Funeral services for Verlie Weatherford Hodge, 89, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Aug. 18, 2004, at New Providence Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Kenny Lynch will officiate with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hodge, widow of Joe D. Hodge, died Sunday, Aug. 15. Born in Hartsville, she was a daughter of the late William Sanford and Leila Gainey Weatherford. She was a loving mother and grandmother.
Surviving are her sons and daughter–in–law, Billy Joe and Linda Hodge, George E. Hodge, all of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Amaryllis and O.P. Scoggins of Ruffin; 28 grandchildren; 35 great–grandchildren; numerous great–great–grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her sons, David L. Hodge, Franklin D. Hodge, John Everette Hodge; daughter, Shelby Jean Hodge; step–sons, Elliott Hodge and Edward Hodge.
JOSEPHINE C. HILL
BLENHEIM — Services for Josephine Coxe Hill, 74, were held at 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at Brownsville Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Whitner–Evans Funeral Home of Bennettsville. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Marlboro County, PO Box 474, Bennettsville, SC 29512.
Mrs. Hill died Friday, Aug. 13. Born in Marlboro County, she was a daughter of the late Ellen B. Coxe. She was retired from Oak River Mills and was a member of Brownsville Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Mitchell Coxe of Hartsville; a daughter, Mrs. Shirley Coxe Jackson of Bennettsville; four grandchildren and f our great–grandchildren.
COURTNEY STEWART
Funeral services for Courtney Stewart, 47, were held on Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at 3 p.m. at the Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel with Elder Christine Moses officiating. Burial followed in Plaza Memorial Gardens in Lamar, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc.
Mr. Stewart was born Nov. 14, 1956, in Tubeville, a son of Elsie Stewart and the late Roosevelt Stewart. He departed this life on Sunday, Aug. 8, at Tuomey Hospital in Sumter after a long illness.
He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He gave his life to Christ nine years ago and was a member of Faith Unity Church. He was a faithful and dedicated member of his church. One of his brothers, Jacob Stewart, preceded him in death.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his mother, Elsie Stewart of Bishopville; a brother, Tony Stewart of Sumter; six sisters, Bessie (David) Sams of Bishopville, Wessie (Jack) Johnson of Dalzell, Rosa (Marion) Marshall, Cynthia (Basil) Douglas and Loretta (Monte) Clark all of Paterson, N.J., and Gloria Stewart of Charlotte, N.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, other relatives and very special friends.
LIDA DuBOSE
FLORENCE — Graveside services for Lida Newsome DuBose, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, in Mount Hope cemetery, directed by Stoudemire–Dowling Funeral Home.
Mrs. DuBose died Sunday morning, Aug. 15, at her residence after an illness. She was born in Hartsville, a daughter of the late George Bennett and Dannie Kelly Newsom. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church, a member of the Joy Anderson Circle and a member of the Wisteria Garden Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Brockington DuBose, who died in 1983.
Surviving are two daughters, Sara DuBose (Laurie H.) Barefoot and Glenda DuBose (James E.) McLeod, all of Florence; grandchildren, Sandra B. Willis, Libby M. Davis and Walter H. Barefoot, all of Florence, Suzanne M. Mozingo of Myrtle Beach and Becky M. Windham of Lake City; great–grandchildren, Amanda Davis, Lauren Willis, Dawson Windham, James Dean Windham, Joshua Barefoot and Lydia Barefoot; and two sisters, Ruth N. Parrott and Vada N. Gore, both of Hartsville.
Memorials may be made to the Central United Methodist Church, 225 W. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29501.
LOTTIE M. DARGAN
Lottie M. Dargan died on Monday, Aug. 16th 2004 at her residence. The family will receive friends at the residence at 708 Chaplin Circle, Hartsville. Arrangements are i ncomplete and will be announced by Hines Funeral Home.
EVENNIA 'JOE' HEATLEY
Funeral services for Evennia Joe Heatley will be held on Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at 1 p.m. at the Gilbert Hines Hines Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth L. Nelson officiating. Burial will follow in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Hartsville.
