Funeral services for Robert Lighty, 78, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at Mt. Tema Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Lighty died Sunday, Aug. 8, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Tom and Leatha Benjamin Lighty. He received his education in the Darlington County public school system and was a member of Mt. Tema Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Pinkie Bristol Lighty of Hartsville; five children, Dwight (Helen) Lighty of Avondale, Ariz., Robert (Crandell) Lighty Jr., Brenda B. Montgomery, Rodney Ramsey, Stephanie Ramsey and a very special person, Ethel Mae Jackson, all of Hartsville; 24 grandchildren; 12 great–grandchildren; one sister, Jamie Mae Hough of Hartsville; three sisters–in–law, Vivian Moore and Lou Doris Jackson, both of Hartsville, and Alberta Bristo of McBee; two brothers–in–law, Boisey James Bristo and Major Hough, both of Hartsville; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
JAN McCONNELL
LAMAR — Graveside funeral services for Margaret Jan Lundy McConnell, 67, were held Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, in Lamar cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. McConnell died Friday, Aug. 6, at her residence. She was born in Sumter County, daughter of the late Harry M. and Margaret Segars Lundy. She was retired from General Electric and a member of Philadelphia Southern Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Raymond (Harriet) McConnell of the Philadelphia Community and Kenneth McConnell of Lamar; four grandchildren, Ryan Lee McConnell, Erin McConnell, Jason Oliver and Robin Oliver.
Mrs. McConnell was preceded in death by a daughter, Vickie Ann M. Oliver, and a sister, Ann McMullen.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.
CLYDE KING
Graveside services for Clyde Welborn King, 84, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at Magnolia cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Jeri Parris Perkins and the Rev. Canty DuBose officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 213 W. Home Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mr. King died Sunday, Aug. 8. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of the late Henry Warden and Maude King King. He served in the Philippines as a pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He served two and one half terms on the Hartsville City Council, was company commander of the Hartsville National Guard unit and was retired as a health care consultant for Puritan Chemical Company of Atlanta, Ga.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Vermelle Gressette King of Hartsville; son and daughter–in–law, Clyde W. and Bonnie King of Orlando, Fla.; daughter, Peggy King of Kalispell, Mont.; nieces and spouses, Sonya Charles of Charlotte, N.C., Ann and Ike Jones of Greensboro, N.C., Dottie and Joe Distelheim of Huntsville, Ala., Nancy Adams of Charlotte, N.C. He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Warden H. King, his brother, Pinckney A. King, and his sister, Betty King Adams.
LILLIE M. EVANS
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Lillie Mae McIver Evans will be held at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 11, 2004, at Friendship Baptist Church with the Rev. J. W. Kelly, emeritus, officiating. Burial will follow in Florence National cemetery, directed Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mrs. Evans died Thursday, Aug. 5, at her residence after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late John and Essie Jett McIver. She was the widow of Frances T. Evans. She received her formal education in the Darlington County public schools. She was a life member of Friendship Baptist Church.
For a number of years, she lived in the state of Connecticut, where she worked at Carlton Hospital as a nurse's aid. After she retired in the 1980s, she returned to Darlington.
Survivors include four children, Clyde (Lois) Smart, Melvin (Gloria) Smart, Freddie Evans, all of Bridgeport, Conn., Edna (Samuel) Harrison of Florence; a brother, Charles John McIver of Darlington; 24 grandchildren, one of which she reared as her own, Yolanda Smart; 14 great–grandchildren; a sister–in–law, Pellum Sims; a special friend, George Forsythe of Bridgeport, Conn.; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family is receiving friends at the residence at 126 Cross St., Darlington.
JAMES THOMAS SR.
Funeral services for James Thomas Sr., 69, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at Galilee Baptist Church. Burial followed in Pine Forest Memorial cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Thomas died Thursday, Aug. 5, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late J. D. Outen and Martha E. Thomas and was educated in the Chesterfield County public school system. He was a member of Galilee Baptist Church. He served in the United States Army for 21 years and upon retirement was employed with Mar Mac Wire Company for 21 years.
