Minister James N. Prescott, 64, died on Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m on Saturday, Nov. 13, at the Butler High School Gym. Burial will follow in the Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Hartsville. The family will receive friends at the residence at 1108 Robinson St., Hartsville.
He was born May 1, 1940, in Lee County, a son of the late Frierson and Nora Benjamin Prescott. He was married
to the former Margaret Nelson and this union was blessed with five children. He was employed for 22 at Sonoco Products Company in the Millwright shop. He was first a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church and later became a member of the Remnant Holiness Church.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Prescott of Hartsville, three sons, Calvin (Velvet) Prescott, Eric (Gwendolyn) Prescott and James (Felita) Prescott, all the Hartsville; two daughters, Tywanda (Andre) Ligon, and Margetta (Savoy) Mack, both of Hartsville; two brothers, Jerry (Mary) Prescott and Willie Prescott, both of Hartsville; two sisters, Rosa Murphy and Mary Rogers, both of Hartsville; 13 grandchildren; one great–grandchild and many other relatives and very dear friends.
CREOLA THOMAS
Creola Thomas, 71, died Sunday at her residence after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.
REV. R.N. WELLS SR.
FLORENCE — A funeral service for the Rev. R. N. Cap Wells Sr., 89, widower of Geraldine Fletcher Wells, was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, at Pine Grove United Methodist Church near McColl, with the Revs. Barry Allen and Leon Wagnon officiating. Interment followed in Fletcher cemetery, directed by Cain Funeral Home.
Rev. Wells, widower of Geraldine Fletcher Wells, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, at Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee. He was born July 8, 1915, in Manning to the late Joseph LeGrand and Roberta Newton Wells. He was a graduate of Wofford College and Duke University Divinity School. The Rev. Wells served as a minister with the South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. During his career, he served churches in Little River, Blenheim, Aynor, Greeleyville, Lane, Salters, Chesterfield–St. Paul, Timmonsville–Pine Grove and Lydia–Wesley Chapel. Following his retirement, he remained active in Pine Grove United Methodist Church.
Among his survivors are a son, Robert N. (Mary Layton) Wells Jr. of Florence; a brother, Luke Wells of Manning and grandchildren, Robert, Benjamin and Stephen Wells of Florence.
MERZELLE T. KIRVEN
DARLINGTON — A graveside service for Merzelle Thomas Kirven, 82, was held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, in Grove Hill cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Tim Coker and directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.
Mrs. Kirven was born in Darlington County, was the daughter of the late General Shafter and Lila Mae Register Thomas. She was married
to the late Robert Horace Kirven Sr. She was educated in the Darlington County schools and was a homemaker. Mrs. Kirven was a member of Central Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Robert H. Sonny (Olivia) Kirven Jr. of Darlington and Jerry (Susan) Kirven of Stafford, Va.; two daughters, Barbara K. (Dallas) Bailey of Florence and Judy Kirven of Darlington; five brothers, W. S. (Carolyn) Thomas and G.S. (Mae Bell) Thomas Jr., both of Darlington, Charles (Maude) Thomas of Moncks Corner, Dillon (Judy) Thomas of Cataula, Ga., and Larry (Sue) Thomas of Austin, Texas; two sisters, Betty T. (Charlie) Stephens of Darlington and Petty T. (Cammie) Collins of Effingham; 11 grandchildren, Robbie (Lynn) Kirven, Lisa (Henry) Taylor, Mark (Crystal) Bailey, Victor (Rebecca) Bailey, Timothy (Marcie) Bailey, Jennifer Gainey (Mike) Cooke, Alex (Danielle) Gainey, Crystal Kirven (Michael) Creel, Matthew Kirven, Blake Kirven and Michael Kirven; 16 great–grandchildren, Brice Kirven, Jared Kirven, Palmer Kirven, Hayley Taylor, Kathryn Taylor, Owen Taylor, Kaitlyn Bailey, Kendall Bailey, Zackary Bailey, Kara Bailey, Haden Bailey, Tyler Cooke, Landon Cooke, Alexis Gainey, Carson Gainey and Jocelyn Creel.
Mrs. Kirven was also predeceased by a brother, John Thomas; a sister, Mary Ellen T. Stephens, and two sons, Danny Kirven and Mack Kirven.

ROGER TRUETT
DARLINGTON — Roger A. Truett, 50, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at his home.
Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Darlington Memory Gardens.
Mr. Truett was born in Darlington County, son of the late Charles Edward Truett and Elizabeth Geraldine Anderson Truett Kirven. He was a graduate of St. John's High School and was assistant manager of Piggly Wiggly. He was a member of Darlington Moose Lodge.
Surviving are three brothers, Charles (Irene) Truett of Darlington, Joey (Tina) Kirven of Hartsville and Timmy (Tonya) Kirven of Darlington; also, a number of nieces and nephews.
BOBBY BRYANT
DARLINGTON — Robert Bobby Lewis Bryant Sr., 74, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, in a Florence hospital of complications from a stroke. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, in Grove Hill cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Bryant was born in Darlington County, son of the late Grace Mills Bryant and William Ervin Bryant Sr. He owned and operated service stations in Darlington from the 1950s until he retired in 1980. He served on Darlington County Council from 1980 to 1988. He was a member of St. David's Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years and was a member of Swift Creek Baptist Church.
Bobby Bryant was an aviation enthusiast, once owning his own plane, and often enjoyed visiting Rudy Branham's airport. He also was frequently seen at Taki's Restaurant, where he enjoyed the fellowship of his friends there. Another of his joys was greeting customers at Darlington Feed and Seed Co., owned by his nephew, Dicky Bryant.
Mr. Bryant is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carolyn Boots Bryant; son, Robert L. Bryant Jr. of Columbia; daughter, Carla Sue Bryant of Darlington and sister, Betty Hicks of Florence.
He was predeceased by brothers, Edward M. Bryant and William Ervin Bryant Jr.

MARGARET C. McARTHUR
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A memorial service for Margaret Cannon McArthur will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, in First Presbyterian Church by Dr. John Wright Coker Jr. Entombment will be in the Church Columbarium. The family will receive friends tonight, Friday, from 5 to 7 at Jernigan–Warren Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, PO Box 569, Fayetteville, NC 28302.
Mrs. McArthur died Tuesday, Nov. 9, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. She was born in Hartsville, the daughter of the late James Ervin Cannon Sr. and Rosa M. Cannon. She attended Winthrop College and graduated from the University of South Carolina.
She was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church and served as deacon and was awarded the Women of the Church Service Award and Lifetime Membership Award. Mrs. McArthur was also a member of the LaFayette Garden Club, the Sewing Club and Tuesday Night Fun Bunch Club.
Surviving are her three children, Ashley McArthur (David K.) Rehr of Arlington, Va., Paul H. (Holley D.) McArthur Jr. of Charlotte, N.C. and Allison McArthur (Daniel J.) LaMontagne of Holley Springs; a brother, James W. Cannon of Hartsville; and nine grandchildren, Charlotte, Sarah and Mary Daniel McArthur, Andrew, Emily, Harrison and Henry Rehr and Grayson and Clair LaMontagne.

CREOLA THOMAS
Funeral services for Creola Thomas, 71, will be held at 2:30 p.m. today, Nov. 12, 2004, at The Church In The Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith Inc. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Ms. Thomas died Sunday, Nov. 7, at her residence after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Andy and Carrie Highland Thomas Sr. She received her education at Butler High School. Ms. Thomas was a member of The Church in the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith Inc. She served as the church secretary under Bishop L. Hunter and was also a member of the Prayer Band.
Surviving are her son, Nathaniel Thomas of Hartsville; six grandchildren; a step–mother, Maggie Thomas of Hartsville; two brothers, Andrew (Mollie) Thomas of Tacoma, Wash. and James Thomas of Ben–Salem, Pa.; nine sisters, Bertha Lee Douglas, Charlie Mae Highland, Dorothy Thomas and Betty Thomas, all of Hartsville, Rosa Lee Taylor and Agnes Sony, both of Philadelphia, Pa., Claretta Kennedy Thomas of Ben–Salem, Pa., Catherine (Willie) Douglas of Florence and Geraldine (Gary) Wright of Charlotte, N.C.; five sisters–in–laws; four aunts, Cara Mae Aldrich of Salisbury, N.C., Willie Mae Cooper of Hartsville, Lillie Mae James of Darlington and Mary Ann Griffin of Riveria Beach, Fla.; one uncle, E.C. Thomas of Lee County, and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
RICHARD L. ROBINSON
LAMAR — Funeral services for Richard Lee Robinson, 47, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, in Sandy Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles K. Wilson, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home Inc.