Evennia Heatley was born Dec. 21, 1937, a son of the late Joseph and Rosa Lee Patterson Heatley. He attended the Darlington County public schools and graduated from Butler High School in 1958. After graduation from high school, Joe as he was known by most of his family and friends, moved to New York where he worked several jobs. He then joined the United States Army and served during the Vietnam War. After being honorably discharged, he began his employment at the New York Transit Authority. He worked there for several years before his health failed and he was forced into early retirement. He moved back to Hartsville in the late 1980s and cared for his mother until her death.
Joe was a devoted friend to many and loved to fish and bowl. His presence from among us will surely be missed. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and also by a sister, Ada Heatley McPherson.
Surviving to cherish his wonderful memory are his daughter, Chaneava Denise Watson; his son, Iran Evennia Daise; two brothers, Willie Earl Bartley and Melvin Bartley; his grandchildren, Zarnell Heatley–Watson, Zaleshia Watson and Z'mira Watson; his niece, Brenda McPherson; his nephew, Julius McPherson; his great–niece, April McPherson; his great–nephew, Julius McPherson III; his brother–in–law, Julius McPherson II; and a host of other close relatives and very dear friends.
ADA M. CARRAWAY
LAMAR — Funeral services for Ada Margaret Carraway will be held today, Aug. 13, 2004, in Emanuel Community Church, Lamar, with the Revs. Tory White, pastor, and Eddie Ray Graham officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Ms. Carraway died Saturday, Aug. 7, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Flowers and Marvel Mack Carraway.
Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Margaret Carraway of Lamar; a sister, Mrs. Bernetha Alexander of Darlington; three grandchildren and three great–grandchildren.
The family is receiving friends at the home of her daughter at 111 Plummer Ave., Lamar.
WAYNE SMITH
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Ronnie Dewayne Wayne Smith, 34, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 13, 2004, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Smith departed this life on Tuesday, Aug. 10, at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia due to injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. He was born in Darlington County, son of Ronnie Smith and the late Linda Lloyd Smith. He was employed by Modern Maintenance and was an avid fisherman. He was a member of Landmark Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his father are his step–mother, Regina Smith of Cheraw; a son, Ronnie Dewayne Smith Jr. of Sumter; two sisters, Marcie (Joey) Blackwell and Linda Faye Smith, all of Darlington; two step–brothers, Brandon Lee Hunt and Jonathon Adam Hunt, both of Cheraw; a step–sister, Samantha Victoria Hunt of Cheraw; two special aunts, Frankie Smith and Joyce Garrison; five nieces and nephews and his fianc -, Debra Wadlington, as well as a host of friends, relatives and co–workers.
JOANNE A. GODWIN
DARLINGTON — A memorial service for Eleanor Joanna Arnold Godwin, 48, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at Eastside Christian Church in Florence, conducted by the Rev. Harvey Woods and directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.
Mrs. Godwin died Tuesday, Aug. 10, at her home after an illness. She was born in Arlington, Va., and was the daughter of Eleanor Broce Mays and the late William James Arnold. She was a member of Paperville United Methodist Church in Briston, Tenn. Joanne was an honest, spirited and independent lady who loved people. Some of her favorite activities included painting, gardening and cooking. She also enjoyed scuba diving and fishing.
Survivors include her mother, Eleanor Mays of Florence; a son, William James (Dawn) Arnold III of Lakeland, Fla; a brother, Phillip Mark (Renee) Arnold of Florence; a sister, Sally Elizabeth (George) Burnett of Spartanburg; and a dear friend, David Grainger and his daughter, Lauren, both of Darlington.
The family will receive friends at the church following the memorial service.

WESLEY P. WOODHAM
Funeral services for Wesley P. Woodham will be held on Saturday, Aug. 18, 2004, at 10 a.m. at St. John United Methodist Church in the Oates Community with the Rev. Frederick Yebuah officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc of Hartsville.
