Funeral services for Thomas Laverne Tommy Shumate Sr., 63, were held at 3 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, in the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home with the Revs. Burney C. Hinson and Don Childers officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery.
Mr. Shumate died Saturday, Aug. 21. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Johnny and Blanche Gainey Shumate. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co., a member Old Timers Club, was retired from the National Guard and was an Air Force veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Jo Ann Jacobs Shumate of Hartsville; a daughter, Tonya (Brent) Blackwell; son, Thomas L. Shumate Jr., both of Hartsville; two sisters, Minnie Louise Walters of Hartsville and Joyce Jacobs of Rockingham, N.C.; and grandchildren, Wes and Jacob Blackwell, both of Hartsville.

MYRTLE JOHNSON
Funeral services for Myrtle Gandy Johnson, 87, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, at North Hartsville Baptist Church with the Rev. Ladell Humphries, Dr. Richard Bailey and the Rev. Grover Johnson officiating. Burial followed in Westview Memorial Park cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Johnson, widow of John A. Johnson, died Friday, Aug. 20. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Roxie Morrell Gandy. She was a member of North Hartsville Baptist Church and the Willing Workers Sunday school class. She worked for Hartsville Print & Dye Works and retired after many years from Galey & Lord. She was a dedicated mother and Christian, and she served her Lord well.
Surviving are her daughters and sons–in–law, Jackie J. and Paul Teal of Hartsville, Johnnie J. and Jessee Parker of Hartsville; daughter–in–law, Mary Johnson of Hartsville; 11 grandchildren and 20 great–grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son Gene Autry Johnson; daughter, Peggy Byrd; brothers, Colon Gandy, Coit Gandy, Festus Gandy and Taft Gandy.
ETHEL J. MIXON
Funeral services for Ethel Mae Johnson Mixon, 71, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, at Prospect United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Pat Orr officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Prospect United Methodist Church, 2236 Bethlehem Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mrs. Mixon, widow of Harry J. Mixon Sr., died Friday, Aug. 20. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Roy and Leda Bell Griggs Johnson. She was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her daughters and sons–in–law, Joyce and James H. Sullivan Jr. of Hartsville, Renee and Ron Johnson of Hartsville; sister, Mary Emily Nash of Hartsville; grandchildren, Mitch Sullivan, Robert Sullivan, Laura Sullivan, Tasha Johnson; four great–grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her sons, Harry Mixon Jr. and David Mixon, and sister, Helen Rhodes.
EMILY SEGARS
Graveside services for Emily Fitchett Segars will be held at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 20, 2004, at Magnolia cemetery. The very Rev. Ted Duvall will officiate and Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. Memorials may be made to St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, 103 Campus Dr., Hartsville, SC 29550, or Converse College, 580 E. Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
Mrs. Segars, widow of Albert Segars, died Wednesday, Aug. 18. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Frank Edward and Emily Twitty Fitchett. She was a member of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. She graduated from Converse College and taught in the Hartsville elementary schools. She was a member of the Kalmia Garden Club, the Jacob Kelley House Guild and The Thursday Study Club.
Surviving are her sons and daughters–in–law, Dr. Al and Mary Grayson Segars of Beaufort, Kent and Kyle Haskett Segars of Hartsville; daughter, Mary Segars Nance of Hartsville; grandchildren, Luke Segars, Mac Segars and Gray Segars; brother, Ed Fitchett Jr.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Morningside Assisted Living and to her caregivers, Christine Fisher, Mary Wilson and Frances Soon.
LISA EVANS HOWELL
OATES — Funeral services for Lisa Evans Howell, 41, were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at Mt. Elon Baptist Church with the Revs. Marvin Lynch, Robin King and Dr. Bob Cline officiating. Burial the church cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Howell died Monday, Aug. 16. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of Frances Outlaw Williams and James Terrell Evans. She was employed with Progress Energy and was a member of Mt. Elon Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Martin Howell of Oates; sons, Johnathon Martin Howell and Darek William Howell, both of Oates; mother and step–father, Frances and Dewey Williams of Hartsville; father and step–mother, Jimmy and Thelma Evans of Hartsville; sister, Connie (Jeff) Smith of Hartsville.
