good friend to many in his own quiet and unassuming way. His presence from among us will surely be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Surviving to cherish his wonderful memory are three daughters, Colee (Robert) Covington of Lancaster, Mary Myers of Baxley, Ga., and Leshia (Thaddeus) Nails of McBee; one son, Frederick Larry of Bronx, N.Y.; a step–son, Gene Smith of Baxley, Ga.; three brothers, Henry (Dorothy) Wright of Starkard, Va., Ben (Paula) Wright of Sterling, Va., and Bobby (Vilma) Wright of Merrifield, Va.; five sisters, Selena (Lee) Easley of Alexandria, Va., sisters, Elder Rebecca Phillips of Hartsville, Regina Toney and Elder Shelby P. Little both of Paterson, N.J., and Susie Phillips of Queens, N.Y.; an aunt, Maggie Humphrey of McBee; a special friend and cousin, Carlissie Les Williams of Hartsville; eight grandchildren and eight great–grandchildren.
HERBERT McALLISTER
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Herbert McAllister, formerly of Florence died Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, in a New York hospital after an illness. Local arrangements are being handled by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Hartsville. He is the brother of Herman, John and Al McAllister, all of Florence.
BILLY CHAPMAN
Funeral services for Billy Ray Chapman, 29, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004, at Chapel Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Grover Johnson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Chapel Hill Baptist Church, 1569 Ruby Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mr. Chapman died Saturday, Aug 21. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of Larry Chapman and Lucille Johnson Chapman. He was a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church where he loved singing with the Youth Choir and going on mission trips. He was a fan of NASCAR racing but more especially he was the biggest fan of Jeff Gordon. Billy had a love for country and gospel music, watching baseball and football games, and he loved meeting and seeing people at Wal–Mart.
Surviving are his mother, of Hartsville; father, of Lexington; sisters and brother–in–law, Misty C. and Todd Horton of Hartsville, Renee C. Derr of Hartsville; brother and sister–in–law, Todd and Annette Chapman of Pageland; grandfather, James Boot Shoemate of Hartsville.
TOM ODOM
Graveside services for William Thomas Tom Odom, 86, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004, at Darlington Memory Gardens with the Revs. Mike Gunter of Longview Church of God (Vinemont, Ala.) and David Hellmig of the First Church of God Reformation (Hartsville) officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Church of God Reformation, 1823 Kelleytown Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mr. Odom, widower of Dorothy Mae Knotts, died Sunday, Aug. 22. Born in the Highhill community of Darlington County, he was the eighth child of the late William Thomas and Mary M. Johnson Odom. He was a farmer, dairyman and Coca–Cola salesman in Darlington and Hartsville with 32 years of service.
Surviving are his son and daughter–in–law, Phillip and Dr. Sara Odom of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Dot and William Jones of Hartsville; grandchildren and spouses, Tommie Lynn and Mitchell Smothers of Hartsville, Angela and Joey Dority of Hartsville, Beth and Danny Ivey of Florence, Susan and Fred Melton of Hartsville, Bill and Dr. Melissa Jones of El Mirage, Ariz., Marshall Odom of Hendersonville, N.C., Drs. Billy and Sara Odom of Columbia, Majors David and Michelle Odom of Fredericksburg, Va., Marla and the Rev. Dr. Jon Payne of Douglasville, Ga.; 14 great–grandchildren and one great–great–grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years and his son, Tommy Odom.

