LAMAR — Wayne Gilley, 60, died Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, in Beaumont, Texas.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home, Lamar, with interment following in Lamar cemetery.
Mr. Gilley was born in Louisiana, son of the late Alvin and Opal Gilley. He was a retired firefighter with the Beaumont Fire Department 34 years of service.
Surviving are his wife, Diane Howell Gilley of Maggie Valley, N.C., formerly of Lamar; two sons, Michael and Chuck Gilley of Texas; step–daughters, Michelle Westfall of Charlotte and Melanie Carpenter of Hartsville; five grandchildren; also, one brother, Allen Gilley of Texas.
JAMES E. ANDERSON
Funeral services for James Emitt Anderson, 84, who died Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Nov. 24, at South Hartsville Baptist Church. The Rev. Dave Worthington will officiate. Burial will follow in Magnolia cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mr. Anderson was born in Kershaw County, a son of the late John Henry and Minnie Snead Anderson. He was a member of South Hartsville Baptist Church, the DAV and a veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his daughter, Virginia Gunnells of Bishopville; step–son, James S. Irick of Hannahan; five grandchildren; 11 great–grandchildren.
NORMA K. COWDRY
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Family graveside services for Norma W. King Cowdry, 84, who died Nov. 13, 2004, will be held Friday, Nov. 26, at 1:30 p.m. in Magnolia cemetery in Hartsville, directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Cowdry was born June 14, 1920, in Bruces Crossing, Mich.
Surviving are her son Thomas L. King Jr. and daughter–in–law Mimi King of Scottsdale, Ariz.; granddaughter, Catherine Frantz of Hendersonville, N.C.; grandson, Thomas L. King III of Long Beach, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her husbands Thomas Lorin King Sr., a graduate of Wofford College and a former mayor of Kingstree, and E. William Cowdry.
ADDIE POPE
Funeral services for Addie Melton Pope, 80, were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, at St. Luke United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ben Gafford officiating. Burial followed in Wesley Chapel UMC cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the St. Luke United Methodist Church, 302 Dunlap Dr., Hartsville, SC 29550; Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves, Florence SC 29506; or Omar Shrine.
Mrs. Pope died Friday, Nov. 19. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Lawrence and Ada Register Melton. She was a longtime member of St. Luke United Methodist Church, Dannie Newsome Circle and the Adult Fellowship Sunday School class. She was past–president of the United Methodist Women and was retired from the Byerly Clinic.
Surviving are her husband, Lawrence D. Larry Pope of Hartsville; sons and daughters–in–law, Dean and Chris Pope of Hartsville, Mike and Monnie Pope of Manning; grandchildren, Hoyt Kelley, Candy Tidwell, Sherry Cottingham; great–grandson, Ethan Tidwell.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, LaRaye Pope.
GRADY GAINEY
Funeral services for Grady L. Gainey, 41, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at the Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Marvin Griggs and Billy Melton officiating with burial in Magnolia cemetery.
Mr. Gainey died Friday, Nov. 19. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of the late John Dawson and Etta Ree Freeman Gainey.
Surviving are his wife, Cynthia Weatherford Gainey of Hartsville; sons, Everett Dawson Weatherford and Timothy Wayne Weatherford, both of Hartsville, Grady Dustin Gainey of Oates; daughter, Samantha Gainey of Hartsville; sisters, Gloria Brunson and Sandra Kelley, both of Hartsville, Wanda Stallons of Florence; brothers, Larry Gainey and Donnie Gainey, both of Hartsville, Jimmy Gainey of Abbeville; grandchildren, Christopher Sims, Tyler Gainey, Chole Weatherford, Brooklyn Sylvester.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Bobby Gainey, Ronnie Gainey and John Gainey.

SOCIETY HILL — Funeral services for Minister J. L. Drayton were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, in Christ Temple Holiness Church. Elder Wesley Belin, pastor, and Elder Patrick Usher officiated. Burial followed in St. John Temple Holiness Church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Minister Drayton died Wednesday, Nov. 17, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Bennettsville, a son of the late Vander and Matilda Drayton White. He received his formal education in the Marlboro County public school system and was employed at Becker Sand and Gravel of Bennettsville until he retired.
At an early age he joined Victory Temple Holiness Church and in later years he joined St. John Temple Holiness Church in Society Hill.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lucille F. Drayton of the home; five children, Michael (Adriane) Drayton of Maryland, Carolyn (Charles) Jones, Pamela (Donnie) Shands, Angela Drayton, all of Virginia and Carolyn Hepburn of Fayetteville, N.C.; five step–children, Barbara (Sidney) Swinney, Johnny (Roberta) Ludd, both of Society Hill, Zack (Doris) Fowler of Kuwait, Frederick (Elizabeth) Ludd of Orange, N.J., and Tara (Hampton) McNeil of Spartanburg; 21 grandchildren; four great–grandchildren; four sisters, Lula McRae, Allie (Edward) Walker, Elizabeth Johnson and Ann (Jimmy) Prince, all of Bennettsville; five brothers, James (Brenda) White, Leroy (Hattie Mae) White, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., Albert Lee Drayton of Raleigh, N.C., Johnny (Juanita) and the Rev. Willie (Patricia) White of Bennettsville; six brothers–in–law; six sisters–in–law; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Bennie Rush Sr., 58, were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, in St. James United Methodist Church with the Rev. Anna G. Miller, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Cooper cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. Rush died Thursday, Nov. 18, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Benjamin and Jessie Williams Rush. He received his formal education in the Darlington County public schools and attended Mt. Zion Baptist Church. He was employed with Pee Dee Taxi of Darlington as a cab driver.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Rush of the home; three children, Michelle Wallace (Ellison) , Bennie Rush Jr. and Geraldine Washington, all of Darlington; five grandchildren, Dominique Wallace, Martiz Hunter, Yvonne Alexander, Emma Jean Williams and Janice Dubose; two brothers–in–law, nieces and nephews.