Surviving are his wife, Gladys Thomas of McBee; two daughters, Lakiechia Hoover of Charlotte, N.C., and Consuela E. Thomas of McBee; two sons, Fred (Stephanie) Morris of Charlotte, N.C., and James Edward Jr. of McBee; seven grandchildren; four sisters, Dorothy (William) Miller of Bethune, Creola Franklin of Charlotte, N.C., Mary Outen of Englewood, N.J., and Elizabeth (Artheola) Lassister of Benson, N.C.; four brothers, T. J. Thomas, Benny Outen and Lewis Outen, all of Charlotte, N.C., Frank Outen of Bethune; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
LINDBURG PRICE
Mr. Lindburg Price died on Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at his residence after an illness. The family will receive friends at the home of his son, Johnny Price, at 514 Pleasant View Drive, Hartsville. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home Inc.
MARY USHER
Funeral services for Mary Braddock Usher, 73, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Aug. 11, 2004, at Fourth Street Baptist Church. The Rev. Jack Epperly will officiate with burial in Norwood cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. -
Mrs. Usher, widow of Benjamin Franklin Usher, died Sunday, Aug. 8. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Lee and Frances Geneva Windham Braddock. She attended Fourth Street Baptist Church. She was Hartsville's first policewoman and the first woman to graduate from the Police Academy. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. -
Surviving are her sons and daughter–in–law, Bobby and Brenda Usher of Hartsville, Ben Usher Jr. of Hartsville; daughters, Debbie Wingo of Hartsville, Bessie Wingo of Bishopville; sisters and brothers–in–law, Betty and Olin Keith of Society Hill, Virginia and Shelton Yow of Nashville, Tenn.; brother and sister–in–law, Robert and Brenda Braddock of Hartsville; six grandchildren and one great–grandchild.
PURNIE ASHE
Funeral services for Purnie Nichols Ashe, 91, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at Gum Branch Baptist Church with the Revs. Jeff Gardner and Alan Carpenter officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Gum Branch Baptist Church, 1504 Clyde St., Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mrs. Ashe, widow of Ray John Ashe, died Sunday, Aug. 8. Born in Clay County, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Manuel Henry and Ila Owens Nichols. She was a member of Gum Branch Baptist Church and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. -
Surviving are her daughter, Roberta and Lorrie Kelly of Hartsville; grandchildren, Kim (Cindy) Stevenson of Hartsville, Jan Stevenson of Atlanta, Ga., Nick (Charlene) Stevenson of Charleston; great–grandchildren, Crystal Stevenson, Douglas Stevenson and Ethan Flowe. -
JANELLE B. SINNETT
LAMAR — Funeral services for Janelle Beasley Sinnett, 67, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at Lamar United Methodist Church with interment following in Lamar cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Sinnett died Friday, Aug. 6, at her residence in Columbia. She was born in Lamar, daughter of the late Gerald and Thelma Joye Beasley. She received her B.A. from Columbia College and went on to teach elementary students in Lexington County. Mrs. Sinnett enjoyed visiting the mountains and was a member of Union United Methodist Church in Irmo.
Surviving are her husband, Joseph Victor Sinnett of Columbia; a son and daughter–in–law, J. Christopher and Kathy Sinnett of Suffolk, Va.; a daughter, Vicki Sinnett of Arlington, Va.; three granddaughters, Casey, Sarah and Allison Sinnett; a brother John Gerald (Ann) Beasley of Columbia.

SAMUEL WILSON
Funeral services for Samuel Wilson, 57, were held Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at Jerusalem Baptist Church with burial in Florence National cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Wilson died Monday, Aug. 2, in New York after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Johnnie and Mamie Bishop Wilson Sr. He received his education in the Darlington County public school system and was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church.