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH — Memorial services for Ida Marian Bell, 84, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at Mt. Elon Baptist Church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service. Memorials may be made to the Mt. Elon Baptist Church cemetery Fund, PO Box 38, Lydia, SC 29079.
Ms. Bell died Monday, Aug. 16. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Ernest Bell Sr. and Annie Sue Arnold Bell. Miss Bell was an active participant and sports enthusiast and was graduated from Limestone College in Gaffney. She taught 28 years in the public school system in Spartanburg, S.C., and Charlotte, N.C., where her students affectionately referred to her as Ma Bell. She made her home at North Myrtle Beach, where she was a member of Ocean Drive Baptist Church.
Surviving are her sister, Miriam Bell Forsythe of Montgomery, Ala.; brothers and sister–in–law, Thomas Ernest Bell Jr. and Mary Cotton Bell of Orangeburg, Kenneth R. Bell of Clemson; six nieces and six nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Jean Bell Oates.
GERALDINE BARFIELD
Funeral services for Geraldine Miss Geraldine Outlaw Barfield, 84, were held at 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, at Kelleytown Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary Anderson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Kelleytown Baptist Church Library Fund, 2609 Kelleytown Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mrs. Barfield, widow of John Woodrow Barfield, died Saturday, Aug. 21. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Murray and Bessie Lynch Outlaw. Geraldine and Woodrow were married
in 1939 and shared 53 years together. She was employed for many years at the Milliken Mill and was a longtime member of Kelleytown Baptist Church.
Her home was a gathering place for her children, grandchildren and great–grandchildren. She greeted everyone with a positive and welcoming nature, and there was always a cold glass of tea and a biscuit to share. The kitchen table will be crowded today as her family celebrates her life.
Surviving are her sons and daughter–in–law, Woody C. and Marjorie Barfield of Hartsville, Johnny W. Barfield of North Myrtle Beach, B. Steve Barfield of White Plains, Ga.; sister, Madie O. Spencer of Hartsville; 10 grandchildren who lovingly knew her as Mimi and 18 great–grandchildren who were the joy of her later years.
PRESTON NOLAN
SOCIETY HILL — Funeral services for Preston Nolan, 85, were held at 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, at Welsh Neck Baptist Church conducted by the Revs. Tom Rutan and Neal Nolan. Interment followed in the Nolan Family cemetery, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington.
Mr. Nolan was born in Marlboro County, the son of the late Lonnie and Glennie Leviner Nolan. He was a member of Welsh Neck Baptist Church. He owned and operated Nolan Timber Corp. for more than 50 years and was the CEO emeritus at the time of his death. Mr. Nolan was a farmer and an avid gardener.
Mr. Nolan was predeceased by his wife, Winnie Mae Hardee Nolan, who died in 1995, and an infant daughter, Glennie Annette Nolan, and one granddaughter, Ann Cherie Fulmer.
Mr. Nolan is survived by one son, Robert Preston (Billie) Nolan of Society Hill; two daughters, Edna Nolan (Leon) Chapman of Society Hill and Betty Nolan (Marion Douglas) Peacock of Blenheim; two adopted sons, Edgar F. (Betty) Smith of Michigan and Frank M. (Linda) Kelly of Society Hill; three brothers, Lawson P. (Jane) Nolan, Julian (Peggy) Nolan, both of Society Hill, and Jasper (Janet) Nolan of Bath, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Robert F. (Lisa) Nolan, Neal Preston (Kim) Nolan and Ernest Brandon Nolan, all of Society Hill, Kim Chapman (Shafter) Johnston of Myrtle Beach, Stacie Chapman (Mike) Reed of Lafayette, La., Dale Peacock (Carl) Freeman of Blenheim, Betty Carol Peacock of Florence, Sabrina (Eddie) Packet of Hartsville, Steve (Dawn) Peacock of Latta and 14 great–grandchildren.

WILLIAM E. SHOEMAKE
PATRICK — Funeral services for William Edward Shoemake, 59, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, at St. John Free Will Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Miller–Rivers–Caulder Funeral Home of Chesterfield.
Mr. Shoemake died Friday, Aug. 20. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Lonnie Edward and Edith Juanita Talbert Shoemake. He was a retired heavy equipment operator and a member of St. John Free Will Baptist Church. Mr. Shoemake was married
to the late Shirley Jean Gainey Shoemake.
Survivors include his wife, Ginger; one son, Edward Dean Shoemake, both of Hartsville; two daughters, Tina Louise Smith of Hartsville and Brenda Lee (Steve) Winburn of Patrick; two step–daughters, Tammy (Ernest) Roscoe of Patrick and Deneene (Steven) Rivers of McBee; one brother, Laverne Shoemake of Patrick; two sisters, Tillie Scott and Reatha Roscoe of Patrick; four grandchildren; three step–grandchildren and one step–great–grandchild.
MESHIA L. SAMUEL
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Meshia Lavette Samuel, 17, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, in Darlington High School Gymnasium with Pastor Annie Lou Williamson officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Rona Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Miss Samuel died Monday, Aug. 16. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of Judith D. Samuel and Michael Carraway. She was an honor graduate of Darlington High School, class of 2004, where she received various awards. She was starting college and living out her dream of becoming a doctor.
She was an active member of New Jerusalem Pentecostal Church, where she served as Sunday school secretary, pre–school teacher, youth choir coordinator and member of the Usher Board.
Survivors include her mother, Judith D. Samuel of the home; sisters, Hannah Samuel of the home and Portia Carraway of Columbia; brother, Michael Carraway Jr., and her father, Michael Carraway, both of Columbia; maternal grandparents Elderess Parnetha and Jerome McCall of Darlington; paternal grandparents, John and Carrie Carraway of Hartsville; maternal great–grandparents, Simon and Janie Johnson of Hilton Head; nine aunts; nine uncles; a host of grand and great–aunts and uncles; a host of other relatives and friends, Ebony Alford, Patricia White, Terry Jackson and Gail Bridges.

BETHUNE — Cedric Hammond, 21, died Monday, Aug. 23, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.
The family will receive friend at 3121 Young Bridge Road, Bethune.