Mr. Robinson died Friday morning, Nov. 5, in a Florence hospital after a short illness. He was born in Lamar, a son of the late Levester and Gussie Mae Dargan Robinson. Mr. Robinson was a life member of Sandy Grove United Methodist Church where he was a trustee. He was a graduate of Spaulding High School Class of 1975 and continued his education at St. Augustine College, Raleigh, N.C., of which he graduated in 1979. He was employed by the Darlington County School District since 1980 until his illness. He also worked with the Darlington County Recreation Department.
Survivors include two daughters, Anjennette (Quan) Moses of Florence and Rosa (Courtney) DuBois of Darlington; a son, Richard Levester Robinson of St. Augustine College, Raleigh, N.C.; two sisters, Bessie Lee Harkless of Timmonsville and Janie (Simon) Harrell of Bronx, N.Y.; a brother, the Rev. Dr. James (Mary) Dargan of Mont Clair, N.J.; five grandchildren; a goddaughter; nieces, nephews and cousins.
A sister, Laura Key, preceded him in death.
FAYE HARRELL KING
Funeral services for Faye Harrell King, 60, who died Nov. 10, 2004, will be held today, Nov. 12, at 3 p.m. at Gum Branch Baptist Church. The Rev. Jeff Gardner will officiate. Burial will be in the Gum Branch Baptist Church cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Faye was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Bill and Mary King Harrell. She was a member of Gum Branch Baptist Church and the Hartsville Moose Lodge.
Surviving are her husband, Richard King of Hartsville; sons, Eric King and Danny King, both of Hartsville; sisters, Margaret Crisp and Ann Gilbert of Hartsville; Betty Oldfield of West Palm Beach, Fla.; Carolyn Hampton of Melbourne, Fla.; Willie Tatum of Myrtle Beach; Grandson, Fowler King of Hartsville.
She was preceded in death by a sister Helen Bass.
LaFERN MATUSE
Funeral services for LaFern Petty Matuse, 71, were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Becky Jones officiated.
Mrs. Matuse, widow of Arthur Matuse, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late George Edward and Mary Gandy Petty. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was a loving, fun mother and grandmother. She was employed with Nitronics for 15 years and retired as owner of Petty's Store.
Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, James and Sheila Amerson of Yankton, S.D.; daughters and son–in–law, Pat and Buckwheat King of Hartsville, Lavel Amerson of Hartsville; step–daughter, Jennifer Dixon Griggs of Hartsville; sisters, Mary Lyles, Shirley Strickland, Avice Freeman, Daisy Brown, Miriam Edwards, all of Hartsville; grandchildren, Stacy Seymour, Machelle Riley, Shannon Waldron, Butch Waldron, Chris Bartley, all of Hartsville, Vance Amerson, Jamie Amerson, Kelly Amerson all of Yankton, S.D., Eljai Amerson and Tiffany Amerson of Hartsville; step–grandchildren, Michael and Chad Dixon of Hartsville; seven great–grandchildren.
GARY LEWIS
DARLINGTON — Gary Watson Lewis, 65, died Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at Carolinas Hospital System. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment at 2 p.m. at Lake City Memorial Park, Lake City.
Mr. Lewis was born in Olanta, son of the late Percy St. Clair Lewis and Gladys Cullins Lewis. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees at Furman University. He taught at Southside High School and Bennettsville Vocational School. He then became an administrator of the vocational school in Bennettsville and for the past 17 years was assistant director of the vocational school in Chester. His real love was guiding students in developing good character and skills for a meaningful vocation. He was a Mason, member of the Darlington Lion's Club and member of the First Baptist Church of Darlington. His kind and gentle spirit will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Surviving are his sister, Dorothy Lewis Owen of Darlington; sister–in–law, Betty Hamer Lewis of Florence; a niece, Ann Marie Lewis, also of Florence; and four nephews, Michael Lewis Payne of Palm Beach, Fla., Trey Lewis of Florence, Michael Chase Payne of Florida State University and Lance Lewis Payne of Sebring, Fla.
Mr. Lewis was preceded in death by two brothers, Sam Henry Lewis and Percy St. Clair Lewis Jr.