Memorials may be made to the Hut Fund at Mt. Elon Baptist Church, PO Box 38, Lydia, S.C. 29079.
REV. CURTIS HENDERSON
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for the Rev. Curtis Henderson were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, in the Mitchell–Josey Funeral Chapel with the Rev. P. W. Williams officiating. Burial followed in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
The Rev. Henderson died Thursday, Aug. 12, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Queen City, Texas, a son of the late Melvin and Vada Henderson. He was educated in Queen City public schools. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged.
He lived in California and in 1978 moved to Darlington, where he was an independent carrier for the Morning News of Florence for 21 years.
Survivors include his wife, Georgia Mae Henderson of Oakland, Calif.; six children, Jerome Henderson, Danny Henderson, both of Oakland, Calif., Ronald Henderson of Heyward, Calif., Jocquelin Tallie of Vallejo, Calif., Vickie Dorrough of Tacoma, Wash., and Arsovina McBride of Stone Mountain, Ga.; four sisters, Arsavina King of Nipoma, Calif., Moise Lee Neal of Queen City, Texas, Merlene Kincaid of St. Louis, Mo., and Ruby Van Hook of Stockton, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; 10 great–grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Three children, five brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
LINDBERG PRICE
Funeral services for Lindberg Price were held on Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at 4 p.m. at Mt. Calvary AME Church in Hartsville. Burial followed in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. Rev. Willie F. Graves officiated.
Mr. Price died on Monday, Aug. 9. He was born Dec. 6, 1934, in Lee County, South Carolina, a son of the late Raymond and Elease Price. He was educated in the public schools of Lee County. Early in life, he moved to Darlington County and worked at R.H. Boujlingny Inc. for 34 years. He first joined Sandy Bluff United Methodist Church and later became a member of Mt. Calvary AME Church.
His presence will surely be missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by a son, Jerome Jerry Price, a sister, Blonde Taylor, and by two brothers, Charles Price and Roosevelt Price.
Surviving to cherish his wonderful memory include his devoted wife Thelma Price of Hartsville; two sons, Johnny (Ethel) Price of Hartsville and Freddie (Millie) Price of Cheverly, Md.; two daughters, Sharon Price and Shakeena Price, both of Hartsville; two sisters, Catherine (Foster) Fox of Darlington and Mary (Eddie) Thomas of Hartsville; three brothers, Julious (Almeta) Price, Henry (Mary Lou) Price and Raymond Price, all of Hartsville; two special sisters–in–law, Lee Newman and Dorothy Price, both of Hartsville; one aunt, Nell Price of Bishopville; nine grandchildren and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and other close relatives and very dear friends.
ELIZABETH BELL
LAMAR — Funeral services for Elizabeth Coulliette Bell, 93, were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at Lamar United Methodist Church with graveside services following at 5 p.m. in Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery near Summerton, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Bell died Thursday, Aug. 12. She was born in Clarendon County, daughter of the late George Howe and Ethel Richbourg Coulliette. She was married
to the late Rev. E. P. Bell. She was a graduate of Draughn's Business College. Mrs. Bell, a loving wife and mother, worked for 16 years for the federal government in Manning and Washington, D.C.
Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Perry and Susan Bell of Lamar; daughters and sons–in–law, Sara and Dick Esslinger of Fredericksburg, Va., and Coulliette and Harold Hagglund of Newberg, Ore.; five grandchildren, Christopher and Amy Bell of Lamar, Bryant Bell of Lamar, Ryan and Maki Hagglund of Yamagata City, Japan, Heidi Hagglund of Chicago, Ill., And Joel Esslinger, of Fredericksburg, Va.; one great grandchild, Brent Bell of Lamar; a brother, Charles (Faye) Coulliette of Pinewood and sister Marisue Blackwood of Corpus Christi, Texas.