Mr. Woodham died Tuesday, Aug. 10. He was born May 11, 1927, in Darlington County, a son of the late Wesley and Rosa Lee Arthur Woodham. He attended the public schools of the county and graduated from Butler High School in 1946. He continued his education at area trade school in Denmark, S.C. He was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Army, 101st Paratrooper Corps. This was the first black paratrooper unit formed by the United States Army. On March 23, 1951, Wesley was married
to Elizabeth Jackson, and this union was blessed with one son.
After serving in the Armed Forces, he returned to Hartsville and formed Woodham Masonry Company, which he successfully operated for more than 50 years. During this time, he completed masonry construction for many private homes and public buildings in the Pee Dee region of South Carolina.
Mr. Woodham was a lifelong member of St. John United Methodist Church where he served faithfully in many capacities. He chaired the administrative board, was a member of the trustee board, was superintendent of the Sunday School, taught the adult Sunday school class and was a member of the senior choir. He was also a past Worshipful Master of the Myrtle Lodge No. 64 of Hartsville, a member of the Ashland Consistory and the Crescent Temple Shriners No. 148.
Wesley had a love for people, a fun–loving nature and a well–developed sense of humor. All this combined with a generous and giving heart. Family and friends alike will surely miss his presence from among us.
Surviving to cherish his wonderful memory include his devoted wife of 53 years, Elizabeth Woodham of Hartsville; a son, Michael (Lisa) Woodham of Florence; a goddaughter, Suzette Jackson of Hartsville; two brothers, James (Janie) Woodham of Hartsville and Henry Strawford (Minnie) Woodham of Lamar; a sister, Roberta (Jacob) Littles of Hartsville; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other close relatives and very dear friends.
JAMES O. BRITT
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for James O. Britt, 72, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Aug. 13, 2004, in the Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Allen Lynch. Burial will follow in Darlington Memory Gardens directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.
Mr. Britt died Tuesday, Aug. 10, in an Augusta, Ga., hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Lawrence Britt and Martha Hatchell Britt. He retired from American Can Co. after 24 years of service and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Mr. Britt was a recipient of the Purple Heart.
Surviving are his wife, Annie Hudson Britt of Darlington; two daughters, Teresa Britt Huddleston of Cookeville, Tenn., and Martha Britt (Jimmy) Drawdy of Lexington; three brothers, Richard (Agnes) Britt, Carl (Frances) Britt and Ernest (Geraldine) Britt, all of Darlington; one sister, Grace (Thomas) Weaver of Waycross, Ga.; three grandchildren, Russell Deas, James C. Jamie Drawdy III and Matthew Matt Drawdy; two great–grandchildren, Dakota Lane Drawdy and Kristi Kelly.
Active pallbearers will be Mike Britt, Al Britt, Rickie Britt, Randy Britt, Bruce Weatherford, Rickie Johnson, Jamie Drawdy, Matt Drawdy and Russ Deas.
Honorary pallbearer will be Red Harrell.

LIB EASTERLING
Funeral services for Elizabeth (Lib) Easterling Yarborough, 73, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at New Providence Baptist Church with the Rev. Todd Jefferies officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to New Providence Baptist Church, 1884 Antioch Road, Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mrs. Easterling died Saturday, Aug. 7. Born in Independence, Ky., she was a daughter of the late Morton and Margaret Rust Bowen. She was a member of New Providence Baptist Church, retired from Hartsville Manufacturing after 23 years and had many special friends.
She is survived by her husband, Bobby Yarborough of Hartsville; sons and daughter–in–law, Colon Ray and Virginia Easterling and Larry E. Easterling, all of Hartsville; daughters and son–in–law, Karen and Thomas Karetas of Myrtle Beach and Carol Brooks Atkinson of Hartsville; brother and sister–in–law, Perry and Terri Simpson of Independence, Ky.; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