HATTIE P. MILLER
DARLINGTON — Memorial services for Hattie Parrott Miller were held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, in Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Anna G. Miller officiating. Burial followed in Darlington Memorial cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mrs. Miller died on Sunday, Nov. 14, in Landover, Md. She was born in Darlington, a daughter of the late Edward and Florence Parrott. She was widow of the Rev. Dr. I. J. Miller.
Survivors include her children, Dorothy Miller, Melvin, Isaac Miller III and Patricia Miller Robinson; six grandchildren; six great–grandchildren; four brothers, Edward (Bertha) Parrott, Earl (Hilda) Johnson, both of Darlington; Wesley and Allen Parrott of New York.

Graveside services for Lois Catoe Foote, 92, were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, in Middendorf Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Ed Griggs officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease Association, Box 7044, Columbia SC 29202 or Middendorf Baptist Church.
Mrs. Foote, widow of Charles Foote, died Saturday, Nov. 20. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Julius Caesar and Lenora Dixon Catoe. She was a member of Middendorf Baptist Church.
Surviving are her sisters, Terah Smith Davis of Florence and Wilma C. Driggers of Hartsville.
SARAH DEMERY
LAMAR — Sarah James Mancil Knight Demery, 66, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, in Memphis, Tenn. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Nov. 24, at Mt. Pleasant cemetery in Lamar, directed by Belk Funeral Home, Lamar.
Ms. Demery was born in Lamar, daughter of the late Ray and Suzanna Watford Mancil. She was married
to the late Joseph Timothy Demery. Ms. Demery was a nurse for many years.
Surviving are a son, Robert Allan Knight of Brighton, Tenn.; four daughters, Betty Knight Allen of Florence, Barbara Knight Norris of Millington, Tenn., Emma Knight Feagin of Memphis, Tenn., and Beverly Knight Vinson of Florence; seven grandchildren and six great–grandchildren; two brothers Gary Bell of Lamar and Henry Bell of Dovesville; three sisters, Virginia Morris, Thelma Hooten and Mary Young, all of Florence.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, R.J. Bell and Murray Bell, and five sisters, Cleo Ray and Cora Lee Bell, Mary Francis Wilson, Clara Mae Haney and Edna B. Hodge.
Memorials may be made to Autism and Breast Cancer Research.
LARRY WAYNE BEASLEY
Graveside services for Larry Wayne Beasley, 57, who died on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004, will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. in Westview Memorial cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be this evening, Nov. 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Beasley was born in Darlington County, a son of the late John B. and Ruedell Register Beasley. He was employed with Sonoco Products Co. for 36 years and was a member of the Old Timers Club.
Surviving are two sons, Michael and Derrick Beasley of Hartsville; three sisters, Richardine Davis of Sumter, Shirley Brown of McBee and Brenda Rabon of Aynor; and six brothers, John W., Billy, Freddie, Danny Ray Beasley, all of Hartsville, Gerald Beasley of Charleston and Marvin Beasley of Spartanburg.
ARTHUR MATUSE
Funeral services for Arthur L. Matuse, 84, were held at 2 p.m. Nov. 5, 2004, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Becky Jones officiated with burial in Magnolia cemetery.
Mr. Matuse died Tuesday, Nov. 2. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Nathan and Ella Grant Matuse. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, was retired from Sonoco and was a member of the Sonoco Old Timers Club. Mr. Matuse served in the U.S. Army during World War II and took part in the Normandy landing and the Battle of the Bulge. He was a very loving, devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Surviving are his wife, Lafern Petty Matuse of Hartsville; son and daughter–in–law, James and Sheila Amerson of Yankton, S.D.; daughters and son–in–law, Pat and Buckwheat King and Lavel Amerson, all of Hartsville; grandchildren, Stacy Seymour, Joey Horton, Machelle Riley, Scotty Horton, Chris Bartley, Butch Waldron, Shannon Waldron, Vance Amerson, Jamie Amerson, Kelly Amerson; seven great–grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Diane Horton.
ROLAND JOHNSON
Funeral services for Roland Johnson, 72, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, at Mt. Olive AME Church in Woodrow, S.C. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Johnson died Monday, Nov. 15, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Florence County, a son of the late Henry and Lou Haynesworth Johnson. He received his education in the Florence County public school system.
Surviving are his wife, Almena Bradford–Johnson of Hartsville; a daughter, Tiller (Robert) Genovese of Baldwin, N.Y.; mother–in–law, Ida P. Bradford of Hartsville; three brothers, Jimmy Johnson of Baltimore, Md., Fred Johnson and Walter Johnson, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a sister, Betty Diggs of Rembert; seven sisters–in–law; two aunts, Alice Johnson and Nettie Johnson, both of Woodrow; a goddaughter, Louise Addison of Hartsville; four grandchildren; five great–grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