JACK RUSSELL
McBEE — Funeral services for Jack Leland Russell, 40, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at Union United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roger Dodds officiating with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mr. Russell died Saturday, Aug. 14. Born in Tacoma, Wash., he was a son of Joel Nathaniel and Shelby Jean Selph Russell. He was a loving husband, father and brother.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy Johnson Russell of McBee; daughter, Amber Russell of McBee; sisters, Joanne Hopkins of Manning, Jill Russell of Columbia, Sandy Noonan of Columbia; brothers, Billy Russell of McBee, Joel N. Russell Jr. of Columbia; 26 nieces and nephews; three great–nieces and two great–nephews.
MARTHA H. EDWARDS
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Martha Harrison Edwards, 92, were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, in Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. D. L. Hughes, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Shiloh United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mrs. Edwards died Friday, Aug. 6, in a local hospital after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Dave and Olivia Anderson Harrison. She was the widow of Governor Edwards.
She received her formal education in the Darlington County public schools. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Gerald Bunk (Linda) Edwards and Ernest Bo Edwards, both of Darlington; a daughter, Ann Reynolds of Connecticut; nine grandchildren; 16 great–grandchildren; seven great–great–grandchildren, in–laws, and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son and daughter as infants; brothers and sisters, Olivia Law, Ed, Mary Alice and Mary Louise Harrison and a grandson, Terry Reynolds.
JAMES D. MILLEN SR.
Graveside services for James Dennis Millen Sr., 74, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 18, 2004, at Magnolia cemetery. Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. Memorials may be made to the Kidney Foundation, 500 Taylor St., Suite 101, Columbia, SC 29201.
Mr. Millen died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004. Born in Tabor City, N.C., he was a son of the late H.D. and Dorothy Segars Millen. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co. with 38 years of service and was a member of the Old Timers Club. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Hartsville Masonic Lodge No. 173.
Surviving are his wife, Jewel Ingram Millen of Hartsville; sons and daughters–in–law, James D. and Carol Millen of Raleigh, N.C., David B. and Wendy Millen of Hartsville; daughter, Jane I. Millen of Murrells Inlet; sisters and brother–in–law, Michal and Richard Baird of Society Hill and Glenda M. Terrell of Hartsville; brother and sister–in–law, Fred S. and Jo Ann Millen of Dovesville; grandchildren, Meredith Millen, Meagan Millen, Margaret Millen, Ann Millen, Scott Millen.
REGINALD HUNEYCUTT
Funeral services for Reginald Reggie Huneycutt, 54, who died Aug. 16, 2004, will be held today, Aug. 18, at 4 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church. The Revs. David Surrett, Danny Pierce and Tommy Browne will officiate. Burial will be in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Reggie was born in Monroe, N.C., a son of Mary Florence Stogner Huneycutt and the late Rev. L.A. Huneycutt. He was a member of West Hartsville Baptist Church, employed with Clanton's Auto Auction, pianist at Wesley United Methodist Church and Cornerstone Baptist Church, member of the DAV Hartsville No. 47, attended the University of South Carolina and was a graduate of Coker College and a veteran of the Vietnam War.
Surviving are his son and daughter–in–law, Jeff and Crystal Huneycutt of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Amy and James David Lindler of Irmo; granddaughter, Andrea Huneycutt of Hartsville; sister, Mary Griggs Sullivan of Hartsville; brother and sister–in–law, the Rev. W.D. and Shirley Huneycutt of Hartsville; nieces, Letitia Ward of Columbia, Phyllis Griggs of Hartsville, Connie Hancock and Susan Huggins of Chesterfield and Linda Taylor of Fayetteville, N.C.
SARAH PRIEST
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Graveside services for Sarah Jernigan Priest, 74, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at Mount Horeb Presbyterian Church cemetery with pastor James Bartlett, CLP, officiating.
Mrs. Priest died Tuesday, Aug. 10, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Julian H. Priest. She was a longtime member of White Plains Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon and an elder.
Survivors include a daughter, Gwenda L. Priest and husband, Jim Lustig, of Greensboro, N.C.; a son, Donald Allen Priest and wife, Tammy, of Hartsville; two nieces, Laurie and Toni Jernigan of Newport News, Va.