Surviving are one son, Antwan Wilson of North Carolina; one brother, Johnnie Wilson Jr. of Baltimore, Md.; three sisters, Rachael Dixon of Florence, Mamie (Howard) Vernon and Edith Carolyn (Thomas) Snell, both of Hartsville; a companion, Ella Jackson of Queens, N.Y.; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
JOHN DICK HINTON III
FLORENCE — Memorial services for John Richard Dick Hinton III, 72, were held at 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, in the Stoudenmire–Dowling Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating were his nephews, Mr. Richard W. Shelton Sr., Mr. John Haselden and close friend Mr. Thomas Flowers.
Survivors include a son, Larry Richard Coates of Kershaw; a grandson; three sisters, Jettie L. (Oscar) Haselden of West Columbia, Patricia Stephens of Hartsville and Janice Shelton Palmer of Florence; six nephews and two nieces.
Contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
JAMES SLATER
Funeral services for James Slater, 56, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at Second Baptist Church with the Rev. J. D. Blue officiating. Burial will be in Sandy Bluff United Methodist Church cemetery, Bishopville, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Slater died Tuesday, Aug. 3, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Lillie Ann Lucas Slater and the late Sylvester Slater. He received his education in the Darlington County public school system. He attended Second Baptist Church and was employed for 37 years.
Surviving other than his mother of Hartsville are his wife, Louise Covington Slater of Lydia; two sisters, Elizabeth Slater Dingle of Hartsville and Ruby Slater Brown of Lydia; one aunt, Theola Holloman of Florence; an uncle; Amiglee Slater of Hartsville; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives.
SAMUEL WILSON
Funeral services for Samuel Wilson will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at Jerusalem Baptist Church with the Rev. Isaac Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Florence National cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
ISAAC WOODS
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Isaac Woods will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Bobby Miller, pastor, and Bishop C. L. Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. Woods died Sunday morning, Aug. 1, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Lamar, a son of the late Mack and Fannie Bell Enoch Woods.
He attended Spaulding High School and was a member of the class of 1959. He spent several years in New York City. After returning to Darlington, he was employed with H & S Floors and Furnishing and later became a self–employed carpet installer.
Survivors include his wife, Nellie Dargan Woods of the home; a daughter, Doris Ann Sowell of Newark, N.J.; a son, Isaac Ray of Darlington; two step–children, James A. Dargan and Valerie Pinckney, both of Darlington; a sister, Lula (Robert) Aaron of Elliott; a brother, Burnette (Clairise) Woods of Madison, Ga.; six grandchildren; three great–grandchildren; an aunt, Ms. Cascade Feming of Timmonsville; an uncle, Ralph Enoch of Jacksonville, Fla.; six brothers–in–laws; nine sisters–in–law; a host of nieces and nephews.
The family is receiving friends at the residence at 740 W. McIver Road, Darlington.
DOROTHY BRYANT
DARLINGTON — Dorothy Digby Bryant, 86, died Friday, Nov. 19, 2004. Graveside funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, in Black Creek cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Bryant was born in Fountain Inn, daughter of the late Thomas Jasper Digby Jr. and Leila Blanche Mauney Digby. She was married
to the late Grover Cleveland Bryant Jr. Mrs. Bryant had retired as secretary of Galey and Lord in Society Hill and was a member of the Philathea Sunday School Class, the Sanctuary Choir and First Baptist Church.
Surviving are three sons and daughters–in–law, Grover Cleveland Buddy and Jane Bryant, Thomas Digby Tommy and June Bryant and John Creighton Johnny and Lurline Bryant, all of Darlington; a daughter and son–in–law, Mary Wicker Bryant Wade and Richard Wade of Ormond Beach, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Mandy Bryant, Bobby Bryant, Kellie Flowers, Tom Bryant, Megan Bryant, Creighton Bryant, Glenn Bryant, Fuller Bryant; great–grandchildren, Bryant Flowers and Carrie Price Flowers; a sister, Mary Kresovich of Norfolk, Va; a brother and sister–in–law, Ronald and Betty Digby of Greer; a brother–in–law, Marion DuRant of Darlington and a host of nieces and nephews.
